We round up the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points of the day in FPL Daily, a series that will serve non-Premier League matchdays and days when we don’t bring you a team news/press conference round-up.

JAMES OOP, ALONSO BENCHED

Reece James (£6.2m) was fielded in the centre of midfield by Thomas Tuchel on Wednesday evening, with more natural options in the engine room unavailable or, in Saul Niguez‘s (£5.0m) case, deployed at left wing-back.

“I expect normally N’Golo (Kante), Mateo (Kovacic), Jorgi and Ruben (Loftus-Cheek) to start in midfield and they are all out today so we need to be a bit creative and put Reecey in there.

“We knew about the quality in central midfield and wanted to have some physicality. That’s why he helped us there today but the target is to put him back on the wing. For this, we need players back who can play in central midfield.” – Thomas Tuchel

While James played the full 90 minutes, Marcos Alonso (£5.7m) and Kai Havertz (£7.8m) were only thrown on for the final quarter of an hour and Antonio Rudiger (£6.1m) was rested altogether.

Chelsea conceded three goals for the second time in five days in a six-goal thriller in Russia.

RONALDO RESTED, WAN-BISSAKA INJURED

Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.4m) was absent from the Manchester United squad that faced Young Boys on Wednesday evening – but before any panic sets in, so were all of the other 10 players who started for the Red Devils in Gameweek 15.

Diogo Dalot (£4.4m) is attracting a fair bit of attention in the FPL world as a cheap route into a United defence that has fixtures on their side over the coming months and his prospects of keeping his place at right-back in Gameweek 16 were given a double-boost when firstly he was rested and then his positional rival, Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£5.1m), was stretchered off on the stroke of full-time.

Despite the serious-looking nature of the injury, however, Wan-Bissaka appears to have come through his last-gasp collision with the hoardings with just “knocks” to show for it.

“He received two knocks, one on the wrist and one on his knee. He’s being treated now in the locker room… but I’m positive that he can, the day after tomorrow, train again and hopefully be part of the team against Norwich.” – Ralf Rangnick on Aaron Wan-Bissaka

Mason Greenwood (£7.2m) impressed up front and scored but his manager said more work was needed on his physicality before he became a “regular”:

“It’s about continuity, he has to develop physically but technically, for his age, he is a great player. My job is to develop him, to make an athlete out of him, and if he manages to do that can be a regular player for this club.” – Ralf Rangnick on Mason Greenwood

TONEY CONFIRMED OUT OF GAMEWEEK 16

There was one official pre-Gameweek 16 press conference held on Wednesday and it involved one of the managers whose team is in action on Friday night.

Anyone with a grasp of Key Stage 1 mathematics would have deduced that Ivan Toney‘s (£6.7m) positive Covid-19 test, which was taken last Friday, would also rule him out of Gameweek 16.

Thomas Frank confirmed that news on Wednesday but refused to rule the striker in or out of Tuesday’s Gameweek 17 clash with Manchester United, which falls outside of the 10-day isolation period – but only just.

COVID HITS SPURS AND LEICESTER

On the subject of Covid, we reported earlier on Wednesday that Brighton v Spurs looks in some danger of being postponed – a scenario that looks increasingly likely now that the Lilywhites’ Europa League match against Rennes is off and that the first-team area of their training ground is out of bounds.

Son Heung-min (£10.4m) was among those not spotted in training.

Leicester v Spurs next Thursday must also be in some doubt, and the Foxes themselves have issues ahead of Thursday’s Europa League clash with Napoli and a Gameweek 16 encounter with Newcastle.

“We’ve had a number of people, staff and players, who haven’t travelled. We’ve had some positive [COVID-19] cases, some are generally not well, so we haven’t taken the risk.

“Certainly, Youri [Tielemans] has travelled. He’s trained very well and he will be available. Ryan Bertrand, who’s been out for a week or so, has travelled as well. They’re both available for the game.

“We will have seven unavailable. [Who they are is] something you’ll see in time. You’ll see in the training tonight the ones who haven’t travelled. It’s been [over the] last few days really. In general, you’re starting to see a few more cases and, for us, it’s always about the health of our players.” – Brendan Rodgers

Same position here and sticking with 10 players for this gameweek. Too many drawbacks to that transfer.

Yes it is worth -4 because he is also missing a game in 24/25 when Chelsea go for the CWC....

The only other GK 4.6m and under is Guaita, so it a bit of a toss up. For what it's worth he has a decent fixture in GW24 too.

But honestly those two are similar. 51 vs 50 points. I'd say its worth a -4 just for a go, but they'll probably score similarly throughout. Low risk, low reward.

I don’t want him, as don’t think he’s worth the value, but he may become necessary if he’s deemed essential determined by EO%

Messed up reasoning. What other people are doing doesn't affect your points.

Just try to maximise your points. It's that simple. If a team with Ronaldo in gets you more points than one without, get him.

Imo, there is no where worthwhile to spend the money if not on Ronaldo. So although I agree, he is not the best value, the alternative big hitters are worse.

You can't fill your team with just good value players at or you'll end up with a ton of money in the bank and less points.

No I totally agree it’s about maximising points but I do not know for sure that Ronaldo is the right man for that, I’m unsure which approach to take tbh and whether or not to bring him in. But FPL isn’t just about thinking about who is going to get you the most points all the time, because we sometimes / often get it wrong, so the offset that we need to manage risk. Salah (c) is a prime example, ok yes most think he is going to score most points most weeks, however, the fact his ownership is so high and most will (c) makes (c) someone different a much riskier option and one less likely to be taken up.

Anyway, we all perhaps share different strategies which is fine, that’s the beauty of this game, it can be approached in a number of manners.

                Thanks mate

                  Fair point.

For me it's not so much about predicting points, no one can do that, but predicting the chance of points. I'm always mindful of the average points I can expect with average luck. Tilting the odds in my favour as much as possible so over the long term, I maximise my points on average. Other people are irrelevant imo.

But you've opened my eyes to the more stock broker risk management style. I still don't like it, but I'll be more tolerant of it in future 🙂

  5. Team Style of Play Updated
    Ze_Austin

Styles of play update, based on my observation and opinion:

Everton is feeding their striker. Now that their engine room is fit, Benitez has them playing how they started the season: everything goes towards their number 9. This makes that striker a great FPL asset from GW19, and I'd actually prefer him to Gray, with most/all of Gray's shots coming from outside the box (the box belongs to the striker). That's Richarlison now, but it'll be DCL soon. I'd like him as my Dennis replacement, but I wouldn't hesitate to get Richarlison instead, if DCL has another delay to his return beyond GW20. Palace is playing this way too, when Benteke's on the pitch. Edouard is more of a holdup player when he's there instead

West Ham no longer feeds their striker. This is how they played when Antonio had a dry spell last season, and actually scared me with regards to starting with Antonio this season, but those fears left in preseason. Moyes seems to have tweaked it to a full front-three/four attack again, or Antonio just isn't getting as many shots or good shooting positions due to fitness levels or something; I'm not sure. In the Chelsea game especially, I saw Bowen making the Salah/Mane runs while Antonio held the ball up well and fed him, but also got into the box now and then himself. I think Antonio is still a great asset, and I hope things change back to feeding him when they meet easy opponents from GW16. I'm definitely getting Bowen (set pieces only help), but a double-up or even triple-up with Coufal is definitely on the cards. West Ham is impressive. Again. At this point, I guess I'll start saying "West Ham is playing as expected"

Even during Ragnarok, it's still all balls to Ronaldo. Nice. No idea which of Man U's full-backs will end up nailed, as there were fitness issues that gave the understudies this chance they've had to impress, and I wouldn't try to predict Rangnick with this small sample size. I'll avoid their mids until the preference is clear

Almost everyone is fit for City, including Foden, Ake and Jesus. Foden and Ake, according to a reliable journalist. Jesus was seen in their recovery session, with the official Man City site saying he was one of those "rested" for the UCL game. Sterling is a huge threat to Jesus now, imo. I think KDB is more of a threat to Gundo than he is to Bilva, but it remains to be seen. I also think every fit City player will miss one to three starts in the next two months, but that would shock no one. Don't VC a City player who started the last two games in this period, is my advice

I've done a -20 before, but that was more down to a bet I had. But I can still tell you: any hit above -8 is absolutely not worth it unless you're certain the players you bring in will stay in your team for the next 6-8 GWs at least.

    Need some advice please folks!

    Sanchez*
    Rudiger Dias Cancelo TAA
    Raphinha Salah (C) Gallagher Son*
    Dennis Antonio

    Foster* Toney* Duffy* Normann*

All marked players are doubts. I have no GK and no bench and will only be able to field 10 players. Whats the best move to make here. Thinking:
    Foster ->Guaita and
    Son -> ? (10.9 ITB for replacement) for a -4.
Anything better I can do? Perhaps replace Son & Toney and play with no GK?
    Thanks

it always tickles me when people take a -4 hit and justify it to themselves because it’s for a non starting player that it is really only a -2 … then said player gets a red card or concedes 3 goals with a booking 🙂

So should I do Sanchez to DDG this week as its only a -2?

What would you rather? No James.

    A. Alonso + weak bench
    B. No CHE defender + strong bench

How nailed is Coufal (4.7)? If he is, it's great value with those fixtures.

Got injured then forced to sit on the bench due to Johnson’s great form. Now the roles will be reversed unless Coufal has a few stinkers, which I can’t see happening. Pretty safe imo

Thx, the link up with midfield and Antonio has potential there

Two first choice CB's out long term. I'd avoid as clean sheets might be lacking.

So many transfer options, but I guess it comes down to Ronaldo or Antonio.....I will have Bowen from GW18, so I'm starting to lean towards Ronaldo.
    It would be:
    Kane and Toney to
    Ronaldo and King

    Easy moves?

Bring in both if you can? Feels like one of those weeks where a hit or two won't set you back much.

Sanchez, Kane, Raph to De Gea/Ramsdale, Ron and Bowen for -8. Yay or nay? Or maybe keep Sanchez and play with 10?
