BRIGHTON 1-1 SHEFFIELD UNITED

  • Goals: Danny Welbeck (£5.5m)| Jayden Bogle (£4.3m)
  • Assists: David McGoldrick (£5.2m)
  • Bonus: Welbeck x3, Solly March (£5.0m) x2, Leandro Trossard (£5.8m) x1
  • Red cards: John Lundstram (£5.0m)

ARE YOU WEL?

Danny Welbeck (£5.5m) came off the bench to rescue a point for Brighton against a ten-man Sheffield United in Gameweek 14.

The striker, who was rotated by Graham Potter amid the congested fixture calendar, was sent on to replace Neal Maupay (£6.1m) after 65 minutes.

A Brighton free-kick in the 88th minute was poorly dealt with by Sheffield United, as the ball hit off Chris Basham (£4.7m) before landing in front of Welbeck.

The budget forward made no mistake from extremely close range, while also mopping up three bonus points for his 1.4% ownership.

Welbeck has four attacking returns in over the past six Gameweeks and only made his first start for the Seagulls in Gameweek 8 after building up match fitness.

The striker does have plenty of competition in the Brighton ranks but Gameweek 14 was his first time on the bench since making Potter’s XI in Gameweek 8.

While another benching in either Gameweek 15 or 16 is very possible given that little more than 48 hours separates Albion’s next two fixtures, Welbeck is posing the Seagulls’ main goal threat at present – Aaron Connolly (£5.3m) and Neal Maupay (£6.1m) haven’t scored in the last ten Gameweeks – and he will likely start more games than not in the weeks ahead.

He was denied a second goal when his late, on-target header was cleared by Basham, with a follow-up effort from Alireza Jahanbakhsh (£5.4m) hitting the crossbar.

TROUBLE BREWS

Rhian Brewster (£4.5m) lasted just 53 minutes on his first start Sheffield United start since Gameweek 8.

A first-half red card for John Lundstram (£5.0m) may not have helped the budget striker’s chances of staying the course at the Amex.

But Brewster has only managed 90 minutes once so far in his fledgling Blades career.

While the ex-Liverpool forward may have looked a budget blessing for FPL bosses after his transfer to Bramall Lane, it appears that Brewster is currently more of a curse in Fantasy terms.

JOHN LUNGESTRAM

Former FPL hero John Lundstram (£5.0m) received a VAR-assisted red card late in the first half for a lunging, full-force tackle on Joel Veltman (£4.3m). The midfielder will miss the next three gameweeks.

Sander Berge (£5.0m) was sidelined in Gameweek 14 with a hamstring injury and is now a long-term injury loss for the Blades, as Wilder finds himself without two senior midfielders for Christmas.

“A real freak injury. He has ripped the tendon away from the bone.” – Wilder on Berge

John Fleck (£5.6m), however, is available after being hooked in the first half on tactical grounds. Wilder explained:

It wasn’t an injury to John, it was a tactical one. We wanted to get another body at the top of the pitch.

Lundstram’s dismissal forced Wilder into a 4-4-1 formation for a short period in second half, before Brewster’s substitution saw a return to a back five. As can happen when teams go down to 10 men, it was a case of Brighton attack versus Sheffield United defence in the second period.

The Blades’ plan to soak up pressure and counter attack when possible worked to perfection on 63 minutes as substitute Oliver Burke (£4.3m) found Enda Stevens (£5.1m) in the Brighton half.

The Ireland defender found the run of his countryman David McGoldrick (£5.2m), who slipped the ball across the box for Jayden Bogle (£4.3m).

The Premier League debutant, who replaced Brewster, saw his effort deflect off Adam Webster (£4.4m) before looping over Robert Sanchez (£4.4m) in the Brighton goal.

SET PLAY TO THE WHISTLE

Both of these sides play in Blank Gameweek 18, with the Blades welcoming Newcastle to Bramall Lane while the Seagulls face a trip to Manchester City.

That looks to be the next time FPL bosses will consider captaining a player facing either Brighton or Sheffield United, with Man City assets the standout picks on paper despite several lacklustre showings in attack.

Brighton’s defensive numbers, then, will be of keen interest over the coming Gameweeks but not much can be read into those statistics from this particular game considering the Seagulls’ numerical advantage.

Owners of Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£7.9m), meanwhile, will be pleased to see that Sheffield United conceded another eight shots from set plays against Brighton. The Toffees visit Bramall Lane in Gameweek 15.

On the missing Tariq Lamptey (£4.8m), Potter said pre-game:

Tariq has got a slight problem with his hamstring, so he’s ruled out of the game.

Brighton XI (3-4-2-1): R Sánchez; White (Zeqiri 71′), Webster, Dunk; March, Bissouma, Lallana, Veltman (Jahanbakhsh 46′); Trossard, Maupay (Welbeck 65′); Connolly.

Sheffield United XI (3-5-2): Ramsdale; J Robinson, Egan, Basham; Stevens, Fleck (Burke 32′), Ampadu, Lundstram, Baldock; McGoldrick (Osborn 70′), Brewster (Bogle 53′).

If planning to WC in GW20

    For DGW19 BB, Should I:

    A) Double up with Creswell + Coufal
    B) Get Justin instead of Coufal

I’d double on the West Ham lot unless you have other players from their squad to target, they have a lot of value all over the pitch.

What should I do with my 2ft :/??

    Martinez-4.0
    Robbo-Dallas-Dias(Justin-Nkounku)
    Bowen-Bruno-Kdb-Salah(Bissouma)
    DCL-Bamford-Wilson

Should I just use it on Wilson to Adams? I'm most likely FH GW18.

Looking at the doubles, I’m struggling to identify goalkeepers for the bench boost, who are people targeting?

McCarthy - already in place for a lot of teams, good fixtures, lots of saves
Fabianski - arguably the best defensive fixtures in the week, but is there more value in the defenders?
Allison - expensive despite good fixtures
Pope - under the radar l considering playing Liverpool but could be good for West Ham
    Kasper - cheaper options elsewhere?
    Meslier - saves, and...what?
Mendy - good double but fixtures surrounding I’m not so sure of
    De Gea/Henderson - there’s your problem
Areola - it’s Fulham, but they have been improving
West Brom - it’s West Brom, and it’s big Sam

Currently for me I’m tickling with McCarthy and either Mendy or Flappy.

For BB, I would go McCarthy and Fabianski

He’s high on my list thanks to the fixtures, only downside is that means one of the West Ham cheapies misses out (I have Bowen already)

Tbh, seeing only DGW19, Meslier + Fabianski is ideal but then again I'd rather have Dallas + Coufal/Creswell rather than the keepers

So if you want to see fixtures surrounding the double as well, then any 2 of these depending on budget:

      Mendy/McCarthy/Johnstone

What are your thoughts on Mendy? He was in before I looked at the fixtures and I just wasn’t convinced in all honesty.

Chelsea's defense is solid although they have been conceding recently but Mendy has a low ceiling, won't make many saves but I expect Chelsea to keep good amount of Clean Sheets in the coming weeks

McCarthy and Johnstone can offer saves and have a higher ceiling, can come extremely good if somehow manage to keep one CS in the double

if I just take this keepers option without knowing the rest of the team, for me it's between fabianski and Mendy.

Surely having Kane and Son/ one of them vs Sheffield United in GW 19 is better then most players with double gameweeks!?

unless somehow Sheffield improve their defence by a lot, which i dont think it will, yes i can agree.
want to have both tbh, but cant seem to fit them.

It’s the classic single fixture vs double issue, I remember a few years ago Kane and Son did something similar in a big win with their single during the double.

      Depends on who you're getting
I believe Vardy will outscore Kane
Not many options in mind apart from probably Rashford who can outscore Son in that price bracket

folks, help me choose between these options.
the considerations are for DGW19 but without sacrificing too much of BGW18, because for now I tend to choose not to use chips. also a little bit of long term consideration.

    1. Kane, Chilwell, coufal, Cavaleiro, bowen
    2. Son, Chilwell, Creswell,Watkins, bowen
    3. Son, Robbo, creswell, watkins, soucek/cavaleiro
    4. Kane, Robbo, Coufal, 2 of Soucek/cavaleiro/Klich

    my team right now:
    Martinez/button
    Chilwell/Lamptey/Dallas/Bednarek/3.9
    Salah/KDB/Bruno/Grealish/ASM
    DCL/Bamford/Watkins

    or any other suggestion?

I can get below teams for 18-19 with only 1 hit and without using any FH/WC (barring injuries). Would that be good enough to prevent a big red arrow or you still prefer building up for BBGW19 and FH18 or something like that? I have 7 BGW18 and 6 DGW19 players atm (plus Forster and Brewster).

    GW18 (8 playing):
    Martinez
    Stones Dier
    KDB Son Grealish
    Kane Wilson

    TCDGW19 (8 DGWers + Kane/Son/Martinez)
    Martinez*
    Chilwell Coufal Dallas
Salah (TC) Bruno (V) Son* Soucek
    Kane* Bamford Adams
    Forster Grealish Stones Dier

This is likely to be the biggest dgw so not sure why you’d save your chips. Plus teams have everything to play for so it’s set up nicely to BB or TC in 19

      1. Runaway

My team is kind of balanced atm (6 to 7) and Kane/Son game in DGW19 is quite enticing. I agree this might be the biggest DGW and could be ideal for BB but to get the full benefit from BB, you should loose either or both FH and WC and I do not feel confident to do that in the midpoint of season. I also believe FH in BGW29 may make a huge difference as in many of previous seasons.

As far as I understood from Ben Crellin's calendar, GW29 is the one coinciding with the FA Cup quarter finals. In previous seasons, we had 3-5 games in that GW and I used all of my FHs (except the last one because of the different layout of games during Project Restart) since the launch of FH chip.

Depends to some extend on what value they are/were when you bought them in to your team. I paid 5.1 for Zouma and the gap between him and Chilwell then was around 0.8. The price gap between their respective values since have shortened to 0.4, so I would be leaning towards Chilwell now if I were considering either

Really depends on who you want for 19? Wilson to Adams this week and then I’m going to lose kdb after Newcastle - was thinking of getting kane but now looking at Vardy with the extra fixture (and fixtures are great for Leicester as well). So Wilson to Adams this well and maybe kdb and DCL to rafinha and Vardy next gw. That should also give you cash to get a good BB for 19

Championship level striker like Mitrovic and Gayle.

Not involved in build up play.
      Can't stay onside.
Has limited threat in the air so crosses are no use to him.
      Poor first touch.
      Can't take penalties.

Villa are playing well without him being involved i.e. it is despite him they are doing well.

He is involved in build up play and is good at making runs to open up space for midfielders attacking the box. His first touch is average and who cares if he can't take penalties, they only need 1 pen taker in the team.

Not staying onside is his only significant flaw, mainly due to him originally being a winger and converted to a striker later on his career.

Is Dallas attacking enough to switch Ayling for? I have 2 transfers and have the rare opportunity of being able to make such a luxury move.

Hey folks, which FH strategy would you recommend here? 2FT and 0.2m

    Martinez -- Forster
Chilwell* James* Taylor* -- Lamptey Douglas
Salah* Bruno* Kdb Son -- Burke
    Bamford* Dcl Watkins

    - Have 7bgw18 players
    - Have 6dgw19 players but james might be out over that period
    - with only 5FT's left, i will be able to get max 11 dgw players without any hits but that means ignoring Kane.

    A: Build towards 18 and FH19
    B: Build towards BB19 and FH18

This is basically my team. Right now, my plan is FH18. 9 dgw players + Martinez + Son (no BB, maybe TC if i want)

WC20 is a big risk in my opinion, surely it will be more essential down the line.

Probably but if you can "build" for BB19 right now, you can also build for another DGW later on

But yes, won't advise WC20 if you're not going for BB19

Looking at BB in 19, do you think matip is too risky? Looking at James replacements and nice cheap way into pool defence but he can’t seem to play more than 3 games without getting injured!

I would have Robbo or Taa or even both if you have a high TV , Matip does'nt offer much in attack

Would love robbo and taa. I could go down this route but would mean no Vardy and weaker bench for 19 so would then use tc and not BB. Liking the look of Vardy and BBing the likes of Martinez coufal Vestergaard rafinha for 19

    REPOST - no answers...

Would you BB this team in GW 19?

    Fabianski (Martinez)
    Zouma, Coufal, Dallas (Dias, Taylor)
    Soucek, Bruno, KDB, Salah, Son
    DCL, Bamford (Brewster)

Will use my first WC in GW 16 to get this team and FH in GW18. Could also do DCL, Brewster, Fabianski --> Adams, Haller, McCarthy - but have 0.5m tied up in DCL so will not be able to get him back in the team.

    What do you guys think?

I’d lose kdb and get a better bench. Brewster is 1 or if you’re lucky 2 pts

You’re using your FH in 18? Would prefer Vardy from 16 until 20 and can see how city are playing and always get him back in

FH in 18, yes. True that, LEI have pretty good fixs as well. I will make up my mind after next GW then. Not to much value tied up in KDB and it meens I can keep DCL.

    Kane - DCL - Bamford
