Should I buy Ivan Toney in FPL? A Brentford fan’s perspective

Ivan Toney (£6.5m) is now the highest-owned forward in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), sitting in 30% of pre-Gameweek 1 squads at the time of writing.

But is the hype surrounding the 31-goal striker justified?

Having previously taken a more general, statistical overview of Brentford’s midfielders and forwards in our Promoted series, we wanted a fan’s perspective on the former Newcastle United and Peterborough United hitman.

We asked Fantasy Football Scout user and Brentford fan Jamie (aka Belisha Beacon) a few questions on what FPL managers can expect in 2021/22.

What is Toney’s playing style – could you liken him to any other forward in terms of physicality/pace/hold-up play etc?

“His speciality is finding the tiniest bit of space away from his marker and finishing first time (something that should hopefully bode well in the top flight, with chances likely to be at more of a premium), as well as being a taker of a string of very cool penalties.

“He’s a real team leader and surely a future captain. He is also invaluable when it comes to helping out in defence at set pieces; he certainly prevented a few goals each season for us and for Peterborough, which is not something you can say for every number 9!

“A striker talisman with the physical presence to win challenges at both ends… the top-knot Drogba?!”

Does he have any weaknesses to his game?

“There’s not much to report here on the evidence of last season. He picks up a few yellows for dissent; he gets fouled a lot but needs to control his temper in tough situations.

“He’s also a player who can seem to drift off the radar for spells in games but he has the patience to keep working for the team.”

Having seen the likes of Bamford, Mitrovic, Pukki etc in the last few years, where does he stand in the high-scoring pantheon of recent Championship strikers? Is 31 goals a fair reflection?

Bamford, Bale, Aguero and Forster on the bench for Gameweek 38 matches

“I’m not an expert on the strengths of all the other players you’ve mentioned but the goal record speaks for itself.

“We lost a lot of creativity last season with the departures of Ollie Watkins and Said Benrahma, so it said a lot for him to step into our team and break the goalscoring marks set by Neal Maupay and Watkins in the two prior years.

“I suppose you have to separate the penalties (11 out of 31) without ignoring them, as I doubt we can win that many in the Premier League.”

Do you have any concerns that Brentford won’t create enough chances for him in the top flight?

“That is the number one question for the club this summer, of course. We’ll have to get used to having less of the ball than we had in many games in the Championship.

“I may regret this prediction but I think some Premier League defences sit back and afford a little more space to opponents to play a pass than some of the more bruising Championship sides, who we often struggled against in the past. And we acquitted ourselves well in several cup matches against Premier League teams last season (beating Fulham, Southampton and Newcastle to nil and West Bromwich Albion on penalties, scoring eight goals in the process), so I’m hopeful that we’ll make a decent number of chances in the majority of games. There’ll be some hard days, though, for sure!”

It’s a bit of an impossible question but what do you think is a realistic target for him, goals and assists wise, in 2021/22?

“If we’re going to not only survive but try to excel amongst the bottom half teams this season, which I think we will, we’ll be aiming for 40-50 goals as a team.

“I think Toney will want to surpass what our past players Andre Gray, Maupay and even Watkins managed in their first seasons in the Premier League and aim to score about 15, including a few penalties, and maybe supply eight assists. It might sound optimistic but given his 50%+ goal involvement last year, it’s not too outrageous.”

Will you be starting with him in Gameweek 1 in FPL?

“Yes. £6.5m is not cheap for a promoted team striker, but I am confident he’ll look like a bargain when in form and it may only take one goal against Arsenal for people to be clamouring to sign him for the following weeks.”

Difficult guy to handle. If he doesn’t start well he’ll drop in price and there’s not many at that price point to switch to.

Also, Arsenal are surely odds on to score, so even if Toney does score it will be very unlikely he'll get max bonus. Your alt pick there for only needs to score say 5 or 6 points.

I'm not here to be a Toney cheerleader, honest, but where is the security with Ings? He moved clubs less than a week ago and Villa already have an established #9. Could easily be on the bench early on until he's trained with the other players for a bit.

The reason why people don’t put two defenders in the same team because it has risky for 4 points only if the team doesn’t get a clean sheet.

Well my philosophy is to pick the players I can afford and which I think will get me the most points. Simple as. I don't have huge faith in Everton, Villa run into difficulty after 3 games and Hammers hit Europe after 4. City have more difficult fixtures. So United's stand out for me. Shaw can get assists and Slab already scored a thumping header on Saturday and I back him to get more.

Clearly a talent but as the article alludes to 11 pens is an awful lot

Armstrong soon to be of Southampton scored more from open play last season in the Champo and both Watkins (2019) and Maupay (2018) either matched or bettered his returns for Brentford in open play. They both played for better teams than Brentford are likely to be in their first PL season and didn't get to 15 goals.

Lots of faith needed in GI for 15 goals to happen.

    1. Andy_Social
      • 11 Years

For 6.5 I'd be happy with half the number of pens. Would be happy to move on t Armstrong if he starts well. Must be equal to or less than Toney.

Think both could be great if they hit form and have fixtures - just kinda sceptical that either will merit a long hold.

Sort of planning to have that spot available I think but seeing transfers happening in and out.

Can't imagine many seeing Toney as a long hold though. He's a cheap enabler who might do a Pukki early doors. I expect to lose him on my WC GW7 if not before.

You make fair comparisons here, Maupay was very similar when you take penalties out, Watkins barely took any for Brentford, and none that season.
The difference between Toney and Watkins 2020, Maupay 2019 and even Armstrong 2021 is continuity, he's still playing for a team and manager where he achieved this, he's not going to need any time to adapt to a new team. And he did it all in season 1 whereas Maupay and Watkins took time to step up achieve those tallies so depends if you believe he'll keep up the improvement. On the flipside everyone at Brentford is new to the PL so the whole team will need to be stepping up.
I welcome challenge to the status quo that "he is template" which I'm seeing everywhere. And I will be watching Armstrong closely too. Good luck with your GW1 and your seasons!

Good comment about continuity - you're right that could work in his favour

As a Palace fan I've been a close student of promoted teams and what they do when they come up. I'm mostly a fan of the teams that try and keep it together and work on their USP (among the teams that will be around the bottom half) namely that they have a successful record. Keep the winning combination together and you can (bold underlined) keep winning.

Nice one. we actually came a cropper playing Sheff U in the Championship a few years ago when they had just been promoted from L1, a bad time to play a confident team. they just kept up their promotion form and we had the misfortune to be in their way on day 1..played OK, lost 1-0. Hopefully we still have similar momentum.
I've liked picking up a promoted team's striker in FF for 20+ years, but makes a change to be backing one of my own. I remember you lot (Palace) coming up with Andy Johnson and him scoring stacks of goals in about 2004/5! He was in my Telegraph FF team all that year.

Henderson got Covid, so you can start with DDG but it's probably going to be 1-2 games at best.

You think Hendo is the no1 for the league?

He probably would have been if not for the covid. If De Gea starts really well it will be difficult to replace him, but if he starts making errors again, Henderson will be given a run.

Thanks! Wasnt sure as I didn't think Hendo was solid last year and let a few soft ones in. Gamble anyway as I don't see anyone else with good fixtures and don't like sanchez as the best 4.5 option

Yeah, Henderson wasn't great but apparently he had been playing through an injury. If he gets that form back that he had for Sheffield United, and De Gea fumbles, then he should be number one again.

Keeper choice is difficult this season. I would go for Martinez if I had the cash, but currently on Sanchez purely because of Brighton's good fixtures.

    1 OR 2?

1: Dias & 6.0 - El Ghazi or Harrison or Willock
    2: Reguillon & Barnes

Not sure if this has been discussed but if Kane does not get his move by Friday (looking very, very unlikely), is he still worth the £12.5m and would you still have him in your team? I am 50-50 and he is currently in there (along with Salah and Mahrez in midfield as my premium players) but I may change my mind.

I would maby rate Son a little higher, than if Kane leave Spurs. Just to not answer your question.

      I wouldn't start with Kane.

I think he's unlikely to play unless the transfer to City gets resolved one way or the other. He's a notoriously slow starter anyway

I'd lose him for sure, can't see him playing against City no matter what Nuno says and his value may drop if casuals get rid of him because of that

Is having 4 defenders too much for fantasy? I do normally go with just three.

    Sanchez (Foster);
    TAA, Shaw, Digne, Cresswell (Amartey);
    Salah, Fernandes, Buendia (Harrison, Gilmour);
    Antonio, Ings, Toney.

I have upgraded to Wilson. I put him in two times, then i remember his fixtures in opening, which is not great.

True, but a lot of the 7.5s aren't better.

You could apply that logic to every single attacker under 7.5m in FPL, probably any non-premium in fact. You get a budget and there are compromises needed. Here you have a goalscorer, the compromise is lack of PL experience and playing for a newly promoted team.

    Leicester 2-0 Wolves
    Watford 0-3 Aston Villa

Controversial opinion: Bruno outscores Salah in the first 5 GW and his consistency in points delivery makes him a more reliable permanent caparaçon from 1 to 5

      100% with you on this

Bruno captain vs Leeds (We have to remember who Salah’s GW1 hattrick was actually against last year)

Then he’s off into Southampton, Wolves, Newcastle

48 returns in 49 starts/2 subs - the man is an FPL beast

Salah the obvious choice for GW1. I'll just determine who's quickest out of the blocks for the choice GW2. No point deciding now.

Toney may be a good shout but is Pukki at .5 cheaper being disregarded for him. Arguably a better team, not far behind him in goals last year and some premier league experience for him and Norwich

I received an email from FFS to say that I was registered last year but not this year, so please give feedback as to why. But actually, it's the other way around.

I just signed up and cancelled the autorenewal. So y'all might be sending a bunch of feedback requests to premium members asking why they aren't premium members, FYI. I still hope to get my 20 euros for submitting the form though!
