BRENTFORD 2-0 ARSENAL

  • Goals: Sergi Canós (£5.5m), Christian Nørgaard (£5.0m)
  • Assists: Ethan Pinnock (£4.5m)
  • Bonus points: Canós x3, Pinnock x2, Raya x1

Newly promoted Brentford enjoyed a dream start to Premier League life as they deservedly beat Arsenal 2-0 to kick off the new season.

Sergi Canós (£5.5m) fired the Bees into the lead via an Ethan Pinnock (£4.5m) assist for the opener, before Christian Nørgaard (£5.0m) headed home from close-range in the second half.

It may be early days for Thomas Frank’s side, but the result and nature of the performance suggest that this season can be more than just a battle against relegation.

MBEUMO V TONEY

Though most of the Fantasy discussion during pre-season was focused around talisman Ivan Toney (£6.5m), it was team-mate and out-of-position midfielder Bryan Mbeumo (£5.5m) who carried most of Brentford’s attacking threat on the night.

The 22-year-old was the most advanced of all Bees players, often operating on the shoulder of the last defender, and he was unfortunate not to have returned having come close to scoring on a couple of occasions.

Interestingly, it was Toney who found himself deeper in Thomas Frank’s 3-5-2, tasked with bringing others into play. However, we should point out that he was heavily involved and perhaps unfortunate not to pick up an assist during the 90 minutes, though the fact he didn’t register a single goal attempt is perhaps a little concerning for his owners.

Canos actually had a better minutes-per-chance average than the 31-goal striker last season (albeit with many efforts coming from distance) and he topped the shot count for Brentford on Friday, also taking both of the Bees’ corners.

Defensively, the backline did look vulnerable at times, though the performance of David Raya (£4.5m) was encouraging as he made several crucial stops and as a result collected a bonus point.

Brentford boss Thomas Frank said:

“I think the players today were amazing, they ran themselves to the ground, played with intensity, they were brave and pressed high constantly. On set-pieces I thought we were better, that’s why we did long throws and at times we could go high and knew that we could win the ball and create chances.

Ivan (Toney) has an unbelievable character and mentality and he has such a presence on the pitch. How many duels he wins… he can link-up and press for the team. He is very important to us. Bryan (Mbuemo) did a good job of stretching them, of going one-v-one and with his pace he is a big threat.”

SMITH ROWE, TIERNEY CATCH EYE

On a frustrating evening for Arsenal in which they looked short of ideas, Emile Smith Rowe (£5.5m) and Kieran Tierney (£5.0m) were the only real bright sparks.

The Gunners no. 10 pulled the strings from deeper areas, regularly breaking forward into the final third, while team-mate Tierney (no. 3, below) was one of the Gunners most advanced players and finished the match with 52 final-third touches, 11 crosses and six created chances – all game-high totals.

Arsenal’s average position map vs Brentford

However, no one at Arsenal was able to get on the end of those crosses, which highlighted just how much they missed forwards Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£10.0m) and Alexandre Lacazette (£8.5m), who were both struck down by illness earlier in the day.

On a possible Gameweek 2 return for the duo, Arteta said:

“I can’t change that. We knew that before the game. I don’t know (if they’ll be available for the next game.”

For new signing Ben White (£4.5m), it was a night to forget as he was bullied by Toney throughout, and was part of the failed attempt to defend the throw-in that led to Brentford’s second goal.

Brentford XI: Raya, Ajer (Bech Sorensen 71), Jansson, Pinnock, Canos, Onyeka (Bidstrup 80), Norgaard, Janelt, Henry, Mbeumo (Forss 86), Toney

Arsenal XI: Leno, Chambers (Tavares 81), White, Mari, Tierney, Sambi Lokonga, Xhaka, Pepe, Smith Rowe, Martinelli (Nelson 71), Balogun (Saka 59)

ESR was the best Arsenal player very explosive actually, but I agree on this transfer because the next 2 are difficult fixtures for Arsenal and also Odegaard is gonna sign for them which is gonna limit ESR potential even more imo.

Yup, he connected so well with the ball; 7 out of 10 times it goes in. Them’s the fine margins. Phenomenal save from Raya.

Pepe was unlucky not to score and get an assist.
Great save from Raya, and he put a corner perfectly on Martinelli's head but he glanced it just wide.
Tierney also unlucky not to register an attack return.

I will be concerned with Toney if he blanks Vs CRY but really no problem that he blanked Vs Arsenal. I just think Arsenal focused mainly on stopping him and forgot the others, Brentford could score 1-2 more goals but they were lacking on decision making.
Also, do we have Magnus Carlsen team ID?

It’s ok to be concerned, any player can blank in any game

There are people on here who if you literally anonymised Messi & showed him in a quiet couple of games to them they would have confidently & loudly decided he is a championship player who can’t cut it in the premier league

Out of this list (of 16 I think) only one is moderately differential (69% of template, Darren) and only four are moderately template (Jay 78%, Alistair 77%, Karam 77%, Joshua 71%). I’m moderately template (78% and a little nervous; no Fernandes like Darren and Joshua). It seems most of the notable players start safe.

A definite pattern that nearly every team is within 3-4 players of each other

But those 3-4 players make a massive difference

Personally I have (Meslier, Barnes, Ings, Bamford) for example to his (Bachmann, Grealish, DCL, AntMan)

And I honestly wouldn’t swap as I’m not picking a team for GW1

He would have had an assist for mbuemo’s shot onto the post, an assist for the flick for norgaards goal, if mbuemo hadn’t shaaat himself when through in the first half he could have squared it for Toney… Toney made several runs across the face of goal & across defenders - he just wasn’t found

We always knew that the knives would be out if he didn’t return vs Arsenal - this is how FFS works - it was the same with Bamford & Watkins every time they blanked last season they were “awful”, “dreadful”, “championship strikers”, “5.5 strikers” etc etc, people read that shite, sell, then they score, then they buy them back, then they blank a couple of times, then the shite starts again, they sell, the players score again, they buy back - rinse & repeat ad infinium

          all.season.long.

Before the game he was described as a absolute goal machine, talisman and the best thing that came out of Championship in ages - yet he didn't manage single shot in 90 minutes and his heatmap places him outside the box (from where he wasn't scoring last season).
He will get a goal here and there but he didn't look to me like million dollar player some people made him out to be, and when he scores I won't be buying him straight away.
It's only 1 game and you're right that we are be better equipped to assess him in few weeks but so far no regrets of going without.

            Also I don't carry a knife - I'm banned.

Yup, people describe things all the time

Toney was also described as terrible & not cut out for the PL (mostly by a large part of the 70% of managers who chose to avoid him)

Messi & CR7 have been described as some of the greatest players to ever grace the game, yet if you anonymised them & showed them in a quiet game, you'd have people of a certain mindset on here drawing all sorts of ridiculous conclusions about them

I personally was very impressed by him last night & haven't seen anything that suggests he's not going to be succesful - but it's too early to draw conclusions

If you watched the game and liked what you saw then that's fair enough, but you seem to be implying that everyone who has a different opinion is some kind of knee-jerking simpleton by default. I think it's a legitimate concern how deep he played in this game.

And it's OK to be concerned, as I said, in isolation people on here would be concerned by a quiet game from Ronaldo or Messi if they had never watched them and would draw all sorts of ridiculous conclusions

Like they did all season with Bamford & Watkins every time they blanked

I think conclusions that Toney "doesn't look like a 10 goal striker" are in that category (of being utterly ridiculous) at this stage

This thread is the very definition of why you block out the noise at the start of the season and give it three games. What we saw may entrench itself, or it might turn on its head.

I think the problem is most people have never ever seen him play. I've seen most of his games in the championship and yesterday was just pure strategy playing him deeper and imo he did fantastically well for brentford. Sure mbuemo and canos stole the limelight but toney just dripped class throughout especially with his first touch passes(3 of those could have easily created goals) and all round play. The goals will come.. Toney is just so clinical when those few chances drop his way. If anything I'm even more excited about brentford and toney now since they look up for the challenge in the epl and looked very comfortable(small sample size though). I think people will be pleasantly surprised when they see him play the next 3 to 4 games(and hopefully gets to take one of his stunning penalties too). Will take any potential drops on the chin since the benefit is Lower ownership.

I had Ayling all of last season and will probably have him all this season too. If he plays 30+ games in his favored right back position then he ll rack up attacking returns. One of those full backs that is also an aerial threat for set pieces. Last season was a one off due to him being stuck at cb and Leeds getting used to the pl. This season with the crowd back and him playing rb more often than not I'm expecting big things.

Big time, simultaneous matches is a massive step backwards for any FPL manager who watches games - big concession of advantage back to those who only watch highlights or don't watch games at all

          1. Brimble82
            • 7 Years

            I disagree.
Initially, I was really excited to have the staggered games and watch as many as I could.

But the eventuality of it was that the ‘thrill’ wore off.
You knew exactly what you wanted to happen/not happen in each game based on EO, MLs, H2Hs etc.

I love the excitement of a Sat 3pm. Goals going in in multiple games at the same time, the swing of an afternoon, following the spread of games on Sky Sports News or Football Focus.

I agree, you get to watch fewer actual matches, and that’s a loss, but I think the balance of things is more exciting going back to the ‘traditional format’.

I also think it’ll be better for people’s mental health NOT to have a game most every single day.

Not sure if I’m an outlier with these opinions though.
But regardless, I’m glad we’re back!

I think the choice was very important - anyone who didn't want to watch games always had the choice not to - anyone who did wish to watch them (and harvest all the information that comes with) had the choice to do so if they wish

That choice is gone now & it takes away an Advantage from managers who prioritised watching games

It is what is, not influenceable or controllable

              1. Brimble82
                • 7 Years
                5 years, 5 days ago

Yeah, the choice was there, but during a time when the pandemic took away a lot of other choices.

I still love the thrill of a Sat 3pm though.
Just have to do your research by watching games back.

If you’re looking for ‘choices’ that can be made - you can still watch games after they’ve finished.

At least this way we get the thrill too!

It’s hard to get much of a takeaway from last nights game - Brentford played like a team but missed a clinical edge, let’s face it Arsenal were dire - White is already on the chopping board and could be the first price drop - come GW3

    1. Andy_Social

With both their strikers being sick --- of playing for Arsenal, Arteta had to put out too many kids. Unless they get some quality in - Tammy, Odegaard for starters, I can see them being in real trouble this season. White and ESR are both fine players, but in a dire squad yes, they will be subject to price falls, certainly come GW4 after the transfer window has closed.

      1. Nomar

White could fall as early as this week.

Chelsea and City up next doesn't bode well either.

We all joked Norwich would be rock bottom of the league after 5 games, still on 0 points. They could be sharing that spot with Arsenal.

But football is a funny old game, as Jimmy Greaves used to say on Saint and Greavsie. Arsenal probably go out next week and shut our Chelsea, win 1-0 with White scoring with a header.

One problem for Arsenal is whats they've had really since the invincibles' time, the team has no backbone, Ben White is a good player and a good ball player but they have enough of those, they need someone to marshal that defence and that can take charge when defending a cross or setpiece, someone that'll clear a ball by going through a team-mate if he has to. Xhaka will throw in a rough tackle here and there but it's pretty much always either simply a mistimed tackle or him just being rash and losing his temper. Imagine what Lukaku could do to that defence if he starts against them next week. The spine of the team has no consistency or solidity and hasn't for years.

It'll be a curious game. You'd expect ManUtd should have things their way with Leeds' injuries but comments by both Dallas and Bielsa suggest, in spite of some of their poor preseason results, that they're in a better place than they've ever been and that they're fitter than ever. They've had a fairly uninterrupted preseason (excepting missing Phillips and the injuries) and ManUtd are still missing the likes of Cavani and knowing players like Sancho aren't fully ready.

Whilst I think a single game's threat stats might be interesting, you can see Mbeumo doesn't have the finishing pedigree. Toney is a 1 shot 1 goal type. Mbeumo stinks of Nathan Redmond; yes OOP, not a striker, will still be value but don't lose hope on Toney being the talisman of that side.

How many of you deliberately keep some cash in the bank in GW 1 for transfers?

I was keeping 1m aside to leave me flexible but I shipped out Toney for Antonio right on the deadline last night.

My thinking was 1m isn't going to help all that much if I need to add another premium to my team - I'll probably need my wildcard for that - but there are plenty of mid-priced players in my team who could be downgraded to save 0.5m here or 1m there.

I always try to spend it all. Money in the bank doesn't earn anything. I always make sure I have enough invested so I can make a switch and jump on a bandwagon of needed (Michu for example). I rarely make a change in the first 2 GWs

I think having anything itb is great if you can do it, lends you an extra bit of flexibility that can make a huge difference. I have money itb for Ings to Lukaku but overall if I'm able to leave anything there I find it's helpful. I was very tempted to spend that yesterday (as if he and Wilson can stay fit I might not do the move until GW3 and figured keeping that money for 3 weeks would be a waste) but I was happy with my team and figured something may crop up where I need it for something else or just earlier so I only used 0.5 to upgrade a 4.0 in defence to Veltman again.

Salah or Bruno for the armband next week? Im thinking if Soton looking particularly deflated with whats going on at their club Bruno could be the shout.

Tricky one for sure. Watching both closely today to assess.

Thinking Bruno at this stage, isn't he historically good against Southampton? Pope always seems to play at his best against Liverpool as well but will have to assess and take note of injuries etc

Admittedly Saints did recover after the last 9-0 and beat Leicester the second meeting that season, but now they are selling off some of their best players.

The most likely of the established teams to be relegated in my book.

I agree, between them or Burnley for me, terrible summer in terms of the transfer market for both. Southampton not having 1 established starting keeper worries me a lot. It may come down to who loans in the better players come the winter transfer market

Yeah Burnley from my memory (could be wrong) always seem resolute against Liverpool.

Barring injuries, most definitely Mo. First game at packed Anfield in a long time, place will be absolutely rocking and players will be flying.

The current leader of my work league has this team:

    Norris(v)
    Manquillo, N.Williams, Collins, Tarkowski
    Norgaard, Mane, Iwobi, Lingard
    Scarlett(c), Joelinton
    Areola, Azpilicueta, Son, Bamford

He fits my squad a bit better in terms of fixtures than Veltman, that's the only real reason

Fair but still.. Brighton have great fixtures until GW8! Wouldnt mind him coming on in any of those games.

I think veltman was only attacking when he was slightly out of position. When he was set back on the back 3 he was quiet

Fixtures and I don't want to think about getting Veltman out when Lamp is back.

Firs game of the season, I'd say Arsenal defense isn't the first or last team this weekend that will require a few weeks to settle and it was not their strongest team. I think they will be fine longer term (relatively speaking as a a top ten team).

As a Liverpool fan I wouldn't be surprised if for example we concede a goal today even though I expect a comfortable win. Teams not settled yet.
