The Scout Academy discusses which FPL players to pick from Manchester City

Manchester City are usually an easy team to invest in for Fantasy Premier League managers but this season they have proved a trickier prospect.

The 2020/21 campaign has, admittedly, not been kind to Pep Guardiola’s men with Sergio Aguero (£10.4m), Kevin De Bruyne (£11.5m), Gabriel Jesus (£9.3m), Aymeric Laporte (£6.0m), Benjamin Mendy (£6.0m), Nathan Ake (£5.5m), and Fernandinho (£5.5m) all missing out with injuries at various stages.

And let’s not forget that Riyad Mahrez (£8.4m) and Ilkay Gundogan (£5.4m) tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19) within the last few months, so it is no surprise things have not been plain sailing for Manchester City.

We asked members of the Scout Academy to give us their thoughts on what to do with their assets in the coming Gameweeks.

Mahrez starts for Man City as Leeds deploy FPL defender out of position

Manchester City pictured in their game against Leicester City in September

While there have been issues for Manchester City so far, I think they are starting to ease up, mostly in midfield. The recent return of De Bruyne really bolsters their attacking potential and, my view is that Sterling will benefit playing as a false-nine, as well as being safer from Pep Roulette until Jesus is fit again.

The fixtures are nicer than they look too. Sheffield United are yet to keep a clean sheet this season and, after that, it’s Liverpool, who have been defending poorly for a while anyway, even before they lost Virgil van Dijk (£6.4m) to injury.

If you can cope with the possibility of rotation, I think the best value could be in Phil Foden (£6.6m). I think it’s only a matter of time before Manchester City explode with goals – I will be looking to invest especially with the lack of clean sheets in the Premier League so far.

Sergio Aguero

We hold Sterling currently and now that Aguero is injured once more, we expect Sterling to play as a false-nine where he had two great chances vs West Ham.

The Englishman will need the creativity of De Bruyne and Foden behind him though to break through the stubborn defensive line-ups they are having to come up against. Foden is great value though if you can handle the possible rotation.

Cancelo and Sterling Celebrate a Champions League goal for Man City last season

My choice for Man City is a defensive one in João Cancelo (£5.4m), priced at just £5.4 he got an assist in Manchester City’s 1-1 draw with West Ham.

The full-back looked very attacking during the game, getting forward a lot and registering five crosses and two key passes. He also put up 24 passes in the final third with seven touches inside the box.

This shows just how much he manages to get forward, very good on the eye test with Sheffield United up next.

If Manchester City can sort out their defensive problems, which the return of Laporte should help facilitate, we could see value at both ends of the field for Cancelo.

How De Bruyne's new Man City role affects his FPL credentials this season

Kevin De Bryune scores a penalty against Wolves

Manchester City’s start to this season has not been promising. The lack of creativity in the midfield and injuries has really hampered their attacking output.

That said, I am still excited about the prospect of Sterling playing at false-nine for the next couple of weeks before Jesus comes back.

Other options include De Bruyne who should now be fit to start, Foden a differential pick but there’s a risk of rotation and Cancelo whose numbers over the last two matches look decent: two attempts on goal, five key passes and had 10 touches in the box.

Now the question arises whether is it really necessary to get in a Manchester City player the answer according to me is to wait and watch the game against Sheffield and then decide.

With the likes of Kane, Son, Mane, Salah and the other premium players looking in good form it really will cause trouble again to fit in a premium Manchester City asset.

Phil Foden celebrates scoring for Manchester City

Manchester City have yet to hit the form we know they’re capable of with regards to both league perfomance and FPL returns. However, after a tough run of fixtures, coupled with injuries to crucial players, it’s not all doom and gloom.

We saw the return of De Bruyne in Gameweek 6 and, while Aguero may have succumbed to yet another injury, the kindly-priced Jesus is also not far from a return to action.

This sees them possibly returning to a starting XI that put Wolves to the sword in Gameweek 2 and where De Bruyne, Foden, Sterling and Jesus all got in among the attacking returns.

Combine this with a lovely run of fixtures between Gameweeks 10 and 15 and it’s not difficult to make a case for some Manchester City assets in our squads.

This also coincides with the a very nasty run of fixtures for the heavily owned and similarly priced Spurs assets. Any FPL managers that are trying to stay ahead of the curve may well look to a Spurs/Man City switcheroo.

Foden, Sterling and Aguero discuss a conceded goal for Manchester City

Hot Take #1: Manchester City have peaked. Every year they seem to lose more big names than they bring in. Their strikers can’t stay fit. We all know that Pep seems to get jaded and bored after a few seasons. Their attacking numbers are falling off a very steep cliff.

Hot Take # 2: Manchester City are a ticking time bomb of FPL points absolutely waiting to explode the moment we forget about them. It appears that a ridiculously good run in fixtures starting in Gameweek 10 will coincide with a return into the side for Jesus (depending on how we interpret his own Twitch Live stream).

The truth is likely somewhere in the middle. In fact, literally in the midfield. Poor value in defence and unreliable strikers means that the Manchester City midfielders will be our only options in the near-term. It will only take a few hauls from De Bruyne to remind us how much of a season-keeper he is. Couple that with a few blanks from the Spurs men, and we will be ripping up our template very quickly. Simply put, Kevin is the only Man City player I am considering until their Double Gameweek is confirmed.

I’ve had him since GW 3 - has started most games except the last but still came off the bench and got 6 points in a week where most assets flopped

      I’d start him over Konsa

His performance last time out was impressive even if Wolves haven’t been scoring much. Jimmy is always hungry. The goal against Newcastle was astonishing.

I am not going with Salah because Mané is becoming a serious threat & Liverpool aren’t attacking well. I think they will be more cautious at the back with the injury list they have, West ham are also solid even better than Sheffield.

Not going with Son too, I think he only had 1 shot against Burnley. I still don’t know what type of football Mourinho plays.

For the love of Friday night football, Jimmy gets the armband, the Mexican Sensation(C) 😉

I'm a Jimmy owner and fan and see him and Ings as great set and forget options who will get very close to 200 points once the season ends assuming they stay fully fit.

But as a captaincy option Jimenez just isn't that explosive and has only 6 double returns (2 goals, 2 assists or a goal and an assist) in 82 PL games.

Best of luck with it however and given my recent failures with captaincy perhaps i shouldn't be quite so sniffy about consistent, albeit low ceiling, returns.

Currently on Salah & Sterling with double pool defence.

Would you take a -8 to to get in Kane & Son by removing Sterling & TAA?

    Martinez Steer
    TAA Robbo Konsa Mitchell Johnson
    Salah Sterling Hamez Pereira Anguissa
    Ings DCL Maupay

My takes as a City fan.

Dias (5.5 DF) - We've kept 17+ CS the last three seasons and he's nailed alongside Laporte. Scored 1 every 10 league games for Benfica and those number should only improve with the number of set pieces we win and KDB's deliveries. He's an excellent set and forget until GW38.

Foden (6.5 MD) - Recall that Mahrez was excellent value at 8.5 last season with 175 points and Foden looks a bargain at 2M less. Pep loves him, he's playing very well with decent underlying stats, IMO he's the best choice in that price bracket and a set and forget. He'll win double figure hauls just by being on the pitch in the 5-0s, 4-0s etc.

KDB (11.5 MD) - The fact that Pep's using a 4-2-3-1 over a 4-3-3 improves KDB's appeal greatly. He had 7G and 16A in 21 matches at CAM last season, his advanced positioning with Rodri and Gundo behind him is a major boost to his viability.

Sterling (11.5M MD) - He seems to been given added responsibility by Pep, taking the captains armband on multiple occasions. One of the most explosive players in the game capable of hat-tricks and braces, we know what he can do.

I wouldn't worry about the poor offensive form so far, the very late start to the season and multiple injuries have impacted the team negatively. The team should be back to their best soon - the Marseille display is encouraging - and the GW10 fixture swing offers managers a chance to skyrocket their teams up the ranks.

Possibly, my mind goes back to the 4-0 from last season - that was with VVD in! Difficult to call that game until I see the West Ham and Sheff Utd ones.

Best combination? Dias, Foden and KDB/Sterling from GW10?

      1. Flair
        • Fantasy Football Scout Member
        1 month, 3 days ago

That's the overall best combo most will go with - get the clean sheets when we dominate the match with 70% possession, Phil is easy to get and KDB/Sterling you can captain almost every week in that run.

Aguero and/or KDB alongside Sterling is tempting but has its own issues so I like that triplet.

      Interesting.
How do you see the next 3 games for City panning out?

Who do you think is the best City attacker to have, KDB or Sterling?

      1. Flair
        • Fantasy Football Scout Member
        1 month, 3 days ago

Overall points are likely to be in favor of KDB due to penalties and the #10 position has him more advanced so I'm more comfortable captaining. Sterling should hit 20+ again this season and is the main goalscorer of the team. You can't go wrong with either but I prefer De Bruyne.

Sheff Utd showed improvement but should have conceded more to Liverpool, however I'm not convinced we're back to our best so 2-0, 3-1 is the prediction. KDB's return is always a boost.

Liverpool and Spurs are 50/50s. Spurs are managed by Jose who's mastered his counter attack with Son and Kane's pace and will bus park as he loves to do, it will be a tricky one. Liverpool are still a strong team but the cracks in the armor are appearing, I believe we'll win both - the Dias and Laporte combination has the potential to be the best in the Prem - but a draw to Spurs wouldn't surprise me.

He was benched yesterday with Zinchenko back and with that rotation risk I can't see why you'd chose him over Dias, who will get returns off set pieces anyways.

Doubt it, considering they're both left footed. Doesn't mean it's not possible but much less likely. Pep just doesn't rotate this CBs, Dias is the better player, our Kompany replacement and Dias-Laporte should be the preferred partnership in the PL.

    1. BoleynWin
      • 3 Years
      1 month, 3 days ago

He’s fit & the only reason he has been left out of the squad was so he can really click in training & get up to speed on tactics etc. I expect him to get some minutes against Liverpool this weekend then you’ll soon see him starting on the left wing for us, his Championship stats were extremely impressive so I’m hoping he hits the ground running.

I’m still backing Bowen as the main FPL option however.

      1. Pukki Blinders

Bowen the most nailed WHU mid you think?

        1. BoleynWin
          • 3 Years
          1 month, 3 days ago

I personally think Bowen is our top Midfield option FPL wise yes. He’s absolutely nailed in that right wing position, competition is limited there.

A lot will depend on how long Antonio is out for though, Haller stepping in changes our style of play as there should be much more emphasis on crossing from the wings. This could be great news for owners of Coufal/Masuaku at wingback, I also see Benrahma benefitting from thats system as his delivery looks spot on from the few times I’ve watched him play.

Super player for sure. Very sad Palace didn't nab him in the end.

Not wholly convinced of his FPL credentials though. What's his likely GI? Suspect he's one to shove on watchlist and monitor for a burst of form.

WH will be scoring goals but not seeing - in the absence of Antonio - a nailed on returner. See points being shared around

How good is that fixture run? It's fairly short term surely.

Three decent ones then nasty enough. Spurs and Leeds I see as tricky ones. They're both teams that will put huge pressure on that awful defence and that in turn could upset attack.

Also SU and Burnley are capable defences that are underperforming. Wouldn't be surprised to see them both have an uptick.

Much more about Chelsea gelling than fixtures imo. If Chelsea do gell they can put goals past anyone.

If you still have your WC do you have a planned time to use it? GW9/10 perhaps for a nice fixture swing? Or any other good options to consider?

Gw9, perfect as you get the swing and IB to work with

Guys, is Cresswell worth extra 0.5, or Coufal at 4.5 is the best choice?

Both good picks and correctly priced. Cresswell is the better option

I would rather pick Coufal and bank the 0.5

Masuaku might be worth a look.. stats not far off Cresswell's. And 0.5 cheaper

Another dreadful GW and sitting at 3.2m. I will save my FT depending any injuries.

Which player to start and first on the bench?
    1. Bissouma (A vs TOT)
    2. Justin (A vs LEE)
    3. Taylor ( H vs CHE)

    0.4itb 1ft
    Martinez
    Robbo Ayling TAA Justin*
    Grealish Salah Son Rodriguez
    DCL Kane
    (Peacock Taylor* Bissouma* Vassilev)

Easy decision mate, play Justin and Biss first on bench
