Jan Sienkiewicz was the king of the Fantasy Premier League captaincy in 2019/20, scoring a whopping 657 points from the armband, the second-highest in the whole world. We asked him to help out with the captaincy debate ahead of the new campaign’s Gameweek 1 deadline.

Quite an unprecedented 2020/2021 pre-season is drawing to a close, as we are eagerly waiting for the new FPL campaign to start. Hundreds of drafts, multiple formations, Wildcard strategies and planning early transfers; we have all been there and, in fact, we are all living in this world right now.

There is one common denominator in our efforts; trying to find the best captain. Getting the right skipper is usually a crucial component to having a successful season and Fantasy managers are looking to start the campaign strongly with the right choice. Let’s evaluate the options available for us in Gameweek 1.

As this article uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Premium Members Area, only those with a valid subscription can access it in full.

Captain Poll

Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£12.0m)  tops the Fantasy Football Scout captain poll with 53.3% of votes, as he faces a newly-promoted Fulham side in Gameweek 1.

The Arsenal striker, who has been reclassified as a midfielder for this season’s edition of FPL, is currently owned by 44.1% of Fantasy managers – which is more than the combined ownership of Sadio Mané (£12.0m, 13.3% ownership) and Mohammed Salah (£12.0m, 29.8% ownership).

The Gabonese international starred in Arsenal’s Community Shield victory two weeks ago (scoring a long-distance goal in a 1-1 draw that the Gunners won on penalties) and then netted twice in a 3-2 friendly defeat to Aston Villa behind-closed-doors.

Aubameyang’s great form is accompanied by a favourable Gameweek 1 fixture too, as Fulham’s defensive vulnerabilities are still fresh in people’s minds from the 2018/19 campaign. The Cottagers conceded a league-high of 81 goals the last time they were in the top flight, which included nine goals over two games against Arsenal (5-1 and 4-1 defeats).

Metrics

The second most popular pick for the armband among the Fantasy Football Scout users this week is Salah (25.6%). Considering that the runaway 2019/20 champions are hosting newly-promoted Leeds United, and Manchester City and Manchester United are without a fixture, it seems to some extent surprising that the Fantasy-proven Egyptian midfielder is struggling to attract more interest for the armband.

Even more of a surprise, Mané sits at third in the poll with only 3.9% of votes. The Senegalese winger, who scored 18 goals and provided 10 Fantasy assists last season, showed glimpses of class in pre-season and will be looking to improve on his impressive home record against newly-promoted opposition on Saturday.

Behind the podium we can find Chelsea’s new striker Timo Werner (£9.5m, 3.5% of votes), Liverpool’s defender Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m, 2.1%), as well as Tottenham Hotspur assets – Son Heung-min (£9.5, 2.1%) and Harry Kane (£10.5m, 1.8%).

Based on the poll, the main decision managers will have to make regarding captaincy will involve comparing Aubameyang with Salah. We will therefore mostly focus on the Liverpool and Arsenal options.

Keep ASM, punt Wilson. Harder to replace a 5.5 midfielder but there’s a few forward options around 6-7.

As in go with Wilson and have the double up or trade Wilson out? I'm not sure I'm that keen on any other options round that bracket, and think he's more proven than ASM.

Lots have potential but odds are most will be more miss than hit. Lack of nailedness is a problem with a lot of them.

Despite them being an automatic in practically all my drafts, I think I'm starting to go off the idea of Spurs defense at the 11th hour.

    - Their schedule is crazy busy. It includes foreign travel which adds an element of risk re. Covid. Injury and/or fatigue will be a real concern.
    - There seems to be groupthink on here that Dier is nailed. I think he will play a lot of matches, but D Sanchez is competition for him and most Spurs fans seem to think Sanchez will partner Toby. Also Foyth and Tanganga can play there in defense.
    - First four fixtures aren't amazing for clean sheets. Eve, Sou, New, Man Utd. Everton and Newcastle have bolstered their attacking options in the transfer window and Southampton are decent going forward.

I'm coming around to the idea of an Everton defender with possibility of switching to Dier/Davies for GW5. Problem is, is there an Everton defender (apart from Digne) who is nailed? I imagine Keane will be fairly sure starter as Holgate seems to be out for a while. I can play Soucek GW1 and bench Keane vs Spurs and play him for GW2-4 (West Brom, Palace and Brighton).

Luke Shaw is another decent option at 5mil.

      • 11 Years

Luke shaw is great option I think

And if you can fit Digne... that guy was super attacking unlucky not to get returns

I’m considering Doherty to Digne ...

Digne could be great for sure. Probably lack of set pieces is a bit of a worry though. Could then downgrade to Chilwell when fixtures turn.

Just remembered, United in the market for LB Telles apparently though which might put Shaw's place in doubt.

I would be benching Keane GW1 also.

        Keane to Dier/Davies after GW4 would give a run of Wba(h), Cpl(a), Bri(h), Whm(h), Bur(a), Bri(h), Wba(a).

We know Mourinho will be cagey so a nailed on Spurs defender for 5m shouldn't be sniffed at. I don't want to be faffing about with transfers so am starting with Davies but kinda hoping Everton score as I have DCL. We'll see.

My plan as a whole is to avoid planning transfers as much as possible, hence Bruno on the bench and this defence.

This defence rotates well for the first 10 GWs assuming Justin remains until GW 4 and Ferguson returns by GW 5. The only change I have planned in the first 10 GWs is Justin out for potentially Digne/Coleman although Im happy having this as a 'planned' change as it gives time to monitor the Everton defence as well as other options

Anyone going Havertz over Son? I'll want Havertz (or Pulisic) long term so think I'm going to go with Havertz.

I don't really trust Mourinho from an attacking perspective, so maybe a higher ceiling with Havertz.

I’m starting with puli and will double up if he plays #10

I have a feeling he’s going to start on the right for ziyech and I’m not sure that’s his best position

I think Havertz is slightly more likely to start over Pulisic, don't you think? Mount should start and maybe Pulisic from the bench. I agree with you that I don't want Havertz stuck out on the right... #8 or #10 would be ideal.

I think pulisic looked amazing in training, just got the #10 shirt and should start and be first subbed off. It’s a gw1 risk though.

The ziyech injury opens the door on the RW, less pressing responsibilities, I think Havertz starts there. He will eventually be the 10 but it’s the front ofkk no our press and I think Mount is nailed there atm

I’ve had him my draft for 4 days now.
I really want to keep him in as he looks and exciting fpl asset. I’ll keep looking out for as much info as I can up until the GW1 deadline. I’ve got a good feeling about him and he fits perfectly into my current draft with Kane, Ings, Abua and Salah

I presume no bench at all which is not good.
      Vinagre sure to start?
Double west game attack ain’t going to look too pretty by GW2

Bernard and Douglas are big risks to start. What about Johnson at West Ham. Poor fixtures after GW1 but he’s more nailed. Ferguson or Mitchell at Palace?

    Gents,
Which are the best looking choices for 4.0 gk fodder, 4.5 midf and attack fodder ?

      None to be honest.

In midfield try find someone that will start and nearly guarantee 2 points each week.

Defenders we have to wait something usually pops up just need to be quick to get the value.

Forward Brewster could be good if goes somewhere new.

GK Steer or Button probably best bets. No 1st choice keeps though.
