We’ve put together our Scout Picks ‘bus team’ ahead of Gameweek 3 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

For those who haven’t seen this article series before, it’s a first draft of our regular picks, which get finalised and published much closer to the deadline.

We are limited to a £83.0m budget for our starting XI, while our bench is also price-capped after a reader vote – although we will continue to offer our ‘alternative’ substitutes in the final Scout Picks based on the old criteria.

READ MORE: Readers vote for the Scout Picks substitutes bench to be price-capped

The final picks will stay as they are and cement our weekly selection based on the Scout Squad long-list entries and fresh injury updates but this ‘bus team’ article – a term coined by the Always Cheating boys – will discuss the players who are likely to be in the running.

Off we go again, then, with our early thoughts on the runners and riders up for selection in Gameweek 3, followed by the preliminary picks themselves.

FPL points predictions for Gameweek 3 and beyond 3

THE LIKELY LADS

FPL pre-season: Jesus hat-trick and Saka on pens

Gabriel Jesus’ (£8.0m) 19-point haul in Gameweek 2 was the highest individual FPL return of the season so far, and it’s highly likely the Brazilian will return to Scout Picks duty for Arsenal’s trip to Bournemouth. In truth, he was unfortunate to miss out last time, with four entries in the Scout Squad, but the lure of Phil Foden (£8.0m) at home against newly-promoted opposition proved too much to resist.

Jesus’ seven shots in the box, three big chances, 15 penalty box touches and 1.91 expected goals (xG) can’t be beaten by anyone in Gameweek 2 so far, while opponents Bournemouth were fortunate that Manchester City took their foot off the gas in the second half on Saturday. Had they not, the damage would have been far greater than 4-0.

In a bid to combat the pace of Son Heung-min (£12.0m), Reece James (£6.0m) spent the majority of Sunday’s draw with Tottenham Hotspur lining up as a right-sided centre-half. However, when he switched to his usual wing-back role in the second half, fireworks followed, with a goal and a beautiful teasing cross which should have been converted by Kai Havertz (£7.9m). With a trip to Leeds United up next, a matchup he thrived in last year, he is surely one of the first names on the Scout Picks teamsheet this week.

While an away fixture at Old Trafford has traditionally been a tricky matchup for Liverpool, that hasn’t been the case in recent seasons. In fact, in their last three visits in all competitions, they have racked up a whopping 11 goals! Manchester United, meanwhile, have suffered back-to-back defeats under Erik ten Hag and are clearly struggling to adapt to his philosophy. Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m) and Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) feel like great picks for Gameweek 3, then, with the latter also in the captaincy conversation.

IN CONTENTION

The best FPL goalkeepers for a Double Gameweek 22 Free Hit 6

There will inevitably be representation from Tottenham Hotspur in Gameweek 3, having already won four points from losing positions in 2022/23. However, selecting one of their attacking wing-backs isn’t straightforward, with Emerson Royal (£5.0m), Matt Doherty (£4.9m), Ryan Sessegnon (£4.5m) and Ivan Perisic (£5.4m) all competing for starts.

Given that opponents Wolverhampton Wanderers are struggling to find the net without a recognised striker (they have scored just one goal from 2.73 xG across their two matches), we’ve landed on ‘keeper Hugo Lloris (£5.5m) plus Harry Kane (£11.4m) in our ‘bus team’, with Son Heung-min and Dejan Kulusevski (£8.1m) also in the mix for selection.

In addition to Jesus, Arsenal team-mates Aaron Ramsdale (£5.0m), Gabriel Magalhaes (£5.0m) or the cheaper William Saliba (£4.5m) will also be under consideration, while Bukayo Saka (£8.0m) and Gabriel Martinelli (£6.2m) could potentially form an attacking double-up. At this stage, it does feel like the latter is ahead, given his fast start to the season.

The final Scout Picks will very likely feature one or two Manchester City players, but who? There is an argument to back Harry Kane over Erling Haaland (£11.7m) this week, with a trip to Newcastle United by no means easy. Indeed, the Magpies have kept back-to-back clean sheets this season and have turned St James’ Park into a bit of a fortress under Eddie Howe.

A mid-price midfielder like Phil Foden or Ilkay Gundogan (£7.5m) over Kevin De Bruyne (£12.1m) perhaps seems more likely then, given our budgetary constraints, while at the back, it feels almost certain one of Joao Cancelo (£7.0m), Ruben Dias (£6.0m) or Kyle Walker (£5.1m) will make an appearance.

A Liverpool triple-up perhaps feels unlikely given others’ appealing fixtures, but if we do go down that route, it goes without saying that Andrew Robertson (£7.0m) or Luis Diaz (£8.0m) could join Alexander-Arnold and Salah.

Elsewhere, Marc Cucurella (£5.0m), Raheem Sterling (£10.0m) and Mason Mount (£8.0m) are all interesting options for Chelsea’s visit to Leeds, but away from the ‘big’ teams, there are a batch of interesting candidates to consider, too.

For example, James Maddison (£8.0m) and Jamie Vardy (£9.5m) take on a Southampton side that have conceded six goals in two games and aren’t in the best shape, while Aston Villa looked vulnerable against Everton on Saturday and have since lost Diego Carlos (£5.0m) to injury, raising the appeal of Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m) and Eberechi Eze (£5.5m).

Then there is Brighton and Hove Albion duo Pascal Gross (£5.6m) and Leandro Trossard (£6.5m), who could act as midfield enablers, given that West Ham United are still short of numbers at the back.

THE LONG SHOTS

FPL Gameweek 35 preview: Key player and team stats

There are plenty more options besides the players and teams mentioned above but they feature in this section for a reason.

If savings are needed, we might need to turn to a £4.5m keeper like Jordan Pickford, David Raya or Robert Sanchez, or perhaps defenders from the same teams like Vitaliy Mykolenko (£4.5m), Nathan Patterson (£4.0m), Ben Mee (£4.5m), Rico Henry (£4.5m) and Lewis Dunk (£4.5m).

Despite Leicester City’s shaky backline, Timothy Castagne (£4.5m) and James Justin (£4.5m) could also come under consideration, although James Ward-Prowse’s (£6.5m) deliveries from dead-ball situations could cause problems, an area the Foxes always seem to struggle in.

Nottingham Forest were the better side against West Ham United in Gameweek 2, raising the appeal of Dean Henderson (£4.5m), Neco Williams (£4.0m) and strike duo Taiwo Awoniyi (£5.9m) and Brennan Johnson (£6.0m), but they were vulnerable at the back, so caution is urged with their defensive picks.

Demarai Gray (£5.5m) or Anthony Gordon (£5.5m) could emerge as differential shouts then, but can we really trust a team without a genuine focal point up top? Probably not, given that their only goal so far this season was scored by an opposition player.

Jarrod Bowen (£8.5m), meanwhile, had an off-day at Forest, and there are surely more appealing, cheaper midfielders on offer in Gameweek 3, while Ivan Toney (£7.1m) and Aleksandr Mitrovic (£6.6m) are outsiders to be included up front.

Quite happy with the team, but don't wanna waste a transfer either, so what to do?

      Ward
      TAA, James, Gabriel, Cancelo
      Diaz, kulu, martinelli
      Kane, Jesus, Haaland
      Subs: Iverson, bailey, neco, andreas

      a) bailey to 4.5, save transfer and bank the 0.5?
      b) bailey to 4.5, iverson to Sanchez/Raya?
      c) Kane to Toney, diaz to salah, bailey to 4.5 (-4)?
      d) something else?

Jensen won't get you any more points than Bailey - it would be a waste of a transfer - unless it's part of a 2FT to get a better goalkeeper.

As I say, if you do it today, rather than just getting a player who's only good for the bench, use the 0.5 to sell Iversen for the likes of Sanchez, Raya or Henderson - and start the GK over Ward most weeks.

Oh right. Well he's a non-option anyway. Other than being gifted goals by United, he's scored like 1 goal and 0 assists in 2 years (can check the exact figure). You'd be equally well off with a 4.5 mid 'cos they should stay on your bench anyway.

As long as he stays fit (not a given) I reckon he's a good pick. Di very well for me at the end of last season. Potter says he's playing really well.

Basically this. Whilst a player with an injury record is a risk, most times it happens during the week and you can use a transfer (providing you're not an early transfer merchant).

Agreed injury is not a big issue as long as you have either some bench cover or fts. With all the subs , rotation risk with cameos is by far a bigger concern

Hi - I need to deal with Nunez so downgrading to Toney and freeing up some cash to upgrade Murphy or Bailey to Martinelli,
Should I use this as a chance to ditch Bailey and bank some cash or keep Bailey who is perhaps more likely to return than the cheaper Murphy - though whoever I keep will be on the bench?
      So sell:
      A - Bailey
      B - Murphy
      Thanks

As long as you’ve got other playing bench players, presumably cheap defenders then get rid of Bailey.

Can't bring myself to change this ahead of next GW. Am I being stubborn with the likes of Saka, Robertson and the Leicester goalies? 2 FTs going into GW4 looks good to me.

      1 FT 0.5 ITB

      Ward
      TAA - Robertson - Cancelo - James
      Salah - Saka - Martinelli - Andreas
      Haaland - Jesus

Foxes fan here. I am reserving one transfer for a different goalie in GW4 other than our pair of muppets. To be fair, I'd say the problems are with the collective defence rather than just the keeper.

Ye. That's my plan too, but think Southampton at home looks decent(ish) compared to the 4.5 upgrade for next GW.

What are your thoughts on Iversen getting a start? I think Ward will stay between the sticks, but it would suck to transfer out Iversen this GW just to see him getting the nod (and you would have wished that you sold Ward instead)
Also a reason for me to wait another GW

Rogers has stated that Ward is no 1, but I understand your slight hesitation. I'd expect Iversen to get a chance at some stage, but I doubt whether it will fix our defence. In theory, we have goodish players in there, so I guess it must be poor organisation.

Was already teetering on a wc with a 5-2-3 planned this week but Nunez and his mahoosive brain fart in last nights game is edging me ever closer to the inevitability of confirming.

Really don’t like ‘essential’ as a way of going about things fpl wise as there’s many ways of playing this amazing/infuriating game we get so obsessed with so I’ll word it like this.

If Wildcarding who would you guys (and girls) not want to be without in defence.

      Cancello
      James
      Trent ❓

Really can’t think of anymore tbh…..seems a very small list considering the clamour for 5 at the back pre season.

After only 2 GWs, we can't draw many firm conclusions, but the strongest pattern for me is City going through the season winning every game to nil. Not literally, but close to it. Therefore, I'd suggest doubling up on their defenders alongside a premium further forward.

Your rank will probably rank without Cancelo. Walker Cancelo double up to actually benefit from city clean sheets is where I’m at. They’re dominating everything

Fair but in general most people are just predicting things, we all get them wrong. There's more people coming on here after the week is over with hindsight and insulting others predictions than there are the spammers (assuming you mean foo tbf to him he did come on here last night and take his medicine)

Yeah. Diaz and Gundo definitely. Not sure if I’m sold on Arsenal keeping many clean sheets and whether Saliba offers much in the way of attacking returns.

Eric ten Haag to United was the same dumb move as Moyes and Rangnick. Manager with great performance leading good teams but no expirience with a top team. They will be fighting for relegation if the trend continues.

United would fall even deeper into their hole if they indulge ETH with his Ajax/Dutch buy-ins, only to sack him and leave the next manager with yet another layer of overpaid players he doesn't want.
If he stays he has to succeed in a no-win scenario - does he persist with his tactical set-up knowing, as Rangnik did, that the players can't do it, or does he abandon his principles and revert to Ole-ball? Either option is doomed to fail with Ronaldo in the side, and without him I don't think either will be successful. United need a new philosophy and 3 to 4 years in the midtable wilderness to rebuild. They actually had the right person to implement that - Rangnik in his consultant role.

United aren’t a ‘top team’ any more though.

Moyes would have done well there given time. It’s the poisoned chalice of United that’s a bigger issue than the quality of manager they bring in.

Moyes screwed himself by selling alot of the older players who still offered quality. He then replaced them with the like of Fellaini and played negative football. If he had played decent football, the fans would have kept faith with him. It's easier to accept a loss if you play exciting football, compared to parking the bus and still losing.

You obviously don't realise that whoever United appoint, will face the same issues. Even if Klopp or Pep were at United they'd still fail, given the behind the scenes issues. Jose, Van Gaal and Moyes were all proven and quality managers who struggled.

You can't always get a manager who has experience leading "top teams". After all, they have to start somewhere - there aren't many Zidanes who step straight into the Real job.

If they could deal with the burden of the club's baggage, they'd go back to basics, hire Potter, but players at a level that play for Brighton, and rebuild over a few years. They can't do that though - trapped by their own commercial priorities and expectations.

                              See two strategies here, thoughts?

                              1) No hit now, just solve Digne next week
                              2) Digne out for a hit now, potentially another hit involving Robo/Mount next week

                              Rambo
                              TAA/Robo/Cancelo/Neco
                              Salah/Mount/Martinelli/DaSilva
                              Haaland/Jesus

                              Ward/Digne/Pereira/Archer

                              The joys of FPL...

Went from comfortably rolling a transfer this week to taking a -4 post Darwin headbutt 🙂

                              Darwin > Toney
                              Walker > Cancelo

Saw it as a good opportunity to get the holy trinity of TAA x James x Cancelo once the extra 2.0m was freed up (4.5 and 4.0 are my other two).

Good moves or would you guys have done something different?

I’m not averse to a hit or two, but I’d have just done the Toney move.

Saved the 2.0 ready to use for GW3’s bandwagon/crisis/whatever.

Why did you get rid of Walker? Insane. Should have upgraded your 4.5 > Cancelo instead.

Exact funds with 2.0 ITB, otherwise this is what I'd have done. If an extra 0.5 / 1.0 presents itself going forward I will look to double up with Ederson or Walker.

I still wouldn't have done it. I prefer Mitro over Toney as well.

Best Trippier replacement(I can't bench him because I will play with 5 at the back)

Pulled the trigger on Bailey > Jensen mainly to avoid price fluctuations but also Brentford's fixtures look much better than any other option at that price. Now, do I play Jensen this week or play Neco against Everton?

                              Ward
                              James - Robbo - Taa - Cancelo
                              Salah - Mount - Aaronson - Jensen
                              Jesus - Haaland

                              Sanchez - Neco - Andreas - Greenwood

Probably Jensen. Andreas isn't a bad option this week either though.

Toying with the exact same but probably bench for Neco anyway so a tuff one!

Hi guys, who from these two to replace Bailey in a draft game?

                              A) Aribo
                              B) Jensen

                              Thank you

                                Aribo - much higher ceiling.

Walker to James for a -4?

Dont like the hit, but this is a transfer waiting to happen. Seeing
Sergio Gómez signed for ManCity its just a mater of time befor Walker loses he`s spot.

Salah and Bailey to Diaz and Maddison +2 in the bank?
