Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is drawing ever nearer and we’re profiling all 20 Premier League teams before the season starts.

After weighing up what Aston Villa players had to offer, we continue our team-by-team guides with Arsenal.

You can check out our Nottingham Forest, Fulham and Bournemouth analysis in our Promoted series (articles that will be refreshed before the big kick-off).

Data in this article comes from our Premium Members Area, which you can access with a discounted subscription for as little as £2.49 a month today.

Arsenal were Champions League material for much of 2021/22 when it came to goal threat but there is a sense that there is still more to come: they had the worst xG delta (-8.16) and second-worst goal conversion (10.4%) of any side who finished in the top half last season.

Perhaps the acquisition of Gabriel Jesus (£8.0m) can help remedy that wastefulness. He’s had a flying start to life at Arsenal in pre-season, although it should be noted that he too has a bit of a profligate track record.

Wobbly defensive periods bookended last season, with no clean sheets arriving in the opening three Gameweeks or from Gameweeks 31-38.

In between, Arsenal racked up an impressive 13 shut-outs in 25 matches.

Keeping together a settled back four was one contributing factor: Takehiro Tomiyasu (£4.5m), Ben White (£4.5m) and Gabriel Magalhaes (£5.0m) started every fixture together from Gameweeks 4-18, with eight clean sheets arriving in this period alone. It was no coincidence that Arsenal’s defensive numbers worsened when Tomiyasu’s fitness issues began earlier this year.

But Aaron Ramsdale‘s (£5.0m) displays were also worthy of note. Earning rave reviews after his initial debut, he had fallen out of form somewhat by the time we reached the end of 2021/22.

OPENING FIXTURES

The best budget FPL defenders for 2022/23 5

Arsenal are actually top of our Season Ticker for fixture difficulty in the first eight Gameweeks, meeting only one of last season’s top seven in that time – and even that is a Manchester United side who struggled for clean sheets in 2021/22. Even with the strides made in pre-season under Erik ten Hag, question marks remain about their defence.

Two newly-promoted outfits – Bournemouth and Fulham – come in Gameweek 3 and 4, while two of the leakier defences of last season, Leicester and Everton, visit the Emirates.

Arteta’s side will be in UEFA Europa League action this season, however, which means they will have to get used to a demanding Thursday-Sunday turnaround between matches. That competition starts after Gameweek 6.

The September international break may be a time to reassess investment in the Gunners, as all of last season’s top four have to be met in Gameweeks 9-15.

Nailed until Tomi is fit (White may then move from RB to CB). Worth the punt because of the Ramsdale upgrade imo as the worst outcome is N.Williams subs in for him.

slightly tongue in cheek. They're both absolutely nailed as we know, but VVD got more mins (off memory) than Alisson last season

Thanks - I think I'm warming to going with Kulu given Conte's comments. (Looks as if Richarlison will provide cover for Son and Kane mostly)

Son is 30 and Kane is about to turn 29. I think Kulu's minutes are probably as safe as any, even more so if Moura is utilised at RB meaning even less competition for his spot.

Kane and KDB as both are fully fit and proven in the Premier League. As good as Haaland is it's always a risk with a player in a new league and not sure he's 100% fit yet.

      Thanks for all the replies...

My thoughts are that there isn't much between Kane and Son but KDB is proven in the PL and will get even more assists with Haaland playing. I do have concerns that Haaland will come off early in quite a few games although he will likely only do so when City have already scored a few.

The same as Kroky I'm thinking about holding off on the decision by having the Spurs pair for the opening game and booking in a transfer for my week 2 captain.

Been sat here thinking, and with there being so many players i'd love in my team, along with a number of wait and sees. Is anyone considering starting the season with any money ITB?

For eg. If left 1mill in the bank, wait and see's could be very easy to jump on...

    Jesus - Darwin
for the NO Salah guys ...SON/KDB - Salah
    8mill midfield - bowen
If starting with Bailey an easy way out if it's a trap...

    Thoughts?

4.5 striker will be 3rd on my bench.

Better to have Forss (still at Brentford) or Gayle (sent on loan) to avoid price drops? Im assuming Gayle as he will be locked out now on FPL right?

    1. Ser Davos
      • 10 Years

that's a point actually even with the 5 sub rule

and the 5 subs should mean you don't go three deep on your bench

      1. Andy_Social
        • 13 Years
        3 years, 4 months ago

I've got 2 active subs and I still like my 3rd to have a chance of minutes. I've been stung by Pep resting my 3 cityzens before, and i like to play the fixtures without making too many transfers. Regarding that 3rd striker, I'd still plump for Greenwood for possible minutes, or alternatively Archer or Plange as lesser-owned.

Feeling pretty happy with this - only downside is triple City defence which limits ability to move Kane to Haaland, but not sure there are any 5.0 defenders that I prefer for the first 5 GWs.

Trippier for me at 5m despite the city and Liverpool fixture's in the first 5 is a steal for me, being on set pieces and Newcastle have definitely tightened their defence, really rate him at 5mill.

Rate the team just don't rate the triple city defence, if you need to jump on Haaland KDB you'll be wildcarding alot earlier then you need to be. I'd honestly just move walker to trippier and start with the 2, at least you're not blocked off in that case.

      Nice

      Walker to Botman
      4.5 to Bailey

Gives better options & a legitimate 22nd man & option to get Haaland if he goes ballistic

Not keen on Botman or Bailey and I’m ok with a very light bench for the first handful of GWs

      Yeah, like it

I think for all the hype for Haaland/Kane, which is justified, the scoring system and assurance of fitness for KDB/Son funnels us to their bracket

Is Grealish now a good FPL option at 7.0?

I think he will start for Man City based on preseason performance in a front three like so:

    Grealish Haaland Mahrez

I would prefer, as a city fan, for foden to be nailing the LW spot but as he's not been training with the main tour team I can't see how Pep would start him over Grealish, at least to begin with.

If he becomes nailed then yes he's a great choice, always does his best attacking work playing off a main striker

I only had Chilwell/James. Was always unsure about their defense and team in general tbh. And after what Tuchel said about them not being 100% and so on. They are a wait and see for me.

Im happy to stick with 1 of James or Chilwell. We've had question marks over their defence from the start of pre-season so not sure why a 4-0 drubbing is making people panic on something they already knew. The Chilwell / James picks are great for attacking intent and at 6m i still think they're incredibly good value

        bit different.

Personally don't see value in 'expensive' keepers, ederson probably the best shout in that category though.

Back 4 is decent maybe Gabriel could be a cheaper defender if needs be

I like Salah and Rashford, not convinced with Neto as a starting mid I'd prefer to have a fifth defender and have Neto as first on bench. Bowen is a bit marmite at the minute due to price and his first fixture.

Can't argue with Kane and Jesus, assuming Kane can be swapped for Haaland if needed

          Yup my last team was
Diaz, Coutinho and James over Saka Bailey and Robbo

Sanchez > Raya is also in my thoughts

I think you should reinvest some cash in your team!

        1.0itb is a little excessive I think.

If you want two Liverpool defenders then do Robbo --> VVD. Personally, I'd just stick with Trent and then Robbo can become James/Chilwell/Perisic or 5.0 defender.

This would allow you to upgrade your lacking midfield.

I have Bailey as first sub as I can't see him starting but he should get regular cameos, especially with 5 sub rules

      Thoughts on this, 0.5itb

      Martinez
      Trent Cancelo Chilwell Perisic White
      Salah (c) KDB Rashford Martinelli
      Jesus

      Meslier Bailey Greenwood Plange

Slightly differntial on the keeper, but with villa fixtures and improved defence I'm surprised he's been overlooked.

Whats happening with Leicester's front line? I can't see what subs they were using or whether they've got 2 up front?

One of Daka / Iheanacho could be great this year especially with Vardy's age and if they play 2 up top.

I prefer Bailey as a budget midfield pick (0.5 cheaper than Neto) although he is less nailed. I'm presuming you are either playing Bailey or Neto and Longstaff or Andreas are first on bench

Who is the better arsenal defender out of:

      A...gabriel
      B....zinchenko

Zinchenko filled in for Tierney last night. If he ends up in midfield, not sure if he is in an holding role and therefore a worse fpl asset - or has licence to get forward. Thanks

rlly depends whether zinc will keep his spot at lb. played rlly high against Chelsea and will definitely get some g + a, just needs to keep out tierney

hard to say whether he'll get put into midfield. xhaka and partey seems like a pretty solid partnership, xhaka will probably get a red or two tho
