Az and Mark discuss mistakes from 2019/20 in first FPL BlackBox podcast

The first episode of the relaunched FPL BlackBox podcast was beamed live on YouTube last night, with our very own Az and Mark diving straight into the self-reflection.

The pair pull no punches as they discuss their mistakes from 2019/20, be it transfer strategies that failed to pay off or early-season gambles that were – in hindsight – always doomed to flop.

The thorny issue of team value gets a mention as debate rages over whether early transfers are a good thing, especially with the potential threat of COVID-related postponements disrupting short-term plans.

Taking a longer view, Az and Mark also consider what’s been holding them back in the last few seasons and how they can improve going forward.

There’s a first look at the duo’s Fantasy Premier League drafts for the new season, with the curveball picks of Matheus Pereira (£6.0m) and Eddie Nketiah (£6.0m) raising an eyebrow.

The YouTube and podcast links are below.

About the Podcast

The FPL BlackBox podcast is part of our Scout Network.

Each week, Az and Mark will look back on their decisions to reflect on what’s going right – and what’s going wrong.

The co-hosts will be analysing the mistakes they have made throughout the season, with the hope of learning from their errors to become better Fantasy Premier League managers.

There will also be assessments of other elite managers’ performances along the way, along with the usual chat on transfers and captains.

Head over to the FPL BlackBox YouTube page to subscribe now and, while you’re at it, why not do the same with the Fantasy Football Scout channel.

Are Justin & Zouma likely to start for their respective clubs for the first 4 games ?

Zouma should be first choice with Silva. Not sure how Leicester new signing impacts Justin.

James isn't nailed too as Azpilicueta most likely gonna play and he might play either on left or right which means Alonso or James gonna start.

I was planning to skip fpl for a season but I’ve been seeing posts from people who took a season or two off and lost access to their previous history and profiles. Is this a widespread concern or a one off random event? I would hate for that to happen.

To those keeping money ITB to transfer out Son/Werner to get City & United assets... When will you pull the trigger? Saturday before either has played or bravely hold out till after the games even though you may be priced out?

As always at the start of the season the websites tracking price movements will not be accurate.

Just something I'm thinking about as its an additional risk compared to benching them from the start.

Since I'm not interested in both teams for now, it's a safe move in my case. I think you will get one extra day before any price changes, or you can just 0.5 extra in bank for convenience.

Wolves assets aren't that tempting this season for me, Jiminez from 3-7 might be tempting but then there are other good alternatives during that period as well.

With just over a week now to get our tinkering done, I think I’m happy with the bulk of my squad and the biggest question marks probably hang over the ‘fodder’ players that I will be largely looking to bench. These are the players I am currently going with:

Steer/Nyland (£4m) - With Tom Heaton ruled out until October, getting on whoever looks like being the back up Villa goalkeeper looks a great way to save on funds and if you’ve got McCarthy as your first choice keeper, can even be used in GW2 when Villa entertain Sheffield United whilst the Saints play Spurs. Villa have been linked with Romero at Man United though so that’s one to keep an eye on, but even in that event I might just stick with it and go with McCarthy as a set and forget option.

Mitchell (£4m) - The Palace fullback looks like being the most likely starter at the cheapest price point at the moment, though again it’s probably a short term pick with PVA expected back after the first month or so. If Mitchell gets games at the start though then he should maintain his price or you might even make some funds if he does well and then he can be moved on to whoever else might emerge. If you’re willing to play the long game then team mate Nathan Ferguson could be the way to go, though he is currently flagged with a knee injury.

Lascelles (£4.5m) - Tricky one this as I don’t really want to go in with two punty £4m defenders and I’m looking for someone I could potentially bring in for GW’s 2 and 4 when my other defenders have tough fixtures. The pick of the defenders at this price point for me are Rúben Vinagre and Kyle Walker-Peters, but I don’t really want to double up on the Southampton defence and Vinagre for me is a player I will be looking to start more often than bench, especially looking at the Wolves fixtures from gameweek 3. In Lascelles favour is that he’s nailed on as the club captain, he has a goal in him and Newcastle had quite a good defensive record in their home games last season which is where I’ll be looking to use him. I was hoping Arsenal’s William Saliba would start and impress in the Community Shield last week, but at this point he just looks like being too much of a risk.

Bissouma (£4.5m) - The trouble with the £4.5m strikers is that none of them are starters and they could all drop in price if they don’t get minutes, which is one of the reasons that I’m looking to start with a 3-4-3 formation. Rhian Brewster looks to be the pick of the strikers and if he was to get a loan move to another Premier League team then I think his ownership would become huge, but I don’t see that happening until the very end of the current transfer window, if at all. Of the cheap mids, I like the look of Yves Bissouma who came into favour for Brighton after the restart and looks to have more about him than the other options at that price, including a cracking goal past Nick Pope on the final day last season! If you can find the funds for Tomas Soucek (£5m) at West Ham though then I would strongly recommend it, especially if you can find a place for him in your GW1 team. Though I understand Soucek is currently self isolating after coming into contact with someone who tested positive with Covid so that’s another one to keep an eye on.

So, what do you think? Fair choices for their prices or more strength needed? Do you like to have a cheap a bench as possible or are you happy to spend a bit more? Who are your favoured fodder players as we approach the new season?

I'm currently on Nyland, Mitchell, Justin and Brewster.

Justin and Brewster my most-tinkered. I was on Ayling, but just not sure about Leeds. Castagne's arrival now has me on the tinker button again. Also avoided KWP because I've got McCarthy in goals. Brewster because he might get a few minutes off the bench this season, and it's the bench where he currently sits in my 3-5-2 or 4-4-2.

So basically I need to play three of Justin, Vinagre, Soucek and (currently) ASM, with Mitchell and Brewster my s2 and s3.

I'm currently 2.5m itb, but want to keep 1.5m for a possible Son->Fernandes GW2 transfer, but it's very tempting to upgrade Brewster to a 6.0.

      McCarthy (Nyland)
      TAA, Davies, Vinagre*, Justin* (Mitchell)
      Salah, Auba, Son, ASM*, Soucek*
      Werner, Mitro (Brewster)
      2.5m itb

*the tinker spots that I need to play 3/4 of.

That's another consideration, but Auba or Salah -> KBD in GW3 also on the agenda (freeing up another 0.5m in the process).

Shame he isn’t fit but I think Ferguson will be the 4.0 who ends up being a starter longer term, and in a decent defence too.

Struggling with all the 4m defenders. Saving wildcard so looking longer term - but need the player starting gw1 when Taylor has no game.

Mitchell will lose place quickly. Ferguson won't be fit gw1

So have upgraded to lascelles 4.5 for nailed, longer term option

Rice and Soucek have the middle of the pitch wrapped.

Fornals and Lanzini (when fit) take the attacking mid role.

Noble will probably play 20 minutes a game from the bench this season until someone gets injured.

Def - Vinagre - though is he a start risk with the signing of Marcal?

Mid - Gordon - Mid seems fairly assured for starts at 4.5m, starting both pre-season fixtures.

Str - Keinan Davis - i'm looking to play 442 given the strength of FPL midfield options, and the budget forward review stated; "playing a part in all of his side’s final 11 league fixtures and starting four of them" seems the best of a bad bunch at 5.0 or below, presuming he doesn't transfer/loan out to Preston.

Is Yedlin fully fit? Maybe my Yankee bias but he's got a higher X asst and goal ratio than Lascelles, no? Lascelles probly bigger baps magnet on CS but i prefer attacking threats from mid-table defenders...

At a guess, I'd say they go with the same back 5 that started the Chelsea friendly in GW1 - Veltman, Webster, White, Dunk and March. Though it's Potter, so who knows?

He'll probably switch between Veltman and Lamptey, with Lamptey a more attacking option who might be favoured against weaker teams.

Also Burn will not just go away. You may see him as a LB in a 4 or CB in a 3, or less likely LWB.

I do think Ings is a great pick for GWK 1 but might not be as prolific as people think after that. If I get him, might well think about switching him to DCL from GWK2

Yeah and they have one of the worst defences last season as well conceding 60 goals lol. I just feel this team is overrated even taking their defence feels wrong.

Ings is the only SOU to start. Betting on a goal with BAP to lure people into buying and hope for a 0.1 profit from Martial in GW2

He’s need more than that to rise by 0.2 in a week. Highly unlikely too because a lot of transfers will be bringing in United & City players.

I don't doubt Ings, i will start Ings and Auba together and I suggest you may do the same as Auba has high chance to grab a hattrick against Fulham or maybe 3 goals from 2 GWs

If Ings or Auba blank/injured, can switch to Marty/Bruno in GW2

            1. ivantys
              • 3 Years

I'm still undecided between auba and salah as I'm def not gonna pick both since I value strikers more. Picking either would make me switch to bruno anyway in week 2 cos I'm scared bruno's price will skyrocket afterwards.

If people tipping Leeds gonna be the next SHU or WOL, then it's not an easy team for Salah to beat while Fulham has high chance to be the next Norwich so Auba is the best pick

That's actually true as I actually expect Leeds to stay up and West Brom and Fulham to go down. And I'm quite sure the pool game 1 would be low scoring as Leeds are organised in defence.

My current draft doesn't allow me to keep auba for week 2 though as bruno is a must to take or he will skyrocket in price. Even if I take a -4 it's still impossible to keep auba+bruno as I would sacrifice too much by throwing away a premium striker and son.

      Interesting podcast!

made me doubt even more between going heavy up front or at the back, or in midfield.
So i've settled (for at least the coming hours) on something like this:

      Ramsdale / Peacock-Farell
      TAA / KWP / Vinagre / AMN / Taylor
Auba (-> KDB or Sterling later on) / Salah (keep or MUtd asset) / Ziyech (also to cover 8.0 price point) / Saka / Soucek
Werner / Jiménez / Brewster (if loaned)

      Any thoughts?

Really unfair comparison because Doherty is obviously such a better pick than Dier and it makes more sense to downgrade that 1m to get Son somewhere else.

Never really considered him as my Saints attacking option, but how well do we rate Ward Prowse (6m). Granted he's not a saucy pick, but help me if you can on the following...
      - Do we think he'll score more than Armstrong/Adams?
      - Is he more nailed than the two above/worth the 0.5 over Armstrong?
      - Is it better just to go another forward around the same price (have Mitrovic) and take a 4.5 mid?

Structurally he solves a problem and all the 5.5's feel very punty. I want the option of keeping that slot for at least the first six until a clear 5-7m show themselves. Maddison is another option, though again he feels a touch dull.

JWP has been on the cusp of being a great asset since he was in short trousers.

Related the post above, what's the thinking on Leicester midfield and Maddison especially.
As with JWP, not a sexy option but a nice hold potentially until the picture clears up with new signings etc. But I looked at his stats after restart and they look a bit crud - was he injured?

Nailed I'd think, but not sure why you would want him. Ritchie if he stays?

Richie linked to go to Bournemouth so not sure I would have him in from the start

He actually gets forward judging by highlights and shoots (badly) as we know. Not a good pick in all likelihood and Spurs for all their faults are not a team to waste a spot with him.

Some advice would be much appreciated, got a couple of different picks. Also got 2.5ITB for City/United upgrades. Likely be Son who is sold GW2 for Fernandes or KDB

      McCarthy (4.0)

      TAA Gomez Walker-pieters Davies (Mitchell)

      Salah Son Soucek Armstrong (Stephens)

      Kane Vardy (Mitrovic)??

I like it. Not keen on Gomez as think there are better options for similar price. WOuld pick Werner over Kane but thats personal preference.

Jo Go not worth 5.5 I think.

Vardy train could be great if he fires and you are on early, but Leicester a bit of a question mark for me.

If no Gomez who would you go for at 5.5 instead?

      McCarthy (Button)

      TAA, Vinagre, Lamptey (Taylor, Mitchell)

      Salah, Auba, Pereira, Armstrong (Bissouma)

      Werner, Vardy, Antonio

Guess you have watched FPL Black Box above with Antonio and Pereira picks.

        Could be good.

      Too weak in midfield?
      Mccarthy nyland
      TAA dier vinagre dallas Mitchell
      Salah auba Armstrong soucek gordon
      Werner ings martial

Yes cause Soucek might miss GW1, Gordon won't play and even Armstrong is not 100% nailed

Drop Martial and switch Ings to him later when he's declared fit

I don't think so in terms of points necessarily, but might give structural issues later.

I'm having an argument with a friend about who the best portuguese player is.
I say it's Bruno and he says Bernardo. Fantasy aside, what do you think?

No doubt the correct answer is Cristiano Ronaldo

Successive Portugal coaches have preferred Bilva, but obvs he is not as spectacular.

Box to box. Maybe a change in shape for Utd to accomodate (though they'll need better FBs if they go to a diamond).

Which striker combo (price points) do you like best here?
      1. Werner, Ings, 4.5m.
      2. Werner, DCL, Adams.

1 is more conservative I think but allows an easier switch if (likely) need be to a Martial/ Rich/Aguero etc.

2 seems more exciting to be but if Adams or DCL are struggling then switching about won't be as easy.

1 for the reasons you have outlines and not over keen on DCL yet.

Messi's lawyers just issued a statement saying La Liga is wrong. There is no valid 700M release clause for Messi.

But if La Liga don't play ball he can't go anywhere (i.e. move his registration) anyway can he?

of course he can. His contract states he can break his contract unilaterally and with no fee at the end of the 2019-2020.

Now, the question is, when has the season ended? FCB says June 30th and the rest of the workd says after PSG-Bayern
