Ex-FPL winner Simon March: How to avoid getting carried away with your GW1 picks

After a Gameweek 6 score of 44 and a fourth red arrow in succession, I embraced the ‘Sunday night Wildcard’ cliche and finally pushed the button. For this article, I’ll be sharing my current draft and a bit of the thinking behind it.

First off, a word on the timing of the Wildcard. While I had my fair share of yellow flags and underperforming players, it was mainly the concern that I would be priced out of the team I wanted that made me choose this Gameweek. As you’ll see, this necessitates greater investment in the Liverpool v Man City fixture than I’d ideally have liked and a Gameweek 8 Wildcard would not only have avoided that but, also, have allowed me to better mop up any problems that might occur during the preceding international break.

However, neither of those factors seemed significant enough to warrant holding off and, equally, there are opportunities to be gained from tapping into some of the good Gameweek 7 fixtures.

Finally, I’m approaching this Wildcard with a fairly long horizon and am targeting the players and teams that I think can deliver for the foreseeable future. Equally I’m seeking enough depth that my squad can cope with the unexpected. My hope is that this will help me establish a reliable enough foundation that I can use my transfers progressively rather than reactively going forwards.

So, without further ado, here’s my current Wildcard draft.

Goalkeepers

The Kasper Schmeichel (£5.1m) / Danny Ward (£4.0m) Leicester goalkeeper rotation is a hill I’m willing to die on this season having already had it from the start. While they are not the most popular picks between the sticks (ooh that rhymes), at least not in the FPL community, they haven’t done badly, averaging 3.0 points per game so far, despite Leicester’s dismal defending.

Schmeichel is second for saves made, which helps him in terms of save points and bonus points but just the one clean sheet is not all that convincing a return. That said, I do believe Leicester will improve, particularly with the return of Jonny Evans (£5.4m), and, also, that it is more likely that they will sort out their defensive problems than some currently better-performing options are likely to maintain their defensive solidity.

Finally, at £9.1m combined (£9.0m for me), Schmeichel/Ward offers a strong certainty of a playing goalkeeper for a fairly low cost.

Defenders

My strategy for the defence is to get three near-to-nailed-on players from what appear to be the three best defences in the league (Liverpool, Man City and Chelsea) and then, ideally, leave them for the rest of the season so I can focus my transfers elsewhere.

Need to replace Bamford, but having a hard time deciding between the id-priced forwards available. Have $7.9m budget, so looking at

    A) Ings (7.9m) - proven goalscorer, average fixtures
    B) ASM (6.8m) - good form, average fixtures
    C) Toney (6.3m) - next two fixtures are hard, then take a turn for the better
    D) Armstrong (6.0m) - good stats , difficult fixture this week, then a sea of green
    E) OTher??

Note that all except Ings will allow for upgrading Christensen to Cancelo next GW.

    Cheers

It seems like the most popular captain choices are all up against in form defences this week. If you go down the table to find someone in attacking form playing against an average or worse form defence, the first pairing you get to is raphinha. Maybe sarr. Anyone going with a cheap captain?

Antonio count? But yeah he’s facing a decent defence too and had European football last night.

I’m between Antonio or Lukaku. Got half an eye on doubling down on my terrible Alonso purchase and capping him.

      Rather doubt the captain choice

Palace have conceded once at home - to a duff free kick by the keeper. They haven't even been looking like conceding. This is Leicester after an away Europa tie playing away.

      1. Moderately content penguin
        • 7 Years

Should add that I started the season with a captaincy rotation targeting Palace. Now off it. Don't especially rate the attack still but the defence looks to be among the strongest non top 8 defences.

      2. Deulofail
        • 10 Years

Tempted to switch to Lukaku, but they've only had 3 games at home. And they've conceded 8 in their 3 away games, so they have it in them to ship 'em, just as Vardy has it in him to score 'em

        1. Moderately content penguin
          • 7 Years
          5 years, 14 days ago

They can ship them but 75% of those were set pieces and it was Chelsea Liverpool and West Ham away.

Not convinced by Vardy this week is all I'm saying. That said I'm not sure I especially like anyone this week. You can make much the same argument for Southampton as Palace (only they're away).

Can I survive one more week with this?

    Sanchez
    White - Livramento - Shaw*
    Benrahma - Salah - Greenwood - Torres - Jota
    Ronaldo - Antonio

Bench: all injured and possible Shaw wont play too.
Good change that Greenwood, Jota and Torres wont start. Livramento have Chelsea.

    Pros: I have 1 FT.

    A) WC
    B) Take -4 to get 11 out and hope Jota, Torres and Greenwood play/start.

If B) Probably doing Torres and TAA > Chelsea def and Raphinha/Saksa for -4 and next week active WC. Dont like hits before WC, but now its most likely just -2. Also players I want in have already rose, so cant catch any price rise.

In a similar position of questioning whether to hold out for one more week then wildcard.

Even though it goes against FPL etiquette, I'd take the hit and replace TAA and your 5th defender for 2 x Chelsea defenders. There isn't really a defence there at the moment.

You can reset your team after gw8

Really would like to wait a week, yes.
Atleast I have to take a hit If I dont hit WC. My team value is very low because dont want to make early transfers.

I think that one Chelsea def and Raphinha is good and just trying to get 11 players out.

Been at the stadium yesterday, pretty exited to see English side here in Warsaw.

Tbh Lei looked really poor, the only eye catching one was Maddy, pure class with a ball!

    (L)!

Been good too but Maddy yet on the other level.
And Vestergard is a freaking huge guy when you see him live!

    WC GTG?

    Ramsdale
    Alonso Rudiger Dias Cash (Livra)
    Salah Raphinha Saka (Mbeumo Brownhill)
    Lukaku Vardy Antonio

    ITB 0.3

Trent avenue could be downgrade Vardy > Toney and upgrade Cash.

For those holding of to WC gw 8 because you would have 3-4 players different..

If you WC this week do you think your new team outscore your current team by more than 8?

Best defender up to 4.6, playing this week but probably last on the bench going forwards? Coady, Lowton, Duffy/Veltman, someone else? Can’t decide!

Guys is Cancelo still a big rotation risk given Zinchenko due to return ?

Normally he’s not someone I go for for that reason but have made an exception on my WC because:

      1) Zinchenko doesn’t have a firm return date and historically has had a few injuries with slower than expected returns.

      2) City only have 3 full backs and Cancelo has the advantage of being able to play both sides.

      3) City’s next European games in midweek are benign so would expect Cancelo to be rested in one of those and the LC.

I could well be wrong and am trying to predict the unpredictable in Pep but I think he’s worth it atm.

With Trent and Ayling out, I'm down to 10 men.

Was planning to WC next week, and I think I'm still set on that, but is it worth swapping out Ayling for a Chelsea or Wolves defender for a 1 week punt hit this week given I'm down to 10 anyway? If so, who?

I have enough ITB to afford any defenders under 6.3m.

        Obviously that's the other option.

It's a risk v reward thing isn't it. I should make back 2 of the 4 point hit immediately (as long as they don't concede loads) given I'm down to 10, and then clean sheet odds are quite high and potential attacking reward added on.

I am exactly in the same situatuon.. thinking to play 10 and ok.. but is smarter to bring rudiger for auling for a hit…
It’s more good some player to do something and take something then stay with 10..
