NOTTINGHAM FOREST 3-1 HERTHA BERLIN

  • Goals: L Taylor x2, own-goal
  • Assists: McKenna, Donnelly

Match highlights

Neco Wiliams (£4.0m) impressed at right wing-back as Nottingham Forest defeated Hertha Berlin on Wednesday.

The bargain-bin FPL defender was instrumental in his side’s first two goals, firstly providing the nimble footwork and cross that Scott McKenna (£4.5m) nodded on for Lyle Taylor (£4.5m) to convert from point-blank range.

Williams’ through-ball for Taiwo Awoniyi (£6.0m) was then fumbled by the Hertha goalkeeper, with Taylor mopping up to double his tally.

The 20%-owned Williams had earlier supplied another chance for Awoniyi so although there was no attacking return on paper, there was plenty of promise from the budget Fantasy asset.

On the opposite flank, Harry Toffolo (£4.5m) made his debut on the same evening that positional rival Omar Richards (£4.5m) was ruled out for up to 10 weeks with a hairline leg fracture.

“Omar has picked up an injury, we are still getting to the bottom of it. But it is unfortunate what has happened. It is not going to be a few days. But it is not going to be months and months and months.” – Steve Cooper

Elsewhere, Brennan Johnson (£6.0m) – heavily involved in all set plays – was deployed slightly deeper in the number 10 role of a 3-4-1-2, a tactical tweak that may be reversed if Forest can secure the signature of Jesse Lingard.

And while the sight of a £4.5m FPL forward scoring a brace grabs the attention, it was only a few weeks ago that Taylor was reportedly made available for transfer by Forest after spending part of last season out on loan.

£4.5m midfielders Jack Colback and Cafu were yet again paired in the middle of the park, meanwhile, but Forest did add to their engine-room options with the capture of Lewis O’Brien on Wednesday. First-team regular Ryan Yates (£5.0m) is also still to return from injury.

Nottingham Forest XI (3-4-1-2): Henderson; Worrall, Niakhate, McKenna; Williams, Colback, Cafu, Toffolo; Johnson, Awoniyi, L Taylor

Subs on: Biancone, Cook, Mbe Soh, Laryea, Mighten, Ojeda, D Taylor, Hammond, Fewster, Donnelly

ASTON VILLA 1-0 BRISBANE ROAR

  • Goals: Archer
  • Assists: Watkins

Match highlights

Cameron Archer (£4.5m) made it two goals in as many pre-season games with the match-winner against Brisbane Roar but whether he will become the pick of the bargain-bin FPL forwards is still uncertain.

It’s not just pecking order (third in line for a striking spot) or formation choice (a 4-3-2-1/4-3-3 would limit the opportunities further) but whether he’ll be even at Aston Villa come Gameweek 1, with the young hitman saying that a decision is about to be made over whether he departs on loan.

“Yeah he [Gerrard] said at the start that he’ll let me know whether I’ll go out on loan or not at the end of the Australia tour.

“So I’m going to try my best to impress him. Obviously I would prefer to play here but if I need to go out on loan to play games, because that’s what young players need, we’ll see.” – Cameron Archer

Archer, part of a front two with Ollie Watkins (£7.5m) in the second half, swept home his strike partner’s mishit shot to hand Villa the win, shooting off-target with two decent chances either side of that goal.

The first-half set-up saw Philippe Coutinho (£7.0m) playing slightly deeper as a number eight, rather than ‘in the hole’ where we’re accustomed to seeing him, so it’ll be interesting to monitor his usage in pre-season as we assess his FPL potential for 2022/23.

Formation choice might also be key for Leon Bailey (£5.0m), who again shone in a wide role in the first half. The Jamaica international was at least used as part of a front two towards the end of last season, so it’s perhaps not a given that his starting chances rest solely on Gerrard’s use of wingers.

And as previously mentioned in last week’s write-up, the acquisition of Boubakar Kamara (£5.0m) looks to have given Lucas Digne (£5.0m) and Matty Cash (£5.0m) even more license to push forward, with the pair noticeably high up the field against Brisbane.

Aston Villa first-half starting XI (4-3-3): Martinez, Cash, Carlos, Chambers, Digne, McGinn, Kamara, Coutinho, Bailey, Traore, Ings.

Aston Villa second-half starting XI (4-3-1-2): Martinez, Kesler Hayden, Konsa, Mings, Augustinsson, Iroegbunam, Luiz, J.Ramsey, Buendía, Archer, Watkins.

HULL CITY 0-4 LEICESTER CITY

  • Goals: Daka, Barnes, Fofana, Maddison
  • Assists: Soumare, Maddison, Dewsbury-Hall

Match highlights

After setting up a strike in last week’s draw with Leuven, James Maddison (£8.0m) carried on his pre-season form with a goal and an assist in Wednesday’s thumping of Hull.

Maddison delivered 22 attacking returns in his final 23 appearances of 2021/22 and was in eye-catching mood on Humberside, providing a peach of a cross for Wesley Fofana (£4.5m) to nod in and then bagging a fine goal of his own to round off the scoring.

The midfielder also whistled a direct free-kick narrowly wide.

It was only really the second half of the Foxes’ latest pre-season friendly that would have been of much interest to Fantasy managers, with Brendan Rodgers sending out mostly his second string in the opening 45 minutes.

The glorified reserves were in a wing-back system prior to the interval, with Patson Daka (£6.0m) on target, but Rodgers changed to a 4-3-3 after the interval with the big guns of Maddison, Jamie Vardy (£9.5m) et al sent on.

“We played two different systems and the players played the systems very well. We need that adaptability and we showed great quality tonight.

“The goals were very good, with good build-up play, but everything was connected and I was really pleased with some of the tactical things we’ve been working on. Especially, with the second-half team, some of the areas we looked to get into, with full-backs, with the no. 8s, it pushes us higher up the pitch when we can be more aggressive. With and without the ball, it was a pleasing night.” – Brendan Rodgers

Harvey Barnes (£7.0m) was also on the scoresheet but his strike was heavily deflected.

If there’s anything to read into the ‘first-team’ selection in the second half, then James Justin (£4.5m) and Ricardo Pereira (£4.5m) have the early advantage in the game-time battle of the attractively priced full-backs.

Leicester City first-half XI (5-3-2): Iversen, Thomas, Soyuncu, Vestergaard, Amartey, Castagne, Tielemans, Mendy, Praet, Perez, Daka

Leicester City second-half XI (4-3-3): Iversen, Pereira, Fofana, Evans, Justin, Soumare, Maddison, Dewsbury-Hall, Albrighton, Vardy, Barnes

WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS 4-0 ALAVES
WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS 1-2 LEVANTE

  • Goals: Jimenez pen, Neto, Podence, Kilman | Toti
  • Assists: Neto, Gibbs-White, Jonny | Ronan

Match highlights v Alaves

Wolves contested two pre-season friendlies in the space of 12 hours, the second of which was early this morning against Levante.

Bruno Lage named his strongest starting XI in the initial game against Alaves and there were some interesting personnel and tactical decisions to note.

The first was Lage’s setting up of Wolves in a more attacking 4-3-3/4-2-3-1, systems that the club have been working on in their training camp.

Another was the deployment and impressive performance of Morgan Gibbs-White (£5.5m) on the right of the Wolves attack, with the budget FPL midfielder supplying the assist for Pedro Neto‘s (£5.5m) strike.

You’re not wrong in thinking all this sounds familiar: Lage used a back four for much of pre-season last summer before belatedly switching to the wing-back system we saw for much of 2021/22, while Gibbs-White was heavily used in the friendlies before departing on loan.

And, true to form, Lage sent out his troops in a 3-4-3 in the match against Levante on Thursday morning, although it was a significantly weaker side on paper.

Neto, the sixth-most-owned FPL midfielder at present, had earlier won the penalty that Raul Jimenez (£7.5m) converted, while Jonny (£4.5m) – whose attacking threat wasn’t diminished by a shift to full-back from wing-back – crossed for the pint-sized Daniel Podence (£4.5m) to nod in after the break.

There were encouraging displays by Podence, Neto and Gibbs-White in a fluent Wolves attack, although Lage’s side were admittedly up against a side from the Spanish second tier.

“Honestly, I’m better than I thought. There were difficult times before but I finished the season well. I had more games than I was expecting and this summer I needed the break to get my knee back.

“Now I’m feeling very good and I think that my levels are rising and rising to be better than I was before.

“It’s all about confidence. It’s always difficult for a player to come on the pitch and think ‘oh it will hurt again’ but what I want to enjoy every game that I have.” – Pedro Neto

The fit-again Max Kilman (£4.5m) rounded off the scoring with a solo goal from his own half.

Podence and Yerson Mosquera (£4.0m) were both sent off in an ill-tempered defeat to Levante, meanwhile, with Toti (£4.0m) nodding in Wolves’ consolation.

Gibbs-White started as a ‘false nine’ in this match before being replaced at half-time.

Wolves XI v Alaves: Sarkic, Jonny (Lembikisa 77), Coady (Collins 59), Boly (Kilman 46), Ait-Nouri (Toti 77), Neves (Griffiths 77), Moutinho (Hodge 77), Dendoncker (Podence 46), Gibbs-White (Corbeanu 59), Jimenez (Cundle 77), Neto (Campbell 77).

Wolves XI v Levante: Smith, Mosquera (Lembikisa 46), Collins (Toti 64), Toti (Boly 46), Bueno, Dendoncker (Ronan 64), Ronan (Griffiths 46), Corbeanu, Cundle, Podence (Hodge 46), Gibbs-White (Coady 46).

The only thing I'd be worried about is the commitment to a zero from your F position if Haaland is rested. Six game weeks a season?

I was thinking this, I can do:

        Son > Bailey
        Archer > Kane

And that feels a bit less risky…

Given that more value can be found in D and M, I wonder about whether that much investment in F is the best use of funds. That change you propose leaves you very thin for points in the midfield for the sake of having splashy names up top.

Son and Archer to a 8.0 M and a forward who will play regularly for his club but is cheap enough to you to count as bench insurance might be an option.

I'll leave it up to someone else to chime in and name the cheapest forward who looks to be in line to get somewhat regular minutes. I settled on Brennan Johnson at 6.0 as my forward insurance option.

I really want some Spurs cover though. Kulu could be an option but I’ve seen a lot of scare stories on here about how prone he will be to rotation now Richarlison is around. A thinker!

Then by all means keep your Spurs cover. It's your team, and if Spurs cover is worth the price of taking blanks at F when Haaland experiences the wonders of Pep roulette, then that's cool with me.

Threemium rosters are going to have holes, and that's okay I suppose if you think that 38M or so of spending (three primos plus a bench fodder slot) gets you maximum points when distributed over three players rather than spread over four.

I'm CTID, but I can't justify that level of spending on Haaland until I see how things work out in reality. I'd rather have Jesus (who feels to me like he's about as nailed as he's been in 2000 years) and some cover at F that actually might outperform some of the members of your current XI in some weeks.

What do you mean by 'nailed on'?

    A) Will start
    B) Will feature
    C) & play 60+ mins
    D) & play 70+ mins
    E) & play 80+ mins
    F) & play 90+ mins
    G) Every game
    H) in the next GW
    I) in the next 5 GWs
    J) In the next 10 GWs
    K) Over the whole season
    L) [Add your own]
    M) [Add your own]
    N) [Add your own]
    O) [Add your own]

    E.g. 'BGJ'
    Or 'ACL[except easy fixtures]'

Pretty sure category 'nailed on' is useless tbh, and even more so with 5 subs. Players can be 'nailed' and play 45 mins per game as far as I can tell. Frequency/likelihood of reaching 60 mins could be more useful.

Though for forwards, mins per game is surely more important than frequency of starts, which is more important than nailedness (i.e. 'starts all' vs 'does not start all').

    Thoughts?

ACGK for at least most of my opening day roster, but . . .

ADG and somewhere between I and J depending on where we are in the schedule. As much as planned transfers can come back to bite you, it's definitely the case that you will have some free ones that you can use.

Finding value players who are going to be as AG as possible seems to me to be an important element of maximizing production.

I'm on him right now after looking at . . .

      1) His history
      2) His price
      3) The chances that United will continue to be a complete train wreck.

I think the odds of #3 are actually pretty small, so I see a lot of potential upside to the pick. If United continue to be FC Dumpster Fire, I can lateral out to a safe and boring option like JWP.

If you asked me for a list of players who are potentially seriously underpriced, this guy would definitely be in the conversation. Understanding how it's relatively easy to fold the hand if it looks bad, I want in on this from day one.

      Very bold prediction
I can't agree with spurs winning the league sorry. Good manager but lacking depth in the squad still
Haaland injury prone - possibly but city have already said they will manage his minutes according to Atheletic
Mane was a key player, will be interesting to see how Diaz steps up. I know he looked the part end of last season but that was with Mane too. I think Liverpool will be OK but they may struggle to score as many goals this season

I think any team picking a bench full of non-playing fodder is in for a rude awakening - COVID is still going to make players drop out of squads at the last minute - personally I’m leaning to having at least 2 playing subs in the 4.5-5.5 region.

The bench has 2 x 90 minuters to cover it. Plus this season you're getting 3 WCs so very different circumstances. You want the sprint not the marathon this season. But each to their own! 😀

    Sanchez - Steele

Jesus is the obvious one, but I chose Saka above him. Haaland is on hold for now. Justin is also on observation and can be replaced if he isn't a starter.

Salah of course lacking, and City attacker, but Haaland too uncertain as of now, and KDB is just too expensive I think. KDB+a 5,5 mid might not outscore Bowen+Mount for instance.

I want to see how Arteta uses Zinky before I go in on him.

I'm sitting on Kyle Walker right now as a placeholder because it looks to me like he's going to play for the first few weeks at least given that Pep is pretty much short of options to start the season. No matter who City bring in, I don't see Walker losing his slot for at least most of August.

Zinchenko will likely be used as a midfielder for Arsenal (according to lots of reports).

The question is would FPL change his position? If not, he will get CS points while playing in midfield and therefore he will be a bargain at 5.0 - never mind Neto/Bailey/Andreas etc he would be the go to mid in the price bracket

His position in FPL won't be changed. He's a D for the rest of this year. Of course he's now counting on Arsenal rather than City for CS points.

I've heard that he's going to be deployed as a midfielder by Arteta, but what's left to be seen is how he's going to be deployed in the midfield. If his xGi doesn't look like it's going to jump because he's being played as some kind of deep-lying ball-winning MF (Xhaka/Partey position), then the extra minutes he'll get moving to Arsenal still might not be enough to justify the investment.

Will he be more valuable than a healthy Tierney? I need to see some games before I can answer that. If it looks like he's *clearly* more valuable than a healthy Tierney, then I'd argue that he enters the must-have conversation.

I agree with all of this, and would add that I think Zinchenko has LESS of an attacking threat as a holding mid than as a fullback, so I'm less likely to pick him if he is playing in Arsenal's midfield.

Thinking about the midfield deployment question and that Arteta looks to be comfortable making Arsenal into some kind of "City 2.0".

Would it be beyond the stretch of the imagination to see that Zinky is being brought in to play the Rodri role? (deep-lying, range of passing, pops up at edge of box here and there)

If Zinky plays regularly, what's his xGi in that role? I'm intrigued enough to watch it very carefully, but since he hasn't even officially been introduced as an Arsenal player (photo holding up the shirt), I don't know if you're going to get a full read on the situation for at least a few game weeks.

Maybe it's wishful thinking, but I'm of the opinion that the time required to see what Zinky has to offer is around the same amount of time as Kyle Walker's shelf life as a nailed starter.

I don't want to spread this around too much but this is my theory on the James vs Chilwell debate...

James' very high ownership (44.1%) means that a differntial option (in Chilwell @ just 11%) is quite appealing.
Chilwell is less likely to play CB than James --> more attacking returns for Chilwell

Particularly with a lot of high ownership players I think Chilwell is a nice, slightly off template pick with a higher ceiling than James (if Chelsea do fail to sign another CB then he will likely play CB - would you pay 6.0m for a Chelsea CB?)

You've made a very clever observation. If Chelsea are playing with wing-backs, then are James and Chilly basically the same guy? Unless Tuchel is definitely telling the pair "you go forward, and the other one stays back", their per-game averages suggest that one isn't necessarily all that different from the other. The eye test might give you a clear answer on Cancelo versus Walker, but I don't see the same difference between James and Chilly.

Considerations regarding differentials and which of the two is the more likely to be deputized into a CB position are well worth making.

I quite like it, but the United double up is probably too much.

Could do Martial downgrade and upgrade Perisic to TAA?

This sounds like a good move, the Utd double up and uncertainty around Perisic feels risky

Good effort that, but...I don't like the idea of 3-4-3 because there are some great value defenders (Arsenal defence @ 4.5 like Tomi and White) and some 'cheap' premiums like Chilwell/James @ 6.0 (you have James - nice) and Trent is a bargain @ 7.5 in my eyes.

      Lets start with defence...
Sanchez - good keeper, I'd maybe prefer Raya/Meslier as a backup if you can afford it...
Cancelo - must have, especially with some rumours of him playing on the wing...
James - like it, I'd prefer Chilwell personally
Perisic - winger classed as defender. essential.

      Into midfield...
Salah - pretty much essential reallly
Diaz - like him, maybe not alongside Salah though...try Saka/Mount/Mahrez/Maddison/Coutinho in there maybe
Rashford - great value, could be explosive - keep an eye on him in preseason
Bruno G - not keen personally, maybe Neto Bailey or even Martinelli is affordable for you

      Finallly the forwards...
Haaland - I like this, can be switched easily with Kane if needed
Jesus - I like this, think he will perform well and he is very nicely priced @8.0
Martial - a 'maybe' option for me, i think rashford and martial is a little bit of overkill tbh. Try Mitrovic/Undav/Johnson/fodder instead and then upgrade Bruno G

      The bench...
      Steer - nice cheap option
Mitchell - good option last year, cheap, effective
Neco - cheap WB, hard to go wrong (put him as first sub?)
      Diallo - fodder

      Could do with Pool def
      Martial & Perisic > Robbo & Tripper/Cash

    A:
    Mendy (4.0)
    TAA Cancelo Trippier Dalot (Neco)
    Salah Rashford Martinelli Neto (Andreas)
    Kane Haaland (4.5)

    B:
    Meslier (4.0)
    TAA James Cancelo Trippier Dalot
    Salah Kulu Rashford (Bailey) (Andreas)
    Haaland Jesus (Greenwood)

A: Kane Martinelli Neto Neco Mendy
B: Jesus Kulu Bailey James Meslier

      I'd go B

      But I would want...
      1) another 8.0m mid >> Kulu
      2) Chilwell >> James

What's the reasoning for B? I agree there are better 8.0 options but I worry having no Spurs cover then, and other than Kane and Son not confident on who is nailed. Chilwell over James would be easy enough, if it remains that James could play CB I see that as a good option

Too light in DEF? This draft is growing on me.

    Mendy
    TAA | Cancelo | Dalot | Neco
    Salah | Diaz | Mahrez | Rashford
    Kane | Jesus

A bit. Trying to fit 3 8's in is tricky, especially with a 5 keeper.

Be interesting to see the bench. Wouldn't want Neco starting every week probably but other than that it looks good

Alisson in and that could very well be the starting line up for the Fulham game

Just need Nunez to look like a donkey one or two more times this pre season

Probably too soon to go for it but its tempting to put him on the menu at 5m

Yeah, I agree. I haven't considered any defender at that price but it would be a spanner in the works if he became first choice. One to monitor.
