Who are the best FPL captain options for Gameweek 32+?

Fantasy Premier League managers face arguably the hardest captaincy decision of 2019/20 as they prepare for Gameweek 32+.

Manchester City and Liverpool’s Etihad Stadium clash removes their usually reliable premium players from the conversation while Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s (£11.0m) heads into a meeting with Norwich devoid of irresistible form.

However, wide-open weeks like this one are exciting for Fantasy managers looking for a bold differential option that can fire them up the rankings. The lack of a clear and obvious standout candidate means avoiding the wisdom of the crowd comes with fewer risks than usual.

In order to help you pick the best asset for your team, we have analysed the form of each option before comparing them against the defences they are about to face.

Captain Poll

Who are the best FPL captain options for Gameweek 32+?

Raúl Jiménez (£8.3m) is the favourite for the Gameweek 32+ according to the Fantasy Football Scout readership. The Mexican has accrued 27.5% of the vote ahead of his meeting with Aston Villa on Saturday afternoon.

The Wolves man has been the model of consistency recently, scoring in four of his last five matches, securing bonus points in three of those. Meanwhile, despite recent defensive improvements, Villa have kept just one clean sheet in their last 12 Premier League matches.

This is the Gameweek that Aubameyang holders have been waiting for, when he faces the Norwich defence that has conceded 56 goals this season, the second-highest. Like Villa, the Canaries have tightened up a little bit recently, with three clean sheets since Gameweek 23, but have conceded at least twice on three occasions since then.

Aubameyang may not be exhibiting world-beating form, with no goals in his last four games, but 17.3% of our voters believe he can be trusted after two rather unfortunate blanks. Against Brighton he had a handful of chances, and, were it not for Jack Stephens’ (£4.4m) red-card inducing foul, might have netted against Southampton too.

A trio of Manchester United players complete the poll’s top five, Marcus Rashford (£9.0m) edging out his colleagues. The FPL forward has convinced 9.1% of the readers to lend him their vote for Gameweek 32+. That is not surprising, as he has recorded 13 attacking returns in as many Premier League appearances since Gameweek 12.

Bruno Fernandes’ (£8.7m) Gameweek 31+ blank means nothing to the 8.9% who have backed him to follow that up with an attacking return against Brighton. After all, he was a little unfortunate not to get an assist for Harry Maguire’s (£5.3m) headed goal at Old Trafford, ruled out for a slight nudge on Phil Jagielka (£4.1m). It is also true that Fernandes has been involved in six of the 12 goals scored since his Gameweek 25 debut, more than any colleague.

The hat-trick for Anthony Martial (£8.1m) has not done as much for him in the Gameweek 32+ captaincy poll as was expected. That 21-point haul recorded against Sheffield United has convinced 8.7% to lend him their backing for the trip to Brighton.

The goal-shy nature of Aston Villa’s play since the Premier League returned has convinced 5.7% of our voters to put forward Matt Doherty (£6.4m) as the best captain option. As a defender he would benefit richly from another Wolves clean sheet, while the right-back has four attacking returns in the last five Gameweeks. However, with the turnaround for Wolves proving tighter than most other teams, could Nuno Espirito Santo rest Doherty to give Adama Traoré (£5.8m) the right wing-back berth, as he has been known to do in the past.

Mohamed Salah’s (£12.7m) tricky Gameweek 32+ fixture, which takes him to the Etihad Stadium, is enough to put off most voters this time around. Only 3.8% are backing the Egyptian against Manchester City, perhaps unsurprising considering Jurgen Klopp said in his Friday press conference that the remaining matches would feature “a lot” of changes to his team.

Son Heung-min (£9.7m), Kevin De Bruyne (£10.7m), Harry Kane (£10.9m), Christian Pulisic (£6.9m), Traoré, Eddie Nketiah (£4.4m) and Sadio Mané (£12.5m) are the only other options backed by more than 1%.

Anyone else reckon that there could be heavy rotation in the Pool team now that the league is secured?

I am not convinced. Salah, Mane, VVD, TAA still starts most of the PL games imo

no, why would there? they need 5 wins out of last 7 games to finish on 101 points the record points ever in the PL

they will go for this, maybe a tweak here and there each game but expect the likes of mane & salah to still play many more minutes until the end of the season.

couple of the players have mentioned the points record as well during interviews so it must be part of the gameplan for the rest of the season

defo, why rest them? for what? get the points record then put their feet up for next season, the likes of city still have to play fa cup and CL games before next season starts

There will be some rotation I reckon, but not heavy. They will be going all out to beat City though.

I'm that sad that Bruno burnt me the other day so I can't go again.

I would say Jimenez, but it's such a long gameweek and do I want to play it that early? It's the equivalent of a 12.30 Saturday captain.

Might just go Rashford and pray.

Yea had jimi then seen he plays early and other games will go on until Thursday, way too early to stew over the remaining fixtures if jimi blanked

Just posted this but the don’t captain an early kick off Player is illogical right? I get it in a week where you are not gambling much but given the FA cup isn’t it better to go with logic that you know jimi is playing and therefore pick him.

I’m going for salah but just generally intrerested

probably tempting fate here but Jiminez very rarely gets double figures, a nice steady 6 or 8 most weeks, if you want to go for someone with a higher ceiling then Martial, Rashford & Auba for this week

No idea what to do tbh. Wolves don’t have the cup but hate the early morning.
The wolves game being before the rest all play in the cup is a head wrecker as likes of rash/Fernandes etc could get reduced minutes and there aren’t too many tempting fixtures out there before you factor in the fa cup games and short rest period

But isn’t the early game captaincy just in your mind (and lots of other ppl). It can’t actually be worse to pick someone you know is playing versus a fable that you don’t want to use a captain early?

Related to two things for me

        1. High rate of Captain failures for me in early ko
        2. Often find the games to be a bit flatter due to how early the ko is and not seeing as much action = low fpl scoring

As you said also the fact if it’s a blank you then have to watch all the other results from behind the sofa, at least if you captain late on in the week you can hold onto hope (it’s the hope that kills you in this game)

Wolves have the best clean sheet odds of those 3 teams by a significant margin, so definitely play their two. Would probably start VVD over Holgate in hopes of an attacking return -- neither is a great bet for a CS.

For a hit I could get this BB team in 33.

    Pope (SHU) Ryan (nor)
Alonso (WAT) Doherty (ARS) Boly (ARS) TAA (AVL) Sot (LEI)
KDB (sou) Salah (AVL) Barnes (LEI) Cantwell (BRI) Martial (Bou)
Jimenez (ARS) DCL (tot) Rashford (Bou)

    32 - Mane + Ings > Rashford + Martial
    33 - Button + Rico > Alonso + Ryan

    worth it?

I don't understand why people always are put off by getting someone in that is injury prone... if they are showing form then get them in whilst you can bank the points and if they get injured after a couple of games (doubtful) then move them on

Currently on a Utd triple up of Ddg, Bruno and Pogba having gone for the latter 2 over Rashford and now regret it!

Can’t get Rashford with 2 transfers and wouldn’t be keen on a hit for it anyway but would you move one for Martial with my FT?

    The Review - GW 31+

Hi everyone, welcome to the latest edition of The Review. I hope that this summary of takeaways from GW31+ will be helpful for FPL managers heading into GW32+:

(Data taken from FFScout with permission)

    1) It is only fitting that I start this week’s piece with Anthony Martial. The Frenchman tops the charts for big chances of all players in the league since the league has restarted. His chemistry with Marcus Rashford against Sheffield United was electric, with the pair of them creating three big chances between them - two of which resulted in goals. Rashford himself was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet, having accumulated a big chance a piece in the past two games yet not scoring even once. Since the league has restarted, Man United are second only to Man City for big chances and xG. During this period, Rashford and Martial have been the key protagonists having registered six of United's seven big chances. As in the reverse fixture, they look set to be among the points at Brighton again. However, it is worth noting that Everton, Man United and Brighton are the only teams to have played twice or more yet not to have conceded a single big chance. Particularly impressive from Brighton, given that they have played Arsenal and Leicester. Will be interesting to see how they cope with an inform United attack. My own personal standpoint is that United should win this by around two to three goals.

    2) Is it worth owning Paul Pogba? I don’t think so. I think the loss of penalties has been a huge factor, and with Bruno in the team I highly doubt Pogba would have a massive say in FPL terms. So far this season, Pogba has averaged a shot in the box every ≈90 minutes (vs ≈53 last season under Solksjaer) and a big chance every ≈210 minutes (vs ≈160 last season under Solksjaer). I would recommend selling for the likes of Martial or Pulisic.

    3) “Why did Bruno Fernandes blank?” has been the most commonly asked question to me this week. I think before I answer this, it is extremely important to remind ourselves why we owned him in the first place. I wrote this about him last GW: “The fact that he's on penalties is massive. No team has been awarded more penalties than Man United over the past two seasons - to put this into context Man United have been awarded 23 with the next highest being Leicester with 14. From the evidence so far, he also seems very bonus friendly, having accumulated bonus in 50% of the league games he has played till date.” So far, Bruno is worryingly yet to register a big chance from open play in seven games. His creativity numbers haven’t been great either, having created just two big chances for his team mates over a seven game spell. I think he is one of those players who will keep the points ticking over though, given his bonus potential and the fact that United will continue to win penalties with Martial and Rashford running at teams. Keep him for now, but I wouldn’t suggest captaining.

    4) Should I keep Sheffield United defenders? I would suggest to bin them off because the fixtures are tougher and the decline in defensive numbers since the Premier League has restarted has been noticeable. Since the league has restarted, the Blades have conceded an average of 10 shots in the box per game (vs ≈6.82 pre restart) and 3 big chances per game (vs ≈1.89 pre restart).

    5) *Looks at previous article’s post on Raúl Jiménez, copies and pastes into new article* This seems to be how my mind operates every time I think to write something about Raúl Jiménez such is his phenomenal consistency. At the cost of repeating myself, Jiménez has the best expected goal involvement, shots inside the box, chances created and big chances created of all forwards this season. He continued his rich vein of form against Bournemouth and will now fancy himself against Villa having scored against them in the reverse fixture. What is so impressive about Jiménez is his remarkable tendency to pick up bonus - in the 14 games he has scored in this season, only twice has the Wolves forward failed to register any bonus points. I don’t think Villa will be a walkover for Wolves though. The Villains have shown doggedness since the Premier League restart. Since the league has restarted, Villa have conceded on average 5 shots in the box per game (vs ≈12.21 pre restart) and ≈0.67 big chances per game (vs ≈3.18 pre restart).

    6) I introspected the impact of Willy Boly on the Wolves side. The findings were as given below:

    Wolves with Boly

Shots in the box conceded per game: ≈6.80
Big chances conceded per game: ≈1.20
    Goals conceded per game: 0.50
Clean sheets: 9 out of 15 games played

    Wolves without Boly

Shots in the box conceded per game: ≈6.87
Big chances conceded per game: ≈1.62
    Goals conceded per game: 1.60
Clean sheets: 1 out of 16 games played

First things first, Wolves have an elite defence. Over the season, no Premier League side has conceded fewer big chances than them. While it appears that Wolves has slightly overperformed defensively when Boly has been in the side, I think it’s important not to overlook the intangible factor that might be the confidence that his presence instills in the team.

    7) Diogo Jota hasn’t been his usual self since the league has restarted. The Portuguese forward was averaging 2.4 shots inside the box and 1.2 big chances per game in the five games prior to Project Restart averaging 6.8 FPL points over that period. However, since the league has restarted he has only averaged 1 shot inside the box per game and has yet to have a big chance come his way. He also seems increasingly susceptible to an early substitution. He’s a sell in my book.

    8) If my memory serves me correct, this is the first time since I’ve been writing this season that Harry Kane has been best of all players in the league in a GW for expected goal involvement, which is particularly worth noting given that his threat was purely from open play. Serge Aurier was particularly impressive too, and recorded the second most penalty area touches of all Spurs players - he looked extremely menacing down that right side playing almost like a wingback. It is worth noting though that Spurs under Mourinho don’t have the greatest of xGc’s - they lie fifth from bottom. Heung Min Son’s positioning was worrying, as he was deployed extremely wide on the left wing. There has been a theory floating around that Son is better for FPL without Kane in the team. I thought I’d put this theory to test. Under Mourinho with Harry Kane in the team, Son has been averaging a shot in the box every ≈62 minutes (vs 25 minutes under Mourinho without Harry Kane in the team) and a big chance every ≈170 minutes (vs 75 minutes under Mourinho without Harry Kane in the team). This theory has been worryingly true for Son owners, with the evidence we have so far.

    9) Why were Dominic Calvert Lewin and Richarlison not involved vs Norwich? The simple answer is well, because Everton failed to create a single big chance all game. Calvert Lewin had four shots in the box, all of them on target yet wasn’t able to the quality service that he really needed to notch. At that price he’s an easy one to keep I’d suggest. I was skeptical about Richarlison which I guess is easy to say now in hindsight, but I personally think he’s less of an integral figure under Carlo Ancelotti than he was under Marco Silva which is why I didn’t pick him in my FPL squad too. It is worth noting that nine midfielders have registered more big chances than Richarlison since Ancelotti has taken over, so his numbers don’t match the great expectations placed upon him by FPL managers. I think there are better options around the same price range like Martial or even cheaper like Pulisic.

    10) Jamie Vardy was averaging a big chance every ≈109 minutes pre GW17. Post GW 17, he has averaged a big chance every ≈138 minutes. Leicester over this period have dropped from 3rd to 10th for big chances in the league. Leicester are struggling for creativity, so I don’t think it is worth holding onto Vardy given his premium price tag. There are better options out there for less. Get rid.

    11) The general consensus seems to be that Arsenal’s defence has witnessed a marked improvement under Mikel Arteta. So far, Arsenal appear to be a work in progress defensively and Arsenal’s underlying defensive numbers under Unai Emery have actually been better than that of Arteta’s. Under Emery, Arsenal conceded ≈1.61 big chances per game as opposed to ≈2.23 per game under Arteta. Having said that, Arsenal have conceded ≈1.08 goals under Arteta per game compared to ≈1.50 under Emery which suggests a certain degree of overperformance under Arteta. Over the past two games however, Arsenal have conceded just one big chance collectively which suggests that Arteta is making his side harder to beat.

    12) With two goals in two games, Christian Pulisic has established himself as the standout midfielder in his price range. The USA international registered two big chances against Man City, which now means that he has recorded more big chances than his teammate Mason Mount despite playing half as many minutes over the season. Only Salah and Sterling have a better expected minutes per goal involvement ratio than Pulisic this season.

      To summarise:

      1) Get Martial, Fernandes, Jimenez, Pulisic, Wolves defence
      2) Consider Kane over Son, Arsenal defence
      3) Get rid of Pogba, Sheffield Utd, Richarlison, Vardy, Jota

Any insights on City, and Sterling in particular? In a normal week I'd sell him for Martial, but who knows what will happen in the FA Cup...

His numbers are always good so it's a tough call. Keep him if you have no other priorities

Thanks - yeah no other priorities, but the fact that he plays Liverpool is an extra incentive to sell him I guess.

Anybody else on a WC struggling to decide on midfielders? Just feel there are so many potentially great options.

KdB, Salah, Mane, Son, Mahrez, Sarr, Pulisic, Martial, Pogba, Bruno, Foden, Saka...

Slot A: KdB. Class player, capable of goals, assists, bonus, top scorer this season, good value. Feel he needs to stay in even though probably have minutes managed.

Slot B: Salah (or Mane). Similarly to KdB, might have managed minutes but a class player who can haul at any time.

Slot C: United Mid. Currently on Martial. Form, fixtures, something to play for.

Slot D: Enabler/5th mid. Really like the look of Foden here. City's last 6 fixtures are great and I feel like Pep will give Foden plenty of minutes, and also Foden will be keen to perform to try and break into the first team. Saka also looks decent but Arsenal look quite poor.

Slot E: One of Bruno, Sarr, Pulisic, or Son. This is my main dilemma. Who would you go for?

I have 2ft and currently looking at Grealish and Barnes out for Pulisic and Saint-Max. Considered Foden, but am unsure. Sarr or Douc look reasonable picks but prefer S-M.

Would leave me with KDB, Salah, Bruno, Pulisic, S-M.

I think they would be good choices. I forgot about Saint-Max, he's a decent option. Think Sarr has goals in him but there are probably just better options and better teams to select from than Watford.

Agree with everything you said...for Slot E I think Bruno is the best option but you can get Rashford upfront where there are a lack of options so personally gona take a chance on Pulisic as I think Son is a bit expensive.

My mid will be KDB, Salah, Martial, Pulisic, Foden.

Then Rashford, Jimenez, Nketiah upfront. 3-4-3 this week then switching between a 4-4-2 & 3-5-2 after that.

Thanks for the reply. I currently have Vardy but considering either Jesus or Rashford in for him. Have Jimi and Nketiah locked in so we have very similar teams.

    would love some advice guys

    2FT

    Guaita
    TAA Boly AWB
    Salah KDB Bruno Barnes
    Kane Vardy Jota

    a) Barnes & Vardy -> Traore & Rashford
    b) Barnes & Vardy -> Martial & Nketiah

Why didn't Guiata play the last match? I would consider using one of the FTs on getting a better keeper in any case: Patricio, DDG, Pope all have much better fixtures.

Guiata was injured then? Could be worth doing B plus the -4 hit if you won't have a playing keeper.

He's 75% flagged with a Thigh Injury on FPL so it makes sense, I remember looking at the lineup and they had the 3rd choice goalie on the bench.

    1. Cahill

probably is - only a 2 point hit effectively

    2. XABI 15

I think it is worth it as stated above. Its essentially a 2 point hit if they get the minimum 2, so you need a further 2 points to breakeven.

You can pick a keeper with a very high clean sheet % chance or one who you reckon could rack up the saves.

As mentioned, it's only a -2 in reality and lots of good keeper options at the moment. So I feel it's worth it for this week.

What you don't want though is having 2 relatively expensive keepers for the rest of the season, i.e. say you have Pope and decide to get Patricio for the BB week. It's going to be difficult if you don't have a WC to find a FT to downgrade one of the keepers to free up that money.
