Newcastle United 1-1 Fulham

  • Goals: Callum Wilson (£6.6m) | Matt Ritchie (£4.9m) own goal
  • Assists: Tosin Adarabioyo (£4.5m)
  • Bonus: Wilson x3, Adarabioyo x2, Sean Longstaff (£4.7m) x1

Callum Wilson (£6.6m) was essentially the only Fantasy man in town for Newcastle’s draw with Fulham, and he didn’t disappoint.

The 17.3%-owned striker scored his eighth goal of the season to earn a point for the Magpies in a game long on controversy and a lot shorter on the nicer things of a footballing life, such as ‘interest’ and ‘skill’.

One-Man Show

Aside from Wilson, the next most popular Fantasy Premier League (FPL) asset on display was Fulham forward and ‘ghost team’ staple Aleksandar Mitrovic (£5.5m and 4.3%).

But, like the rest of his season so far, the less said about him, the better.

It really was all about Wilson on Saturday night – and not entirely for good reasons.

He earned the penalty that drew his side level by throwing himself down in the area under a challenge from Joachim Andersen (£4.5m).

Referee Graham Scott initially awarded the penalty and although VAR showed what contact there was probably started and finished outside the area, he stuck with his decision and sent off Andersen for good measure.

That prompted one of the more honest managerial comments, from Fulham boss Scott Parker, post-match:

I think there will definitely be an appeal. I’ve gone and looked over the penalty incident and I’m not saying this with emotion or bias: I don’t understand how he’s given the penalty.

The game has changed drastically, hasn’t it, and I think we can see that. For what I have just seen – and I’m not standing here trying to defend it – the contact was made outside of the box and he then goes into the box and dives.

Not that Wilson’s FPL ownership were complaining when he picked himself up off the floor, slotted home the penalty – his fourth of the season – and earned maximum bonus for a nine-point haul.

Wilson is currently the fifth most prolific striker in the game, with 82 points, and only eight players have a better total overall.

In the six games in which he has found the back of the net, he has gained bonus points in all of them.

The ‘Best’ of the Rest

Despite all those points, investing in Wilson over the short term looks ill advised.

Newcastle travel to Manchester City next before there are visits from Liverpool and Leicester City either side of New Year’s Day.

Defensively, they’ve kept just one clean sheet in 12 matches, and the 3,322 brave souls who hoped Matt Ritchie (£4.9m) might help rectify that were treated to a comedy own goal when a wayward header from Tosin Adarabioyo (£4.5m) hit him in the face and went into the net.

As for Fulham, starts for Mitrovic and Tom Cairney (£5.3m) didn’t particularly galvanise the Cottagers’ attack, although the latter did end up joint-top for attempts, with three.

Ademola Lookman (£5.0m) and Bobby Decordova-Reid (£5.3m) spurned their best chances, which has been a recurring theme for the team as a whole this season.

A team that’s scored just twice in four Gameweeks might not worry their next three opponents, Southampton (at home) and Spurs and Burnley (both away), while the loss of the quietly impressive Andersen will be felt at the back on Boxing Day.

Since making his first start in Gameweek 7, he’s helped the side to both of their clean sheets for the season while conceding nine goals in eight games – they’d let in 14 in the first six.

The prospects of Che Adams (£6.0m) returning points appear all the better for Andersen’s unavailability – appeal pending, of course.

Despite the recent upturn in form, a tricky schedule and a Blank Gameweek 18 is unlikely to inspire much investment in this Fulham side, with even their pair of Double Gameweek 19 fixtures involving visits from Chelsea and Manchester United.

Newcastle United XI (4-4-2): Darlow; Dummett (Fraser 79), Clark, Fernández (Hayden 45), Yedlin; Ritchie, Shelvey, S Longstaff, Almirón; Joelinton (Gayle 75), C Wilson.

Fulham XI (4-2-3-1): Areola; A Robinson, Andersen, Adarabioyo, Aina; Zambo Anguissa, Lemina; Lookman (Bryan 90+4), Cairney (Hector 64), Cavaleiro; Mitrović (Loftus-Cheek 76).

Keep FT and do Vardy Grealish/DCL to Kane Someone before GW16?

Building towards DGW19 also, FH BGW18.

    Martinez
    Robo/Chilwell/Dallas
    Salah(c)/Bruno/Son/Grealish
    Vardy/DCL/Bamford

Both have good fixtures until gw18. Kane marginally better, obviously.

You must already be fairly well set up for the dgw if you can afford to use 2tf moving vardy out for kane and then back again.

Anyone else without WC thinking about fielding 7-8 players in GW18, with spurs and city players and then using TC in 19?

TC could work well for those without WC. Salah looks tempting.

Depends on those 7-8 players tbh. I tried getting something like this to work but was going to be too compromised on what I wanted on either 18 or 19. Just going to FH for the blank instead.

Am also looking at same, but main problem is shoehorning KDB in while retaining players I want - simply can't be done with lowish TV. Alternative is to do KDBSalah/Fernandes hokey cokey, but that means using two extra transfers plus TV loss

Nice find - but I will still be at loss what to do!

If you are "all-in" building up for GW19, it makes sense to BB 19 and consequently FH 18. If you fail to build the bench to full DGW capacity (e.g. injuries), TC 19 is the fallback option.

You can do it the other way around: build XI for 18, then FH 19 to get 11 DGW players. This allows you to save TC for a mini DGW.

Having only 7-8 players GW 18 when everyone else has FH 11 or fully built 11 will probably cost you roughly 15 points. Having 7-8 players GW 19 with TC when everyone else is BB or FH 11 DGW players will probably cost you roughly 25 points.

Seems like no matter what your strategy is, getting at least 9-11 DGW players for GW19 and consequently using the FH here to achieve this is the most sensible option.

          1. Pompel
            • 12 Years
            5 years, 3 months ago

Fair assessments that. There are downsides with all strategies, especially with no WC and lowish TV. It is probably still most sensible for me to go FH18/BB19. Main drawback is that my squad is may already be decimated with James and Vardy both doubts, and crap bench, so may not have enough FTs. But otoh building for GW18 and then FH19 means losing at least Fernandes, and then having to decide whether to keep KDB from GW20 or swap back to Fernadnes with TV loss.

Yoour estimates on relative loss for GW18 seems reasonable, but I think the DGW loss by going TC over FH/BB is less when also factoring in prior and later GWs

            1. Karhumies
              • 13 Years
              5 years, 3 months ago

You also have the option to build for GW18, then WC2 11 players for GW19 to get a long term team. The downside of this strategy is when to use the BB with the WC gone.

TC GW options there will be plenty in the future with mini DGWs. Remember all the skipped matches back from GW1?

            2. Karhumies
              • 13 Years
              5 years, 3 months ago

I was estimating in the BB 19 vs BB somewhere later in the season and TC 19 vs TC in mini DGW later as well. GW19 is the best BB GW whole season because we have time to build up to it without WC.

FH18 allows you to gamble. When you have a low scoring match, you can do a defensive double up or triple up which is sensible only with the FH. Something like Darlow, Lewis, Tierney, Holding with triple MCity offense or even Aubameyang C. It's going to be a low scoring GW, so a differential gambling strategy has a high ceiling with relatively low risk in case everything fails, crashes and burns.

          1. DARK SIDE OF THE LOON
            • 9 Years

Triple defense can all come down to a 6 point return. I would rather use my FH in a DGW where almost all the players have a second chance. My plan for the BGW is to have at least 7 players with Spurs and City covered. Rest of the games could go either ways.

            1. Karhumies
              • 13 Years
              5 years, 3 months ago

True. I am worried that we will have only 2-3 mini DGWs later instead of getting a big one. Therefore, I am maximizing my BB score now and gambling with my FH. If we do get a second big GW and if my FH gamble fails, then everyone who has saved their FH will have a huge advantage.

I guess around GW24 we will hear about the DGW26 news, which would be the other big DGW this season? But top teams might miss that and only get mini DGWs?

      • 13 Years

I intend to do that and BB in DGW19. That way I'd get a steal on rivals who FH or WC that GW. I think putting out 4 extra players beats punting on 33% extra points for one player.

      1. Pompel
        • 12 Years

To me, punitng on Salah in those tow mathes is low risk. I would epect using BB only gains you 10-15 pts extra, all things considered

For me, spunking so many chips in one go is a waste. The specific fixtures in BGW18 are a trap. My squad is fine for now, with 2 transfers setting up nicely for a BB in GW19 and decent squad for GWs thereafter. I think it better to simply sacrifice BGW18 and put out just 6 or 7 players

Can't get your head around what?

"If you have all you chips then the obvious* strategy is:
          WC - GW16
          FH - GW18
          BB - GW19

*(this might not be an obvious strategy if GW1/11 Blanks move to GW18/19)"

    What's template plan for 18/19.

I don't think you can get enough in for 18 and still have a decent DGW team for 19.

No way am I doing FH in 18 and BB in 19. I would have to sell more valuable players to afford a second goalkeeper and spend money to replace Mitchell and Brewster as well. Then this extra value is stuck on the bench until you use your second WC, which might be late on.

    Morning all,

What would you do if 6 of your starting 11 + Brewster and Bissouma are playing in GW18? Try build a squad to play gameweek 18 and free hit 19? Or try transfer to get gw19 players and free hit gw18?

The 6 players I am at the minute is Martinez - Lamptey - Dias - KDB - Neto - Kane.

The rest of my XI is Salah Bruno Chilwell Bamford Dallas.

    Thoughts appreciated!

Is there some way of planning trabsfers for both? So you currently have about 8 players for gw18...that'll do. Then save for FTs that week so you have 2FTs for gw19? Try and plan that im and see what happens. May mean the bench boost isn't full og 15dgwers, but might also save you having to wildcard afterwards....

Think it's far easier to build for GW19 with players you actually want post GW19 than build a horrible team just for GW18.

GW18 contains some horrible fixtures and I think it'll set you back in the long run or until you use your second WC.

Danny Ings owners. What are we doing? It's unlikely he'll be fit for the next game?

While I have 2FT and no pressing concerns, considering doing a side way move to Che Adams. Would free up the funds to do Grealish to Son, the week after. Good move?

I wouldn't want to miss the opportunity of having a forward playing Fulham.

      Just sayin'...

    Worth a -4?
    Rashford> Salah
Gross > Klich/Raphina (have exact money for Klich now!)

Defence is dogshit but will deal with at later stage

As someone without a chess grandmasters IQ, I'm happy to offload the freehit and bench boost chips by gw 19 to refocus on my core 11 players for the run to the finish. Need a ranking boost for morale also!

Sometimes the obvious looking thing is the right thing.

I have a tendency to save all my chips till the last few weeks, and often wish I'd played them earlier.

I'm like Trump, need the more instant gratification! Main thing for me is having a plan, which helps guide me. Planning for dgw 19 should help me cut out the silly rage transfers.

Is it too dangerous to go without Son and Kane?

Not at all. I'd like Son for GW17 though.

In the midst of a global pandemic, it's probably not the most dangerous thing.

Spurs looking blunter by the week.

This GW it's been great without them and big green arrow for me but I guess I should do KDB to son soon. But this week I am ofcourse keeping KDB

I have kane only. Might double up depending how it goes.

I'm a spurs fan and yesterday's performance wallowing in self pity following liverpool defeat was all too predictable

Looking at the key fixtures in the BGW.

    Sheffield United vs Newcastle
Wilson + 1 defender. Newcastle should win but I wouldn't rule out Sheff Utd putting in a spirited performance.

    Wolves vs Everton
One defender and DCL? Both sides solid defensively, can see this one being low scoring.

    City vs Brighton
KDB + Dias + 3rd City punt. You would expect City to keep a CS and win by 2~ goals, a thrashing is unlikely considering City's previous form.

    Villa vs Spurs
Kane + Son very important for this fixture, other options like Dier, Grealish are nice too. Spurs should win this but Villa aren't to be underestimated.

    Arsenal vs Palace
Probably only a match for FHers, I like Zaha a lot for this fixture. Otherwise no standout options, this should be low scoring considering the teams involved.

All in all, it's not a very appealing look on paper but I'm sure we'll see unexpected hauls. Thoughts?

    1. Still a few weeks before these games, form will change a lot.

Definitely, just that IMO analysing the week early helps you determine chip strategy with the key assets one may or may not have. If I didn't have 2 of Kane/Son/KDB, the merit to FH would greatly increase.

I agree with your assessments, which is why I'm not investing any chips or transfers in that GW. I have 2 City, those 2 Spuds and 3 Villains already, whom I'll utilise in GW19, so I'll just take the losses.

Spurs and City assets the key as expect them to score well. I'll freehit in the most template assets and take a decent green arrow. Hard to know who to captain, suppose Kdb a safe pick.

          Free hit in GW 19

WC followed by BB in a DGW
          TC in another DGW

There's not going to be another DGW though, not as big as this one I think?

I think I'm just gonna go with FH BGW18 which then gives me my original team which will have 8 or 9 DGW players for DGW19, and then use my BB or TC.

See how I feel nearer the time as a lot could happen between now and then...

So what's the problem in it? I guess if I FH in Gw 19 I might be able to field better X1 which could work better as things might be different when GW 19 arrives. I mean if I start preparing for 19 now and may be my playing X1 has injuries or rotation risk players it could backfire

Not a bad thing at all. You will have good players. You can put out a good GW18 team without getting rid of Salah and Bruno

Definitely FH in GW 19. I would like to use WC and BB in successive GWs. I am sure this opportunity will come later in the season.
GW 18 is not worth any chip.

    Tough season.

Toyed all week, got Kane instead of Bruno and sold vardy.

    Outside the top 1M again.

Does KDB need to go? Bruno, Salah, Kane/Son more consistent it seems, and more reliable for big scores.

If You Have Both Mahrez and KDB would you ditch them among this GW to get DGW players for GW19 or Keep
