FPL first-draft team reveals: Big at the back, Jesus up front

With Fantasy Premier League (FPL) live for 2022/23, we’ll be welcoming back our stellar team of Pro Pundits and Hall of Famers for the new campaign.

We’ll be hearing from a different writer every day in the aftermath of the FPL relaunch, to get their thoughts on the pricing and to see their initial picks.

Our writers will be providing regular articles and team reveals throughout the new season, with only Premium Members able to access every single one.

Next up is Burning Questions co-host Pras.

Fantasy Premier League is back! That rush when the game opens and you quickly check some prices (personally I went straight into checking the £4.5 midfielders and forwards), the warm fuzzy feeling buying the big hitters, and the beginning of multiple screenshots on your phone. That’s what FPL is about. No doubt the disappointments will come after Gameweek 1 deadline, but let’s enjoy the next few weeks first.

For my first article in the 2022/23 season, I’ll share a very early draft. In fact, I wouldn’t even call it a draft – more like the initial gut feel/instinctive picks given the pricing. I will use this to talk about my immediate thinking and some pros and cons of going for this structure. The only guarantee is that this will change as the pre-season friendlies, the Community Shield and incoming transfers inevitably add vital information over the next few weeks.

Macro

Everything you need to know about the FFS World Cup of FPL

A couple of macro points first.

The fact that the entire game has unlimited transfers during the World Cup makes this effectively a 16-week game with one Wildcard that must be played during this period. The first Wildcard can therefore be used strategically to either (i) pre-plan for fixture swings or (ii) act as an emergency bailout by going ultra-aggressive initially. I like both ideas.

We have been blessed with a unique situation where the best teams also have the best first few fixtures. In the first seven Gameweeks on the Fantasy Football Scout fixture ticker, Arsenal are #1, Chelsea are #3, Liverpool are #4 and Manchester City are #7 when the matches are sorted by difficulty. We don’t need to be taking unnecessary punts on promoted teams or bottom-half sides with good fixtures; remember the Adam Armstrong (£5.5m) gambles last summer?

The premiums

Who are the best FPL captain options for Double Gameweek 36?

Currently, I strongly favour the two-premium structure with Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) and Erling Haaland (£11.5m) and using the extra funds for more full-backs. However, given the attractive pricing across the board, I do expect a few ‘threemium’ drafts. Andy North and I did a video for Scout this week on the different structures, so do check that out:

The defence

FPL 2022/23 prices released: Live updates - James and Chilwell revealed 1

I ended the final five Gameweeks of last season with Reece James (£6.0m), Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m), Andrew Robertson (£7.0m), Joao Cancelo (£7.0m) and Marcos Alonso (£5.5m) in my team. I very much intend to continue this theme with these “game-breakers”. Going back to the ‘good teams and good fixtures’ strategy, I genuinely see points at both ends of the pitch for these players yet again; it’s how the game has evolved now.

My five picks are therefore Alexander-Arnold, Cancelo, Robertson, Ben Chilwell (£6.0m) and Ivan Perisic (£5.5m). Every single one of these guys could have arguably a million more in price and still be good picks.

I am fairly certain I will have the first three but I am still scouting Chelsea for any change in formation/transfer activity to decide whether it is an ‘and/or’ with Reece James (£6.0m) and Chilwell. On Perisic, I want to see his fitness and minutes in pre-season and am ideally hoping that Sergio Reguilon (£4.5m) is sold but the upside is certainly there with him in the Antonio Conte wing-back system.

    Quite liking this

    Mendy
    Trent Cancelo James Perisic Cash
    Salah Diaz Neto
    Haaland Toney

    Gazzaniga Martinelli Andreas Greenwood

Could do Toney and Martinelli to Jesus and elanga but like having 1 good bench option

Nice team! But why have Martinelli if you are gonna bench him vs. Palace?

I think arsenal will struggle against palace opening day. No one else stands out as a better benching for that first week?

It’s the way to go in my opinion, no 5-6m mids or fwds are going to touch the likes of cash and trippier, never mind perisic, James, chilwell

I'm going without Salah. Yes I've said it, but to have every single starting XI player come from last season's top 5 teams only gives me the reassurance I need that this team should work!

    Mendy
    Trent, Robbo, Cancelo, Chilwell, Perisic
    Son, Diaz, Grealish, Martinelli
    Haaland

    4.0, 4.5, 4.5, 4.5

The no Salah part I don't mind (heck it was my plan too until he signed his new contract) but I don't feel like the money is used to it's best. No bench and Martinelli, Grealish and Perisic means you could have some painful weeks.

Has anyone done/know of a calculation of how any FPL points/points per game for Halland based on his Bundesliga scoring over last couple if seasons ?

    1. Fletch69
      • 2 Years
      1 year, 10 months ago

Without bonus points it was 6.4 last year. So a bit off Son and Salah who were both over 7.

He had a fair few injuries though.

      1. Fletch69
        • 2 Years

Year before was 6.4 as well (without bonus).

So points-per-million wise, on a par with those 2 and he's cheaper. Presumably the baps would make him top. Of course, the weaker Bundesliga sides are probably weaker than the lower end of the PL.

        1. Fletch69
          • 2 Years

I think the thing with Salah and Son is they have history and you can be fairly sure you'll get the points. Haaland is still only a "probably"

Son and Salah both got over 7 without bonus? I think they were both a bit under actually?

        1. Fletch69
          • 2 Years

No, Haaland is without bonus. son and Salah scored are with bonus.

However Haaland PPG also assumes he played at least 60 minutes per appearance. It's just a rough calc. to see how they compare.

          1. Fletch69
            • 2 Years
            1 year, 10 months ago

Son was 6.6 and Salah 6.7 if you take away bonus points.

            1. Alan Watts
              • 5 Years

And Son only really stepped up after Conte took over...his ppg over that period must be way higher

      4. Alan Watts
        • 5 Years
        1 year, 10 months ago

Interesting..so probably on par with Salah, Son when baps factored in

You'd expect him to take pens at city, did he in Bund ?

Son Salah will start every game, Haland more likely to be occasionally rotated

Then there's the change of system, presumably at Dort he was out and out striker and focal point. Will he adapt to city or vice versa ? Another Ronaldo type situation, tho obviously he's more versatile at his age ?

If Son keeps up where he left off last season, as Contes main man up top he could be the one everyone is overlooking

        1. Alan Watts
          • 5 Years

Another useful comparison might be Agueros best average season under Pep, had some problems initially adapting to Peps system, Jesus was more in the running at that stage

        2. Fletch69
          • 2 Years

Son for me, but the biggest issue I have is that if you don't go Haaland or Kane there are very few strikers in the game who look like hitting a decent return. 7 to 8m on a player who gets 120 ish points is a huge waste....

          1. Alan Watts
            • 5 Years
            1 year, 10 months ago

Fair point...Jesus could do well, as could Wilson, and if Ronaldo leaves whoever plays upfront for Utd could be value ...

              • 2 Years

Toney was ok but improved with Eriksen who's now left.

Antonio fell off a cliff which is why Bowen scored so well when they put him up front.

Mitrovic, been there before, fell for it twice..... Never again

Jesus, is he a 20 goal a year striker, has he ever been?? Maybe

Wilson is an injury waiting to happen.

I just don't see one let alone two, I guess Jesus is the pick of them but that's why so many people have him.

Do people not realise Diaz is competing with Nunez for that left-wing position?

Nunez will not be a forward, because Klopp has Jota and Firmino.

Don’t fancy Diaz. 60 mins when he starts, and could easily be benched.

Going to be lots of players like kdb, salah, son etc all getting dragged at 60/70 mins from winning positions this season, just going to have to get used to it - could still be good value in him

LW: Diaz, Jota (maybe Darwin if injuries force it but not regularly)

Mané was playing CF, so replacing him in a way (with Diaz having already taken over LW). I wouldn't rule out 4231 entirely but expect same formation with Diaz/Darwin/Salah front 3 (Jota/Firmino easing Darwin's transition)

I think partly thsys eju a new midfielder is not on the menu this summer. Alternatimg more between 4-3-3 and 4-2-3-1. Carvalho also a possible 10, and Eliott is one year older. The fitness of Thiago, Hendo and Keita will be be keys. And i think they let some people like Oxlade Ch see out their contracts just for making sure they have qualitiy in bench in busy periods.

Last season we played Diaz on the left and mane down the middle. Nunez will play down the middle rotating with firmino, Diaz will play most mins on theeft, and obviously Salah nailed in the right. Jota will get minutes anywhere across the frontline

That’s true but the schedule this season is insane after Gw4. Champions League every week! This is why I don’t like Diaz because for the juicy fixtures after United I think he’s a major rotation risk.

Love the sarcastic replies when you have zero logic to back up claims.

Diaz owners keep confirming your decisions and don’t come crying when he has insane competition for his place. They’re not just going to randomly not replace Mane are they! Absolute waffle merchant of course I’ve heard of rotation. Plonker.

Diaz was the replacement for Mane. They moved for him early because Spurs went for him in Jan. You started off by claiming Nunez was competing with him for the left wing spot when he was clearly bought to play as a striker. You appear to have consumed far more waffles than I sir.

Then if my Nunez is wrong, then Jota is adequate for the left-wing position. You’re here assuming Diaz plays every week, whilst Nunez, Jota, and Firmino battle for one spot. That just isn’t going to happen in my opinion.

Where the hell did I say he plays every week? Your 'discussion' technique appears to be making up someone said something then arguing against it. The case is that Klopp played Diaz from the off when he came in last season and your argument was that Nunez was suddenly going to replace him when he was clearly bought as a striker.

No one said there wasn't going to be rotation, we all made that point to you. I even pointed that out to you there would be above. The fact is there will be as much rotation for Diaz as there will be for Foden, Mahrez, Kulveski and others at that price range that play for the elite clubs.

You pointed out rotation after I said Diaz will share minutes. I completely acknowledged rotation, yet you asked if I ever heard of it in an incredibly patronising way. The technique I apparently favour is a technique you’re replicating. So we’ve both done it, therefore I think we should both accept we could have handled the debate better.

You also said Jota isn’t forward. He played as a striker for the majority of the season.

Nunez always plays very similar to Werner, with two upfront. Heat maps, particularly against Liverpool were from the left. Werner soon became utilised as a winger/wide forward. I think Nunez has been bought to fill this role, providing the formation remains the same.

Therefore, in my mind Diaz shares minutes with Nunez, whilst Jota and Firmino battle for the forward position. This is assuming everyone is fit.

The point of my post was to argue against Diaz. So far you’ve basically just helped my case in overemphasising rotation.

We can both play this game.

I’ve used the term “competing”, which absolutely suggests minutes shared.

You said “ your argument was that Nunez was suddenly going to replace him when he was clearly bought as a striker”.

I have never said Nunez was replacing Diaz, not once.

I’ve also expanded on why I believe Nunez will be a wide forward.

I'd rather hear it from the Man himself:

“It’s important we all recognise we are getting a ‘work in progress’ with Darwin,” Klopp said after the transfer was confirmed. “There is no pressure on him at all. He signs for a very long time and we intend to nurture his talent and see it grow,” added the Liverpool manager.

Jota played most games as central forward last year. After afc and the introduction of Diaz he played both on right, left wing and as forward. Diaz is best from left wing. JOTA is best if he plays as central forward/striker in Klopp 4-3-3 becausr he is more of a fox in the box than a Winger with high speed. All 4 Liverpool attackers are quite immune against positional change, tactically theu are very adaptable. Firmino is the exception, but he can also play as a 10 and with growing age also as part of midfield 3.

2 places 3 players, firming isn't going to get much game time in the Premier league I believe.
But they also signed 1 player from Fulham who plays on the left I believe.

One of things that’s disappointed me over the last season or 2 is how fpl has effected my enjoyment of watching Tottenham, even if I try not to let it

So, this season I am determined to play the season with triple spurs the whole time including son and Kane

Here is the draft I have made

      Raya
      Trent cancelo chilly Doherty tomiasu
      Son salah Neto Martinelli
      Kane

      4.5 4.5 4.5 4.5

      What do you think?

I support a championship team which makes fpl easier. Don’t let a fantasy game ruin your enjoyment of football though. Go for it! Triple spurs was fantastic end of last season no reason it won’t carry on under Conge

Haaland is a generational talent going in to the best team in Europe (who have failed in the champs league due to not having a player who seizes the key moments) who create the most chances.

It’s not shiny new toy syndrome, it’s logic. Not to say it can’t go wrong, but it shouldn’t.

I don't think this is just novelty like Werner. Firstly Haaland has excelled in the CL against a variety of opponents (and some very good ones at that). He's done well at international level too. He will have to adapt a bit but he's a player who's positioning is superb and he is a ruthless finisher, and he will have service from all sorts of areas on the pitch, and he's going to work under Guardiola. Is the league fully suited to how he had to play at Dortmund? No, but I've seen lots of people act like Dortmund only played counter-attacking football only against high lines and it wasn't the case. They had the second-highest possession stats in the BL and needed players like the likes of Bellingham and Reus to break down low blocks and stubborn defences often because teams knew what they could do on the break if allowed to play that way.

I've seen Shearer say he thinks if anyone will break the PL goalscoring record for a single season, it'll be him, and not because of him breaking away at top speeds from defenders but because of the intelligence of his runs and his movement. I don't always agree with everything he says but he sure knows something about forwards and how to score goals.

For me its not about Haaland not having the qualitiy to succeed. Its more that Pep will need a lot of work to make him a better defender. That will take time to adjust and IT can result in him beeing less efficient when he gets his chances. Bundesliga defenders are on par with championship level, they are really really bad.
And he is not used to press harder, Solbakken, the Norwegian coach touched upon this element og his game in the last International game.
And with 1.95 with fast miscle fibre into a much higher intensity game, how will hos body react to that?
And West ham away is a tough game.

That's fair, we saw the same thing with Aguero and he ended up having a period as second-choice even though he was still scoring. I think having the deal completed early is a huge benefit, simply knowing how you'll set up in the next season before the current one has even ended and having the full preseason to work on that is huge, they didn't get it with Grealish and I think it impacted him. I think his body will be fine, City had the lowest incidence of soft-tissue injuries in the league last season so they know how to manage that and dominating the ball helps of course.

Also West Ham away is tough, but don't forget Spurs couldn't beat Southampton last season in either game under Conte. They can be a very tricky side for the top teams even when in poor form

I normally ignore EO but Haaland ownership and pedigree is too much for me to bet against at the start of a season. Back yourself though! Werner had crazy ownership at the start a couple of years ago and completely flopped. Kane v saints is nice and if it goes wrong GW1 it’s an easy switch

Six recent Premier League signings from the Bundesliga, rated from best to worst:

      1. Moussa Niakhaté (Nottingham Forest)
This is a great signing - a robust left-footed played who joined Mainz 05 from Metz in 2018 and has been a mainstay in the defence for the German side ever since. In addition to his defensive skills, Niakhaté was also an excellent team captain last year and was Mainz 05's designated penalty-taker. When Mainz were awarded three (!) penalties against Bielefeld in March, however, Niakhaté took the first spot-kick himself but then insisted that two other team-mates, Burkardt and Ingvartsen, got the chance to convert the next two penalties.

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kB3Kb6nY2es

      2. Stefan Ortega Moreno (Manchester City)
Easily good enough to be a first-team goalkeeper elsewhere, Ortega Moreno has been a giant of the Bundesliga Fantasy game over the last two seasons. Since the start of the 2020-21 season, he led all Bundesliga keepers in saves (245), successful passes (2444) and successful passes into the final third of the pitch (283). Worth monitoring if - for whatever reason - he gets a run in the Man City team.

      3. Taiwo Awoniyi (Nottingham Forest)
Awoniyi will be hard to predict this year. He was great at Union Berlin in the first half of last season and is at his best when running at opponents on the break. He needs a strike partner though, and the departure of Max Kruse mid-season really affected his productivity for Union in 2022. After that, Awoniyi's touches in the box fell by 12% and his goals per 90 minutes fell by 19%. If Forest create a system that plays to his strengths, then he'll be fine. Otherwise Awoniyi may spend a lot of time doing things that are good for the team, such as tracking back and running in the channels, but don't translate into FPL points.

      4. Omar Richards (Nottingham Forest, yet to be confirmed)
Out of favour at Bayern Munich, where Julian Nagelsmann's system favours attacking wing-backs such as Alphonso Davies. Richards was solid defensively in his limited appearances for the club last year, but offered little going forward, and Bayern were surprised to recoup as much as €10 million for their reserve left-back. Could be OK in shoring up the Forest defence, but needs more match practice in order to develop.

      5. Tyler Adams (Leeds United)
An unsurprising move, perhaps, as this will be the third different club for which Adams has joined up with coach Jesse Marsch. Part of the reason why Marsch was sacked at RB Leipzig was the amount of goals the team conceded before Christmas. After Marsch left in December, Adams became only the fourth-choice central midfielder for the unlovable Red Bull marketing trinket, making a summer move inevitable for both sides.

      6. Marc Roca (Leeds United)
Not a bad defensive midfielder, if he has been playing the position in about 2014, but the role has since expanded beyond his skill set. Good at distribution, Roca is fatally lacking in pace, which meant that he wasn't suitable for Bayern Munich's 'Gegenpressing' under trainer Julian Nagelsmann. Everyone assumed that Roca would return to Spain if he moved on, and certainly not go to a league such as England that has an even faster pace. If he looked slow in the Bundesliga, where Bayern's opponents often sat back and gave the Munich club time to pass the ball in their own ranks, then Roca is going to look slower still in the Premier League.

I always thought Richards leaving Reading for Bayern was odd, I know a lot of German clubs keep a close eye on young British talent and we couldn't turn down the money but I wish he got a chance elsewhere, hope the move to Forest goes through and he can pick things up again.

Yes, agreed. Bayern Munich often take a flyer on young British players, but their scouting process seems a bit random.

Remember Dale Jennings, a Tranmere Rovers forward who Bayern signed in 2011? After one season with the Munich side's reserves, Jennings returned to England and now plays for Prescot Cables in the Northern Premier League Division One West.

Son + Odegaard > Salah + Neto and you have my squad exactly. Much prefer Odegaard to Neto but happy enough with Jesus up top as Arsenal coverage.

Don't think I have the minerals to start the season without Salah - as the most expensive player in the game, your squad will need some surgery to get him in later

I'm just not considering going without Mo, regardless of how strong the rest of the Team looks. For me at least - it has NEVER worked 🙂

I think the key to a (potentially) successful no-Salah team is to make sure there are no skidmark picks in the first 11, so the likes of Neto, Mitrovic, Watkins, etc become no-goes. Huge defense, 5m keeper, minimum 8m's across the midfield and Haaland up to could be the way. It might still fail miserably but with this pricing there looks to be a number of ways to do well. Interesting times.

It does feel a little like this 'could be' the season where it may be viable, but I've just been stung too many times 🙂 I think he's going to go berzerk this year and I can see Diaz inevitably suffering some rotation. I still consider him to be great value in isolation, but can't look past Salah (see draft below 😉 )

Seen it yeah. As three premium sides go, it's about as good as you'll see. I'm just wary of losing so much value over multiple positions even with two premium sides.

              Yeah it’s a tough call.
Will have to see if I’ve got the minerals come game time. 🙂

🙂 I like to go quite 'safe' in the early GWs to avoid falling behind and making rash decisions/taking hits. Turning a no Salah Team into a Mo Salah Team will take quite some surgery (probably losing Kane/Haaland which could then massively backfire!)

I know all the downsides, but Son (c) v Saints is very tempting indeed.

Yes, the pick of the bunch. Kane with pens and 0.5M spare looks good too 🙂

          Thoughts?

          Alisson
          TAA, Chilwell, Perisic, Laporte, Tomiyasu
          Salah, Martinelli, Neto
          Kane, Haaland

          (Lis, Andreas, Milivojevic, Greenwood)

I'm sure it'll change significantly in the coming weeks 😉 fairly settled for now, I think. Going with Kane, Salah & Haaland and steering clear of Diaz to begin with.

4.5GK + Cancelo over Alisson + Laporte for me
            Looking great otherwise.

Cheers, will definitely consider that (and also upgrading Tomiyasu -> Digne/Tripper and potentially bench). Laporte & Dias finished the season so strongly I think they're both great options. A little concerned Cancelo may face some rotation against weaker sides.
