Burnley 2-1 Wolverhampton Wanderers

  • Goals: Ashley Barnes (£6.0m), Chris Wood (£6.2m) | Fabio Silva (£5.2m)
  • Assists: Charlie Taylor (£4.5m)
  • Bonus: Wood x3, Barnes x2, Silva x1

Burnley stretched their unbeaten run to four on Monday night as they defeated Wolverhampton Wanderers at Turf Moor.

The Clarets’ defence once again caught the eye from a Fantasy perspective, albeit without a keeping a clean sheet this time as Fabio Silva‘s (£5.2m) consolation penalty deprived them of a fifth shut-out in the space of seven Gameweeks.

The previously goal-shy Ashley Barnes (£6.0m) and Chris Wood (£6.2m) were reunited in attack and did the damage with close-range finishes either side of half-time.

ALL ABOUT MEE

.

When they are in a rhythm and can call upon their first-choice centre-halves and goalkeeper, there aren’t many teams who look like a more stable defensive unit than Burnley.

The start of the season saw the Clarets having to call upon back-up stoppers Jimmy Dunne (£3.9m) and Kevin Long (£4.4m) as an injury crisis mounted and it was no surprise that they shipped eight goals in the first three Gameweeks.

Since the return to fitness of James Tarkowski (£5.3m) and Ben Mee (£4.9m), things have taken a turn for the better.

In the six matches that those two centre-backs and Nick Pope (£5.4m) have played together this season, Burnley have kept four clean sheets and conceded only twice.

Yes, they are capable of being spanked by the better teams – but that was always the case, as witnessed by the string of 5-0 defeats at the Etihad over the years.

But we aren’t likely to want to field Burnley defenders in our Fantasy teams in those games anyway and the burning question for these budget assets is how likely are they to register shut-outs in the more winnable fixtures.

The answer is ‘very’: Pope kept 13 clean sheets in 20 matches against the bottom-half teams last season. His record is similarly impressive in 2020/21, with five clean sheets in seven games against clubs now sitting ninth or below.

Were it not for a clumsy late foul on Silva by rookie substitute Josh Benson (£4.5m), then Burnley would have been looking at another clean sheet and Pope would be sat atop the FPL goalkeepers’ points table.

Sean Dyche’s side completely nullified players who had turned Chelsea over just last week, with the only two saves that Pope had to make coming from long-range efforts.

TAYLOR’S SWIFT RISE

With Mee and Tarkowski costing that bit extra, Charlie Taylor (£4.5m) has become the go-to budget route into the Burnley backline.

The left-back chipped in with his second assist of the season for Barnes’ opener, getting to the byline and producing a teasing cross for the striker to nod in from inside Wolves’ six-yard box.

Taylor is now the leading points scorer among FPL defenders priced at £4.5m or less.

The prospects for further clean sheets look positive in the next three Gameweeks, particularly the two matches in Lancashire either side of New Year.

The issue is what happens after that. Without a fixture in Blank Gameweek 18, their double-header in Double Gameweek 19 is unappealing and they won’t be top of many managers’ shopping lists for either.

SILVA LINING

Raul Jimenez‘s (£8.2m) head injury raised the possibility of a £5.2m-rated forward leading the line for Wolves over Christmas and New Year but Nuno Espirito Santo has understandably still been careful in placing too much weight on an 18-year-old striker’s shoulders.

In only two of the four matches that Jimenez has missed has Fabio Silva led the line and he was again benched on Monday, with Pedro Neto (£5.9m) and Daniel Podence (£5.5m) tasked with providing the goal threat from kick-off – with little joy.

We don’t even know where Silva stands in the penalty-taking pecking order when he does take to the field as both Jimenez and his understudy, Ruben Neves (£5.2m), were off the pitch when the teenage forward netted confidently past Pope from 12 yards.

MAX OUT?

Max Kilman (£4.2m) returned to the Wolves starting XI after a four-game absence but it’s still too early to say whether he’ll nail down a starting role again.

While the switch back to a wing-back system does open up an extra spot at centre-half, Kilman might not have even started had Willy Boly (£5.4m) – who was an unused substitute on Monday – not been an injury doubt ahead of the match.

Similarly, Owen Otasowie (£4.5m) – curiously playing in an advanced midfield role – would likely not have featured had Leander Dendoncker (£4.8m) been fit.

It remains to be seen how quickly the Belgian will recover but his absence in the middle of the park was keenly felt.

The Athletic’s Wolves correspondent, Tim Spiers, made a similar point, also highlighting Boly’s tail-off in form; it’s no surprise that the clean sheets have dried up as his own performance levels have dropped.

Burnley XI (4-4-2): Pope; Lowton, Tarkowski, Mee, Taylor; Brady (Pieters 69), Brownhill, Westwood, McNeil (Benson 87); Wood, Barnes (Rodriguez 82).

Wolves XI (3-4-3): Patricio; Kilman, Coady, Saiss; Semedo, Neves (Vitinha 76), Moutinho, Ait-Nouri (Traore 60′); Podence, Neto, Otasowie (Silva 60).

Is there a bias here? Wood last four games xg is more than double Adams. Wood has sheff Utd, Leeds and Fulham next three

i think any 'bias' is that no-one trusts burnley to score goals, even if stats show otherwise

I would be interested to know how players who plan to Bench Boost in GW19 are preparing for a potential post chip blues.

I mean, in the process of assessing the pros and cons of playing chips during the BGW18 and DGW19 , I am quite surprised not to read more about how to handle a bench boosted GW19 team from GW20 onwards.

I actually see quite a lot of cons in the BB19 strategy approach:

    - the first one is the time space there is between the moment you pick up your squad (WC16) or start the process of picking up your BB19 squad through free transfers. In a season where there is a lot of un-expected events due to COVID, and in a period where there is a high congestion of games so probably more injuries it seems quite adventurous to me to decide now if for instance Vardy has to be brought in only for the BB19 matter. A lot can happen by then. Over the last years, we were used to a very straightforward WC and BB strategy from one GW to the following one but it is not the case this time.

    - aren't we ONCE AGAIN over-expecting from the BB? Clearly, there's a strong argument this year for a BB on GW19 because of the turnaround time between fixtures and what's at stakes for the teams. All teams will go full throttle and Bench Boosters will be safe from rotation (bar City obvisouly..). But what's the average point a bench boost generally bring? +- 20 points?
By bringing a DGWeeker from now, you have to ask yourself if his course over the GW15-GW19 will outscore the course of a Single GWeeker over the same period.

    - and.. after? Bench Boosting in DGW19 mean you will probably focus on bringing players from 5 or 6 teams only. This means that these players should have great fixtures ALSO from GW20 onwards or that, having "all of your eggs in the same basket" you are relying a lot on those teams to perform. You are also more prone to being heavily affected by potential game cancellation or postponements.

It also means that your budget will have been spread among 15 players to maximise your bench boost. Great strategy, but this also mean that your team will need a lot of surgery (-4, -8, 2nd WC?) if you want to bring the big hitters. You generally could afford this strategy the past years when we were wildcarding on +- GW32 and BB the week after because we could afford to have "dead wood" in our squad because there was only a few GW left to play and end of season rotation could somehow endorse some more funky picks. But we are now talking about BB19 not BB34 which makes quite a difference in my opinion.

My point is, in the process of assessing the pros of a BBDGW19, I always end up with something very wrong with my team in GW20 which screams hits or WC to me very soon afterwards and I don't really like that prospect. One viable strategy though would be to brace ourselves until GW25 and a potential WC for a big DGW26 and hope for the best between 20 and 25. But are we sure the edge we get with BBDGW19 will be better than the inertia of lost points between 20 and 25 ?

    what do you think?

it's hard to answer this question as no-one really knows but one thing for sure is taht there will be more opportunities.

The way I rather look into this is, right now, focusing on only BB GW19 seem to bring too much of a damage to my team and team structure (I don't have my first WC) and I know how disappointing a BB can be.

Of course if you don't have the first WC the picture changes. Im not going to even try and advise as I have mine. There are many without though and sure there is many a discussion to follow . GL

I agree. I think BB could actually be a trap this year. Of course I'll activate it by the end of the season as every single point counts but I think it is not totally crazy to consider the game without it.

Yeah probably best to activate it 😛 i agree with ur points. Trying to change ur whole team to acommodate a BB just ends in losing points by the time u get to the BB. And then even more can be lost by a bench using up all the value.

Long post , read a little. But yeah of course there are never certainties. . My take on this strategy is I lose the BB early and no worries trying to "manipulate " team for a later BB. And the cheapies for the BB GW 19 have some pretty decent fixtures 21 through to gw 24 by which time you should have more info to plan your 2nd WC

Probs 14 DGWs maybe 13 only trying to get best players from 16 through to around gw 24 that have doubles in 19 besides Harry and Son . Lose one of them for 19 likely

that's the advantage of the FH, I don't have to work on my draft right now as I believe my today's draft won't be relevant with GW19. For instance, Werner is out of the mix at the moment. But Werner could very probably be the player to have in your team for GW19.

Also, it is not totally impossible City have a double in 19 so wait and see that's the big + with the FH

yep, but I'm not too much worried heading into GW18 with 7 or 8 players. I have noticed that 10 times out of 14 ths year, 4 of my players have returned a total of 6 points or less during a GW

    5. Mweene

I'll basically have my normal team but with Fabianski, Dallas, Coufal, Raphinha/Soucek on the bench with BB.

West Ham and Leeds have cheap options you could keep on your bench anyway going forwards, they're both decent sides and have 2 great fixtures.

      Seems perfect to me.

Set up in GW19 for a mix of DGW focus (the less punty doublers) and GW20 (the more obvious SGWers) + and we should be fine.

The fact of this DGW is we know who is playing and when it will be, and this cannot be said with 100% accuracy of any future DGW. Smaller DGWs are better suited to triple captain anyway

I replaced Jota with Mahrez, blank, and then replaced Mahrez with Rashford, 2 points
You got 6 points more and saved a transfer having Pulisic

Looks good to me, although I'd be planning to remove Grealish next week. Maybe Bowen and Ings over Grealish and Adams?

Those suggested transfers look very sideways to me. Do Bowen + Ings offer more upside than Grealish + Adams? I'm really not sure and i feel 2 transfers can be spent better

If James is confirmed out I've got 5.5 to spend on a defender. Best option?

    A) Matip
    B) Cancelo (have Dias)
    C) Coufal (have Balbuena)
    D) Dallas (DGW)

I'm actually thinking Matip could be great over the short term if he stays fit.

D , You don't want Matip for a DGW you need TAA or Robbo

Would ideally have one of them. I'm thinking next week or so Grealish probably becomes Soucek to fund Robertson

Lets get answers on this one - Anyone that still has their first WC to play gw (16 likely) - Do you have any other strategy besides FH 18 and BB 19 ?

And if so really interested to hear the logic

Still deciding... but have you looked at:
      - FH 18 and TC 19
      - FH 18 only
      - FH 19 only

Would look at those options without first WC but does'nt make sense to me if you have

What to do Witherspoon Chilwell? Currently playing Cancelo, Dallas and Balbuena. Two of them are in risk of not playing. Thinking about Chilwell -> Matip

I reckon all 3 will start so if you really want to keep Chilwell I'd probably just bench and hope he returns next week.

He needs a scan. So my guess is two gameweeks at a minimum

Plenty long enough I'd imagine with 3 games coming up very quickly.

In terms of gws missed probably the next 3 at least. Hopefully will be back by gw19. But there's always the chance the injury isn't bad and he's fine in a few days.

Scored yesterday and was a decent option last year. Seems a better option than Rodrigo and is less owned

Welbeck also scored on Sunday. Cheaper option than Rodrigo and is less owned.

thinking on fh gw18 and bb/tc gw19. wondering if it is too much of a risk to leave son, kane and also martinez in the dgw?..
have 2ft and 0,4m itb. have used 1st WC..

    martinez (martin)
    james coufal kwp (taylor mitchell)
    salah bruno son grealish (bissouma)
    bamford kane dcl

what moves do you lads think i could do here? rather lose kane or dcl or both?
    a) dcl+mitchell -> adams+dallas
    b) kane+mitchell -> adams+robbo
    later on: grealish+bissouma+martin -> soucek?+raphinha?+fabianski
    Cheers!

Best cheap (under 5m) defender for the next 3 + double in 19? Already got West Ham and Southampton assets in play

    A. Taylor
    B. Justin
    C. Dallas
    D. Someone else

Have 2FT and defence is mess.
    Lamptey* chilwell* Mitchell* Robbo Justin

Planning to BB gw 19 and possible targets are Taylor, Coufal, Dallas.
    But who remove first?!

      Martinez
      Dier Coufal Dallas KWP
Salah (C) KDB (V) Bruno Son Grealish
      Bamford
      4.0 Wilson Lamptey Brewster
      1 FT 1.6 ITB

Planning to roll 1FT and do KDB+Brewster> Kane+Bowen next week.
