FPL team reveal: Five-time top 1k finisher’s Gameweek 2 plans

With Fantasy Premier League (FPL) 2022/23 underway, we’ll be welcoming back our stellar team of Pro Pundits and Hall of Famers for the new campaign.

Our writers will be providing regular articles and team reveals throughout the new season, with only Premium Members able to access every single one.

Here, five-time top 1k finisher and Deputy Editor Tom Freeman shares his thoughts and transfer plans ahead of Gameweek 2.

... 2

The new FPL season is underway and if you owned Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) and Erling Haaland (£11.6m) in Gameweek 1, chances are you probably got off to a good start.

Fortunately, I was on the right side of the Haaland/Harry Kane (£11.4m) swing, ending the round on 73 points.

However, as focus now turns to Gameweek 2, here are some observations from the opening weekend that I found interesting, plus my own team and transfer plans.

SALIBA’S IMPRESSIVE DEBUT

Arsenal recorded a clean sheet in their 2-0 win at Crystal Palace on Friday night, with the impressive William Saliba (£4.5m) named man of the match on his first competitive Gunners start.

“You don’t really see that. At 21 years old, debut in the Premier League, against this opponent, against physical players – and resolve that situation the way he has done it. With that composure, with that calmness and with that presence. So big credit to the boy.” – Mikel Arteta on William Saliba

Notably, there is now more depth in Arsenal’s backline, with Oleksandr Zinchenko (£5.1m) also joining last season’s main four: Takehiro Tomiyasu (£4.5m), Ben White (£4.5m), Gabriel (£5.0m) and Kieran Tierney (£5.0m).

Now manager Mikel Arteta has options, I think their defensive assets will offer real value in 2022/23, especially given their fixture run between Gameweeks 2 and 8.

The full-backs inverted roles mean when the team loses possession, there is space for opposition wingers to exploit, but this new system should at least hand Arsenal more control, something they lacked towards the end of last season.

ANOTHER £4.5M MIDFIELD ENABLER?

Haaland Foden

A move to Darwin/Mitro/Jesus/Welbeck in gw3 would be a nice way to free up some money.

Tough one, seen a lot on here suggesting hold best but highly tempted to make the switch to Darwin before his price rise and another Kane price drop.

If Kane does turn up though, then could be a very nice differential against Wolves then Forest

Make a call on how you think Chelsea and Spurs plays out and then bench A or B.

If you’re not going to play Neto this week then you shouldn’t have bought him.

The one thing I will try to avoid the whole season is having the likes of Bailey, Neto, Andreas or any 4.5m midfielder in my starting 11.

I would rather have play a 4.5 defender or even Neco.

You do not have to play 5 in defence but that is an option.

You can go 442 or even 343 without Neto or Bailey in your starting eleven.

This is one of the reasons for my super early wildcard. Couldn’t bear seeing Neto/Bailey stinking up my team most weeks. Cue both of them scoring this weekend xD

      1. FOO FIGHTER
        • 4 Years

I never had either in my GW1 team.

My WC was activated for Haaland and Darwin plus realising having both Mount and Sterling was not the best selections I had made.

My idea was to go completely different from GW1 but still is after getting rid of them.

        1. The Iceman
          • 1 Year
          1 year, 8 months ago

That’s fair. Sterling is at an awkward price point and there are better 8.0 MIDs than Mount who I also started with for some reason (despite not really wanting him).

Have also jumped on Haaland and Darwin early. Annoyingly had Darwin in all my drafts but Klopp made it obvious he was being benched for Firmino in his presser and I took him back out. Go figure.

          Good luck!

Way to early to call them poor shouts. They are 5 and 5.5, facilitating other players. Can't expect fireworks every week. If they haven't done something after 3 games fair enough.

I never said they won't score any points. They will however get you either 2 or 3 points on a regular basis.

I am even confident in saying some of the defenders 4.5 defenders will outscore them.

Yeah I agree at the moment until we’ve seen a bit more from the cheap mids at least - with the cheap defenders there’s always a chance of a random clean sheet or something (especially with options as seemingly strong as Saliba)

I have Saliba and Dasilva, and here I am pondering playing Pereira over Bailey. Didn't expect a benching headache early on. Initially I was actually happy to play Dasilva on my first XI but it looked like he wasn't going to make the starting team at the end of preseason and Frank was talking up Jensen. Brentford fans seem to think Jensen isn't good enough so maybe Dasilva has done enough to come back in but there has to be a place for Damsgaard too so don't think I'd be chancing playing Dasilva yet, even if he has a great fixture this week.

Only Pep knows. My concern is unless you own KDB, all of Man City’s attacking midfielders are a rotation risk, particularly against the likes of Bournemouth at home.

Very true. Can’t afford KDB unfortunately. As a Mahrez owner him playing 2 mins against WHU is a bit of an insult for an £8m mid. But I guess in some ways that increases his chances of starting this gw

May as well give Mahrez this week and see what happens, if he starts he’s got a good chance of points. Would look to sell after, though.

This headache of will he / won’t he every weekend isn’t worth it.

Yup, at least you will not have this frustraion you are having now once he is gone.

Any City attacking mid other than KDB has been known to make you want to scratch out your eyes every season with Pep and his pets.

Not a City fan (and I doubt they’d have any idea either tbh) but I think he’s a sell after this gameweek. The upside probably means he’s a keep this week despite the uncertainty

This is the most asked question every year when it comes to city Mids. It’s all unknown and will remain like that through most of the season. Grealish was poor last week so foden may play left and Mahrez comes in or pep may opt to keep as he did week 1. It’s in the lap of the Gods and the risk you take with city

Not sure what your team structure is like but I wouldn’t go near Man Utd assets at the moment.

Aaronson at 5.5 is worth a punt, or just downgrade completely to a 4.5 and upgrade another spot.

      lee
      NOF

      CRY

Lets us WCers have this other 10 gun players - 😯

      Sanchez
      TAA - James - Walker
      Salah - Foden - Martinelli
      Haaland - Darwin - Jesus

Ward on the bench as well. Covers the bad fixtures of Sanchez till gw 16 really well.

Barring injury I won't be removing Salah, TAA, Haaland, James, Sanchez and Darwin.

Ward, Andreas, Da Silva, Neco make up a full playing bench with great rotation.

That leaves with only 4 spots to tinker with. Foden, Jesus, Martinelli and Walker.

I think WC now is the best option as I can go all aggressive with those 4 spots and chase hauls as I'm way ahead of the curve with this team.

This season, the value of holding WC is also less with the extra one in December.

THIS IS THE PLAY. Get ahead of the curve while you can 😉

      Is this a crazy move?
Salah and Archer out (13m+4.5m) and Darwin and Kulusevski (9m + 8.1m) in?
Neither will outscore Salah but the two combined probably will.
I'd wait and do it with 2 free transfers.
I can then play 5-2-3 or 4-3-3 formations.

      Thoughts please???

Just to clear things up, the only place Andreas Pereira should be is on your bench. He is 26 now and his career stats are as follows for goals:

      282 matches, 16759 minutes, 30 goals.

Why would you want him as your 4th mid?

I mean it's not quite that simple. I have Trippier in a 4-4-2 with Andreas first bench option.

Trippier is away to Brighton, who were playing well last season and have started this season just where they left off - albeit against a poor united. Do i think Newcastle keep a cleansheet against Brighton? Nope. So it's all about who has a greater assist potential, and on the Fulham v Liverpool game Andreas showed promise on the eye test.

It's a complete 50/50 for me at the moment out of them two. Andreas could play in a 3-5-2 or Trippier in a 4-4-2

It's literally one game - It was his first competitive game for Fulham against Liverpool and at times he was ahead of Mitrovic on the field of play. He's also on a lot of set pieces. You're basing all your information on the previous teams / formations and managers he's played under and not what you're seeing for Fulham and Marco Silva.

              • 4 Years

Andreas has played under several managers.

I cannot make my points clearer to you.

I know he has ... but he hasn't played under Marco Silva. Managers can change how players play, just look at Joelinton. Awful striker to an incredible midfielder. I'm guessing you didn't watch the Fulham v Liverpool game, because you wouldn't be so black or white - he was all over the pitch, and being on set pieces and if Mitrovic can keep his championship form up - there's a greater assist potential than he has ever had.

For what it's worth, i sort of get where you're coming from on his past data, and time will tell, and i probably will play Trippier this week. BUT next gameweek, when trippier has Manchester City and Andreas has Brentford it's definitely not so clear cut.

Messed up with a single premium structure. Told myself Haaland couldn’t do it in the Prem. Haaland was -8 away. WC to get him in plus tidy up other mistakes.

Oh well. Made a mistake. 78 points GW1 so at least not behind the pack. Will have to be super disciplined with FTs. World Cup a lifeline too.

Cash, because he could get a clean sheet and provide an assist or goal.

Downgrade Neto and upgrade one of your defenders.

probably Cash, but Fulham at home will be one of Neto's best fixtures all year, anyone else you could bench ?

Is it worth getting rid of Perisic for Saliba/Gabriel for a -4?

You think Perisic will get more points over the course of 5/6 GW compared to an Arsenal defender?

Yes. I always go 343 started with Kane Jesus Darwin and used FT Kane to Haaland as planned

Thinking about it myself, with international break it’s less of a concern. Game week 1-8 fixtures are very juicy for top teams, could be out of sight if I’m not careful

I’m not wildcarding because of score. Kulu, Salah, 5ATB with 4 clean sheets between them including GK, Martinelli.

Had a good team. But can’t get to Haaland. It’s WCing away from a bad inflexible structure

No but I arguably should. I think if you’re wildcarding GW1 though you probably have to wildcard to something pretty safe - the main reason I went for something a bit different to begin with was for fun so I don’t want to go back on that to wildcard and play safe. Might as well go all in now

Groß being the highest 5.5 mid scorer
Schar being the highest 4.5 defender
No pool clean sheet or defensive attacking return
Kane blanking and only a Son assist in a 4 goal rout
              Villa blanking vs Bournemouth
Jesus blanking after smashing pre season

              Anymore?

will playing with an actual 9 impact Foden's returns (reduce shooting opportunities) ? For his main 2 season with City it's either been false 9 or Jesus for the most part, who isn't really an out and out striker

although Sterling and Sane still managed to thrive playing in Pep's system with Kun

KDB or nothing from their midfield.

You will never figure out which other one starts. FACTS!

agreed, but even with that Foden still has close to 5 PPG last 2 seasons

if he steps up his output a tad there's still value there, just wish Grealish cost City less so Pep would be more inclined to bench him because he just doesn't bring as much to Cities' team as Foden

I think it’s KDB or nothing from their midfield long term but there’s always spells you can back one of the others for a little while. I think Foden’s the best of the rest and probably the one most highly rated by Pep.

I don’t have anything very insightful to say on your point but I think you’re right - probably shooting opportunities reduced, but more assists. Maybe too simplistic though

From what we saw Grealish & Foden were super wide and KDB and Gundogan pushed forward as a duo to support Haaland.
Walker and Cancelo then pushed into that midfield space that KDB & Gundo vacated.

However - they were playing against a very disciplined WH team who didn't really test them the other direction due to injury and set up. (MC had 2 shots on goal all game - the two goals...that's it).

If this structure continues I fully expect Gundogan to become fantasy viable - especially if Bernardo goes to Barca. City only really gave KDB, Gundo & Silva to play those roles, though it would be super fun to see Foden as an 8.

Waffle, waffle, waffle.....I like Gundogan as a punt this week and am considering Mount > Gundo.
I had assumed I'd want Foden or Grealish but neither of them interest me based on gw1.

So with two premiums most of us are playing a cheap mid every week, me with Bailey

      Long term this isn't ideal

See what happens over the next few gamesweeks but the only place i can get some money and still keep a strong defence and to upgrade Bailey is to move Jesus to Mitrovic

Hopefully a cheap mid emerges that you would be happy to play every week, could be Lingard, Aaronson, whoever

He is a very good player but Saka and Kuluveski cost less and are better options at this point.
