Premier League clubs announced on Tuesday evening that they have decided not to release players for international matches played in red-list countries in the September break.

That’s something that, of course, affects Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers.

Previously we discussed the worst-case scenario, highlighting the players who would be at risk of missing Gameweeks 4 and 5 (and potentially others after future international breaks) as a result of their upcoming involvement for their home nations.

These FPL assets included Mohamed Salah (£12.6m), Raphinha (£6.5m) and Emiliano Martinez (£5.5m).

Yesterday’s announcement from 20 top-flight teams seemingly quells fears on that front but this is surely not the last we’ll hear on the issue.

And, in a further, as-yet-unconfirmed twist, the Athletic report that…

Players would be banned from playing for their clubs for the international window, which runs until September 9, plus a further five days.

This would exclude them from the games on the weekend of September 11 and 12.

They would also risk further disciplinary action from FIFA.

The Premier League clubs also protested against FIFA’s decision to extend the international window in South America by two days in September and October, which would mean a belated return ahead of Gameweeks 4 and 8 for a number of key FPL players representing Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Colombia, Ecuador, Chile and Paraguay – if they are allowed to make the trip, of course.

Tuesday’s statement read as follows:

Premier League clubs have today reluctantly but unanimously decided not to release players for international matches played in red-list countries next month.

The clubs’ decision, which is strongly supported by the Premier League, will apply to nearly 60 players from 19 Premier League clubs who are due to travel to 26 red-list countries in the September international window.

This follows FIFA’s current position not to extend its temporary release exception for players required to quarantine on their return from international duty.

Extensive discussions have taken place with both The FA and the Government to find a solution, but due to ongoing public health concerns relating to incoming travellers from red-list countries, no exemption has been granted.

If required to quarantine on return from red list countries, not only would players’ welfare and fitness be significantly impacted, but they would also be unavailable to prepare for and play in two Premier League match rounds, a UEFA club competition matchday and the third round of the EFL Cup.

This period takes into consideration 10 days of hotel quarantine on return to England but does not include any additional time that would be required for players to regain match fitness.

Premier League Chief Executive Richard Masters said: “Premier League clubs have always supported their players’ desires to represent their countries – this is a matter of pride for all concerned. However, clubs have reluctantly but rightly come to the conclusion that it would be entirely unreasonable to release players under these new circumstances.

“Quarantine requirements mean that players’ welfare and fitness will be significantly impacted. We understand the challenges that exist in the international match calendar and remain open to workable solutions.”

Clubs also discussed their dissatisfaction with FIFA’s decision to extend CONMEBOL’s international window by two days in September and October from nine to 11 days.

This places additional international obligations on players from that region, to the detriment of their availability to represent their clubs.

FIFA was urged to work with all stakeholders to ensure an agreeable conclusion can be reached on the issue.

Now the International break does not impact too much with FPL is it a good move to:
Mahrez and Obafemi to Raphina and DCL for -4?

Yeah I like it. Just learn from it though. City players are always going to frustrate unless you have someone like Dias. Many will say to keep Mahrez for Arsenal but I’d just get rid.

Did you read the article? FIFA sanctions are likely to include barring the players not released form playing in GW4 as a minimum. It looks as if EUFA will be with the PL (and clubs) on this given the threat to the integrity of the Champions League, so we have two big beasts lining up against one another to protect their money trees. This is not over.

To be honest I did not until after I posted. I only read the press this morning. I still feel safe making the move though. If it goes wrong I have no playing Raphina instead of a dodgy Mahrez. 1 take on it though. Does FIFA want turmoil about insisting players endanger themselves or other by these threats?

What would you like to know. I guess the key thing to know is when a player is not fully fit their price is affected slowly. When their status changes again, the price is locked.

Thanks RTH. Is it ANY change that triggers a lock? ie. red to orange, orange to yellow, red to yellow, OR only when their status changes from one of red, orange, yellow to fully fit (no colour).

Not quite true. A players price is only ever locked if their flag changes directly from Red to Green eg after a suspension.

If it changes from Red to Amber then it is never locked in price.

I knew the thing about locks but not about the changes slowing when not fully fit.

Also, I think it only locks when changed from red to "all clear". Not the other way around. A player can get flagged and still drop in price that same day

So after their status changes again, how long is their value locked for?

Gilmour for me. Nailed and I think on set pieces. Expect him to get a few attacking returns this season.. although if my fpl team stays injury free he'll stay on my bench! I don't think any of them are viable as a regular starter, although I guess ok to rotate with a 4.0/4.5 defender.

I know, they would drive me insane also if I had them for previous 2GW's. But the reason I think Grealish is nailed is because he's their record signing and I guess it wouldn't make much sense to bench him when you just spent 100 pounds to get him. He, Ederson, Dias and KDB when fit are their most nailed assets imo.

But no if you’re that confident then go for it.

I can't get Pogba as I already have Shaw, Bruno and Greenwood.
Son is pout of range because I don't have the money and I don't wont to make a hit for him.
Raphina I do like, but I'm afraid whether he'll play in GW4 and 5.
So it comes down to Grealish, presumably more nailed option with the better fixtures 😀
        Cheers!

Bench looks like this: Ayling, Livramento, Perica. I guess Ayling will at least get me 2 pts. Cheers!

Did my transfers early as I will be busy later this week

    Barnes>Benrahma
    Targett>Livramento
    Mahrez>Raphinha

    [-4] 4.3M ITB.
Might get DCL or Lukaku next week
Keeping Tsimikas for now as he can endure a 0.2M drop

If Son is not fit this week, Son>Fernandes or Pogba

Is the general consensus WC for GW7 and load up on Chelsea?

0.5M spare for the below although a lot can change between now and GW7!

    Sanchez
    TAA, Dias, Rudiger
    Fernandes, Raphinha, Mount, Benrahma
    Lukaku, DCL, Antonio

    (Foster, Ayling, Livramento, Gilmour)

    Cheers.

I think you and others can bring in 2 or 3 chelsea by GW8 if you want to hold your wildcard.

      1. Catastrophe
        • 15 Years

Cheers. Possible of course, but their fixtures aren't great before, and means 'prematurely' losing Salah, Greenwood etc.

      • 14 Years
      5 years, 5 days ago

Ouch! That's a bit too similar to my GW7 WC except I keep Salah over Bruno (and so without the spare change).
Of course price rises will wreck it!

      1. Catastrophe
        • 15 Years
        5 years, 5 days ago

Difficult to fit them all in isn't it. I'm 'feebly' trying to cover Liverpool and City with only TAA and Dias!

        1. Andy_Social
          • 14 Years
          5 years, 5 days ago

As I'll have to make cutbacks, I'll prob downgrade Dias, leaving my squad a 100% Manc-free zone!

Ideally wanted to fit Grealish in but not sure it's possible (although may be possible if going for Armstrong as Flair suggests below!)

            1. Andy_Social
              • 14 Years

Antonio's hammys will have gone by then, and Benrahma will be bereft without him, so Armstrong and a 5.5 mid will prob be enough to cover price rises.

True, an injury or two would probably help the headache dare I say.

Feels like too many 'must haves' this year! Fernandes, Salah, Son, Lukaku.

Bamford is a better choice than both DCL and Antonio on GW7/8 WC due to Leeds' fixture run.

This wouldn't need a WC. Most of these players are already in the template. Triple Chelsea and Dias are the only ones that aren't.

Actually this would be 8 transfers for me, but I get your point. The problem then would be losing players before their fixtures worsen and bringing players in before their fixtures improve.

...is there likely a better time to plan a wilcard prior to Christmas, than GW7? Accepting we could get hit with unexpected injuries. I don't think there's a major fixture swing before that time?

1 FT and 2 options - thank you!

    a) Martinez --> Lloris (fixture change GW4, straight transfer, no IB
headaches, seems crazy to FT an uninjured GK)
    b) Coady --> Dier (2 good fixtures, Spurs seem solid at back, cover for
question marks on Tsimikas, Amartey actually starting/benched)

    Martinez (Foster)
TAA - Coufal - Amartey (Tsimikas - Coady)
Salah - Bruno - Pogba - Soucek (Bissouma)
    Antonio c - Ings - Wilson

    Hi all,

Could soucek outscore benrahma in the next 4-5 weeks ?

Has more goal threat and will always play 90 even after IB. EL or Wenn Lingard moves to westham.

I have Soucek and was really thinking I needed to switch to Benrahma, but then I saw the replay of the match and Soucek had some good opportunities and I think the points will come. Keep pace with Benrahma, should be close!
