Our new FPL Masterclass series unites three of the best Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers around: two-time India champion Lateriser, seven-time top 10k finisher Zophar and five-time top 1,000 finisher Tom Freeman.

Between them, they have 20 overall ranks in the top 10,000, nine of which were within the top 1k.

They’ll be chipping in with regular Fantasy advice ahead of the start of 2021/22, with opinion on everything from tips for newcomers to captaincy picks.

Our trio of top managers will be writing for Fantasy Football Scout every week throughout the new season – and only subscribers will be able to read all of their articles in full.

You can read all of their previous FPL Masterclass articles via the links above but this time we’ll be asking our panel: what do you focus more on – form or fixtures?

ZOPHAR SAID…

I am a ‘fixtures over form’ guy and I believe that a run of favourable matches often ‘creates’ form.

When a team/player encounters favourable opposition, they are afforded more opportunities to deliver points, which in turn leads to increased confidence and an upturn in form. This makes sense, as most sides often place greater emphasis on winning a fixture against, say, a Norwich City than they do a Manchester City. You would see more attacking set-ups from managers and players would also feel mentally that they are more likely to find the back of the net.

Very often, teams from the bottom half of the table rely solely on the ‘easy’ fixtures for their Premier League survival so we in turn as FPL managers need to target these games, too. I usually look for a block of five to six fixtures when I make my transfers.

However, I don’t think fixtures are as important for the premium assets, as they can deliver points usually against any opposition. My strategy with the premiums is usually to stick and forget, and ride out the tougher periods.

There are some instances, though, where form simply cannot be ignored. I did a piece for Scout last year where I tried to define ‘form’ and the likes of Kelechi Iheanacho (£7.5m) and Jesse Lingard (£7.0m) exemplified this in the tail-end of the campaign. Previously bit-part players, they had been afforded the chance to shine and circumstances led to them having an ideal state of mind to deliver a high level of performance which, though unsustainable over a long period, was ideal for FPL managers to capitalise on in the short term.

LATERISER SAID…

I am definitely a fixtures guy. I’ve always thought that fixtures breed form as premium assets from strong teams will more often than not tend to do well versus weaker opposition.

I’ve done many articles highlighting the same where the performance of premium assets versus strong, middling and obliging defenses is starkly different. You can see the same in the data here.

While selecting my team, I like getting premium assets even if they have a good fixture run for three to four Gameweeks, whereas my approach is a lot more long-term when it comes to mid-priced attackers and defenders. I generally see these mid-priced assets and defenders as long-term ‘value’-focused glue guys and I like to spend my transfers on attackers with a high upside.

Again, this is very subjective and depends on the context of the season (you can’t spend transfers on premium attackers if they are continuously performing at a very high level) and you’ll need to take a step back and assess.

Form, for me, is a little less predictable than fixtures but there is a case for trusting a player looking slightly more confident or avoiding a player who appears the opposite. On this note, one thing to look out for is whether there is a ‘role change’ for a player in a particular team. You need to keep an eye out for these tactical shifts and try jumping onto these players earlier than the crowd.

TOM SAID…

I’m all about the fixtures, especially for my budget and mid-price picks, and often find that form is driven by it.

Bad defences can suddenly become good defences if the fixtures fall kindly, which is exactly what happened with West Bromwich Albion for a period last season. The Baggies were terrible initially under Sam Allardyce, which coincided with a brutal schedule that included games against Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United, Leeds United and Arsenal. However, they improved shortly afterwards once the fixtures eased, keeping a respectable four clean sheets in seven matches. That’s something I benefitted from with Sam Johnstone and Ainsley Maitland-Niles (£5.5m) in my team but I was quick to sell once the fixtures stiffened again.

Despite that, sometimes you need to ride the wave with players like Jesse Lingard. The form isn’t necessarily sustainable and returns are bound to dry up eventually, but missing out on these types of players isn’t a lot of fun, and at the very least, you should make a few pounds from it.

With the premiums, I don’t mind playing them in trickier one-off fixtures, especially if they are on penalty-taking or set-piece duties. For example, Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) returned against Man City, Man Utd, Leicester City, Spurs and Arsenal last season, so there was never a reason to sell.

    "Fixtures breed form"

Spain defender Aymeric Laporte has made it clear to Manchester City that he wants to move to La Liga this summer, with Barcelona and Real Madrid keen to sign the 27-year-old.

Stones become more and more appealing!

Ake will get the occasional game no doubt, but between him and Stones, I think Stones should surely be the first choice to pair up with Dias.

I was sure Laporte would fancy ousting Stones from that spot but I guess not. Stones was already tempting before but if this happens it'll be harder not to go for him

        Actually, it's quite different.

Compared to the pure template of:

        Sanchez
        TAA Shaw Digne
        Salah Fernandes Raphinha Buendia
        Watkins Antonio Toney

It has quite a number of differences and is even structured differently. If this isn't a differential draft, I don't know what is!

I can’t see past a back line of:

    TAA, Robbo, Digne, Shaw

(Once Shaw is fit of course, I will have AWB until then)

It’s like having 4 midfielders in your team, all will decent clean sheet and assist potential. Maybe even the odd goal here or there.

Struggling to see how the mid priced midfielders will outscore any of them (Raph, Buendia, etc).

    Thoughts?

I agree to some extent. Although the fixtures favour Digne, new manager is always a threat and as you said about Shaw, may not be ready. I believe Buenida has the potienal to score 10-12 goals this year

i was thinking exactly the same however should you be comparing to mid price midfielders.

i have TAA, Digne, Shaw, Ayling & White

and am wondering whether to down grade Shaw to a £4.5m and spend the extra upgrading Jota to Havertz??

It's always the way that big at the back looks (and usually is) the best distribution of funds but it is very hard to stick with it all season and not be tempted to start pushing funds forward when mids and forwards start scoring and everyone is jumping on.

Something like this could de very well as a ghost team but I know I wouldn't have the patience to sit with all that money at the back all season.

          Sanchez (4.0)
          TAA Robbo Chilwell Stones Shaw
          Salah(c) Mahrez Raphinha(vc) (ESR - Brownhill)

Completely agree although i tried this last season and it failed miserably. Great options at 5.5 defenders, 6.5 mids and 7.5 forwards too

      Sanchez
      TAA Robbo Digne Shaw
      Salah Bruno Raphina
      Watkins Antonio Toney

for a ghost team 100% you are correct, however for an active FPL team if you tie up your budget in defence you are extremely restricted in your ability to jump onto bandwagons. this debate happens every time around this year.

I also cant find a fourth mid i like, Buendia, Mount, Gundog, Torres etc, prefer Robertson to all of them

      1. Dr. Rog
        • 16 Years
        4 years, 4 months ago

Jota, Greenwood, Torres all have much higher PP90 than Robertson.

if they are starting they are much better options - which is why its important to have those funds free to capture their mini runs in the team + form + fixtures.

my ghost team has 5 big defenders, but my active team will comfortably outscore the ghost team.

        1. The Legend Squad
          • 11 Years
          4 years, 4 months ago

Better PP90, but not guaranteed to get those 90s, so often end up underscoring the nailed defenders.

Which I guess is the point... being able to jump on the cheaper and explosive but more risky and mids and forwards is key. And why this strategy doesn’t work.

        • 16 Years
        4 years, 4 months ago

indeed. although it makes some sense to migrate into a stronger defence later on when the obscene value picks in midfield/forward places have emerged e.g. your muchu, adams, fellaini, fraser, mahrez, vardy, lundstrum, doherty, jiminez, dallas type players become apparent. there are always some every year - this year it could well be ESR but its better to be a few weeks too late than a whole season early!

        1. zes
          • 10 Years
          4 years, 4 months ago

tbh it's probably sound strategy to go 4 at the back from the beginning. The issue is it goes against the psychology of most players who'll want to be jumping on the attacking bandwagons which emerge. If you're patient, why not? I just know I don't have the steady hands to sit through two weeks of Robbo + TAA blanking without tearing up my team and putting the money up front.

    7. Rhinos
      • 12 Years

the biggest issue with big at the back is your bench. No attackers under 5.5m are any good whereas there's lots of decent 4.5m defenders plus some 4m ones for your 3rd bench spot if need the funds.

I really like the way tierney/reguillon rotate (and provide a solid bench player). Assuming you have a 4.5 defender as you fifth, it also saves 1.5 to upgrade elsewhere. Both are attacking as well and get as forward as robbo.

I’ve been settled on this team now for a while, like the rotations is allows me

    Meslier
    Trent Cancelo Coufal
    Salah Son Mahrez Buendia ESR
    Watkins Wilson

    Foster Ayling Veltman Oba

    - 0.5 allows me to jump on off likes of Mahrez, ESR and get a 3rd stricker even
    - Defenders rotate well

Think there's room for a strategy where you time them rather than hold though (only in theory of course!)

This is based on the view that cs are form and fixture driven and not consistent throughout the season. It's those cs that make them "must haves". When I've looked at cs over the past couple of seasons there are patterns (not invariable of course) of teams going on great runs and then relative barren spells. Optimal is to hold for the runs (which become quite predictable after the first couple of cs) and then move off to a form asset elsewhere either in midfield to defence. At some point midfielders such as Barnes will definitely outscore them - they don't need to do it all season long.

Put another way on this strategy you would have missed City last season and been stuck with the others who were all inconsistent.

How good is Leon Bailey the new Villa Player? Should he be someone to consider?

I wondered if there'd be any love for him from the off or a wait and see.

For me, definitely one to watch closely and think he could make a splash.

If Lukaku goes to Chelsea probably priced 10.5/11m going to cause a shake up to template developed since game launched - would he be in your team?

Kane's future being resolved will also force some changes potentially.

nah happy with Bruno and Salah. I could see myself getting him around GW8 with the fixture swing and after watching him a few times

Too late I suspect for any player from abroad to make a GW1 squad now - certainly touch and go. And lose that week 1 fixture and Chelsea won't be looking great.

Imagine that he'll have fairly minimal impact off the bat but be huge around fixture turn.

I'll hold Havertz to start with until he (or any other forward they sign if that breaks down) beds in, with getting a deal done, quarantine and getting up to speed in training and match ready it'll be a few weeks. But I think a lot of people forget how many good chances Chelsea forwards passed up last season so he'll definitely be going in. Even made a draft to see if I can fit someone around 11m in (using Vardy + 0.5itb as placeholder) alongside Kane or Salah and think it can work.

Nope don't rate him that highly, will flop like most of their other strikers

No, and Havertz would be out. I reckon Lukaku could do well enough, but I couldn't afford him and ane.

Not quite sure on the differing regulations - imagine it depends on where people are travelling from - but dubious I think given travel. Andersen at Palace took almost a week from signing to train with the squad after quarantine.

Guys, is this trying too hard to be different? My first draft.
The aim is to go really hard with Pool's first 2 fixtures then switch Mane to United/Son after.

    Sanchez, 4.0
    Dias, Shaw, Digne, Ayling, 4.0
    Salah, Mane, Jota, Buendia, 4.5
    DCL, Nacho, Watkins

    Ta

Yes I can understand. A Bruno haul in the first 2 gameweeks are going to be really painful for example.

As part of GW1 BB squad so need them to start GW1 and then GW2 onwards will have enough squad depth to ride out any rotation in City lineup.

    A) Gundogan and Cancelo
    B) Mahrez and Coufal

    1. Moderately content penguin

      B just

Think I'd rather back Mahrez over chance of Gundo being in KdB role AND killing it. See that call as a double punt right now.

Will Shaw start the season or is someone like Cancelo or Digne a better option ??
