Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is drawing ever nearer and we’re profiling all 20 Premier League teams before the season starts.

After weighing up what Aston Villa players had to offer, we continue our team-by-team guides with Arsenal.

You can check out our Nottingham Forest, Fulham and Bournemouth analysis in our Promoted series (articles that will be refreshed before the big kick-off).

Data in this article comes from our Premium Members Area, which you can access with a discounted subscription for as little as £2.49 a month today.

LAST SEASON: ATTACK

Goals scored616th

Expected goals (xG)69.164th

Arsenal were Champions League material for much of 2021/22 when it came to goal threat but there is a sense that there is still more to come: they had the worst xG delta (-8.16) and second-worst goal conversion (10.4%) of any side who finished in the top half last season.

Perhaps the acquisition of Gabriel Jesus (£8.0m) can help remedy that wastefulness. He’s had a flying start to life at Arsenal in pre-season, although it should be noted that he too has a bit of a profligate track record.

LAST SEASON: DEFENCE

Wobbly defensive periods bookended last season, with no clean sheets arriving in the opening three Gameweeks or from Gameweeks 31-38.

In between, Arsenal racked up an impressive 13 shut-outs in 25 matches.

Keeping together a settled back four was one contributing factor: Takehiro Tomiyasu (£4.5m), Ben White (£4.5m) and Gabriel Magalhaes (£5.0m) started every fixture together from Gameweeks 4-18, with eight clean sheets arriving in this period alone. It was no coincidence that Arsenal’s defensive numbers worsened when Tomiyasu’s fitness issues began earlier this year.

But Aaron Ramsdale‘s (£5.0m) displays were also worthy of note. Earning rave reviews after his initial debut, he had fallen out of form somewhat by the time we reached the end of 2021/22.

Gameweek 25-38-4.80 57.7%

OPENING FIXTURES

The best budget FPL defenders for 2022/23 5

Arsenal are actually top of our Season Ticker for fixture difficulty in the first eight Gameweeks, meeting only one of last season’s top seven in that time – and even that is a Manchester United side who struggled for clean sheets in 2021/22. Even with the strides made in pre-season under Erik ten Hag, question marks remain about their defence.

Two newly-promoted outfits – Bournemouth and Fulham – come in Gameweek 3 and 4, while two of the leakier defences of last season, Leicester and Everton, visit the Emirates.

Arteta’s side will be in UEFA Europa League action this season, however, which means they will have to get used to a demanding Thursday-Sunday turnaround between matches. That competition starts after Gameweek 6.

The September international break may be a time to reassess investment in the Gunners, as all of last season’s top four have to be met in Gameweeks 9-15.

This narrative that arsenal don't like him is nonsense. He had an incredible loan spell and Arteta has been waxing lyrical about him pre season. He played the entire game yesterday.

However that said he is still a bit of a rotation risk when Tomiyasu comes back as White and he will be competing for that RCB spot

He had incredible loan spell season before and they loaned him again. He can't play because they spent so much money on White who is nothing better than Sali.

He was and still is incredibly young. How many other Premier League teams have a 20yr old CB? The loan was the absolute best thing for his development rather than playing the odd cup game last season, especially with no Europe. Now he's ready to compete for a place in the team.

That's a nonsense press narrative to generate clicks.

Truth is much more boring (young player goes on loan to develop).

This season Arsenal are going to have a deeper squad so you can expect more rotation in general so they don't run players into the ground.

Most Arsenal fans would tell you they even want another player in Saka's position so he doesn't get broken or become a single point of failure playing every minute.

Same applies to CB as any other position.

For Utd, there’s so much changed in their circumstances ie new manager and potentially CR7’s departure. This renders last season less relevant.

I think so. Certainly a defensive improvement & better consistency with no Europe. Maddi/Vardy/Barnes is so destructive, and Tielemans likely to stay now(?), but I guess it will depend a little on whether Daka/Nacho can step as Vardy will obviously miss some stretches.

          What I think.

Newcastle are being underestimated. They showed last season they can compete and Pope, Botman, Trippier and Wilson (who was injured) are significant upgrades. Their big advantage is no European football. Putting out a settled side will let them get rhythm.

Chelsea are in disarray. Every part of their team has suffered a downgrade since last season. Koulibaly is not an upgrade on Rudiger and Sterling is not the finisher they need.

Fair points, personally think Newcastle are a bit overhyped for this season for me the squad isn't quite ready to push a Chelsea out, but they're gonna be serious threats to everyone in the years to come

For me, Newcastle should come in a fairly safe 8th / 9th. Not sure the attack is ready to compete with Chelsea but I could see them maybe pipping Chelsea in the CS stakes

Where does Maddison rank in the 8.0? I think he can compete with Saka/Diaz and even top Mount, and yet not in many teams

He has not left my team since day 1.

Depends how much you predict Barnes and others eat into his returns. Good player, but his goal involvement for Leicester needs to be very high (like Bowen for West Ham) to justify the increased price IMO.

he hasn't left any of my drafts, i'd put him ahead of Diaz/Mount and any City mid who are mostly a no go for me, not much in it between him Bowen & Saka though imo

I just think you have money tied up in the likes of Undav, Gabriel, Alison and Doherty that might be a transfer waiting to happen.

I have Tripp for wk 1. Might keep him on WC in wk 2.

I’m picking a 5.0 defender as cucurella placeholder
        What do you suggest?

Is Romero I good shout, as other Spurs defenders seem to be rotation risks.

Deciding on another 5M defender spot with the possibility of Zinc.

    Thanks

He's the only Spurs defender I'd consider. But the Spurs/Chelsea situations have actually pushed me to 3 at the back now (Trent/Cancelo/Trippier)

        3-5-2?

Yep - running out of defensive options I like! Probably just until 1st WC them I'd likely be on 4 atb again if Chelsea improve, a reliable Spurs WB emerges, or Konate/Cucurella(City) nail down a spot

Get both (below) and have good cover on the bench.

The Grealish/Mahrez draft. Contingent on the short-term with Foden not being there for preseason. Options can emerge later to switch to as well.

    Mendy - 4.0
    Robertson - James - Trippier - White - N. Williams
    Salah (C) - Mahrez - Grealish - Rashford - Martinelli
    Jesus - Kane - 4.5

Best ‘1 Premium’ team?! What do you think?!

    Ederson
    TAA - Cancelo - James - Robertson - Perisic
    Salah (c) - Mahrez - Mount - Martinelli
    Jesus

    (Gazzaniga - Bailey - Greenwood - Taylor)

0.5m left in the bank (to cover price rises)

    - Perisic can be upgraded to Chilwell with the 0.5m if he’s not fit in time
    - Flexibility to move Mount or Mahrez on to any of the other 8m mids

    Any changes anyone would make?!

      Very nice.

I had a little tinker with a single premium draft this morning and it has very little weaknesses.

The FOMO of no Kane/Halland will be tough to resist though.

        Thanks mate!

Yeah I agree - you can get so much quality & value in EVERY player in the team (and a good first bench option just in case)

But yes I agree, Haaland/Kane (and Son/KDB) will be tough to watch each week…

But the sacrifice, to upgrade 3 or 4 players (who can all do nearly as well as the big hitters), is just about worth it I think - for balance!
