Wolves 0-1 Liverpool

  • Goals: Diogo Jota (£6.6m)
  • Assists: Sadio Mané (£11.8m)
  • Bonus points: Trent Alexander-Arnold x3 (£7.3m), Alisson x2 (£5.9m), Ozan Kabak x1 (£5.0m)

JOT THAT DOWN

Diogo Jota (£6.6m) is already proving he can offer Fantasy Premier League again after he scored in Liverpool’s Gameweek 28 trip to Molineux.

His first-half effort was his fifth goal across his last 10 Premier League appearances for the Reds, more than any colleague across theirs.

During the same run, Mohamed Salah (£12.4m) has found the net four times while Sadio Mané (£11.8m) and Roberto Firmino (£9.1m) combine for two.

A recent injury to the latter has arguably helped Jota’s fortunes in the last two matches, the former Wolves man playing each of those two as the central figure of Liverpool’s front three, with Salah and Mané on either side.

It is worth adding that a prolonged wait between the Reds’ Monday-night trip to Wolves and a Gameweek 30 visit to Arsenal is likely to be long enough for Firmino to recover from his current knock – so keeping an eye on his fitness could be important for anyone considering Jota.

While he does not have a fixture in Blank Gameweek 29, he is sure to be on the Fantasy radar considering the nature of Liverpool’s fixtures after the international break.

Between Gameweeks 30 and 38, only Wolves are ahead of Jurgen Klopp’s men for attacking potential on the Fantasy Football Scout Season Ticker.

Aston Villa, Newcastle, Southampton and Crystal Palace are due to visit Anfield while Liverpool face trips to Arsenal, Leeds, Manchester United and Burnley.

Meanwhile, Liverpool have now lost six in a row at Anfield but their recent away form is still worth noting.

They have won four of their last five road trips, particularly encouraging considering three of their next five Premier League matches are away from Anfield.

F-A-B

Against Wolves, Klopp was finally able to field Fabinho (£5.4m) in midfield after extensive time at centre-back this season.

As was the case against RB Leipzig in the Champions League, the Liverpool manager trusted Ozan Kabak (£5.0m) and Nathaniel Phillips (£4.0m) at centre-back, a pairing that has now kept two clean sheets from a possible two.

Virgil van Dijk (£6.2m), Joe Gomez (£5.2m) and Joel Matip (£5.4m) remain long-term absentees for Liverpool so, if Fabinho can continue to add a stabling influence from midfield, and help keep them in possession, Fantasy managers could consider the two budget centre-backs for those aforementioned appealing fixtures.

“Fabinho (in midfield) gives us a lot of things. Pretty much everything you saw in the Champions League game. In the one-one-on situations, organising-wise without talking a lot but being there in the right spaces and giving other players the opportunity to be slightly higher, slightly wider, all this kind of things. When we all press together, he wins decisive challenges as well.” – Jurgen Klopp

Fabinho’s return to midfield also allowed Liverpool to display signs of their former selves going forward.

While the Reds have looked devoid of ideas on more than one occasion in 2021, they showed some promising sparks at Molineux even in an admittedly cagey affair.

In the 12th minute, Mané managed to get in behind the Wolves defence and go one-on-one with Rui Patrício (£5.3m). He took it around the goalkeeper pulling himself a bit too far wide but it was encouraging to see Liverpool try to make use of space on the shoulder of centre-backs again.

In the 37th minute, Liverpool played a ball up to Salah on the right-hand side, who tucked the ball into Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.3m). His first-time cross was almost psychically read by Mané who connected with a diving header that only just drifted around the outside of Patrício’s post.

And Liverpool’s opening goal was also indicative of the danger on offer in Liverpool’s front three. Salah squared to Mané who poked it onto Jota for a fierce shot onto the inside of Patrício’s side-netting.

Liverpool were less dangerous in the second half but their recent form might perhaps forgive their desire to close out the win rather than overstretch themselves for a second goal.

Salah probably had their best chance of the second period after he went through on goal and forced Patrício to save low from a wide-angle.

He also converted from an Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (£6.3m) pass in the 86th minute only to see it correctly ruled out for offside.

SOLVING THE COAD

Despite scoring only two points against Liverpool, Conor Coady (£4.8m) continued to display his Fantasy potential.

He had one of Wolves’ best chances to score on Monday night, heading a Romain Saïss (£4.9m) cross over the bar in the 48th minute.

As previously documented, Coady has recently discovered a newfound penalty-box presence from set pieces that indicates he can be a viable FPL asset for the remainder of the campaign.

In the four matches prior to Gameweek 28, Coady registered two big chances, the second-highest total among defenders over the same period.

Furthermore, as mentioned earlier in this article, Wolves have appealing fixtures between now and the end of the campaign.

When sorting the Fantasy Football Scout Season Ticker for defensive potential between Gameweeks 30 and 38, Nuno Espirito Santo’s men rank third.

Particular highlights during that run include trips to Fulham and West Bromwich Albion while low-scoring Sheffield United and Burnley come to Molineux in Gameweeks 31 and 32 respectively.

Coady is, of course, the most nailed-on option in Wolves’ trio of centre-backs, Willy Boly‘s (£5.4m) return to the side ending Leander Dendoncker‘s (£4.6m) run of six successive Premier League starts.

Still, it is worth keeping an eye on Wolves’ ability to keep clean sheets before investing in that run. They have recorded three shut-outs in their last seven league outings and now face the possibility of a long-term absence for Patrício.

An unfortunate collision with Coady in the closing stages of Monday’s game left the goalkeeper with a head injury that required extensive treatment on the pitch. Budget option John Ruddy (£4.3m) was his replacement.

“We just have an update now. He’s okay. He’s conscious. He remembers what happened, he’s aware. The doctor says he’s okay. It was a collision with Coady, the knee of Coady on the head. He can speak already, he’s okay. All these situations when it’s a concussion in the head gets all of us worried He’s going to recover so everything’s okay.” – Nuno Espirito Santo

Wolverhampton Wanderers XI (3-4-3): Patrício; Saïss, Coady, Boly; Jonny, Moutinho, Neves (Dendoncker 75’0, Semedo (Gibbs-White 84′); Neto, Willian J (F Silva 70′), A Traoré.

Liverpool XI (4-3-3): Alisson; Robertson, Kabak, N Phillips, Alexander-Arnold; Thiago (Keïta 67′), Wijnaldum (Milner 67′), Fabinho; Mané, Jota (Oxlade-Chamberlain 81′), Salah.

Built this team for BGW29, BB30 & WC31. With the injuries and 3 Villa defense against Spurs, should I FH29 instead of BGW33? Anyone else WC'ing in 31 have worked out a team that covers 33 nicely?

    Martinez
    Konsa, Struijk, Targett
Son*, Raphinha, (another mid in place of Salah with a FT)
    Kane, Bamford*

Forster, Stones, Lowton, Salah, Gundo, Bruno, DCL

I have quite a high team value (but terrible rank, so need to make it count to climb) and was originally going to WC31 FH33 (also have TC). The standard strategy would be to pump all the money into the first 11 and go with a light bench for the run-in. But after last night's performance I don't think Salah is worth it, maybe just Jota, which gives me a lot of spare cash and on the face of it makes all the (many unnecesary) hits I've taken to build value seem a waste.

However I'm thinking that this may not be such a bad thing as despite going for nailed players the starred (*) players below could still be subject to rotation so solid bench cover would be handy; it would also allow me to negotiate GW33 without a FH which could be useful for any surprise fixture adjustments in the last few games. The alternative is to include Salah instead of Jota in the below and play 5-3-2 with a light bench (Rice, Burke/Bissouma, Brewster)

    Mendy
    Azpi Dias* Cresswell Rudiger*
    KDB* Bruno Jota*
    Vardy Kane Antonio

3.9 Saka/Neto Coady Rice 0.7 ITB (price changes likely to erode this between now and 31)

    Any input appreciated.

I don't think that Vardy is worth it - in fact Iheanacho might be better off.
I like the idea of lots of value in the defense - think TAA/Robbo might be a good differential too.

Rice doesn't make any sense to me. (Am a WHU fan and I love him but not for fantasy).

I'm struggling to spend the money and think most in the higher ranks won't go with Vardy so a decent differential (fixtures are sublime 32-35, Maddi likely back by then and Leicester with everything to play for). Yeah Rice is not brilliant but he's on penalties and think he's the best pick around the 4.5 bracket (he'd be 3rd sub anyway).

Yeah, this has burned me before. I went for Werner over Antonio in the first big DGW, trying to be clever. Cost me 20+ points.

Fair enough. My thoughts with the Lei fixtures are Iheanacho as my 8th attacker - going with Vardy as nailed is smart too if you got the money.
You're right at least Rice will get 90 minutes every week too.

Think it'll be super interesting to see what happens with teams down the stretch. I've been steadily climbing (up to 1,403 now) - it's been easy enough to play low risk with 1-2 diffs up to now - it could get wild down the end.

Incredible rank, well done! I've had a mare this season so best hope is perhaps 100k if I nail the WC (I don't dare check the points difference, but I live in hope). Yeah, WC31 is going to be an exciting shake up.

  6. Is it crazy to get Martinez+Mendy/Leno for GW31 WC?

Martinez has 3 games where I fear he can haul
Palace,West Brom and DGW mostly in 37

Mendy,Leno have bad fixtures that week so they will rotate perfectly... makes sense?

    1. Phil's Stamps
      • 15 Years

I think if you're keeping one second keeper on a WC, because of the reasons you said Martinez is the one (assuming it doesn't block any important upgrades in your first 11).

I'm thinking Martinez & Leno myself.

Plenty of value elsewhere and between the two of them they balance out really well.
I got Martinez when he was cheap so not like i'm missing much value in it.

No, I wouldn't take the hit. Son is probably out but if he does make a miraculous recovery (as he did earlier in the season), it will be a sickener (especially as he has a great fixture in 30).

      i like this question.
wild that sterlo didn't even make the squad.
i still think B, mainly because he's not first choice so more likely to get PL games down the stretch while Aguero might be used in CL/Cups.

Great - thanks for the thoughtful reply. It's so hard to get inside Pep's brain. Will Aguero even be 1st choice? It Sterling being given some sort of break before the hard run-in? Who knows.

I think maybe Aguero comes on as a change of pace/strategy against different teams. Whereas Sterling doesn't even seem to fit any of their strategies right now. All could change next gw though. lol

I think he is not mentally prepared to play for LIV anymore, he is seeking a move away from them.
He just taking wild shots which shows in his dipping conversion rate.
Yes, he is getting those penalty box touches, but not producing the goals.
I think I'll sell him, but the lack of a proper premium is making it hard to pick.

Fully expecting him to get nothing in upcoming GWs. Just keeping for the sake of it, missing out his jammy hauls in first half of the season was annoying.

Considering these options for the other FT or hits.
    Son> Odegaard or Lingard.
    Bamford-> Antonio.
    Burn- Veltman.

So currently you have 5-6 max as Burn and Son looks like hamstring issues and out for the short term.

I do think that Bamford might just start, but if Bielsa rules him out the move to Antonio might make sense.

I'm considering Gundo to Trossard atm tbh. Would wait out for EL to see whether Odegaard starts. He Auba and ESR are competing for 2 starts.

Do I FH, stand or make two changes?

    Martinez
Struijk, Cresswell, Konsa || Cancelo, Dias
Soucek, Lingard, Son || Gundo, Bruno
    Kane (c) || Vardy, DCL

I'm thinking Gundo & Vardy > Raphina & Bamford (free) leaves 5.2M in the bank. Without the transfer I'm playing 8, with it I can field 10.

Make 2 transfers. Honestly speaking Son would highly likely be out. So thats 7. Having 9 would be good enough. I would do Gundo & Vardy -> Raphinha and Watkins / Maja unless Bamford is passed fit

It's just that when I visited UK i couldn't visit Elland Road so I got to watch my first ever game at Upton Park instead. So a soft spot there

Anyone looking at tierney? Decent fixtures but doesn’t seem to quite have the stats of other wingbacks.

Outside the top ten for CC, outside the top twenty for shots and maybe 30-40 for xgi. Last four games

I think there’s a big delusion of accuracy/analysis with these stats tbh not just with Tierney but in general

Specifically on Tierney - He has 6 CC... the second best defender has 8 CC - does 2 CC over 4 arbitrary games really make any difference?

Same with shots... he’s on 4... 2 more would have him 4th in this 4 game comparison period (where all players have had different fixtures)

An extra 0.5 XGi over 4 games would have him towards the top of things - those all seem very marginal

The games were Man City, Burnley, Leicester, spurs - no other team had those 4 fixtures at those times either etc - so no real consistency of measurement

            100% with you here

Think it especially applies to attacking returns for defenders myself: typically they fall irregularly and can distort the picture when someone has a sudden glut or slight drought.

Case in point right now is Stones. He's been a good pick for a while but suddenly he looks an unmissable pick. That's on the back of 4 goals in a short space. This is highly reminiscent of Laporte a while ago. But the pattern of these reruns aren't comparable to TAA Robbo Alonso or Cresswell of this season who pop up regularly.

I'd also put the Veltman care down to a sudden rise up the statistical rankings based on stats in one match alone. A 3rd of all his attacking stats in the season came against Palace.

      Dunno

Digne to Dallas yes if you have WC to reverse in into Azpi or someone in 31. Son to Bale I doubt. I have both. Think we'd be unlucky to miss out on Son in GW30 and he's the one I'd want first for that one. Not keen on Bale when he doesn't have Son to do the donkey work on setting everything up.

For me it’s Jan 2021 that’s the turning point. 2.1m or so rank. All the way up to 450k now. Need to somehow get into top 100k before end of season.

Arsenal’s fixtures look brilliant except GW30 to the end of the season (and Liverpool is arguable at the moment). If Aubamyang can get to the game on time, he’s going to play most matches going forward isn’t he?

It’d also be great to get a set and forget Chelsea player in with their fixtures. Trying somehow to turn Werner into Rudiger or Azpi

I think it depends on whether Arsenal stay in the Europa League and whether Arteta prioritises that at the expense of the PL. But Auba is a quality player and can go big in games.

Team for GW29 GTG? Appreciate Son unlikely to play but I don’t want to take a hit (and want to keep him past 29).

    Kane Antonio Watkins

What to do with Sterling? It’s so frustrating to hold and when he doesn’t play he just eats up space. Is it worth a -4 to get him out for Bale or any other midfielder. Money no object considering he’s a premium mid.

    2 FTs

Is it a waste to do Shaw > Creswell given that Shaw has an appealing GW30 fixture? Other defenders are Dias, Stones, Dallas, Veltman.

With my other FT I'm thinking of doing Son > Bale depending on injury updates on Friday.

I would do Stones to Cresswell. Considering Stones plays alternate matches and Pep has said he will rotate as often as he wants, I am not planning on holding any Man City defense except Ederson or Dias.

    Sanchez
    Veltman, Dunk, Cresswell, Dallas
    Bale, Auba, Grealish, Lingard
    Kane, Antonio
    (Areola, Raph, Bamf, Tierney)

Need more villa and Fulham defence? Chasing in both ML’s so Grealish and triple Brighton defence seems a bit of a differential...
