FPL pre-season: Trossard hits hat-trick from wing-back role 1

LAST SEASON: ATTACK

Shots33110th
Shots in the box20013th
Shots on target11510th
Big chances3716th
Expected goals (xG)33.6615th

While the above numbers don’t leap off the page, it’s worth noting that the Steve Bruce era finished with Newcastle ranked 18th for shots in the box and 19th for shots on target, xG and big chances.

Howe oversaw a modest upturn in attacking output, without it being a spectacular U-turn.

It’s fair to say that the defensive acquisitions in the winter transfer window had more of a transformative effect than the players further forward, with Chris Wood (£6.0m) a willing target-man but ultimately scoring just two goals after his arrival.

Bruno Guimaraes (£6.0m), ironically not brought in for his goalscoring, was much more of a success, finding the net on five occasions in the run-in. No-one scored as many league goals under Howe as the Brazilian, despite his mid-season arrival, which says a great deal and likely why a winger and a striker remain priority targets.

LAST SEASON: DEFENCE

GAMEWEEK 12 ONWARDS
TotalRank v other Premier League clubs

Shots conceded3539th
Shots in the box conceded2379th=
Shots on target conceded1098th
Big chances conceded6014th
Expected goals conceded (xGC)40.6610th

An abject Newcastle were in the bottom two for clean sheets, goals conceded, big chances conceded and clean sheets until Howe was appointed.

The defensive improvements were slow and steady, as the struggling Magpies kept just one clean sheet in Howe’s first nine matches in charge.

Some astute January transfer window captures helped turn the ship around, with three-quarters of the backline – Dan Burn (£4.5m), Matt Targett (£5.0m) and Kieran Trippier (£5.0m) – overhauled.

To say it was only Saudi money responsible for the subsequent purple patch is unfair, however, as Howe revitalised the flagging careers of Fabian Schar (£4.5m), Emil Krafth (£4.5m) and laughing-stock-turned-valued-midfield-shield Joelinton (£6.0m).

From Gameweek 24 onwards (after the transfer window had closed), Newcastle were the Premier League’s sixth-best team in the division for minutes per xGC and goals per game conceded. Only three goals were conceded in their final seven matches at St. James’ Park, too.

That should provide encouragement for the new season, then, particularly as the backline has been further strengthened with the capture of Sven Botman (£4.5m) and Nick Pope (£5.0m).

    Thoughts guys, please!

No Martinelli - he's a thorn in my side. Is Saka enough or is that £2m wasted? Having both and Jesus is just silly, right?!

    Ramsdale
    TAA / Robertson / Cancelo / Perisic
    Salah / Saka / Bailey / Neto
    Kane / Jesus

    Ward / William / Andreas / Archer

      Very good team.

Have 13/15 in my current draft (have Sanchez and White over Ramsdale and Williams)

Had a similar Martinelli dilemma but Saka is the better player and from the other 8.0 mids the only one I'd go for right now is Diaz whom I'd rather have Robbo anywhere. Saka can easily be downgraded to Martinelli anyway if there is a need for it

    Mendy or Ramsdale long term?

I have Ramsdale right now but thing I am worried about is locking myself up with triple Arsenal and would like to spread the risk..

I have James as well so it will be a Chelsea defensive double up.

Just can't decide who to go for!

GK spot is becoming a nuisance now lol

It's actually very good for a Threemium...just a little sceptical on the walker though that's all...I think Cancelo on the left coming in is a way bigger points potential...but nonetheless very good

Although I think TAA is a must, I'm not sure how many points the Leicester defense (effectively also the goalkeeper) may yield...they were around 15 to 16th in chances conceded last season and have had no defensive reinforcement....so even if you get save points, the average points per match may not be great

I'm currently on big at the back with a 5-3-2 formation. Thoughts on downgrading Ramsdale to Ward/Iversen for first two weeks to keep 1m in the bank in case I need to move money up front. As I will be using a mini WC (-4) for GW3, I could always jump on Ramsdale or Mendy at that time. But if I get Ramsdale, will need another hit to move funds..

I’m doing exactly this as it stands. 532 with 1.5m ITB. My main worry with 532 before was lack of flexibility to jump on midfield bangwagons… so happy with the cash ITB

I don’t expect us to be as bad defensively this season. Although given we were last in the PL for some defensive aspects that shouldn’t be hard. We hard a more or less fit squad with the exception of Ricardo, and our first team is still fairly formidable. Don’t expect us to sell Fofana or Maddison, think we will start stronger than people expect. Kasper got 131 points last season and we awful at the back, don’t see why Ward/Iversen won’t at least match that, which imo makes them good value at 4.0…

There generally seems to be a somewhat hysterical view about Leicester from those who don’t follow the club. As far as I can tell it comes from the shear volume of clickbait articles around about our players. Aside from the unsettling affect that may have on some, I’m fairly optimistic about this season, we just need a RW and maybe a CB before the window closes and to shift some deadwood. Tielemans to be replaced if we can find a buyer…

Hysteria aside, their fixtures are a bit tricky up until the time many of us will wildcard, GW8-9. It's the point where Arsenal's fixtures go south - I see it as a good point to bring in Leicester assets if they've been doing well enough, including that double 4m keeper if its proved itself.

The worry is the price rise...the starting Leicester GK may not be a 4.0 by gw8...could be close to 4.3

                • 8 Years

Yes agreed, I think the more sensible play on paper is Sanchez/Ramsdale and Ward rather than both 4.0 keepers, but after 1st WC I’ll be going with both I expect.

If I were doing more with the cash it freed up at the start, I’d be more likely to stick with it at the start, but since I plan to just have cash ITB, chances are I’ll use that cash to get Ramsdale and WC GW5…

The main spot I’d want is an 8m mid, but I think Martinelli is very well priced which means I’d need to upgrade Neto to so that… which I can do, but means going with a 4.5m mid in my bench instead of Bailey, and I’d rather keep Bailey for flexibility to start.

Bench Martinelli. Palace away is a very difficult fixture, and you probably have Jesus starting anyway.
If you bench Tripper this game, when will he ever play? Same goes with Bailey - you're never starting a 5m mid if the hype/form dies down.

Daniel Ward is better than you think and Rodgers knows it too.

When Rodgers was managing liverpool, Ward was sent on loan to Aberdeen where he racked up double digit clean sheets in half a season. He was called back from loan in January. Why? Because Rodgers wanted a closer look and saw him as legitimate competition to mignolet. He did not win that competition and only made a couple of starts in the cups but did impress when he played. He was sent on another successful loan again at huddersfield helping them get to the playoffs. You don't send back up goalkeepers on loan by the way. It defeats the point of being a back up. You send goalkeepers with the potential to be a number one and Ward impressed both times. Liverpool only release Ward after they signed allisson. Ward is a back up to Allison but not to mignolet or dare I say schmeichel. Leicster signed Ward as legitimate competition to schmeichel and even priced him at 5.0 because there was a chance leicster had signed him to start. That didn't happen and Ward has been forgotten, until Rodgers shows up. Now schmeichel and Ward may be to evenly matched to upset the apple art but Rodgers has said he sees Ward as a number one. He has reasons for this because he has worked with him before. I am not saying he is a world beater. I am saying he is a legitimate number 1 option for most teams and has just missed out to others who were there first. My last tantalizing tit bit is this. He saves penalties. 4.0 for a first team option goalkeepers who racks up saves and has a good penalty saving history. Are you sure we have not just been given a gift?

All that said. I was wrong about daka last season so tread carefully

Is his record in championship actually good?

      Games played: 43
      Clean sheets: 11
      Pens saved: 1/7
      Saves per game: 2

Huddersfield got promoted that season and the manager wanted to keep him for the premier league. Saved 4 penalties in the playoffs not included in your stats. I would say he did well

    Bailey or Perisic?

Perisic looked good in the last pre season match - Conte may have said he is is not 100% yet but better than any of our other options. Teamed with the fact that Soton nearly always lose their opening fixture, my money is on him.

      Good team.
Would try to find a way to get Cancelo over Walker though. Maybe downgrade Mount to Neto or Bailey?

Best combo? The other GK is Ward
    A) Iversen, White and Neto
    B) Sanchez, Gabriel and a 4.5 midfielder

Would the 4.5 be playing? If so then A, if not then B

Kane is a lock. Would you rather double up with Son or have Haaland?

Have Bailey and Neto but need 2 cheap Midfield / Forwards to play Bench boost.
What are the best and cheapest options?

For now I got Murphy and Stansfield as placeholders 4,5mill).
Can free up 1 mill if needed.

I have been steadily talking myself out of the 8m midfielders.

Last week I had Mathew and Diaz in my team. Both play for potent attacks with good fixtures.

But both are rotation risks. Maddison not prolific enough for 8m for my liking and transfer potential could distract in the short term. Mount just seems so…boring. Saka represents a bit too much invested in the arsenal attack (for a spurs fan). Kulu would have been of interest if 7.5.

In my latest draft I swapped out cancelo for walker to free up 2mil and changed the 2x 8m mids for KDB and Martinelli. I suppose there is rotation risk in walker and martinelli, but you expect that for those prices.

What 8m mid(s) are everyone else sticking with?

    My penultimate decision:

    A) Robertson + Perisic (532)
    B) Diaz + 5.0 def (442)

    Rest of team:
    Ederson
    TAA - Cancelo - James
    Salah - Martinelli - Neto
    Kane - Jesus
