Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is drawing ever nearer and we’re profiling all 20 Premier League teams before the season starts.

After weighing up what Aston Villa players had to offer, we continue our team-by-team guides with Arsenal.

You can check out our Nottingham Forest, Fulham and Bournemouth analysis in our Promoted series (articles that will be refreshed before the big kick-off).

Data in this article comes from our Premium Members Area, which you can access with a discounted subscription for as little as £2.49 a month today.

LAST SEASON: ATTACK

Goals scored616th

Shots on target1944th

Expected goals (xG)69.164th

Arsenal were Champions League material for much of 2021/22 when it came to goal threat but there is a sense that there is still more to come: they had the worst xG delta (-8.16) and second-worst goal conversion (10.4%) of any side who finished in the top half last season.

Perhaps the acquisition of Gabriel Jesus (£8.0m) can help remedy that wastefulness. He’s had a flying start to life at Arsenal in pre-season, although it should be noted that he too has a bit of a profligate track record.

LAST SEASON: DEFENCE

Wobbly defensive periods bookended last season, with no clean sheets arriving in the opening three Gameweeks or from Gameweeks 31-38.

In between, Arsenal racked up an impressive 13 shut-outs in 25 matches.

Keeping together a settled back four was one contributing factor: Takehiro Tomiyasu (£4.5m), Ben White (£4.5m) and Gabriel Magalhaes (£5.0m) started every fixture together from Gameweeks 4-18, with eight clean sheets arriving in this period alone. It was no coincidence that Arsenal’s defensive numbers worsened when Tomiyasu’s fitness issues began earlier this year.

But Aaron Ramsdale‘s (£5.0m) displays were also worthy of note. Earning rave reviews after his initial debut, he had fallen out of form somewhat by the time we reached the end of 2021/22.

Gameweek 4-24+5.20 78.9%
Gameweek 25-38-4.80 57.7%

OPENING FIXTURES

The best budget FPL defenders for 2022/23 5

Arsenal are actually top of our Season Ticker for fixture difficulty in the first eight Gameweeks, meeting only one of last season’s top seven in that time – and even that is a Manchester United side who struggled for clean sheets in 2021/22. Even with the strides made in pre-season under Erik ten Hag, question marks remain about their defence.

Two newly-promoted outfits – Bournemouth and Fulham – come in Gameweek 3 and 4, while two of the leakier defences of last season, Leicester and Everton, visit the Emirates.

Arteta’s side will be in UEFA Europa League action this season, however, which means they will have to get used to a demanding Thursday-Sunday turnaround between matches. That competition starts after Gameweek 6.

The September international break may be a time to reassess investment in the Gunners, as all of last season’s top four have to be met in Gameweeks 9-15.

With Pep roulette in mind, can you rank from most to least minutes played in first 6 GWs?
    A-Foden
    B-Mahrez
    C-Grealish
    D-Haaland

Just don't do it to yourself. Make sure you have Cancelo and you should be fine

I'm going to go with Mahrez...his points return when he plays is worth the punt and it's an easy move to Foden / Grealish or any of the 8.0's if it all goes horribly wrong.

Lol foden over Mahrez. Look at city's last 10 games sterling/Mahrez RW grealish/foden LW.
MAHREZ is the most nailed of all those 4, Haaland gonna have a niggle every couple of games

I’m going with Mahrez probably but there’s no point trying to convince ourselves he’s nailed. The question is can he be worth it despite that

      interesting

B for now. But if James is confirmed as wing back in a 3-5-2 (probably 3-4-3 too) then get him anyway, irrelevant of how dysfunctional CHE may seem

Hmmm. M & J is the nailed option but I just don't fancy a raft of Chelsea clean sheets to start.

The need to sort themselves out a bit and can't see that happening before the season starts.

Other options maybe? Could be an area to save some money here. James to a 5m and either keep Mendy or go for a 4.5m.

      1/1.5m to play with...

Realistically, are Neto or Bailey going to score more points than say Gabriel, Trippier, Cash, Zinchenko, Perisic? I think I’d rather a set and forget defender over a midfielder who may have good spells, could be wrong

Gotta agree especially at the start of a new season all this 5 at the back talk and me with a 5, 5 and a 4.5 starting defence in a 3 5 2

    2. lugs

well those places need to be filled regardless, 4.5 def + 5.5 mid can easily outscore the reverse

It's a good point. I'd have to play back 5 though which I'm somewhat against

Over the season you're probably right but both have a good chance at the start with great fixtures and confidence from pre-season to outscore these defenders, especially as many defences take a few weeks to get in gear usually. They might disappoint but the price is so low it's worth trying.

    How’s this looking?

    Sanchez Steele
    TAA Robertson Cancelo Zinchenko Williams
    Salah Bowen Martinelli Bailey Andreas
    Halland Jesus Plage

    Question marks for me:

Bowen or a different 8m mid?
    Halland or Kane?

I like it. Bowen fixtures not as good as saka for example, although you'd have to lose zinchenko for that.

Kane for me at the min. Haaland in a few weeks

I think Bowen is great pick & H or K is the million dollar question.

If Haaland looks good next week & is on to start the season then that could change my mind from Kane who I am currently on

        I will for one!

Havertz woefully underperformed upfront last year, soo many games he didn't even turn up for. Assuming there's no transfer movement either way, there's still Werner and Broja lurking.

Which is a fair point but you're then looking at, what, 2400 total next year?

I don't see him being prolific, isn't on set pieces. He feels like a slightly glorified Firmino.

          Exactly

Antonio was great for about 3 weeks last season and the Project Restart with hat-trick v NOR (may have been a mid 19-20)

Martial has only ever one decent season. 19-20... as a mid

      Tip 1- change your name

Tip 2- clarify which Bruno you have, assuming it's Newcastle?

Tip 3- rotating keepers is a bit of a nightmare as they haul in the tougher fixtures you would bench them in

Team A - you have no MCI attack.
Team B - wouldn't want Grealish. Can't you downgrade Robbo & upgrade Grealish > Mahrez?

Yeah pretty much haha. I prefer the A team but it worries me only having Neco on the bench and no strikers in reserve if Jesus gets injured. Tbh any City midfielder worries me currently - I think it could be Foden and Grealish’s year, but it’s anyones guess with Pep.

How long is Jota out for? Let's face it, when he's fit and, assuming Darwin Nunez is getting something in the way of starts, then Diaz is getting a lot of rotation

    I've not even mentioned Firmino

Klopp altered his formation to get 4 of his attackers in previously right?

Thiago was too strong last season, Fabinho is the best, Hendo the C, and Elliot is starting to impress.
My guess is, he'll stick with 433, he has Keita, Jones et al to rotate that mid 3 aswell

Agreed. And it's not like you can avoid/wait and see, cos this is going to be going on all season. We all better hope Carvalho doesn't start impressing, cos then there's even more cause for concern

Not concerned by Diaz starting at all.

Will get the odd rest, yes, but he’ll be starting more often than not.

You're creating headaches for yourself if another Liv player (eg.Darwin) becomes essential

Whilst you're right, I dont think I'd be able to facilitate getting a Darwin in vs the other attackers I've got.

Diaz is the one I'd be blocking myself from but there are plenty of other 8 mils.

Which £8m midfielder will score more that the Liverpool wing backs?

        1. Tomerick

          3 years, 11 months ago

          1. It doesn’t necessarily need to be a choice between Liverpool wing backs and 8m mids.

          2. You can flip that on it’s head quite easily and ask which 4.5m mids or fwds will outscore a 4.5m defender.

          1. All de Gea no iDier
            • 7 Years

If you scarifice a premium defender in order to fund a more expensive MID, who at £8m will bring in the points TAA does at £0.5m cheaper?

            1. Tomerick
              • 11 Years
              3 years, 11 months ago

You still have to fill the mid slot with someone.

TAA + 4.5 mid potentially loses out to the right 4.5 Def +8m mid. It is not a straight comparison between TAA and 8m mids.

Also my point stands. You can very easily have TAA and, in my case two 8m mids.

Grealish isn't anywhere near as good as Son.
      I don't really rate Grealish at all. Certainly ain't a £100m player.
