Bamford bags again as Sheffield United remain without a goal ahead of tough fixture run

SHEFFIELD UNITED 0-1 LEEDS UNITED

  • Goals: Patrick Bamford (£5.7m)
  • Assists: Jack Harrison (£5.5m)
  • Bonus:  Illan Meslier (£4.5m) x3, Bamford x2, Harrison x1, Luke Ayling (£4.5m) x1

The Patrick Bamford (£5.7m) bandwagon is set to continue rolling after the Leeds forward’s late headed goal saw the Whites triumph in Sunday’s Yorkshire derby.

In a pre-planned link-up the striker nodded home a Jack Harrison (£5.5m) cross, having put two headed efforts wide in the opening half.

“This one came off my nose but I’ll take it! I was a bit disappointed I didn’t score a header in the first half.

“Before the game I said to Jack, I’m going between the middle centre-back and the far one so put the ball there. First half he did it, I didn’t score.

“Second half he did it, I got the goal. Fair play to him for putting it on the money.” – Patrick Bamford

Having highlighted Leeds’ lack of creativity in the opening two Gameweeks, Marcelo Bielsa was happier with his side’s build-up play at Bramall Lane:

It was a just result. The first half was pretty even, we could have scored and conceded. Second half was a lot better for us.

We managed to attack well, we had six or seven opportunities. In that sense, the offensive animation was better.

While Leeds have scored eight times on the way to earning six Premier League points, Sheffield United have neither a point nor a goal to their name with three Gameweeks gone.

The Blades face trips to Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea, along with a visit from Manchester City, in the next five Gameweeks.

“We’ll be glad to see the back of September. Fresh start in October at Arsenal away. I can’t fault a lot of the things the players have done this afternoon. It was a really tight game.

“I’ve been told you gave the man-of-the-match award to the Leeds United goalkeeper; we’ve got to take our chances in the Premier League. That’s the top and bottom of it.” – Chris Wilder

As Wilder alludes to, this game was almost a tale of two goalkeepers before Bamford’s late winner.

Aaron Ramsdale (£5.0m) – who was well on his way to a monster haul before conceding – racked up seven saves from a combination of good stops, poor finishing and long-range efforts.

While Illan Meslier (£4.5m) made three fewer saves, the Leeds keeper’s stops were arguably more impressive.

All the same, John Lundstram (£5.4m) will himself feel he should have rattled the net just shy of the half-hour mark.

The midfielder was afforded a big chance just before the half-hour mark, as Ben Osborn (£4.9m) broke to find David McGoldrick (£5.4m) in the box.

The striker’s flick arrived at Lundstram’s feet from six yards out but the midfielder was unable to convert as Meslier managed to push the close-range effort around the post.

The 20-year-old then somehow managed to get a rangy left hand to George Baldock‘s (£5.5m) stinger, produced after the wing-back had rolled Harrison to make shooting space in the area on 37 minutes.

Bamford had signalled his intent in the opening period, heading over twice from a Kalvin Phillips (£5.0m) free-kick and a Harrison cross.

Stuart Dallas (£4.5m), who saw a looping effort tipped over by Ramsdale in the first half, was almost on the scoresheet in the second period.

Ramsdale had Chris Basham (£5.0m) to thank for clearing a Dallas effort just before it went over the line.

The Leeds full-back had rounded the stranded stopper after a mistake from Ethan Ampadu (£4.5m) allowed the ball to run through.

A surging run from Dallas then saw subsitute Rodrigo (£5.9m) head wide, before Bamford just failed to connect with a whipped ball from Harrison with 20 minutes remaining.

The Blades almost took the lead from a late corner as Jack Robinson (£4.4m) skewed wide with his weaker right foot from point-blank range after Oli McBurnie (£5.9m) just about failed to get his head on the delivery.

Bamford then stole the show and all three points for Marcelo Bielsa’s men, with the striker earning praise from his manager post-match.

Asked about suggestions that the budget FPL forward might struggle at the top level, Bielsa responded:

There are a lot of people who thought contrary to what you say.

The league season is very long. Hopefully he can continue to show his obvious qualities.

The enigmatic Leeds boss was also pleased with his side’s first clean sheet in the league:

It is an achievement we were looking for, to not concede. I think we defended well, with few errors.

Having said that, our rivals did have opportunities. We grew.

On taking off Rodrigo, who had been brought on for the second half, Bielsa explained:

A few minutes were left, I had to substitute Bamford or Rodrigo. Bamford is a very useful player on set pieces against.

But it wasn’t a good decision because Bamford was tired. I should have kept Rodrigo on the field.

Wilder, for his part, is fretful over the Blades’ lack of sharpness in front of goal.

They found a bit of quality at the end. But I think it’s a foul on Sander Berge [in the build-up to the goal] yet again. I think there’s a couple of things that haven’t gone for us the last two or three games, from a decision point of view.

I’ve just seen Marcelo is going to walk right across me right now…no, he’s not, he’s swerved me because he might be on the receiving end of a tackle if he did!

We have to be more clinical. The best chances fell to us. From John Lundstram, George Baldock, Oli McBurnie, Jack Robinson. Four or five really good chances.

The first goal is so important in the Premier League, as we all know. I thought the shape of the team was good. We know how Leeds play, we understand how they play. High energy, high tempo. It was a really quick game.

When it opens up you have to take your chances; we haven’t. We ultimately get punished by a fantastic ball and a great header.

When you look at our goals or when we do create chances, they’re well worked. We haven’t got the players in the group to do something out of the ordinary. We have to really work hard to create our chances, which we did in the game.

After three consecutive defeats, Wilder is “hopeful” more signings will arrive before the transfer deadline:

The longer it [the losing run] goes on, it becomes more concerning. There’s still plenty of belief and fight in us.

Despite being taken off after 73 minutes, FPL midfielder Oliver Burke (£4.5m) put in a decent audition for FPL bosses seeking bench fodder.

The ex-West Brom winger had two shots, one inside the box, while creating three opportunities for his team-mates.

Defender Robinson might be one for the watchlist, with the left-footed centre-back possibly set for an extended run in Wilder’s defence due to Jack O’Connell‘s (£5.0m) knee injury:

“Things are not going for us at the moment. Obvious disappointment with Jack’s injury. Massive disappoint for the boy, he’s worked extremely hard to get to where he has and he’s been pivotal to our rise.

“He’s going for an operation on Wednesday, so minimum six months.” – Chris Wilder

      Reece James - £5.0m

Gets forward a lot, and has a reasonably good set of fixtures coming up.

Only downside is he's playing with a bunch of clowns at the back, and this is coming from a Chelsea supporter!

Do you think he'll keep his place all season? Or does Azpi threaten that?

could you just put Azpi in the centre anyway?

          I think so.

Azpi is being phased out, but I have a feeling will play left back until Chilwell is fit.

          Didn't realise he'd gone up to £5.1m.

Looks solid enough. I'm weighing up him Keane or may just downgrade to Lamptey who I know ill want long term.

What puts me off Coleman and Keane is that really I want Digne.

I was burned by Jimi. I'm not moving him from my starting line up, but I'd never consider captaining him. He's usually a steady-eddy one goal a game guy, very rarely bagging a brace. I look for captains who have a chance of a proper haul.

Not keen on any of those to be honest.

Obviously Mahrez is quality if he can retain his place, but I'm just a bit tired of Pep roulette and am looking for a bit more certainty.

Zaha is a troll and Barnes is very hot or cold.

I guess I have Wolves related questions nobody can truly answer but worth a go:
Is Saiss likely to get dropped after the bad performances?
Will Podence play if recovered, due to his not taking part in the disastrous west ham game?

They do - Marcal is properly a LCB. Don't think Nuno would drop Saiss now though.

I was just looking at my WC and analyzing what went wrong. Most of us activated the WC to load up on City and Wolves. To be honest City were playing a top 6 team and WHU has constantly improved post restart. Proper time to assess is GW4.

City's opposition was irrelevant. They simply didn't turn up. It remains to be seen if Pep gets inside their heads and motivates them sufficiently. I'd say Leeds are not inferior to Leicester and will get the same reward if City are under-motivated.
Wolves were similarly out-of-sorts. In their case Nuno needs to work on tactics with new wingbacks as well as motivate them. I don't think there's any guarantee both will be on top of their games next GW.

I expect a proper bounce back from both the teams. Especially City. With Wolves, yes. Their style of play is heavily reliant on wingbacks and with changes there, its taking time to integrate but expect them to do well too next week.

Agree. I see Leeds doing well offensively in that game. I look at that City backline and feel even I would be able to score against them. City had similar issues last year too with Laporte missing so many games. I expect Leeds to attack and leave spaces for KDB and Sterling to take advantage of. Leicester were pragmatic to begin with and took their initial chances on counter.

Some thoughts on team performance so far:

    1) Fitness. Different teams are at different levels of fitness, and the pre-season was especially short.

    2) Squad changes. Players leaving can be just as disruptive as new players arriving, and taking time to bed in.

Just a few years ago managers were complaining about how disruptive it was to have the transfer window open for the first few weeks of the season. Now we hear nothing about that because of the (unfortunately) failed decision to move the transfer window forward. Europe didn't follow, so the PL had to revert.

    3) Players play for the manager. This is especially true now compared to later in the year. To be in the PL is a success (more or less) for every team. So players will trust their managers at this stage of the season - because they had success with their manager last year. So teams make improvements quickly as managers come up with solutions and players buy into what they are being asked to do.

This is more true now than later in the season. Later on, when some teams stop playing for the manager (if tactics aren't working), that's when they can get into trouble, and that's when it's easier for us FPL managers to identify whipping boys.

We have a tendency to assume things are constant and not dynamic. But, as mentioned, managers will be aware of how their teams are performing and try to improve them.

    4) There's a saying in boxing that "styles make fights".

We could think about that in terms of football matches. For instance, City remain vulnerable to 'rope-a-dope' style football, which of their upcoming opponents is capable of executing that style of play, as Leicester did on the weekend?

City are great punchers but have a terrible chin. They remind me of Wladimir Klitschko before he employed the great Emanuel Steward. The difference with City and Pep, is that they can afford to buy a new chin (defence). Pep's style is to smoother teams with the sheer volume of punches, that often works but opponents always have a puncher's chance against them.

And, worryingly for Pep, they didn't produce the volume of punches needed to keep Leicester at bay, especially in the second half. Allowing the Foxes to grow in confidence as City's old wounds opened up. (Apologies to those of you who aren't boxing fans!)

Related to this idea of 'styles makes fights' is formation. We often hear people say "so-and-so is playing out wide, he won't be as effective", but a football match is not static, teams are not rigid in their line-ups.

Some football managers break a match down into four moments: in possession, out of possession, attacking transition, defensive transition. Then there are also set plays (corners and free-kicks), goal kicks, restarts, and throw-ins. Players will fit into different positions for each of these moments.

Then goals change matches. Teams can change shape if they go really attacking (needing a goal) or defensive (trying to hold onto a lead). This affects the four different moments of the game.

So, for example, 'styles make fights': Spurs v Southampton. It didn't matter that Son was on the left, the Southampton high-line afforded him plenty of space. And as the match progressed it just played more and more into Tottenham's hands.

    5) After the International Break I expect things will begin to settle down a little: the transfer window will have closed, squads will be settled, teams will have better fitness, and managers can get to work on developing their philosophy and tactics. For instance, I expect to see improvement from Chelsea as Lampard figures out how best to use his new players, and the players develop relationships on the pitch.

But some things won't have changed: the schedule will still be intense, and teams will still be affected by the odd Covid case (hopefully nothing more serious than that). Various factors make this a more challenging season than normal.

Those are some of my thoughts so far. Interested to know if you agree/disagree.

Agree completely, there has been a huge amount of variance in the league so far this season for all the reasons you talk about above. I used my wildcard last week and obviously have a poor week this week but yet i'm actually very hapy with it, as was largely played to change my team structure - frankly if i played it again this week i would very likely still have 13 of the 15 i have now.

We can definitely expect a reaction from City and Wolves.

Leeds will be an interesting challenge for City and I expect them to get more space than they did against Leicester. Nonetheless, Bielsa will be working to improve his team defensively, but I don't expect them to suddenly adopt a Leicester City approach. And such an approach probably wouldn't work for them anyway.

And Wolves is tricky. Nuno is a good manager and will be working to put things right, integrating the new players. They should get chances against Fulham, who need to improve fast. Interested to see how they perform this evening.

      1) Squads are all at different levels of preparation. Is it surprising that the clubs who were / are playing in Europe (Wolves, Man Utd, Spurs, Chelsea, Man City) post-lockdown are finding it tough?

      2) Integration of players. Some squads such as Chelsea have had a revamp and the managers have not worked out what to do tactically

      3) Injuries. Some squads such as Burnley and Man City are feeling the extent of their injuries.

      4) Handball rule. Has added randomness into when penalties will be given, which is impacting CS and goals scored. The rule leads to more instances when penalties may be given and you can't predict in advance which match a player is going to handball it and give away a penalty.

The handball rule is massive, although there is also some terrible defending (City's penalties yesterday all due to this).

When deciding on who to buy/sell considering who the penalty takers are is really important. I wonder who the penalty taker for Chelsea will be when Jorginho isn't playing?

Post GW1. Everybody had him + 0.5 to switch to Martial.

i transfer out depends on the guy your getting in. Who you looking at?

I dont mind the patience approach and holding both. seems a minefield out there. Some really low WC scores this week sums it up
