Most teams have completed their pre-season tours around the globe and as Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers, we are always looking to gain whatever information we can from these warm-up matches.

READ MORE: The Complete Guide to FPL Pre-Season 2022/23: Best players, fixtures, transfers + more

The “it’s only pre-season” phrase is thrown about a lot so it is often difficult to know how much we can really discern from these games.

Indeed, there’s this excellent analysis done by the Opta Analyst account that shows that there is very little correlation between a team’s pre-season results and their form in the first 10 league matches.

I completely agree with what one Twitter user said in one of the replies: goals/assists/clean sheets are largely irrelevant but minutes, formation and fitness is what I think we can take from these games.

With that in mind, these are my thoughts so far…

Chelsea

As a Chelsea fan, it is only fair that I start by talking about the Blues first. It was always going to be a summer of transition after losing so many key players and there also being changes in the boardroom. We have an extremely bloated squad, full of players who are looking to leave but who nobody wants. It’s also the first time this group of players has had a manager for an extended period, so I don’t know if maybe they are just used to the constant shock factor that a change in head coach brings?

Either way, I know I said we shouldn’t read too much into the goal/clean sheet numbers but the performances in the games I watched were very poor and disjointed. Thomas Tuchel does not sound like a happy man and I am inclined to ignore the Blues’ assets early doors. Reece James (£6.0m) will likely be playing right centre-back until we get some reinforcements and Ben Chilwell (£6.0m) is nowhere near sharpness yet.

Manchester United

I blame my pod partner and fellow Pro Pundit Lateriser for this: I am quite bullish on United after what I have seen. Again, I am not reading too much into the goals they scored against Liverpool’s third-string team or Crystal Palace’s B team. I am looking at the patterns of play and the movement off the ball, and this team is completely unrecognisable. The manager let David de Gea (£5.0m) know in no uncertain terms how he wants to play and Erik ten Hag seems to me a manager with a clear philosophy, something Manchester United have lacked in the last decade.

Their assets are definitely under-priced after their disastrous 2021/22 campaign and I am undecided still who to go for between Marcus Rashford (£6.5m) and Anthony Martial (£7.0m). The elephant in the room obviously is Cristiano Ronaldo (£10.5m): he is still a Manchester United player at the time of writing and might be when the season kicks off but I think he will be gone by the end of the transfer window. However, it does raise some concern, as Martial could easily take Rashford’s spot on the left. Jadon Sancho (£7.5m), then, seems to be the most ‘stable’ of the lot.

FPL pre-season lessons:

Arsenal

The Gunners have had a great transfer window and I am very bullish about Gabriel Jesus’ (£8.0m) prospects this season. I really rate the player and breaking free from the shackles of a Pep Guardiola system should give him a lot more freedom. He has also already spoken about how he wants to add more goals to his game.

Along with Mohamed Salah (£13.0m), Joao Cancelo (£7.0m) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m), Jesus is one of the few locks in my FPL side. I will likely double up on the Arsenal attack, keeping the fixtures in mind, but who I go for between Gabriel Martinelli (£6.0m) and Bukayo Saka (£8.0m) will probably be a late decision.

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR

Antonio Conte has transformed Tottenham Hotspur into a formidable outfit and their attacking numbers after his appointment were up there with the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool. I really want to invest in one of their wing-backs but the situation is a bit murky: Matt Doherty (£5.0m) was the only player not to come off the bench in their last pre-season game and Ivan Perisic (£5.5m) looks like he still needs to build some fitness. I am not convinced about the viability of a three-premium setup and really want to include at least one of their attackers, so it might have to be at Erling Haaland’s (£11.5m) expense.

ZOPHAR’S CURRENT FPL DRAFT

I will be back again next week with my thoughts after the final pre-season games and the Community Shield.

In the meantime, we have been churning out content over at the FPL Wire Youtube channel. We have covered the promoted teams, defenders and midfielders so far, with defenders to come later this week.

Decent. Darwin over Jesus a bit of a gamble that could go either way. Not too keen on the defence: Perisic mightn't be fully fit, Trippier has tough fixtures and Tomiyasu hasn't got much of a ceiling.

I have gone for Dalot at £4.5m given he appears a lock to start ahead of Wan-Bissaka, worth a punt for GW1 and be changed out pretty easily given he might be bench fodder anyway.

Lot's of good cheap midfield options emerging, Dewsbury-Hall, Neto, Podence, Bailey etc, its a nice price point this season but Trippier is too tempting.

City, Liverpool, Arsenal are the best three teams to start with however Kane is the best captain option for GW1 IMO.

    Ederson
    TAA Robbo Cancelo Zinchenko Trippier
    KDB Diaz Martinelli
    Kane Jesus

Scores out of 10, ladies and gentlemen:

    Martinez
    Trent, Cancelo, Robertson, Gabriel
    Salah, Saka, Maddison, Bailey, Almiron
    Kane
    (Olsen, Ait-Nouri, Greenwood, Plange)
0.5m ITB for Kane > Haaland if it's needed

Love the Martinez pick, prefer Zinchenko to Gabriel as he's a card magnet, Almiron is a nice punt, how much is he?

Picking Gabriel based on guaranteed minutes, and he's against teams who are quite bad at defending set-pieces.
        Almiron is 5.0m

the other half of my brain is wondering if this yields more minutes for Neto and asks who's on pens while Jimi is out. Right now I'm very happy with my draft with Neto as an 11th/12th man depending on matchups.

Thoughts on this? I'm thinking about downgrading Awoniyi to fodder, and upgrading Andreas to Neto with 0.5 ITB?

    Ederson
    TAA - Robbo - Cancelo - Gabriel
    Salah - Saka - Sancho - Bailey
    Kane - Awoniyi

Not rotating but choosing the attackers who are in form. Always get more than Kane. I was thinking of this because Kane is not useful without captaining him when I already have 2 captain choices to choose.

My only opinion is that I see far too many drafts with two of them (usually Neto and Bailey), which I think is far too much exposure to risk in the early stages.

There is almost nowhere to go to to get out of those positions without taking hits, and I agree, I'd rather start with a 6.0, Martinelli being safe enough for me, and downgrade if sub-6.0 value appears.

I'd be OK with having one but at the same time, with the low cost of upgrading them to someone more reliable, I'd rather not.

      1. Deulofail
        • 10 Years

Going with both is better than going for one, potentially, as they 'rotate', which means you get more for your investment when they are in your XI, instead of wasting a slot in the XI during a poor fixture. So long as the most expensive one is in your XI more often than not. Would be better value with a 4.5m mid magic bean, though.

And with 5 sub-rule - and the potential teams you can build withOUT doing this - it still doesn't really make sense, imo.

Yeah then I agree 100% about these players.

(Except that I'm not a fan of looking for 'somewhere to go'. Just downgrade someone if you need to upgrade someone else. You'll usually have to do this anyway, so no need to build a suboptimal team)

I think Neto is the winner for me. He is likely the most nailed of the 3, with the best fixtures, and arguably the best player of the three. Is young and perhaps the most open to improvement, has pre-season form and a decent (for his price) FPL history.

Saying that, I'm currently on Martinelli also.

    5. Deulofail
      • 10 Years

I don't see the point of them. There's enough money to buy 10 outfield players you think could get loads of points individually, so why put players who definitely won't in your XI. In previous seasons, I've tended to start the season with as many players from top sides as possible, for maximum 'predictability' of quality and goals being scored (or not conceded), often managing to start with XI of these players.

This season, it's the obvious thing to do given the fixtures and prices, yet people are still looking for their '5th midfielder' false category, or 5.5m mid false category, etc.

I don't really get it. Even if Neto gets returns, is he going to be worth 6.0m? Maybe. But that's still not a lot of points. It's like putting a 4.5m mid in your team because he's going to be worth 5.0m. If you can afford better players, there's no need to play that game.

My point was that there is a massive gulf between the cheap players and the mid-to-higher-priced players. Quite an exponential scale, I'd say! If you squint your eyes, you might see that money spent gets you plenty-of-points to loads-of-points, while very little money spent gets you next-to-zero. That's my perspective on the matter. Nothing is invalidated by using a scale instead of absolutes.

Wow expert analysis, nobody could have figured that one out without the great Deulo, but guess what, you can't fill your team with all the expensive players

But you can fill you team with those more expensive players. You can. That's my point. You can.

You don't need a 4.5-5.5 mid in your team.

I'd rather not engage with you in future if this is your approach. Go back and read my whole comment if you're confused. It's all covered there.

I'm sure one or two of them will turn out to be good picks, but starting with multiple of them is a risky play. As someone who's considering 3mium I might be taking that risk, but I see how it can backfire. Two holes in your squad that will need hits to replace

I think the allure of premiums is bigger this year then most, making people look for value in cheap players - whether or not it's there

I think there is value to them if you build your team using the formula: invest your 36m(?) available budget in getting the upgrades that will give you the most value for money and then use whatever is left to bulk up/give yourself captain options etc.

If, for 5.5m (not 6m,) Neto gets you 6G 6A on the season then he's a good value pick and worth starting every week as long as you genuinely are realising the saving elsewhere not, IMO, getting a third premium player in for example - that's just scrimping on potentially valuable positions in orders to make your team worse in terms of value for money.

Grealish could have a bumper year with no Sterling in his way and a mammoth goal scoring Norseman to convert all the chances he creates. Or he could continue to expend all his energy on getting hacked in the ankles and complaining to referees instead of scoring FFL points, as he did last season.
I'm not sold enough to draft him personally, but I would have no argument with anyone who does

    Focussing on the first 6 GW's then can take a wildcard closer to the World Cup;

    De Gea (Gazzaniga)
    Cancelo, Dalot, TAA (Neco, Patterson)
KDB, Maddison, Son (C) Gibbs-White, Aaronson
    Vardy, Edouard (Awoniyi)

I think it's worth a punt having Aaronson in there as Leeds have favourable first run of fixtures. Also think that Vardy and Maddison will be fresher and benefit from no European runs this year.

Gibbs-White to be the creative spark in Wolves' side alongside Neto. Jimenez being injured only helps MGW for gametime prospects.

Please rate my team and give your feedback? Thanks

Yeah, I'd like to fit Bamford in somehow but not enough funds. I think Leeds have nice run of fixtures to start.

    Ederson
    TAA, Cancelo, Trippier, Cash (Neco)
Salah, Díaz, Bowen, Bruno Guimarães (Andreas)
    Haaland, Brennan Johnson (4.5)

Would you downgrade Ederson to 4.5, B. Johnson to a bench fodder, and upgrade Andreas to Grealish, playing a 4-5-1 but having only Neco as sub? Or would you take this more conservative approach above?
