With Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) days away, we’re welcoming back our stellar team of Pro Pundits, Hall of Famers and guest contributors for the new campaign.

Our writers will be providing regular articles and team reveals throughout the new season, with only Premium Members able to access every single one.

Next up is three-time top 200 finisher and two-time champion of India, Lateriser, who talks through his latest Gameweek 1 plans.

The FFS Pro Pundits 34

We’re almost there! It really feels like Christmas and I’m very excited about this new season. I feel like it is going to be very interesting because as things stand, there are just so many good Fantasy Premier League (FPL) options to consider.

Until last night, I felt so unsure about my Gameweek 1 draft and while I’ve had a proper tinker session this morning, I just feel like come Friday, I might land in a different place.

It is the nature of the season, I think. Liverpool and Manchester City now have more traditional number nines in their armoury. Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal have strengthened. It possibly can’t get worse for my club Manchester United (who have impressed me in pre-season, but it is only pre-season), while the likes of Chelsea still have good FPL assets at their disposal and some great fixtures to start the season. I feel like more so than any other year, there are way more ways than one to skin this FPL cat.

So, let’s talk about this morning’s tinker I have had and where my current draft is. It is worth pointing out that this is my draft as of Sunday and plenty could change by the time we get to Friday’s deadline.

LIVERPOOL PICKS

Let’s start with the primary talking point and that is Liverpool.

I think there might be a fair few of us that are thinking, ‘I wish we could have five from that team’. For me, Trent-Alexander Arnold (£7.5m) and Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) are not going anywhere. I won’t talk about them for too long but Alexander-Arnold looks like he’s basically playing as a midfielder in the half-spaces for Liverpool and I expect him to get a few more goals than usual this season (just like he did in the Community Shield).

READ MORE: Haaland, Darwin, Salah: How the big FPL names fared in the Community Shield

Going without Salah in Gameweek 1 in a previous season completely dismantled my campaign and I was never able to recover from that. As much as the theory might have legs at present (because of other value picks from Liverpool and premiums from Manchester City and Spurs rotating well), it simply is something I’m not wired to consider as an FPL manager right now.

When it comes to the third Liverpool spot, my thinking is that you can’t go wrong with Andrew Robertson (£7.0m) or Luis Diaz (£8.0m). Robertson was so close to goal on so many occasions against Manchester City, which is him basically carrying forward last season’s form. Diaz, meanwhile, looks first choice on that left-hand side. Against Manchester City yesterday, he played the Mane role, drifting a lot more central than I remember him previously. I think the presence of Roberto Firmino (£8.0m) has a lot to do with that, of course, as the Brazilian tends to make others around him better FPL assets.

Now the punt that I’m currently taking is Darwin Nunez (£9.0m). No, I don’t think he’s nailed or a sure starter but I’m not a very risk-averse manager and I just think his ceiling is very high. If, come Friday, we get the sense that he’s not going to start, I’ll go back to Robertson or Diaz but as things stand I’m going with Nunez. I just think that whenever I’ve seen Liverpool play so far, he tends to hog a high percentage of expected goals (xG) in that Liverpool team and if that continues and he starts versus Fulham, I like his ceiling. My back-up plan is Robertson, who I currently prefer to Diaz because of the goalscoring positions the Scot is taking up.

KANE TO HAALAND IN GAMEWEEK 2

That’s it from me for now but I’m interested to see where I land on Friday. I just want to reiterate that this season there are a lot of good FPL options so don’t be afraid to play your own game. Good luck and see you next week!

We’ve covered the promoted teams, midfielders, forwards and defence in depth on The FPL Wire and will be doing our Gameweek 1 pod on Monday in case you fancy watching.

Too risky, cannot decide to go with or against template?

    Mendy,
    Trent, Robbo, Walker, Saliba
    Salah, Son, Bowen, Martinelli
    Jesus, BJ

    4, Bailey, Neco, Taylor

I think the game is always more fun if you pick the players you want instead of the players that others are picking. If they happen to be the same players, that's fine.

Never understood the logic of this kind of point. Does Kane stand in front of the goal and think, "You know what, I've never won a trophy, so I'll just head this over the bar"?

    A)

    B)

    Zinchenko l James l TAA l Cancelo l Walker

Not a terrible idea by any stretch. There are many ways to ‘skin this FPL cat’ as the article says.
For me, Kane & Haaland are both gunna score 20+ goals, and with Kane I wouldn’t be shocked to see him in the teens for assists too.
I want a piece of that pie for sure

      1. adstomko
        • 10 Years
        4 years, 4 days ago

        Yeah that's the worry.
        A Kane/Haaland-less draft example:

        Meslier
        Trent, Robertson, Doherty, Perišić
Salah (C), Mount, Saka, Kulu, Maddison
        Jesus
        (Klaesson, Saliba, Archer, Plange)

        1. AIRMILES
          • 15 Years
          4 years, 4 days ago

I could be entirely wrong here, so bear in mind that this is just my opinion.

I like the idea of just having one premium, but I think there are better uses of those extra funds.
I think two Spurs defenders is overkill.
Kulu has done nothing pre-season, and from GW2, he might lose minutes to Richarlison.
You've gone very heavy in midfield, meaning you miss out on Neto and Martinelli; very good, cheap options.
Having Robertson makes it harder to bring in Diaz or Darwin if they kick off the season well. I would suggest having Cancelo instead.

          1. adstomko
            • 10 Years
            4 years, 4 days ago

True, plus those 8m mids could all go down in price with rotation transfers.

I think I'm going 4-4-2 without Cancelo & Darwin, as I think Robertson & Trent score more points up to GW5.
            Then, I might switch it

              So basically, this:

              Meslier
              Trent, Robertson, Perišić, Saliba
              Salah (C), Mount, Maddison, Bailey
              Kane, Jesus
              (Klaesson, Williams, Andreas, Archer)

I'm pondering this too. I'm currently on Son and Salah (+Darwin). I understand the logic of having either Kane or Haaland in case one of them goes mad, but I don't actually think either of them will outscore Son in the early gws, so not sure I want to tie up funds with them

      1. adstomko
        • 10 Years
        4 years, 4 days ago

        I just don't see the point in having Kane/Haaland without a (C).
Kulu & Saka could score more points than Kane/Haaland & Bailey

I will definitely captain Kane/Haaland on occasion. No doubts about it.

I'm doing this, gives me a premium defense and well balanced midfield. I'm only worried about no Spurs attack, but that can be remedied with an early WC once we see which one of Kane/Son is the better asset.

    ……..Ramsdale - 4.0
    TAA - Cancelo - James - Perisic - (Neco)
    Salah - Dias - Martinelli - Bailey - (Andreas)
    Kane - Jesus - (Archer)

0.5 left ITB just incase I need to do Kane > 11.6 Haaland, Bailey > Neto, Martinelli > Rashford, Perisic > Dias or something like that.
Not totally sold on Luiz Dias over Robbo, but that’s where I’m at right now.

My big at the back draft and I think I like it! Thoughts?

    Ramsdale, Ward
    TAA, Robbo, Cancelo, Trippier, Cash
    Salah, Saka, Bailey, Andreas, Dasilva
    Kane, Jesus, Plange

Had Mahrez and Diaz in yesterday, but was never overly confident in those selections. Mahrez was to get City cover, but they looked flat going forward and Foden was back earlier than I though he would be to add more competition. Diaz vs Robbo was a tough call, but Robbo looked better yesterday so I’ve gone with him now.

I like it. It’s basically Cash & Tripp versus the Neto/Bailey/Rashford spots in other peoples drafts. And, whilst I wouldn’t want to guess which will score more, they will give you a good run for your money

Cheers thanks. Yeh I’m excited about Cash and Trip! Been in pretty much all my drafts after I bailed on Chelsea defence.

Saka to Martinelli is the other thing I’m looking at as I think Mart could be really good this year, especially at his price. That would allow me another 8m mid, but I’d still need a bit more out of defence to do that. Saka taking the pen and being more assured of starts is swaying it for me now.

What is happening with Wolves strikers / forwards?

Jimenez is injured so not an option.
Fabio Silva has been loaned out so not an option.

Are they going to put Neto, Hwang, Podence as their front three?

Important to this conversation is MGW. He will play in that front 3, or just behind. Really creative and scores goals. So, I’d say Neto, Podence, MGW. Hwang has also been injured all pre-season.

After GW1 they will just be a sub, so longevity isn't that big a deal.

Monitor Sancho news. If he’s fit and ready go Dalot. Justin in any other scenario.

No. People say why not just get Martinelli, which is a fair arguement - but if Saka does better than Martinelli you'll be flying.

Nah, its good, just Saka is hard to justify with Martinelli there two mil cheaper and there are other nice 8 mil mids you could have instead like Mount, Maddison, Kulu.

    Thoughts please!

Which is best? Playing a 5-4-1 / 4-5-1 depending on match up

    a) Ramsdale, James, Bailey
    b) Raya, Robbo, Andreas

So effectively removing a viable bench option and downgrading keeper to bring Robbo in

    1. Herger

A I think. I wouldn’t want to be playing Andreas

Would have Ait-Nouri as an alternative so could just be a fixed 5-4-1 in the option with Robbo

You got to get Gabriel Jesus. £8m for a player who is nailed striker for a top 6 side and has the potential to score 18+ goals is a bargain.

The real choice is between KDB vs Haaland vs Kane vs Son vs Salah. Which two or three do you pick as you can't have them all.

Yes. I was considering getting him for gw 2, it seems I would have to start with him. Just didn’t fancy him vs Palace especially with that ownership but it’s a dangerous game

Lateriser goes non-template, high ceiling, upside chasing and emotional until 1 hour before the deadline.

Yes it’s the safe play. May just leave him in the team since I was already planning to get him gw 2

My friend my friend don’t play Greenwood, play Andreas.

Get Patterson in for Vest. Coleman injury so will play at wing back (4.0m)

I stopped playing after GW4 last season to make it two seasons in a row I’ve quit the game. I actually had an amazing start was like 70K. But what I do remember is going with the crowd with Shaw! Never again.
