For most of us Fantasy managers, we’ll have to endure a bad Gameweek or three over the course of a season. Community writer shaun_drift discusses six ways to help stop Fantasy Premier League (FPL) from spoiling your weekend.

Whatever your rank history, if you’re visiting this site, chances are that you take FPL seriously, which means you will have spent many a weekend checking team sheets, goals, assists and every other stat that can earn or deny you the only thing that really matters – points.

Since I started playing in 2009/10, I have never finished higher than 67k, so clearly, I’m nowhere near an elite manager and can relate to most managers playing the game.

It can be extremely demoralising to be on the end of a big red arrow, but it’s even harder to take when you have put hours of your time into reviewing stats, reports and watching games.

When the pandemic bit hard and we had the mid-season break, I found it particularly tough to take when everyone was handed a free Wildcard, having deployed mine right before football stopped. This led to a real lack of enjoyment and despite achieving my highest points tally ever, it didn’t translate into a particularly good ‘OR’. The ill feeling of an impending red arrow or missed opportunity can affect many people outside of the game. It has drastically changed my mood before, which is completely unfair on those around me, and in the past I’ve even found it take some enjoyment out of football supporting.

In prior years, having won my mini-league, I felt the sense of achievement was wiped out immediately after the final games were played and I even felt empty because the season was over. I had ruined the game for myself by focusing too much on the negatives and not enough on the positives, to an extent where even the major positive of winning my mini league didn’t feel all that great.

I considered taking a season off to see how I felt about FPL and football afterwards, but honestly, I wasn’t ready to give it up completely. However, I knew that I had to change something to stop it affecting my mood and also so that I actually enjoyed it again.

Since the start of last season I made an effort to be a lot more positive about the game and I’m glad to say, I was able to get the enjoyment back and did not allow the game to ruin my weekends!

Simon March has contributed some excellent articles to this site about our FPL mindsets and how to try and avoid the above feelings. I won’t claim to have anywhere near his intelligence in this field, but wanted to share the changes I have made towards playing, in a bid to try and help anyone who has lost enjoyment or find it affects them negatively beyond the game itself.

1. Set a modest target

There is a lot of focus on the top 10k, but to put that in context, that was the top ~0.0011% of all players last season. Try setting a target that you would be happy with and not focus on what everyone else is aiming for.

2. Don’t compare yourself to elite managers

If you struggle with the feeling of lagging behind others, just avoid it. It takes time to improve your game, so compare yourself to players around your rank or in your mini-leagues. I found playing my own way and not getting drawn into what others are doing is much more enjoyable.

3. Stay off social media or decide when to interact

There is no doubting the wealth of information and excellent content creators on social media. But I found I was spending too much time reading lots of information from multiple sources, that it ended up confusing me most weeks. Post deadline I would read the success stories, compounding my misery if I’d had a bad week. If you struggle with the same, consider waiting a day or two until the attention turns to the next Gameweek.

I usually limit my reading and listening to Fantasy Football Scout and one podcast a week nowadays. I appreciate this won’t be for everyone and that interacting with the community is part of the enjoyment. I have found though that my decision-making is much clearer now, and the result is that I feel better when my decisions pay off, and not as bad when they don’t, because I know I made the decisions based on my own theories or accepted risks.

4. Don’t beat yourself up

Shocking revelation: FPL involves luck! Putting the sarcasm aside, it is important to remember this. If you’ve spent a lot of time looking into various data sets and assessed a lot of options, you are bound to miss a haul here and there. Don’t blame yourself if you went with one player over another and missed out: if there was a solid reasoning for doing so, it was probably just bad luck that week.

5. Check the results once, at the end of the day

The impulse to check on the scores every five minutes can be strong, especially when your captain is playing. You may enjoy it this way, but I have found I prefer to get one update at the end of the day’s football. If it’s a bad week I find out in one go, quickly process it and move on. If it’s a good week then great! Waiting until all the football has finished actually brought back some enjoyment for me, as the anticipation become stronger across each day.

6. Start afresh each week

This is perhaps a bit obvious, but each Gameweek is a new opportunity. Good or bad, put last week behind you and consider the best way to maximise from here. Getting hung up on what went wrong led me to poor decision making and a sense of pressure to get it right this week.

I know not everyone will relate to this, but hopefully it will help some of you as I know from experience, it’s possible to be excited for and apprehensive about the new season! Keeping our mental health in check is important. If anyone wants/needs to talk across the season, I’m @lightspeed65 on Twitter. Just don’t ask me for team advice… it won’t help!

Good post, I often find myself filling in time with FPL to procrastinate and obviously I have a negative relationship with it because of that, important to try keep a balanced relationship with it.

1 FT, thinking of rolling it, thoughts:

    Ward
    TAA | Robertson | Cancelo | James
    Salah | Kulusevski | Martinelli | Andreas
    Haaland | Jesus

    Iversen | Dasilva | N.Williams | Archer

Other thoughts are trying to get Nunez in but it would probably be a -8 so thinking leave it a week and look at the -4 next week.

Like this post and this kind of content - let’s face it, there are more than enough articles and resources to say which players to get and it gets very boring, not least because I like to watch all the games and make my own conclusions.

Set myself a non-OR goal of how many green arrows I can get this year after a gw1 horror show. Trying to get a third top 5k finish in 5 years is virtually impossible now and to make that the target is only going to lead to frustration.

Haha true, although I was shocked last week to find a three time work league winner didn't know a player had to rise .2 to gain .1 in resale stock.

Already did for Dasilva last night to catch his price rise. Had 2 FTs with no obvious moves and Dasilva is 2nd bench so not a big deal if dropped, provided 0.5m extra in the bank!

I already did because I needed 0.5 for (most likely) goalkeeper upgrade and Neto is still a better pick than Bailey. He was a short term punt and it failed, so no hard feelings. Dasilva is just a bench fodder and my 5th mid.

Moved for Martinelli. Would have been happy to wait and see if other moves were needed but I think it makes most sense, Martinelli has been doing damage to me and given the upcoming fixtures and Arsenal's potency going forward, it's probably the wisest thing to do even if a bit boring. Still have money itb as well

Constantly referring to some players as 'elite' probably doesn't help some folk.

They're not really 'elite', maybe a bit better/lucky, but hardly 'elite'.

    7. Ignore all 'influencers', they're guessing just like you and I

I think the problem here is trying to find the right word for these sort of managers. I know the ones they're referring to. They're the "full-time" FPL managers, the ones who sometimes also create a lot of FPL content. Even now I can't think of the right word to describe them but there is a difference between those sort of managers and most that play FPL.

Lol yes I'm agreeing with you. Elite isn't the right word. Do Scout still use "pro-pundit"? That never felt right either. I think simply "Full-time" might suffice.

Erik in a state of disbelief?

Why wouldn't last season be bought into this one?

Especially without any decent signings. But there's over £420 million in transfer fees alone on the pitch.

    Dismal for United fans..

2 FT and 0.5 ITB. Any thoughts on how I get Kulu in for Bailey?

    Ramsdale
    TAA - Robbo - Cancelo - James - Perisic
    Salah - Martinelli - Bailey
    Haaland - Jesus

    Ward - Andreas - Murphy - Plange

Nearly my exact team but I do have Kulu. Don't think you can get to my team because of Perisics 0.1m drop but difference is:

Ramsdale, Perisic, Bailey > Iversen, N.Williams, Kulu

As Kulu is now 8.1 you'll need a 4.4 mil defender for Robbo or Cancelo.
The punty way to do that is to bet that Tomi gets back in the team at right back for Arsenal.
Or go the tried and tested Neco/Patterson route if you fancy them playing every week

Personally I'd swap out funds in Perisic to a 4.5 or 5 mil defender and use that for an upgrade

    Ward
    TAA, Cancelo, James, Perisic
    Salah, Diaz, Martinelli, Rashford
    Haaland, Jesus

    Iversen, Andreas, Neco, Archer
    2FT, 0.0 ITB

Obvious Rashford has to go (fell into the same trap of being a MU fan once again), but what else?

    A - Rashford -> Rodrigo
    B - Rashford, Perisic -> Rodrigo, Trippier/Walker
    C - Rashford, Perisic, Iversen -> Rodrigo, Trippier/Walker, Sanchez/Raya (-4)
D - WC (to bring in De Bruyne, Kulusevski, change Diaz for Darwin, etc.)
    E - your suggestions

Pretty annoyed by the mahrez drop but he's gonna have to go regardless right? Far from guaranteed minutes and can't even get involved in a 4 goal rout. Frustrating as well because he looked very involved early on in the match.

Yeah, just not worth it. Only 15 starts last season, even with his propensity for double-digit hauls when he starts, 8m is too much for the infrequent nature of those performances

Apologies if already been asked, but do you know why Dasilva was subbed off early. Assume it was just tactical?

Game was won and both teams made full use of the bench in the heat.

Getting back up to full fitness. His injury was a bit of a weird one so guess they are being careful with him. Expect it to be a common theme.

Did a Kurt Zouma after “Differential Digne’s” own goal yesterday.
This article has helped me remember that FPL is just a game and there are more important things in life.

He was picked out by Frank before the season began as one that he expects to "step-up" in the need for creativity after Eriksen's departure so he should be fairly good. Not sure I'd go picking him mind, 0g1a all last season and while he had a nice haul yesterday, the goals were strange and awful from ManUtd's point of view, he won't get that assist or goal in many games in his career.

Helps to switch off once the deadline's gone and just let the weekend play out. You can't change your team and rank isn't too important this time of year. First thing I do when the game updates is see how my team looks for next week and just concentrate on that. And if you don't have thick skin then just ignore the community forum. You're never going to stop the roasters lolling at each like a bunch of ten year olds.

I'm much the same, I see so many here constantly looking at live ranks and I don't get it. You're going to agonise over something that's going to fluctuate in the moment and for days to come which you can have absolutely no impact on. Just look towards the only thing you can impact which is next week.

I've seen a fair few around here saying they can't enjoy football because of FPL, if I ever feel that then I'm putting it down. The only game I watched yesterday was Brentford v ManUtd and I enjoyed the hell out of it for its hilarity, but I benched Dasilva for some reason even though my gut said to play him over Bailey. Did his goal ruin the game or my enjoyment of watching it? Nah, just moved on because nothing to be done at that stage.

Even better to ignore the community if you’re a Manchester Utd supporter

This season I have tried to follow a philosophy of picking players I like and I think are exciting, accepting the fact that some of them might not be the best fpl wise. It has given me a fairly unique team - I find it a bit dull ending up with a team pretty much the same as everyone else’s and I think it ramps up the pressure as the difference between how well your team does compared to others probably comes down to individual picks - which in the first week actually ended up doing fairly well. By following the philosophy it removes some of the pressure and the desire to make lots of transfers as I have a strong reason for picking the players in the first place. The downside is I have rashford and sancho and nketiah. I’m trying to resist the obvious urge to transfer these players, by using my subs (dasilva, sessegnon, Mitchell who are all low cost starters that fit the philosophy). I feel that if I can navigate my team through this rough patch - im holding onto the hope that the approach to Liverpool is quite different to Brentford and I only need sancho and rashford to get a goal and assist, regardless of how many goals go in at the other end - there will be greater satisfaction.

    1 FT 1 mill ITB.
Think I will use my wildcard and get the following team. Any suggestions or comments on the team I've picked?

    Current:
    Ramsdale
    Cancelo - TAA - James - Cash
    Salah - Martinelli - Bailey - Diaz
    Haaland - Jesus
    (Ward - N. Williams - Dasilva - Andreas

    Wildcard:
    Mendy
    Walker - Robertson - Saliba
    Salah (c) - Kulu - Martinelli - Gross
    Darwin - Haaland - Jesus
    (Ward - Dasilva - Dan Burn - N. Williams)

    Thanks a lot:-)

How will the Word Cup impact fpl? I’ve seen some comments saying that we would probably WC earlier but didn’t grt why.

Unlimited transfers during the world cup break. So 1st WC can be used to rebuild team sometime between now and then.

Games yet to be played of course but any early suggestions for this lot?

    Ward
    Trent, Robertson, Gabriel
    Salah, Martinelli, Bailey, Dasilva
    Kane, Haaland, Jesus

Iversen, Andreas, Williams, Dalot 2ft 0itb

Few players I want rid of, mainly Dalot and Bailey (more so due to the upcoming price drop) but the only way to free funds to find decent alternatives is to drop Robertson…

I think there is value long term in downgrading Dalot and bringing in a better keeper such a Ramsdale or Mendy
