The Fantasy Football Scout captain poll is one of the safest bets when it comes to selecting the best candidate for your armband each week – but it is not the absolute best.

After some extensive research, I have discovered that honour falls to the Rate My Team tool, which has outperformed the captain poll over the last three seasons and is the single best predictor of immediate captaincy points.

This article analyses how successful various captaincy selection criteria have been over that time, comparing captaincy poll winners, highest RMT scores, and various individual and team statistics against actual points scored.

Perhaps fixtures are better than form if you know where to look. Player and team attacking stats produce mixed results, with all but one statistic consistently underperforming the three-season dataset averageAnd with player big chances being the most unreliable of all the categories studies.

Meanwhile, targeting opposition stats seems to be a more reliable strategy. The single most successful stat to target seems to be opposition shots in the box conceded

DISCLAIMER: I am no statistician. There may well be gaps in my approach, and by picking the single best player to represent a particular statistic in a particular week, I have produced a solid but not massive dataset from which to draw conclusions. Any of the criteria discussed, and the results and conclusions drawn, have the possibility to revert towards some sort of mean as more data becomes available in the future. With all this said, I hope that the data, and my conclusions, are interesting, and I will continue to collect data in the future to try to improve the dataset and produce even more reliable results.

As this article uses extensive levels of Opta data, only those with a valid Fantasy Football Scout Membership can access it in full.

THE BACKGROUND

Vote in the FPL Gameweek 30 captain poll

A couple of months ago I decided to run the numbers for the Fantasy Football Scout captaincy poll winners, each week for the season to see how many points the winners got and whether it would have been worth taking a hit for them every week.

But that got me thinking too: are the results of the captaincy poll the best predictive indicators of Gameweek performance in terms of points gained? Are there other statistics which work better? Player stats? Team stats? xG/xGI? Opposition defensive stats?

Is there really “one stat to rule them all” when it comes to predicting the best attacking score in a given Gameweek? Taking three seasons’ worth of data, I decided to find out.

THE METHOD

Taking a combination of captaincy articles and members’ data stats, I decided to identify the ‘best’ single player in every Gameweek between 2017/18 and 2019/20 to represent each of a variety of different predictive categories:

  • popularity (winning the captaincy vote)
  • FFS RMT algorithm
  • a range of player attacking stats
  • team attacking stats
  • opposition defensive stats

In order to mirror the format of David‘s captaincy articles, the dataset used was ‘last four matches’ for player stats. Because I had to reconstruct a lot of the data from the Premium Members Area, which was often not captured in the older captaincy articles, I had to use last four Gameweeks for team stats. This does create a slight imbalance when it comes to the weeks following Blank and Double Gameweeks but I decided that it didn’t make much difference.

Looking at the data, the good and bad teams tended to be top and bottom of their various statistical categories for many weeks on the trot, smoothing out any slight variations. A few spot-checks revealed only the most minor of differences, with little or nothing to affect player/team rankings.

While Scout’s captaincy picks inevitably take home/away fixtures into account, my statistical approach did not consider this factor. This is because the captain articles earlier in each season were unable to make this distinction (with small sample sizes).

Comparing home and away data is particularly relevant to opposition defensive stats and in future, I will collect this information. I will, in due course, probably do back through the data as far as I can and populate these fields for past seasons.

However, as we will see, despite a possible bias towards the captaincy poll in the dataset, particularly at the expense of opposition defensive metrics, the results suggest that we ought to target defensive stats even without taking home/away into account.

To make the results fair, to model what could realistically have been predicted without hindsight, I decided to limit the list of players to those above a certain popularity threshold. This meant limiting my selections to those players who made it into the top 10 in the captaincy poll in any given Gameweek. There are big scores from the most differential of differentials on occasion, but it cannot realistically have been expected that any serious player would have trusted them with the armband, so these less popular players were excluded from the picks. As it happens, this does not matter much for two reasons:

  1. The attacking stats tend to be dominated by premium picks
  2. Ranks 7-10 in the captaincy picks tend to scrape the barrel somewhat anyway, usually getting down to the 1% range.

My criteria for selection were as follows:

  • Captaincy poll – This was self-selecting
  • RMT – The same applies
  • Player attacking stats – The player who topped the attacking stats in each category. If that player didn’t make the top 10 in the captain poll I would move onto the next player and so on. If none of the captain contenders were in the top 10 for a given stat I would leave it blank. Being, for example, the 15th best player for touches in the box is hardly comparable with being the best player for shots in the box, and I didn’t want to skew or dilute the data. The categories are: player touches in the boxplayer shotsplayer shots in the boxplayer shots on targetplayer big chancesplayer xG, player xGI.
  • Team attacking stats – The player ranked highest in the captaincy poll whose team topped various attacking stats. The categories are: team shotsteam shots in the boxteam shots on targetteam big chancesteam xG.
  • Opposition defending stats – the player ranked highest in the captaincy poll whose opponent had the worst stats in each of the following categories: opposition shots in the box concededopposition big chances concededopposition xGC. When the captaincy poll started using opposition shots on target conceded I started adding it as well (past two seasons).

As there are only 19 possible opponents a player could face, I decided to limit the ‘worst’ teams to the worst five in each category. Expanding further would push opponents into mid-table range, and this could actually be quite respectable, so I didn’t want to skew the data by stretching this too far. Again, if no teams in the bottom five for each of these categories had a match-up against a top-10 captaincy candidate I left this datapoint blank.

Other things to note:

Blank / Double Gameweeks

I did not collect data for these. This is mainly because captaincy polls recognise players with two fixtures, and will tend to zero in on one or two top picks, whereas stats would not necessarily favour Double Gameweek players, skewing the numbers towards captains who play twice.

Blank Gameweeks limit the pool of players available to the point where, potentially, the averages are brought down, possible unevenly.

There was more than enough data over three seasons to be able to pull out hundreds of data points without factoring Double and Blank Gameweeks in.

I am aware that these altered rounds cause slight problems when we take subsequent player and team stats which look back over the last four matches. As stated above, I saw enough in the stats to suggest that players/teams tended to top their categories for many weeks in a row, and so discounted this as a serious concern.

Players tied on a certain stat

I always went for the player with the highest captaincy poll rating as a tie-breaker.

Note that I also made no weighting distinctions between players, in that a runaway leader in any of the categories are treated the same as narrow winners. I will try to think of a way of weighting those categories in the future to see how accurate they are at predicting points.

When I had finished I had something which looked like this (this screenshot is an arbitrary portion of the spreadsheet):

Best players by position:

So Kane won't play any preseason games for Spurs then? I know we'll be able to assess his sharpness for England but I was really hoping to see how Mourinho would set things up with Kane back. Son upfront with him or back out on the left makes a massive difference.

I might be wrong on this but I don't remember Son ever playing upfront with Kane. He's always been on the left, but choosing to run past Kane at times.

Son and Kane were in a front two when they faced Arsenal, he wanted to exploit the CBs and force them into mistakes.

Are people here overrating Southampton? They're fine and Ings is quality but I'm not even sure they're the best of the rest, getting flashbacks to everyone starting with a Bournemouth asset or two last season.

      Cheap-ish.

Beat Swansea 7-1 in a friendly.

Another decent friendly result and they are worth a punt.

Strangely I think Ings is the only one I don’t like - basically he had his best season ever by miles and is now priced accordingly.

Bournemouth were always an extremely flakey team - long history of blowing fixture runs.

Take your point though - distrust that defence almost on principle.

I’m wondering if Villa may turn out to be the surprise package team that finishes way above expectations around 10/11. Give Grealish a forward to aim for - Wilson say - and decide the defence was actually pretty handy at the end and it doesn’t feel that far fetched

They are the best of the rest.

Hassenhuttl has them playing a very nice pressing game that's suited to the league. They have one of the best forwards in the league in Ings and decent supporting cast. Adams also shows potential while their defense is well drilled and put up top half figures for defensive stats like shots conceded in the box and xGC.

Simply nervous as I was picking them to be top ten material for pretty much all these reasons 12 months back - even stayed true when most on here had them as relegation certs.

How much has changed? Better defence? Could be. Hope so. Really want them to shine - like the club and its ethos

        One of the best forwards in the league is a bit of a stretch surely? His numbers last season were impressive don’t get me wrong but a fair few of those were defensive mistakes and it was a freak tally compared to previously. I can name a fair few better strikers in the league, here’s 9 for starters;

Aguero, Kane, Werner, Rashford, Martial, Aubameyang, Jiminez, Vardy, even Lacazette....

Not really, Manchester players are expensive and hard to have them as part of a squad with a decent bench with only 100m budget. Part of the appeal for me for GW1 BB was the fact the most expensive options weren't available to make the tighter budget as much of an issue.

Some of the lockdowns seem to have had some economic considerations thrown into the mix. Lots of raised eyebrows that the West Yorkshire lockdowns didn't include Leeds, but did the surrounding areas.

Seen a few people wonder where VDB will play for United as they don't think he can take the more defensive Matic's position.

    Two points:

    1) Both McTominay and Fred had more PL minutes and starts than Matic this season. And while Matic did have a run of starts, Fred had displaced him again for the big EL games at the end of the season. So the idea that Matic is a nailed on first choice is wrong to begin with.

    2) Of those three midfielders only Matic is an actual DM and United have shown no interest thus far in signing any other midfielder of that ilk, despite his advancing age. In fact they're not even being linked with DMs. The reason for that is that United regularly play a system with two box to box midfielders behind a #10. There seems to be an assumption that they *have* to play with a DM, which simply doesn't stack up with what Solskjaer has actually done in his time at United.

For VDB to start in the midfield two alongside Pogba he just has to be a better B2B option than Fred and McTominay, two average B2B mids. If he is then he fits into their shape alongside Pogba just fine. As that B2B role is one he is well used to from his time at Ajax (where he absolutely did not just play as a #10), I suspect he will get plenty of gametime there for United too (while also covering for Bruno and Pogba). He would essentially be an upgrade on Fred in that role, who incidentally has been linked with a move to Galatasary anyway.

I agree, that's what I think will happen although the reason that Matic came back into the side in the first place was because we were too open to counter attacks, also I don't think Pogba will ever be a box to box midfielder, he's not disciplined enough going back, he's a deep lying playmaker.

Ole will try VDB and Pogba behind Bruno at home against teams where we're expected to dominate possession, this will almost definitely lead to more chances against us though so hopefully we upgrade Lindelof and De Gea isn't throwing every shot on target into his own net. I expect Matic will come in against tougher teams and VDB will compete with Pogba for a first team place in those games.

        Yep.

What United do at CB will be critical, especially if playing a midfield with no DM. It's interesting that all the CBs they've been linked with are either left footed or play LCB. There's a possibility that they shift Maguire to RCB so he's covered by pace at both fullback and LCB, which would allow them to play an aggressive defensive line more comfortably.

I was in your camp too. Now i just read a dutch article that made VDB choose for United is that he had a great chat with Olle where he said he'd use him in his strenght and as a 10. This is really confusing, cause VDB must know he isn't at Bruno's level (yet) and he will be benched more often than not in that case.

Also i think it makes less sense from a United perspective. I'll just hope Olle just said some nice things and will use him as a B2B anyway. Cause it would be a major waste of a talent if he's benched a lot, could have gone to any other major club then.

Saw that too but then I immediately saw a different article in the Athletic saying that VDB was excited by Solskjaer's description of how he would fit in alongside Bruno & Pogba. Which again suggests a B2B role.

A VDB - Bruno - Pogba midfield doesn't look defensively solid at all and this will be further weakened by the amount of defensive mistakes in their back four and goalkeeper. Even Bruno-Pogba-DM didn't look great, this could be even worse. Very interested to see how this works but there are too many holes in that midfield going back despite how sexy it'll look when trying to put the ball in the net. Not sure if Ole's stuck in the 1990s but we'll see.

      If playing:

      ------------VDB, Pogba----------
      Greenwood, Bruno, Rashford
      ----------------Martial--------------

Utd could put up some silly scores against bottom half opposition at times this year with that type of front 6

First sheep up for shearing - Crystal Palace GW2...

Ziyech to Greenwood or Werner to Martial the easy GW2 moves. Or I free up cash somewhere to get Rashford or even Bruno in GW2. I think I need to give it some thought, any advice?

Davies looks good value for 1 million less. Going to monitor Doherty and his starting position under Mou.

New to the members area and have never really been good at chomping down data. Any tips on how to use it efficiently rather than losing my mind in numbers?
So far all I know is Craig Dawson looks an excellent pick based on penalty box touches after the restart 🙂

As with all data chomping, go into it with a purpose.

"I want to find out which team is most likely to be defensively sound next year"

Then go into Team Stats > Defending and then look at the statistics listed.

Or... "I want to know who is better: Alli or Son from GW13-19"

Then go into Comparison Tools, stick both those guys in and the gameweek range and then look at the relevant statistics.

I lean on only a few. xG, xA, Goal attempts section including total shots, SOT, average positioning. You can use the /90 filter as well if there's a big disparity in minutes that you want to avoid skewing the data.

Just reading Bubz' thread on Doherty

I think he's worth a slot. Even if he's stuck out wide and only gets a clean sheet or two then that's not the end of the world. He's a gateway to Laporte/VVD too

    1. Cheeto__Bandito
      • 5 Years

Didnt need to read a thread to know he's a great option. Aurier was allowed to get in great positions, but is an awful player, Doherty is not.

Wolves system is what made Doherty a good option... whether we see him in and around the box or stuck wide remains to be seen but would rather Dier for 1.0 cheaper

That's the key for me. Not whether Doc will be attacking (or course he will) but whether he will attack in such a way as to be value at 1m more than other Spurs defenders. Because as it stands his attacking returns rely heavily on the particular system Wolves use.

I suspect he will be a 5.5m def overpriced at 6m. Whereas at Wolves he was potentially underpriced at that same 6m.

But people should still go for him if they rate him more or want that 6m slot anyway. He's an easy transfer to someone else in a few weeks.

        1. Pukki Blinders
          • 6 Years

I'm willing to gamble that Mou bought him for his strengths, and those strengths fit into Mou's system of playing a RWB high. Mou needed him because Doh can defend adequately, which is Aurier's Achilles heel. So with Spurs' opening fixtures, I see sufficient clean sheet points and a real chance of offensive points from him.

Jose's pretty good at this football thing, I reckon he knows more about Doherty than all of us combined and is fully prepared to use his offensive ability and poaching instinct - which he saw first-hand in the 2-3 comeback - to its full extent.

That’s a very good point. My original plan was to swap KDB in the moment I could to avoid inevitable price rises when people start transferring him in but now thinking any increase in price would be worth the potential points on offer from that match. KdB is 11.5 so wouldn’t be the end of the world. Cheers mate!

I think I’m starting to see the sense in that. I know what you mean about premiums. Can’t bring myself to get rid of Fernandes after the way he played last season and I think that KDB and Salah will score the most points. That said I’m not 100% sold on Man U replicating their end of season form so Fernandes is wait and see out of the premiums
