Most teams have completed their pre-season tours around the globe and as Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers, we are always looking to gain whatever information we can from these warm-up matches.

The “it’s only pre-season” phrase is thrown about a lot so it is often difficult to know how much we can really discern from these games.

Indeed, there’s this excellent analysis done by the Opta Analyst account that shows that there is very little correlation between a team’s pre-season results and their form in the first 10 league matches.

I completely agree with what one Twitter user said in one of the replies: goals/assists/clean sheets are largely irrelevant but minutes, formation and fitness is what I think we can take from these games.

With that in mind, these are my thoughts so far…

Chelsea

As a Chelsea fan, it is only fair that I start by talking about the Blues first. It was always going to be a summer of transition after losing so many key players and there also being changes in the boardroom. We have an extremely bloated squad, full of players who are looking to leave but who nobody wants. It’s also the first time this group of players has had a manager for an extended period, so I don’t know if maybe they are just used to the constant shock factor that a change in head coach brings?

Either way, I know I said we shouldn’t read too much into the goal/clean sheet numbers but the performances in the games I watched were very poor and disjointed. Thomas Tuchel does not sound like a happy man and I am inclined to ignore the Blues’ assets early doors. Reece James (£6.0m) will likely be playing right centre-back until we get some reinforcements and Ben Chilwell (£6.0m) is nowhere near sharpness yet.

Manchester United

I blame my pod partner and fellow Pro Pundit Lateriser for this: I am quite bullish on United after what I have seen. Again, I am not reading too much into the goals they scored against Liverpool’s third-string team or Crystal Palace’s B team. I am looking at the patterns of play and the movement off the ball, and this team is completely unrecognisable. The manager let David de Gea (£5.0m) know in no uncertain terms how he wants to play and Erik ten Hag seems to me a manager with a clear philosophy, something Manchester United have lacked in the last decade.

Their assets are definitely under-priced after their disastrous 2021/22 campaign and I am undecided still who to go for between Marcus Rashford (£6.5m) and Anthony Martial (£7.0m). The elephant in the room obviously is Cristiano Ronaldo (£10.5m): he is still a Manchester United player at the time of writing and might be when the season kicks off but I think he will be gone by the end of the transfer window. However, it does raise some concern, as Martial could easily take Rashford’s spot on the left. Jadon Sancho (£7.5m), then, seems to be the most ‘stable’ of the lot.

FPL pre-season lessons:

Arsenal

The Gunners have had a great transfer window and I am very bullish about Gabriel Jesus’ (£8.0m) prospects this season. I really rate the player and breaking free from the shackles of a Pep Guardiola system should give him a lot more freedom. He has also already spoken about how he wants to add more goals to his game.

Along with Mohamed Salah (£13.0m), Joao Cancelo (£7.0m) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m), Jesus is one of the few locks in my FPL side. I will likely double up on the Arsenal attack, keeping the fixtures in mind, but who I go for between Gabriel Martinelli (£6.0m) and Bukayo Saka (£8.0m) will probably be a late decision.

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR

Antonio Conte has transformed Tottenham Hotspur into a formidable outfit and their attacking numbers after his appointment were up there with the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool. I really want to invest in one of their wing-backs but the situation is a bit murky: Matt Doherty (£5.0m) was the only player not to come off the bench in their last pre-season game and Ivan Perisic (£5.5m) looks like he still needs to build some fitness. I am not convinced about the viability of a three-premium setup and really want to include at least one of their attackers, so it might have to be at Erling Haaland’s (£11.5m) expense.

ZOPHAR’S CURRENT FPL DRAFT

I will be back again next week with my thoughts after the final pre-season games and the Community Shield.

In the meantime, we have been churning out content over at the FPL Wire Youtube channel. We have covered the promoted teams, defenders and midfielders so far, with defenders to come later this week.

My dilemma: 3x 8.0 mids + back at the back w/ one premium (Salah) or threemium with Salah, Son and Kane. Help is needed!

I'd prefer 1 premium Salah perma captain, instead of 3 premiums

Don't think 3 premium is a great idea to start the season imo. When it's clearer which budget enablers are performing then maybe then with an early wildcard. Good luck regardless

Problem with Salah, Son and Kane (as much as I love it)

Is that you're going to likely need transfers shifting Neto/Bailey etc. but you're already using up a transfer on Spud to Citeh

Before you know you're backed up with fires to kill

Additionally, we're going to have to just suck up FOMO. It seems a fundamental part of the game. Even if you had 4 of the 5 premiums, you're still missing out on one of them plus all the mid-price value elsewhere

Ride or die with Salah at captain and fill the squad with value heavy hitters.

Can only see TAA as 100% essential, so ended with this:

    Mendy 4.0

    TAA James Zinchenko Dalot (Patterson)

    KDB Diaz Mount Rashford (Andreas)

    Kane Jesus (Mateta)

Any major issues outside of being Non-Salah?

Don’t think TAA essential as no one will captain him. The essentials are for players which are captained and you don’t even own them and they score heavy. Like Salah. Obvs going wo Salah could be a great differential or rank killer. TAA not so much.

      Interesting one.

He's never really looked good enough for the PL, as much as he works hard. Improved under Howe though and he;s having an excellent pre-season (scored 5 or 6 goals I think it is). But i'd be wary of reading too much into pre-season form.

We're still looking for another wide player which would push Almiron down the order. If we don't bring anyone in though, he could get plenty of game time and at £5m, would be decent value.

I'm currently going with Bruno but my head is starting to overrule my heart and getting more tempted to downgrade Bruno to Neto and save the £0.5m.

He was given a lot of licence to get forward last season, so will depend if he plays the same role this season or not.

Don;t get drawn in by Almiron's pre-season stats.

If we don't sign another winger / attacker, then he might well get plenty of minutes but really not convinced he'll get many goals / assists.

I have both but Diaz first.

Almiron could be worth a punt. 5.0m is nothing to pay and he has two decent first fixtures. You can't really be a trap if you're a 5.0m mid imo.

Teams ranked by FPL price for top ten players.
I have copied below the value of the teams when looking at their 10 most expensive players. There are some teams I feel are undervalued based on this metric. Most notably Arsenal, Newcastle and Palace. Equally there are teams that are overpriced such as Leeds and possibly Leicester.

    1) MCI - 80.5
    2) LIV - 79.5
    3) TOT - 73.5
    4) CHE - 70
    5) MUN - 69
    6) LEI - 63.5
    7) ARS - 63
    8) WHU - 60.5
    9) LEE - 60
    10) AST - 59
    11) NEW - 57.5
    12) BRI - 56.5
    13) EVE - 56
    14) WOL - 56
    15) SOU - 55.5
    16) BRE - 55
    17) CRY - 55
    18) BOU - 54
    19) FUL - 53.5
    20) NFO - 52.5

It is more about team strength than individual picks. Over a season though the best scoring players play for the best performing teams. FPL is a game of picking individuals and but we can overlook the effect that the team has on individuals.
For the most part I think this table will closely reflect the PL table at the end of the season but they will have got some teams underpriced and players in those teams will score high in value metrics.

        1. Andy_Social
          • 13 Years

You can see some anomalies there which do illuminate underpriced teams such as Palace, Arsenal and maybe Newcastle. And you're right in that it indicates Leeds' assets are overpriced. But the insight is still limited; Brighton will finish above Fulham, but Mitrovic can still outscore any individual Brighton player.

Ultimately it tells us it tells us something we already know, who the best teams are and there is not much among the others. It did help me rethink about Newcastle assets and I am sure Arsenal are going to out perform this and therefore there is some big value their.

Interesting, even if I don't know what to do with the data.
I agree with your thoughts - I've loaded up on City and Liverpool, followed by Arsenal for their fixtures, and Spurs.
I can't say if Chelsea and United are overpriced - I'm omitting them for the start to see how they get on.

Nice video about notable things from Arsenal's preseason. The Different Knock is a good channel if you're interested in Arsenal things.
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ooMcrr7-LRw

      Here's a brief summary

      1. Marquinhos is one to watch. Wouldn't look out of place coming on late in a game, with his pressing, physicality and natural skill & positioning

      2. The young players look bigger and stronger, particularly Nketiah, Patino, Saka & Odegaard. Nketiah isn't just a fox in the box anymore, but can now be more of a facilitator.

      3. Jesus looks very good, in particular his movement, touch and using his body

      4. New signings are all versatile. Systems/formations are changing a lot in pre-season and this could be carried into in-game scenarios

      5. Death of Maria Petri, Arsenal supporter

Saka really needed to bulk up. He’d get rattled in a game and go missing.

      Hows this threemium?

      Ederson
      TAA Dias Gabriel Dalot Nico
      Salah Son Neto
      Kane Jesus

      4.0 Andreas Dasilva Gayle

Son/Kane in as I really fancy them GW1. Allows me to move to KDB/Haaland if I have to for GW2.
Nico can rotate with Andreas and Dasilva I’m hoping for starts in that Eriksen position now he is over his injury problems.

Been on this for ages now, cant see much changing.

          The forward pricing is crackers

at least two years ago we had a promoted striker at 5.5 and Kane at 10.5. All reasonable stuff

Che Adams at 6.5? Who is coming up with this stuff?

Hmm I guess I agree actually that I dont really see myself jumping off to any of the 7-7.5 forwards. But I do like having the 2nd striker spot & potentially going up to Darwin if he's starting regularly or down to Johnson

I think he's a good option to start with given thier fixtures. He you want to move on it's easy enough to turn that forward 8.0 spot into a midfield one with a transfer or two.

My GW 1 team on which I still have some small remarks (see below)

      MESLIER
      TAA - CANCELO - ROBERTSON - GABRIEL*
      SALAH - RASHFORD* - MARTINELLI* - NETO
      KANE - JESUS

      b: klaesson, neco, greenwood, andreas

#1: Gabriel could be either Jonny or Trippier.
#2: Rash en Martinelli could be Saka and another 6M (cuz still got 1.5M itb)
#3: since I still got 1.5 ITB I could improve some small things maybe.

In isolation, Diaz. But going for Diaz also likely rules you out of Robertson. So for me, it's a case of Robertson + 8m mid (not Diaz) or Diaz + any other defender (not Roberston).

I'd have more confidence of going say Diaz + James/Chilwell if Chelsea weren't so up in the air.

I'd get back on Salah. Maybe it's just fear but if Salah goes mad you'll have trouble getting him in without a wildcard. His fixtures are great to start too. I think there is validity to not going Salah but I haven't seen a team where I think it's worth it and this is not exception sorry to say.

      Hi All,

New here and was hoping to get some feedback on my team - have been thinking about just being different than the standard premium mids/strikers as I think it enables a more balanced team. It certainly is a risk but I'm going with guaranteed starters who will all hopefully have good seasons than relying on stars like Salah, Haaland, Kane, Son etc.

      My starting XI
      GK - Ramsdale
DEF - TAA, Cancelo, Reece James
MID - Saka, Kulusevski, Luiz Diaz, James Maddison
      ATT - Vardy, Jesus, Havertz

Subs - Ricardo Pereira, Andreas Pereira, Neco Williams and Asmir Begovic

I think Leicester are going to surprise a lot of people this season given no Europa - Vardy, Madisson and Pereria are my picks. Arsenal look very good so have gone heavy in Jesus, Saka and Ramsdale. Chelsea will surprise folks despite pre-season so have gone for James and Havertz (who I think will have a breakout season!). Diaz and Kulusevski have had the perfect platform by having the 2nd half of the season as as taster and are nailed on starters that can surprise the bigger bets of Son, Kane, Salah. TAA and Cancelo - well enough said and had to stick with them for their attacking and defensive returns.

Bench wise, I expect to use Ricardo Pereira for any home games but unsure who to drop as I have a strong starting XI. Neco and Andreas provide good value at 4 & 4.5m respectively while Begovic is the only non-starter than will remain on my bench unless I need to move out Ramsdale - my intention is to keep him for the season.

I'd be grateful for your thoughts!

It's a non premium team so very balanced, but just my worry is if the premiums click, all of a sudden your rank takes a big hit!! My suggestion, at least one or 2 premiums...as far as non premium teams go this is solid!!

Thank you, that makes sense - I've got to get back to the drawing board to see if I can squeeze a few premiums. And on the talk of premiums, the only players I'm considering are Salah, Kane and Son. I personally don't think the new boys like Haaland, Darwin etc., are worth their price tag especially given it takes a bit to adapt to the PL. Maybe there is a case for me to go Kane instead of Vardy and drop Kulu for someone like a Bailey or Gordon.

You have to add Haaland into the mix, he averages a goal every 80 to 85 minutes...many would argue about the leagues he has played in, but his record is similar in CL as well, and he is now at a tougher league, but in a team that creates so many chances.... personally I think that evens it out

In almost all past seasons, a combination of Salah + Neto outperforms something like Diaz + Havertz because of captaincy. You want to have at least a few premium captain choices and this team just doesn't have that.

You will be able to unearth good value budget mids as the season goes on. Just because none appear to be correct now doesn't mean that they won't emerge. It's why a strategy with at least two of Salah, Kane, Haaland, Son is a much safer and imo better way to play the game.

        1. fplrook
          • 3 Years
          3 years, 8 months ago

Makes sense Camzy, that's the worry - I might need to try and see if I can rejig. The only concern is the differential then as I personally think 80% of the teams have two or three premiums of the likes of Salah, Kane, Son, KDB, Haaland..

The risk is that if these big boys go on a big run especially being a captain, then it could crucify the differentials. On the other hand, if they don't a lot of teams will be left behind.

      3. The Mentaculus
        • 4 Years

Great picks, but the glaring issue is captaincy. I don't have a problem captaining Vardy or mid-price mids occasionally, but you will be playing a very high variance game by going against Salah/Son/Haaland etc week after week, so I would recommend getting at least one of them. Maybe look through the 1st 8GW or so & think about who the best captains would be for each week & how they compare with this existing team?

        1. fplrook
          • 3 Years

Thank you, great advise - back to the drawing board for me! I'd like to get Kane on. Wondering if Salah at 13m is worth the punt or two good price midfielders. Good point on captaincy and I think Kane if being the main stayer could captain 2/3rd's of the season with all home games and most away games with a case for others like Jesus taking on the armband.

I agree with you on Chelsea, they seem a bit ruffled - so maybe less of a punt if I swapped Havertz out for a cheaper striker and bring someone heavy in mid. The thing is i don't want to go Spurs heavy in Son and Kane, whilst Salah is too expensive. KDB is an option too that I'm considering.

            • 4 Years

The flipside is that these premiums are only good value when you captain them. I think maybe a 1 premium setup might suit your apparent style. So, for example, if you're happy to captain Vardy in GW 1 & 3, maybe consider Haaland ot KDB who have more favourable home games in GWs 2, 4 & 5?

        Welcome to the site!

I too am quite hopeful of Leicester. They are generally fast starters and I think the fixtures are decent. Rogers seemed to stumble on his best XI at the end of last season and with key players fit and no Europa, they could be good early doors. I guess that is both a strength and weakness in your team: very dependent on Leicester doing well. If they do struggle to fit their scoring boots, you are almost certainly looking at a red arrow with no Son/Kane, Salah or City attackers.

I've looked at trying to fit in Vardy but Jesus being 1.5mil cheaper, it's just too difficult not to go with the Arsenal man.

Similarly, I'm not too keen on Havertz: Chelsea don't look very settled and Tuchel's comments in pre-season don't inspire confidence. Havertz may well have a breakout season but he's had 2 seasons in PL now and hasn't really shown himself to be a real goalscorer yet. I think he's a bit expensive and I'd rather downgrade him to fodder to upgrade someone else to a premium like Salah.

Thanks Collie - agreed on Leicester and very good point on being too reliant on them. I think this year I want to play on a few teams I back with guaranteed starters. I think Arsenal, Spurs and Leicester are teams to watch for varying reasons whilst Liverpool, CIty will still be the top teams. Chelsea and Man Utd are a bit of a wait and watch. And for those reasons, I'm tempted to think of 2-3 players from each of Arsenal, Spurs and Leicester and a couple of players from Liverpool/City with the odd Chelsea/Utd player.

There was a team like this in my mini league 5-6 years ago and they absolutely smashed it. Basically they kept the top players the whole season and then played the fixtures with cheap defenders and it always came good for them. I wouldn't but as a strategy I've seen it work.

That's the point I've seen it too funnily, only rotation was one of the premiums and gk/defenders...it worked wonders for they few that did it

I tried it one year earlier on in my fpl 'career' and it did okay but I made some mistakes and I wasn't as knowlegable about teams/players. I still think it takes a lot of patience and a bit of luck for it to come off as the defenders from these teams are inconsistent. This season almost* feels right to do it with a lot of 4.5 options.

I really like this team but I would swap Haaland for Jesus. Jesus is a guaranteed starter and I think over the course of the season will fetch more points. Gives you further 3.5m to work with and probably can upgrade the defence. Dalot is a shrewd pick and I will keep Neco as the budget defender who is a starter. I like Botman too, so maybe upgrade Lamptey to TAA, and Patterson to Tomiyasu?

I think you will fetch more points with Jesus/TAA/Tomiyas than Haaland/Lamptey/Patterson.

So you should go with 2x 4.5 FWDs + Undav then?

Surely if the players are good for the price, they're good for the price. The consensus seems to be that all three of these are good options individually.

Things are not as black and white as that, Mr. Deulofail, and you know it.

I did a long piece on why I consider team structure important at the start of the season and I stand by it. It's about being able to pivot correctly. We aren't going to get everything right. Not even close but 3 forward slots spent on 8.0m forwards makes things difficult if a budget forward like Solanke or Mitrovic or Toney comes alive.

We might not want to sell any of the big 3 forwards. Whereas if you have 2 forwards you can downgrade a mispeforming defender or mid instead to fund the upgrade. You have more options to fund the budget forward who you might want. If you have 3 forwards, you must get rid of one of them even if they're doing decent.

That makes so little sense to me, I'm sorry. If you have players doing well, you won't want to sell them, so don't buy players that might do well. Gonna move on

Let's say Jesus, Haaland and Kane are doing okay, scoring goals, but nothing amazing.

But Mitrovic is tearing it up, getting braces, soaring in price especially because he's cheaper than the 3 forwards you have. You're going to want him in with more urgency, especially when the fixtures start to turn.

In midfield, you are struggling because your budget punts like Grealish, Neto, Martinelli aren't working out. You'll need to work on your weak links which means that in theory you should be using 2 transfers on midfield.

However, the highest priority buy is not a midfielder but a forward and you just don't have the flexibility on the slot because Jesus is doing okay but not great and getting rid of him is less effective than replacing say Grealish. Problem is Mitrovic at that price is better than picking up a Bruno G for instance who could be doing well.

Do you see where I'm getting at? Being locked with 3 higher priced forwards who you might not want to remove is more inflexible than having 2. The other benefit, let's say your defense is the one underperforming, you can move the funds to get Mitrovic upfront while moving funds out of defense if let's say TAA gets injured. It's more flexible across all positions not just forward.

People put too much weight into the relative weight of positions, horizontally and vertically (aka 'team structure'). Don't worry about it 🙂

You're not wrong. I wouldn't have 3 premiums but if you do than something has to give. I think Neto and Bailey are good enough punts to start the season but they are both transfers waiting to happen. Netos injury record and as a Villa fan I'm still not sure Bailey makes it into the starting 11 every week.

Agree Neto & Bailey gambles but at 5.5/5 could be bargains

True - You understand the risks so I wouldn't worry to much about folks comments on structure.

Opening fixture doesn't help - I think he will pick up steam as their fixture clear up

If the first fixture was golden, I'd probably get him and got for a definite WC5 team.

The first international break is traditionally a good point. Transfer window closed, new signings bedded in, a bit of a fixture swing for some teams.
