We have chosen our best Fantasy Premier League (FPL) players for Gameweek 29 ahead of Saturday’s 11:00 GMT deadline.

We line up in a 3-4-3 formation and are limited to £83.5m – the small, annual increase to the starting budget that you can read more about here – for our first XI.

Our four substitutes, meanwhile, are always picked from the budget/cheaper crop of players, not to serve as bench fodder but to give some alternative options who don’t cost as much as some of the names in our line-up.

GOALKEEPER AND DEFENDERS

In-form Robertson an appealing FPL differential for Gameweek 23 and beyond

The goalkeeper vote went down to the wire this week, with Everton’s decent-ish home form and superior fixtures almost leading us to Jordan Pickford (£4.9m). In the end, though, with the Toffees a difficult team to trust, we’ve gone tried and tested with Aaron Ramsdale (£5.1m), whose points-per-match average of 4.9 is the best among first-choice goalkeepers. The Gunners’ two fixtures look a bit iffy from a clean sheet perspective, with Leicester and Liverpool ranked seventh and first for goals scored in 2021/22. Ramsdale, at least, can compensate with some save points if he does get the nod: he made 13 in total across the reverse fixtures of Gameweek 29’s matches. The Foxes are also coming into Sunday’s clash in the middle of a two-legged UEFA Conference League tie and with less than 72 hours of recuperation time from Thursday’s win over Rennes.

Andrew Robertson (£7.2m) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£8.5m) both get the nod, meanwhile. The pair are first and second for FPL returns (goals, assists and/or clean sheets) in the last 16 Gameweeks, with Robertson averaging 8.2 points per match over that time. Saturday opponents Brighton and Hove Albion are woefully out of form at present and while Arsenal may pose a stiffer test, Alexander-Arnold’s highest score of the season came against the Gunners in the reverse fixture.

Matt Doherty (£4.7m) is a serious upgrade on Ben Davies (£4.4m), the initial ‘bus team’ pick from the Tottenham Hotspur backline. Since Antonio Conte took charge, Doherty’s rate of expected goal involvement (xGI) is better than that of any FPL defender – and almost as good as Son Heung-min’s (£10.8m). Doherty has been involved in seven Opta-defined ‘big chances’ in just 496 minutes of pitch-time under Conte, with four falling to himself and the other three created for others. Yes, he’s not completely nailed with Emerson Royal (£4.7m) lurking, but his form is such that it’s his shirt to lose at right wing-back.

      I'm going with Kane

      1. Bojam
        • 8 Years
        4 years, 26 days ago

I'm leaning this way too. Kane less likely to get a random benching (read: not going to happen). Salah might though can still do damage off the bench of course.

I'm chasing a big OR rise as well so thinking Kane TC has more chance of paying off. That might be flawed logic tho...

There are lots of good reasons for both. In a nutshell for me, Kane is in superb form, I think both games suit Spurs and they're better away from home, and I think Liverpool have tougher fixtures with Arsenal and Brighton both being problematic for them. If VVD is out then they'll have even more trouble as he's so important to their build-up play as well. They may still do great or even eke out a couple of 1-0s with Salah goals but I feel confident taking the chance on Kane

GW28 score of 95 and barely any rank rise, sadly went Saiss over Cash a few weeks back and then Raphinha over Coutinho for the double so only have myself to blame! Hopefully I'm not set up too bad for the next few weeks, starting with GW29:

    Ramsdale
    Doherty, Tierney, TAA, James
    Kulusevski, Salah (C), Raphinha, Saka
    Kane (vc), Weghorst

    Sa, Dennis, Saiss, Ramsey

Food for thought, new A/B 😉

    A) Ramsey + R James > Kulu + White (-4)
    B) Ramsey, R James + Cancelo > Robbo, Martinelli/Øde + Doherty (-8)

    1. Nate(U)dog(ie)
      • 5 Years
      4 years, 26 days ago

I wouldn't bring in White personally, very low ceiling and I think Arsenal may well concede in both games (for the record I have Tierney but am planning to move on in a couple of weeks so I can get another attacker soon). Robbo certainly is in form and has a high ceiling but I wouldn't like the Liverpool double up if VVD is out (and even if he's fit again I think they may concede in both games too). Kulu or Arsenal mid sounds good, but I'm really unsure on defender. I'd keep Cancelo though

Plan to sell one of Rudiger or James this GW for Doherty. Question is which one? All depends on how long James is likely to be out for - anyone heard anything concrete?

    What would you do?

    A. Rudiger
    B. James

Defence this week will be: TAA, White, Doherty

The Chelsea player will be benched so not needed until GW31.

Ha. Probably sensible. Be a shame though if he's back fit for GW31 to deliver more hauls while Rudiger plods along with 6 pointers.

I love Rudi's consistency-- dont forget James is a real feast and sometimes famine player. I owned him during his looongg famine period.

Fair play. I hear you on Rudi. I had him for a long time earlier in the season and he was a reliable source of points. Guess I've just been spoiled with James' 18 pointer last week. First time I've owned him all season. Got on Chilwell for his purple patch before the injury as a double up with Rudiger.

            Thanks for the advice.

    Ramsdale (Foster)
    TAA, Rudiger, Doherty (Coady, Amartey)
    Salah, Saka, Kulusevski, Coutinho, Gordon
    Kane, Laca (Hwang)

10 for GW30. Any needed changes? Any help appreciated.

First time on in a few days so apologies in advance for what I'm guessing has been asked in a roundabout way several times already! Which option looks best:

    A) James, Son and Dennis - Doherty, Kulusevski and Kane (-8)
    B) James - Doherty only (free transfer)

A would give 8 doubles for GW29 and XI playing for GW30. B would have 7 doubles for GW29 and 10 playing GW30. So wondering if the extras (plus Kane) justifies the hit.

Not really FF but at halftime for wales c France in 6 nations they had an ex ref in Nigel owens getting asked about the Ref’s performance during the game. He was also commentator for the S4C (in welsh) Coverage. Imagine if we had that level of respect and openness in football!

BT I think have a former ref in studio so they can ask him if the ref has gotten certain calls right or wrong mid-game. I do wish referees could be interviewed after games or speak about why they've made certain decisions openly to the press, this idea that they can never speak publicly doesn't help whatsoever

      1. Dammit_182
        • 5 Years

I think this is the crunch of what I’m after really. Seems really open and all of a sudden I have more respect for the Ref, understanding of you ‘type’ of reg they are and the role of the captain.

I don’t have BT sports but that sounds like a good insight actually. I do sometimes think we need to just accept the decision is so marginal it’s open to interpretation and allow it to happen. (Provided it gets me FPL points)

          • 5 Years

Yeah, I mean it's a human role after all, subjectivity has to come into play and mistakes happen. But the fact that all mistakes are covered up (for lack of a better term) and the FA / PGMOL have to constantly act like any mistakes were correct decisions because of this or that really obscure rule they dig out of a rulebook that still has no real importance on the decision given just makes it feel wrong. If a mistake is made at least let an official accept it and try improve and ensure it's learned from for everyone

          1. Dammit_182
            • 5 Years

Completely agree. Need more openness on decisions and I think more insight/an acceptance that making mistakes is part of it would really help. Just hearing an ex Ref talking so openly, proudly and insightfully about a working refs performance have me something to ponder….

-12 is huge, you're taking out 2 players with doubles, a striker against one of the worst teams in the league and a midfielder in good form. I know he's done well but people really are looking at Kulusevski with tinted glasses, I wouldn't be surprised if Son has a huge week this week

True, but Jimenex har 6 goals all season, and Wolwes dont really score alot. Kulu is a cheap temp placeholder just to get the dgw and nice returns lately. -12 isnt that big, a ton of players making -8, not that huge a diff?

I'm not saying -12 can't pay off but I think in your situation it's unneeded, many of those taking big hits may do well and may get rid of poor or out of favour players, some could get burned, with the players you're losing if you do it unfortunately I think you could be one of the latter. If you think it'll pay off then go for it, just my two cents

Can't see any sense in these transfers. You know how it will play out right. You take a -12 and ship out Son only for him to haul. You swap Tierney for Doherty only for Tierney to get a cleansheet and assist vs Leicester. Etc....

For a -12 to pay off you need everything to fall miraculously into place. It can happen. I took one earlier in the season to bring in Ronaldo and Lukaku. They both scored braces that week, i captained Lukaku and the hit paid off big time. But one of the transfers out that week was Son who was ruled out so blanked. Another was Ings who was up against a watertight Chelsea defence and got 2 points. Mane, who was also shipped out scored once and got 8 points. On another day he could have hauled.

Can you not get Kane in without taking a massive hit?

This definitely feels like a week where I'm glad to have been ahead of the curve on Spurs players and don't have to take hits, avoiding one could be a big help and I could certainly use any advantage after having a disaster last week

What's your trio? I struggle to decide whether to get Kulu or Doh. See above^

I had Kane and Son and got Doherty now, like what I've seen of him (watched both recent games). Kulusevski is a good option of course and it's a big price difference so I get it, but Son is as reliable a player as you can get

For those who have their 2 FH's and a WC remaining, when are you looking at calling them in?
