    Early thoughts on this?

    Pope (McCarthy)
    Alexander-Arnold, Maguire, Doherty (Egan) (Taylor)
De Bruyne, Sterling, Mahrez, Fernandes, Sarr
    Rashford, Jiménez (Connolly)

    1 FT, 1.2 in bank. BB37 probably.

Jimmy and Sarr are likely sells, Connolly will probably go in 37.

    Cheers

FPL has such a devastating impact on a person's mental health ... How long before their is an FPL suicide?

The game has been designed to be an addiction with euphoric highs and crushing lows but what about when it gets too much?

This is a serious topic that needs serious discussion.

    What prompted this?

    Az's tweet. https://mobile.twitter.com/ffscout_az/status/1282055278444371969

In a vacuum, I don't think the game can drive you too uncontrollable amounts of mental distress. My worry is what if FPL is the straw that broke the camel's back for some people and it pushed them over the edge with other things going on in their life. This is why I wish people would think before they tweet.

It’s a tricky one this because ultimately, as with a lot of things in life, it is a competition and part of the enjoyment comes from comparison to other people/scores.

That’s not to say people should be put down for low scores because a)that crosses a line and b) low scores will happen to most of us.

But feeling guilty or that you need to keep quiet about a good score I am not sure helps.

If we all scored the same every week, it wouldn’t be a very popular game.

Lots of people (myself included) have had their weekends completely ruined. You can see it on Twitter from people like FPL Editor. I think people need to think before they tweet. On the very rare occasions I do well, I never go public because I know there are people out there hurting.

This has been what I’d call a ‘Polarising gameweek’ where the selection of big hitters in the game have either hauled or failed miserably (so far).
I don’t recall them happening too often but this one can be particularly devastating given it being so late in the season.

The Antonio haul is another spanner in the works but I don’t expect he’s highly owned at all.

There probably already have been FPL suicides, indirectly at least, just something else that pushed someone over the edge.

You would never hear of them because it is largely a faceless game, at the end of the day nobody really cares how anyone else has done, in fact we usually want others to do badly.

FPL is just a way for people to hide from real life, especially those that actually take it seriously, which is probably most of us on here.

When you see people boasting continuously about a big score or whatever you know it just because they not got enough love/ sef esteem elsewhere in their lives.

FFS are the only site brave enough to address the connection between the game and mental health.

Does official FPL need to carry a warning like gambling adverts do (i.e. when the fun stops stop)?

I think this is a poor mentality. If people are celebrating a good score it doesn’t necessarily mean they are compensating for other aspects of their lives. It’s not unusual to celebrate doing well in something you have invested heavily in

Once the deadline passes you have to accept your points have been decided, you just don't know what they are yet. Just start looking at the next gameweek and relax.

FPL Twitter can turn into a really toxic place if you let it.

If you’re finding it tough, advice is to either 1) mute anyone that has a pre-disposition towards gloating/over-celebrating on Twitter or 2) avoid it completely whilst gameweeks are ongoing.

There are a number of 100% humble twitter accounts (avfc82 is one that comes to mind, but there are others) but they are pretty few and far between. People of course have the right to put whatever content they like out there, but it’s your decision which you choose to consume.

FPL General gave good advice on his pod once (although I feel he shouldn't be taking sponsorship money from bet 365 knowing that gambling can really shatter lives - especially when he is a big ambassador of calm, the men's mental health charity). He said that when he has a bad gameweek he switches off his phone and stays off Twitter all weekend.

You are probably addicted if you are having mental health issues related to fpl. You have to think of ways to manage this or remove the addiction completely. People can have addictions to all kinds of things, yes, fantasy sports can be one of them. But, I wouldn't say the game is designed to be addictive with euphoric highs and crushing lows. You need to have your priorities in life, get treatment for depression/anxiety/other mental illnesses if you need it. And play FPL only for enjoyment purposes.

Look at this site. Look at Twitter. Look at all the FPL pods out there. The game has clearly been engineered to be addictive with green arrows acting like little dopamine hits and with your next big score always one gameweek away. I can manage it pretty well I feel, but there will be men out there who never speak up and suffer in silence.

You kind of spelled out the problem in your first short sentences there. For me, I look at this site but I don't follow FPL people on Twitter or any podcasts. I'm the tallest dwarf amongst my ML - ie just a bit less useless than the rest, none of whom take FPL too seriously. It's fair to say that the game has been 'engineered' to be addictive, as has Facebook and plenty of stuff that assaults our senses and time these days. Society isn't going to help you; you have to build the resilience to say no or walk away when you feel something is adversely affecting you.

It’s a game. An infuriating one at times but still just a game. I think FFS have done a brilliant job of raising mental health issues relating to FPL (the dedicated scoutcast was excellent). I do think it’s a bit harsh naming Az as the trigger for your post though mate. He’s a very respectful guy who led the mental health awareness scoutcast brilliantly. He also shares Twitter posts when he bombs too. I’d imagine he’d me mortified if he thought his tweet caused you this much angst.

I have to agree. Az is great. He opens his account up to hear from complete strangers who are in distress. And FFS must be applauded for recording not one but two pods on FPL and mental health. I'm not having a pop at Az. It was more about me asking how many men are suffering in silence with FPL making their difficult lives even more difficult?

Also I think it's worse for high profile FPL pundits. Both Jay and Mark have talked openly about having to take a step back from the public eye in the last few seasons due to the pressure of FPL. So there you go. Proof that it can become much more than "just a game".

"High profile pundits"? They're professionals, aren't they? Mark, at least, monetises his involvement in the game. It's a job he's chosen. A choice he can reverse any time. I wouldn't put that in the same basket as the situation you began the thread with, myself.

Twitter and most forms of social media are cesspits. Should have warnings on them like: Social Media has been shown to inflame mental health issues, use at own risk.

I’ve cut them all to 0 except for Facebook messenger to talk to people I already know and feel so much better.

When I see my workmates after the weekend we have a good laugh about our terrible gameweeks etc. That is healthy and gets it out the system. That is how FPL should be, a battle against your mates

Twitter on the other hand is a toxic cesspool, and turns normal, decent people into moronic idiots (me included) Most people talk first and think later on twitter, including some of those that run this site, and none of it is healthy,it just about pumping up the ego.

I don’t bother with Twitter but this forum is pretty good at tolerating the odd humble brag, and calling out those who get too full of themselves. Like most pastimes FPL is better when you can share the emotional journey with like-minded souls. And with that in mind I would heartily endorse our community tournaments. Boris Bodega has been running a brilliant one for most of this season, and I’ve been able to share highs, lows (mostly lows), exchange ideas, and have a laugh with 14 other Managers around the world, as well as exchanging friendly banter with our opponents. Best therapy I’ve ever had.

For me, FPL is a guilty pleasure. I have a family, own a house, and have responsibilities but yesterday I had “a day off” as it were, and watched the majority of all 4 games being broadcast. It is this “investment” of time that irks the most if I don’t get the FPL pay off.

It’s not a healthy balance to watch 4 games back to back. Yes, I walked the dogs, did the odd chore around the house, but ignored other things that I know are more important than FPL.

Having targeted Norwich since the restart (DCL, you have a lot to answer for!) but then passing on Antonio, plus selling Sterling before the Liverpool game and subsequently this incredible goal scoring run, meant yesterday was particularly galling. It was Saturday evening and I had nothing to show for it; worse, there’s the realisation that if I didn’t tamper so much with my team, I’d be doing better.

I’m quite relaxed about it today. Maybe because I’m not having a great season and maybe because I know I have no control over the result. I look at my team and it’s good; it’s in the laps of the FPL gods whether I get points or not. And that’s what we have to accept.

I’d hate to think that anyone is getting depressed over FPL. It’s ok to be a little annoyed if you invest time into this game and don’t see the rewards, but then ask yourself, are you annoyed with the game or because you spend so much time on the game?

I invest way too much time on fpl but it's my hobby like you. I hate the bad weeks but I'm playing for best OR. I step away from the game for a few days if I have the hump bit generally it really makes watching the footie more fun.

It’s a form of gambling, is the long and short of it. I can go to a football match and am rewarded with the buzz of watching a live match, but when it’s on tv and I’m a neutral, then FPL gives me that buzz. I know many FPL players who transfer in a player or captain based on the game being on tv!

So if we accept it’s a type of addiction and one that gives us a false sense of control (making transfers, picking your team and captain), then it’s up to the individual to strike the right balance. That’s where the difficulty lies.

The advice is sound. Stay away from all forms of FPL if feeling down from it. Also read Davids book on FF and the chapter about the guy who won it then fell apart afterwards as it totally consumed him.

I had a decent chance to win this in 14/15 and I know I will never get that high again so I’m fairly relaxed re FF now but has not always been the case. The problem is that points become a bit like hard drugs, you are not satisfied without larger and larger amounts. So with the randomness of this game you are going to be guaranteed some massive lows which can trigger a longer term depression.

There are a couple of different angles to it
1- how important is it to you? Is it the be all & end all for your day? That'd be a bit worrying unless you're earning money off it
2- yes the game is designed for euphoric highs and depressing lows, but it's just a competition at the end of the day, take it as one, focus on certain targets, my target was to just ensure I win my college ML, which I'm leading now
3- get off twitter until the GW is over, specially when GWs are over 3-4 days, let all games be played then take stock of what's to be done

I think it's OK for people to tweet about their successful weeks as long as they can empathise with people who are having a bad week. Looking at Az's tweet and the thread that follows, he has shown compassion for folks who are having a poor week and that's a very healthy attitude to have.

We should, however, actively discourage folks who look to troll others for having a bad week and have a very "in your face" kind of attitude.

Interesting topic and clearly not for all to discuss.
It probably comes down to who you are as a person and how you approach things in life.
Some can easily just play FPL and not be invested in it, I’m sure some regularly forget to change lineups etc then there are others (myself included) where once you start FPL it’s either all in or nothing and you devote X amount of hours per day or week etc to ensure you’re across as much detail as possible to feel ‘prepared’
With that comes the unfortunate highs and lows and you just need to find ways to cope with it.
Eg: when Antonio scored his 3rd last night I was like damn wish I could have made room for him cause he was on my radar but I made other moves and it was one of those unlucky situations or lucky for others.
By nature, some people are reserved and keep their feelings (good or bad) to themselves whilst others crave the sympathy or even are masters at complaining so use social media platform to have a voice which can easily rub people the wrong way.

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
      But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:

      If you can dream—and not make dreams your master;
      If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
      And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
      And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on!’

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
      If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son!

I’m probably younger than most who have shared their opinions but I have been on the receiving end of some really bad mental health unfortunately.

First of all let’s eradicate this ‘blame culture’. It’s entirely the individuals responsibility to put down the phone, delete Twitter, ff scout account, limit their transfer thoughts etc etc.

Next thing is really understand that Fantasy Football is simply a game...their are far greater priorities in life. I think in a world now where it’s so easy to access people’s rank history, we think that if we do bad it’s the end of the world! In reality it’s only yourself that is looking at your rank history very few care more than 2 minutes.

I’ve had a shocking week. When this happens don’t go looking for FPL content if you can’t handle it- you’ll end up reading everyone’s highs and it will make you feel worse. I usually but a film on/series and don’t look or even think about it until the next day if I’m ready.

Finally I really do recommend people taking a hard think about how their life would be if FPL wasn’t in theirs. I for one believe that I would probably enjoy it a little better. The high’s these days don’t last long and don’t actually feel that good if I’m honest. Plus the amount of time I spend thinking of FPL/the stress it causes is a great deal. The only positive with FpL is that I tend to be far more interested in the Prem.

Next year I won’t be playing the game, it consumes for too much of my life. Going into my final year of Uni and think I’d be better off without it.

Just my thoughts here, don’t have to agree. Most of us care way too much about rank history thinking people care about it. They only care if you plan to do FPL on social media/offer advice.

One of the reasons I enjoyed lockdown was no FPL.
Problem is that knowing something is bad for you does not make it easy to give up.

Like saying it is only a game, easy to say, but the reality is that to us it is more than a game. The fact you have to put movies on to try and forget about it is a sign of that.

I sold Son this week, and I could not even bring myself to watch the Tottenham match (how sad is that) and now I see he scored and assisted, once again my mood has dropped.

This is a weekly experience occasionally broken up by an occasional euphoric moment when have had the luck to pick a player on the very week he hauls. An endless cycle of highs and lows depending on whether some footballer has a good or bad day.

I know it is time I stopped playing this game, I tried a few times but it is not so easy.

Athletico Nasherbo, thankfully I found FPL after Uni! You know what you need to do. Don’t let this game affect your most important final year. Good luck (if I see you on here next year I’m going to reply to each of your posts giving you grief 😀 )

I reckon quitting FPL for the year won’t be that difficult once the season starts...it’s that period in between when you’re waiting for the season to start. Really does sound like you need a year out of it!

I know what you mean, I had a mini league lead that I've held for 4 months disappear in one GW. Feels like absolute *****. Makes me feel like taking a break next season just to see how it feels. I'm not sure the highs are worth the lows.

This gameweek has been absolutely brutal, as it has been very polarising. Either you've had a astronomical gameweek or a devastating one with a microscopic score. Sickening.

I'm a huge advocate for mental health awareness and taking action.

I'd keep it simple if it's a problem dont play the game it's your choice and its up to you to look after your mental health if you feel you have issues.

Pick up a copy of dont sweat the small stuff which is the best self help book ever written.

Also an "FPL Suicide" is a fairly farcical notion. FPL is a factor but if someone reaches that point they have far far deeper issues that need professional help which I would always advise.

People should be able to enjoy winning at FPL as much as they hate losing. If it becomes a problem take yourself out the game or get some perspective on toir attitude towards it.

Over the last few gameweeks I have lost sleep over a conflict of interests -
I'm neck n neck in a cash mini-league (I could do with the cash to pay off credit card from my dog's recent operation - successful one, thankfully)
      He's got double Leicester defence
I'm a born & bred foxes fan, desperate for them to get into Europe
I want them to win AND concede!
I got to grips by thinking about being selfish and what I can actually control - which is who I pick in my team - I forgot about playing shields and pick the team I think will score the most points - If my rivals scores more then he deserves to win the mini-league.
      3 to play & I'm 12 ahead
      wish me luck
everyone stay safe & play for fun

Unfortunately with 7 million people playing the game, it's almost inevitable that there has already been an 'FPL suicide'. I just don't think it has been made public from the deceased or that it has "gone on the note" so to speak. But I think even this (i.e. FPL is explicitly given as the reason why they did what they did) is just a matter of time, which is why high profile people should watch what they tweet. In isolation, I don't think the game is dangerous, but, if you have other things going on in your life, then a crushing gameweek on top of everything else going on in your life can indeed be dangerous.

I think you need to keep some perspective on this.
It is in truth only a game and there is no guarantee that you will do well any season.

I have an 'important' H2H match this GW against Torres Magic. He has captained Sterling. You have to laugh.

You have to get out and enjoy the weather and being in nature and the company of your friends and family.
That's what is important in life

Has someone posted the link to the mental health stream they did earlier this season? That was on the nose.

By the same token, the return of FPL was likely a saving grace for many stuck at home.

As someone who suffered in the past, still suffer albeit much less, it's important when to know when to ask for help, to walk away. Stay safe all.

Having had issues with real gambling before, I got into fpl as a healthier way of playing without money.

Quite timely as it’s been a real mood wrecker in the last week. I’m normally pretty chilled (and bad!) at fpl but this season was looking good for top 10k and with lockdown spent more and more time thinking about it.

Absolutely everything gone wrong and been irrationally upsetting. So good reminder that it’s just a game, to take a step back and hope the luck turns!

I've also had issues with gambling and find fpl can bring out similar emotions, albeit without the financial issues.

For example, the feelings when something goes well, your captain scores a brace etc feels very similar to winning an all in heads up at poker. At the other end, the feeling from your captain blanking, player you would've bought in hauling etc etc is a similar negative emotion to a bad beat at poker.

As others have said, these highs and particularly the lows can be mood affecting, which is not a healthy place to be. Finding the right balance, where you are engaged, but not overly invested in the game, can be a difficult path to follow. That's certainly true for me.

with regards to comparisons to others/competition twitter can definitely create illusions. let's say you follow 100 people. first goal goes in of the gameweek, 10 of those people post about having the scorer, another 10 the assister. you have neither, but there are also 80 other people in the same boat as you but you don't realise because you just see the 20 people celebrating. the next goal goes in, same story.

there have been some brutal extreme swings in 50-50ish calls this season, feels like there are more lately than in previous season but maybe that is recency bias and they are simply fresher in the mind. will be honest and say i really struggle with them still, constantly working on this, you know once the deadline passes you can't do anything so no point worrying anymore but passion for the game still claws at you in good and bad ways. humour always a good way of coping imo, make fun of your player that is really hurting you. follow people on twitter who will make you laugh in a bad gameweek not bring you down further with caps lock nonsense, "LEEETS GOOOOOO!!!!"
to speculate i imagine the motives for playing too can affect how easy it is to deal the bad. if it's all just about cold hard rank (with money leagues an extension on top of of that) then you're surely opening yourself up to issues (of course many people do this and probably cope just fine).
go for more walks, pick some more differentials and follow fpl_partridge is my advice

Whenever i have a bad Gameweek, i just go to another distraction i have. Its the best thing to do. Don't forget about the amount of luck involved in this game and that it's supposed to be fun. Its supposed to be a healthy distraction from real life and a means to elevate watching sports. It does that for me even when i've had bad Gameweeks because you just need to not take it that seriously and laugh at yourself.

Perception is the only reality. Change your perception and you'll be fine. If it gets too much, take a break. I did that and it did wonders for me.

I have spent a decade learning to play backgammon (aka "The Cruellest Game") to a decent level. I have experienced games of astoundingly bad luck (and, of course, of astoundingly good luck).

I found that there are a lot of similarities to FPL: risk, reward, skill, luck, timing, resource management, probability, huge swings in equity, making all the 'right' and logical decisions, but somehow everything still going comically pear-shaped etc etc

FPL and backgammon have taught me to laugh at how ridiculous trying to predict the future is. They have also taught me how to deal with almost unavoidable bumps in the road of real life.

I must admit that after a bad week or a bad beat, a twinge of anger and disbelief is in me and can be damaging *if i choose to dwell on it*.
However, I have trained myself to take amusement from these improbable, almost comical sequences of disaster when they raise their funny little heads. With a long enough life, luck should, on the whole, balance out.

Can someone tell me the reason for getting Ings over Giroud or Jesus this week?

Personally, it's because the others seem like a hit waiting to happen, and I'm already planning to take enough of those!

Go with your gut. All three could score big this week. Personally I prefer Ings because he's the most likely to get 90 minutes. Giroud has been sharing game time with Abraham and Jesus' minutes will be managed ahead of the FA Cup semifinal.

I think Tammy starts again. Giru will start in FA Cup.

There is also a chance Ings might be rested with 3 games in 6 days for the Saints.

He'd want the Golden Boot. I don't think he'd be rested!

He is injury prone and the last thing the manager would want an injury before the next season.

    Ederson
    TAA Wan Bissaka Taylor

I have 2 City players, I want to bring in someone to captain as KDB is risky this week

I think DSilva might even start all the remaining three games! Starts against Bournemouth. Rests in FA Cup. Starts against Watford and gets substituted early. And starts against Norwich in his last game for City!

Some huge points swing this week with many capping Sterling and having Antonio.

Went with Martial(c), Sterling(vc) myself due to City's poor away form. Oh well...

What are people doing with Salah? I still can't believe he didn't come with a haul vs Burnley.

Arsenal might be focusing on FA Cup so expecting weaker line up against Liverpool, followed by Chelsea at home who have been atrocious defending wise.

Looking to hold, but other midfield options are tempting as well.

I think it's a good idea to hold - Liverpool have a week's break after Arsenal so there's that as well.

    What do we reckon folks?

Contemplating using FH this GW and then TC GW38.

    Martinez - Button
    TAA - Doferty - Aurier - Lascelles - Kiko
    KDB - Salah - Bruno - Saka - Foden
    Jimi - Vardy - Greenwood

Tempted to triple up on Chelsea vs. Norwich.

Would you change anything in this FH team?

    McCarthy
    Azpi Digne TAA

Those 4 subs have better fixtures in 38 if you're not worried by weird lineups...

Deeney undoubtedly the worst pen technique in the league. Keepers just need to stand dead still and they would save 90% of his attempts
