With Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) days away, we’re welcoming back our stellar team of Pro Pundits, Hall of Famers and guest contributors for the new campaign.

Our writers will be providing regular articles and team reveals throughout the new season, with only Premium Members able to access every single one.

Next up is former FPL champion Simon March, who talks through his latest Gameweek 1 plans.

FPL team reveal: Why I've picked Vardy over Haaland and Kane

It’s not often we’re presented with a genuine game-changer in FPL but, this season, I think we might actually have one. Because of the break for the World Cup after Gameweek 16 and the unlimited transfers that FPL managers will have available to them before the restart, playing an early Wildcard is a more viable option than ever.

With this in mind, I almost feel like we owe it to ourselves to approach the opening Gameweeks as aggressively as possible. With my team, I’m intending to approach the first half-dozen Gameweeks of a season in a way that I might normally approach the final six Gameweeks of a typical campaign. Not only does that mean that I’m focusing disproportionately on players with good fixtures during this period but, also, that I’m willing to be less flexible in terms of team structure and take a few more risks than I might normally do, given the handy bailout option that the first Wildcard presents if I get things really wrong.

Of course, I’m not 100% committing to a Wildcard in Gameweek 7 – I’ll have been able to switch out a third of the squad by then just using free transfers – but treating the first six fixtures like a mini-season is the kind of low risk/high reward opportunity that I love in FPL

With all that said, here’s my FPL draft for 2022/23.

Goalkeepers

Xhaka and Moura recalled as Ramsdale starts again

I’ve gone for Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale (£5.0) in goal due to his fixtures and Arsenal’s demonstrable strength at the back, which we might expect to improve further with the addition of William Saliba (£4.5m) and Oleksandr Zinchenko (£5.0m). In addition to clean sheets, Ramsdale has a tendency to collect bonus points (14 last season, second only to Liverpool’s Alisson Becker (£5.5m) who managed 15).

My current back-up goalkeeper is Brighton’s own back-up, Jason Steele (£4.0m), because it offers cover if I go for the ‘downgrade’ of Ramsdale to Brighton’s number one, Robert Sanchez (£4.5m), to save money at some point down the line.

I’ve seen enough FPL now to be convinced that two £4.5m goalkeepers is the optimum strategy (provided you pick the right ones, of course) but, since I’m focused on getting everything possible out of the opening six Gameweeks, I’m shelving that approach in favour of trying to maximise the points I can get out of them and, for me, Ramsdale offers the best value route to doing that. I just have to hope he doesn’t get injured in that period.

    Ward/Sanchez

    TAA Perisic Zinchenko

    Salah Son Martinelli Neto Bailey

    Kane Jesus

    N.Williams Patterson 4.5m

Will move either Son or Kane to KDB or Haaland for GW2

Ward and Sanchez rotate very nicely if Ward gets the jersey. I'm far from convinced Zinch is the best 5.0 and would be a bit worried about Perisic after Contes comments. The rest is nice.

    A) Ederson, James, TAA
    B) Mendy, Cancelo, Robbo

Covers the same 3 defences, for the same price.

    Afternoon all,

I've set up a top 10K all time league. What's your all time rank? You can check here:

    https://www.premierfantasytools.com/whats-my-all-time-rank/

They have finally updated it so new team ID's work, as this was an issue when I posted before. If you are top 10K please use this link to join the league.

    https://fantasy.premierleague.com/leagues/auto-join/pb0qri

Please don't enter if you are not, as I just spent 30 mins removing 14 people who shouldn't have entered now I could check their team ID.

Some great players in already including 54th all time and multiple top 1K players, would be great to have some more of you in : )

Getting a bit fed up with people on Reddit not understanding the Cucurella /Dumfries moves, why Chelsea are going for them and how it affects James/Chilwell.

The amount of people who think buying Dumfries will push James primarily into a RCB... jeez.

    1. Nate(U)dog(ie)
      • 5 Years

Surely it does mean that we will see James playing at RCB more regularly than otherwise though, no? I'm assuming the attempts for Cucurella and Dumfries are to give room for Alonso and Azpi to leave (maybe Emerson as well) but I would have thought that with Tuchel's comments on managing James and him being deployed at RCB as well as RWB in preseason means he'll still be utilised there from time to time

      1. Nate(U)dog(ie)

(Although I know being short of CBs during preseason played a part)

Reece is still forst choice RWB. We're still in for a RCB, who would be our first choice RCB.

James is still only going to play RCB for rotation reasons. Will they play together on occasion? Sure - but this is to protect out wingbacks who let's not forgot, both got injured for sizeable chunks of last season.

They'll definitely be used with the 5 subs rule. Lots of Dumfries for Reece subs etc.

You'll notice Tuchel tended to avoid playing to RWB-able players at the same time because it increases the risk of injury for both and if that happens we get screwed again.

I could be wrong but I'm a little unsure on that, Jota predominantly played as a CF last season, I'm not really sure if he'll be moved back to the wing, seems like Klopp prefers him up top

Nunez and Firminho are mainly central. Jota has that flexibility. I can see him playing across the front 3 this year.

Convinced this is the best team that can be built….but it’s 0.5 over, so close!
Any ideas how to save that 0.5 please?

    Meslier
    Trent | Cancelo | 4.5
    Salah | Martinelli | Neto | Bailey
    Kane | Hauland | Jesus

    Ward | Neco | Andreas | Taylor

Maybe 2 x 4.0 keepers if it looks like Ward will be first choice?

    Thanks

Ward is a great keeper I liked him when he was in the league Cup games for the pool, don't think Brendan would let Schmeichel go if he wasn't confident in him. Ward time to have a no 1 spot.

      Haaland.

Why plan in a transfer. What if there's an injury or a different transfer you want to jump on.

See your transfers as worth 4 points. Does Kane outscore Haaland by that much?

I'd argue there's a good chance (maybe not quite 50/50) that Haaland outscores Kane in GW1.

    Sánchez // Ward
Trent Robertson Cancelo James // Williams

Any thoughts or suggestions? Bailey scares me but otherwise I’m very happy with the team

Pretty sure Salah outscores all defenders again this year.

You are right though, over the season.

He's maybe coming in from GW3 for me.

Yeah personally I think he starts at RWB regardless. I think it'll be James, Azpi, T. Silva, Koulibaly, Alonso. Still got Sarr and Chalobah who can play CB too

Who’ll get more game time out of Mahrez or Foden for the first 6?

I suspect Mahrez as Foden has had less pre season game time but who knows with Pep

      I think Foden

Foden by the end of 6. Mahrez probably more in GW1.

    Trippier or Walker?

    (Note: I don’t have Cancelo)

Trippier carries more attacking threat imo

      Trippier for me.

Walker's place might be under threat if Man City sign anyone.

    Am I g2g...?

    Raya
    TAA, Cancelo, Dias, Ait Nouri
    Salah, Mount, Diaz, Almiron
    Kane, Jesus

    4.0, N.Williams, Andreas, Plange

Dias was originally Chilwell but I don't think he starts GW1

Anyone else starting with Leicesters Ward 4.0 GK this opens a whole new can of worms. Schmeichel away

I start with Ward and Sanchez on the bench.

Maybe, it's a good fixture, but definitely have a playing 2nd keeper.

      B is template.

I think Haaland gets more minutes than Darwin early on. That didn't really help in the CS though.

So with this draft, it's pretty much Saka and Vardy over Martinelli and Kane?

Could work well - JV usually starts the season well.

Pedro Neto. One goal and one assist last season. Injury prone. Why is he so popular?

I have a theory that there needs to be at least 1 random bandwagon for each season.

Someone we can collectively look back on and wonder what we were all thinking.

He's probably a prime candidate for this year.
