We round up the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from Leicester City v Manchester United in our Scout Notes summary.

The graphics below are taken from LiveFPL, Ragabolly’s excellent and ever-improving website, and our own Premium Members Area.

Jadon Sancho’s (£7.3m) first-half goal was the difference for Manchester United at the King Power Stadium, as a fragile Leicester City succumbed to a 1-0 defeat.

Sancho’s winner – a slick finish after a clinical breakaway involving Marcus Rashford (£6.3m) – means that he has produced two goals in his last three appearances.

“I am very happy for Jadon Sancho. He scored many goals in pre-season, now also he scores against Liverpool and today. He is getting his rewards. But it was a team goal, how we built it up from the back. It was a transition moment, a good pass and finish.” – Erik ten Hag

United are now up to fifth in the table after their third win in a row and are making progress as they get to grips tactically with Erik ten Hag’s demands.

Indeed, since losing their two opening games in such disastrous fashion, they have hit back with an impressive home win over Liverpool and ground-out 1-0 wins at Southampton and Leicester.

That’s coincided with back-to-back clean sheets, with Diogo Dalot (£4.4m) the pick of their defenders. The right-back claimed maximum bonus for a second successive Gameweek on Thursday and has created more chances (nine) than any other United player this season.

“The defensive skill is the base for winning games. It makes you hard to beat. We have to stick to that. I know we can be better. We were already better than at Southampton. I am sure we will improve on that fact. Pressing also needs room for improvement.” – Erik ten Hag

Gameweek 6 sees United host Arsenal before their UEFA Europa League campaign gets underway next week.

As for Leicester, they have now suffered four straight Premier League defeats and failed to win any of their opening five matches.

In that time, they have conceded 11 goals – only Bournemouth have allowed more – and to make matters worse, have lost key centre-halve Wesley Fofana (£4.4m) to Chelsea.

The Foxes have surprisingly conceded fewer shots than Brighton and Hove Albion this season, but are giving up far too many big chances, as highlighted below.

Above: only Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest have conceded more big chances than Leicester City this season

Brendan Rodgers will be hoping new signing Wout Faes (£4.5m), Reims player of the season last year, will help tighten them up.

So will Danny Ward’s (£4.0m) FPL owners, who have seen the budget ‘keeper average just 1.2 points per match across his five starts.

“We are disappointed with the goal. We were too open from the ball back – you have to close the game up in that moment. That’s the naivety within the squad.

The players kept going and gave everything but we lacked that craft and quality in the final third. I know we had James Maddison back, but that is not enough. They gave everything but it wasn’t enough.

Wardy [Danny Ward] has done great since coming in. When the ball goes back he needs angles from the centre-half and the centre-midfield player that can come back to pick the ball up, but when he chooses to clear it obviously he had to make sure he does that.” – Brendan Rodgers

“It is a poor start, that is the reality for us. We have circumstances that haven’t helped us, that is for sure. We won’t hide, I certainly won’t as it is my responsibility. We need to pick up our results. The window closing hopefully brings that focus and mentality back as one. We keep fighting. We just lack quality and we weren’t able to do anything about that in the window.” – Brendan Rodgers

Leicester City XI (4-3-3): Ward; Justin, Ndidi, Evans, Thomas; Soumare, Tielemans (Iheanacho 76), Dewsbury-Hall; Maddison, Barnes, Vardy (Daka 87)

Manchester United XI (4-2-3-1): de Gea; Dalot, Varane, Martinez, Malacia; McTominay, Eriksen; Elanga (Casemiro 59), Fernandes, Sancho (Ronaldo 68); Rashford (Fred 87)

Patterson is actually turning into quite a player. He was pretty immense vs leeds ie

"Nathan Patterson made more successful tackles (8/9), made more successful clearances (9/9) and made more headed clearances (6/6) than any other Everton player against Leeds United. "

Also while not as attacking as he could be i watched the game and he did have a huge chance that he should have scored right at the end and produces some high quality crosses that im hoping dcl(upon return) can convert. When everton's fixtures turn he could mop up the baps in that backline and I'm now going to be pretty comfortable with him coming off the bench in emergencies after gw7 since I'm now convinced he will play every game and is improving in every game too

This is the first time in 14 years of playing that I've seen a completely free and viable bench of

Ward (Leicester keeper.. that has to count for something once fixtures improve)

Andreas (Set pieces.. attacking.. and mitro to aim for)

Neco (One of the most attacking defenders in the game)

    Patterson (mentioned above)

Even if I find funds I won't be upgrading those 4 unless they get injured

Note that IL never start them ahead of my starting 11.. but they allow me to put all of my money on the pitch + handle a few injuries in my main 11 hence reducing -4s + come on for rotated players

      All that for free 🙂

I'm surprised he's continuing to keep Coleman out of the side (he's certainly getting on in years but he's still captain and Lampard spoke very highly of him after last season) but he must be playing well to merit that. I agree that Andreas is a great bench option but I'm still wary of the others. Ward just isn't very good and has a worse defence in front of him with Fofana gone, Neco is very attacking and will get some returns, but Forest are just conceding way too many chances each game so you're always running the risk of getting anything between 1 and -1 with him on any given gameweek, has been fine until now but when injuries and rotation pick up with busier schedules he may need to be relied upon more regularly. Patterson looks good as long as he keeps starting though for sure.

That spot is Pattersons now. Spoke to some everton fans and hung out in their forums for a bit. He has been one of their favorites this season. Thrown into the deep end from the first game and has improved every game. I won't be worried about his minutes at all... Clean sheets and attacking returns though seem to be a while away.

Neco and Forrest haven't really had a chance to show their worth with the fixtures they've had and the transfers in. Once everything settles down in a few weeks ie first 11 fixed + fixtures now turned they'll get a few CSs too. I think of Neto as an attacking mid though.. he just happens to be priced 4.0 and in defense. I'm annoyed he isn't taking set pieces anymore though since he was very good at them

Ward can Rot on my bench. however if my main keeper gets injured it means i can wait a week or two to use a free transfer/wait for him to come back. Usually if main keeper is injured it's a transfer that's needed straight away(unless backup is a 4.0 in the same team). That peace of mind itself is worth it.. even if it just leads to 1-2 points.

Good points. Good info on Patterson too, I think I may move Neco to him on WC. Things mat settle down for Forest but it's their style of play that is the issue, like Norwich they like to put numbers forward and leave themselves exposed at the back too often, the lowest number of shots they've conceded in a game was 16 and that was to City and they conceded 6 goals there, watching them play into Spurs' hands by inviting them to counter was worrying (luckily for them Spurs were wasteful and still don't look too convincing).

I honestly prefer neco over Patterson. That being said.. everton haven't looked horrid in defense and are conceding just a goal a game. In their run from gw 8 to get 16 i won't be surprised if they get 3 to 4+ cleansheets.. which is all one can ask for at that price.

The way i see it is with the number of options this year and the number of similar teams + number of players .. a cool head is needed to go up the ranks. This means a -4 is almost a crime. These bench guys will almost certainly prevent hits and help improve ranking in that way.

Very valid points. I still feel there is such good value in defence, I want 4 or 5 defenders I want to start most games, so happy to pay more than 4m. Ward and Andrea's will stay as bench fodder when I WC.

That's true. Fofana, Saliba(at 4.5) and Dalot look very underpriced and for just a few 0.4/0.5 above these guys offer a LOT more. I don't like benching headaches though 🙂 .. and i hate non playing 4.5 forwards and

*and 2 pointer mids ie lavia etc. Andreas is the only 4.5 mid id own. Atleast 4.0 defenders offer some hope of a CS in a good fixture.

Well with Andrea's and a good cheap defender on the bench, a 4.5 forward rotting at the end is harmless, and maybe enables that 5th defender to be better than Patterson. He'll never be used.

Once again a bit undecided on whether to move Bernardo to Sterling or not. Played 90 on Wednesday while most others had a rest (bar Gundogan), yet he's generally one of the most reliable for gametime, started 33 games last season which is actually pretty amazing given Guardiola's reputation in midfield in particular, only 2 players started more games than him (Ederson and Cancelo). Villa are awful too. Rodri and KDB starting is a given so for me it's about whether he or Gundogan starts with them, but then again Mahrez is normally saved for CL games so Bernardo may play at RW which is where he's spent a lot of time of late and been most productive. Still I feel Chelsea will pick up with players coming back / in and don't really have to worry about Sterling starting the majority of games and you know he'll be at LW/CF. I also like Chelsea's fixtures from an attacking viewpoint for a while. Thoughts?

There's Aubameyang to think about with Sterling now (not necessarily a bad thing, just saying). I've got Bernardo, will def be holding. At that price he doesn't need to play 90mins, just come for an assist or even goal is fine

      1. Nate(U)dog(ie)
        • 5 Years
        3 years, 6 months ago

True, but in one of those key spots I'd be really hoping for some returns from him (especially in a year where we're seeing teams with few differentials). I don't think Aubameyang detracts from Sterling's potential, actually I probably prefer the idea of Sterling playing on the left anyway as it's where he's gotten the majority of his goal involvement over the years from, and having a striker there that can finish your created chances can't hurt. Not sure how long Aubameyang will be out for with hid broken jaw though

I would do the swap. Chelsea have had a slow start but like I said pre season, all of their 'easy' games were away from home.

Sterling seems to be becoming the main man now, so would expect him to be involved in most games, whereas Bernardo has the potential to miss the returns for weeks on end.

Also high likelihood that Bernardo is rested. I think RW rotation is Alvarez and Mahrez, LW is Grealish and Foden. Bernardo is going to rotate as part of the middle 3, which would suggest he is out for KDB vs Villa.

      1. Nate(U)dog(ie)
        • 5 Years
        3 years, 6 months ago

Cheers, maybe I'm letting this coming GW cloud my mind a bit given the likelihood of Haaland being rested and thus taking Alvarez out of contention for the RW spot. Perhaps isn't a coincidence that Bernardo's more attacking role has come while Grealish is out, and it sounds like he'll be in the squad tomorrow. I suppose if the Sterling move fails I can always drop down, the other way around is certainly more difficult

    3. Valar(Keith)
      • 16 Years

Sterling is non negotiable in my team tbh. A premium priced an awkward price which prevents people from buying him (will make him a differential all year long) and can be captained once in a while too.. He is chelsea's main man even with auba coming in. As long as you can afford him alongside 2 of Salah/Haaland/Kane/Kdb I'd say he is worth it. I still wouldn't own him INSTEAD of 2 of those 3 though

      1. Valar(Keith)

With Haalands form I think there's an argument you only need 1 of those 4 now.

        1. Valar(Keith)
          • 16 Years
          3 years, 6 months ago

True. I'd still rather Salah/Kane over sterling though for eg. Il adjust my statement to Sterling for me is the perfectly priced 3rd premium alongside Haaland and 1 of Salah/Kane/kdb 🙂

            • 16 Years
            3 years, 6 months ago

Basically, you need patience for someone like sterling. The hauls will come.. but so will the frustrating misses.. if you rely on him too much then frustration will set in and an upgrade to one of those premiums and will feel necessary. As a 3rd premium I can give him some leeway and downgrade to Diaz etc if he gets injured /bad fixtures etx

              • 5 Years

It'd be alongside Haaland and Salah, yeah (although I'm still contemplating losing Salah, although at earliest it'll be during their really tough run after Wolves). But I'm OK with keeping for a while, I know he can be frustrating but I think they have a nice run of fixtures for attackers for a while so the idea would be to keep him for the foreseeable future.

Chelsea has a great run of fixtures up to the World Cup. If they start playing well over the next 3 games, I'll load up on my GW8 wildcard. But I will need to see evidence things are clicking.

Getting on Darwin early is a punt but could pay off. Zaha a decent punt. You’ve missed the boat on Martinelli

After some opinions from you fine folk. Currently on my WC and setting up as a 442, now considering a 352 by swapping out Walker, Mo and Andreas for a 4.4m defender, Sterling and Luis Diaz.

Still gives me pool coverage but with benefit of Sterling as well, but big decision taking Mo out. Thoughts welcome

Possibly, think he could do well. Might hold as don’t see him starting this week

Does Bernardo start or Mahrez comes back? These Man City midfielders are a minefield…

Yeah exactly - Bernando in good form and priced well but could be rotated. Who knows.

I have Brute Bernado and am happy to roll the dice. I just love watching him play and his presence in mine team brings joy. Ask me again though if he’s benched.

I just bought him as a replacement for Rodrigo so inevitably he’ll get benched. Apologies in advance!

What to do with this team?

    Sanchez, Ward
Cancelo, Saliba, Alexander-Arnold, James, N. Williams
Salah, Luis Diaz, Rodrigo, Martinelli, Andreas
    Haaland, Jesus, Greenwood

2 free transfers and 0.8 in the bank.

    Thank you!

Rodrigo out for a cheap and cheerful £4.4 type mf and upgrade Greenwood to Mitrovic perhaps?

Kind of tempted to do some mad Haaland out move! Not necessarily for kane, maybe downgrade to get in kdb for Rodrigo

Hello lads - Who'd you rather own?

    A) Toney and Bernado/Gross/Tossard?

    B) Darwin and Jensen (he'd be bench coverage)

    C) Zaha and Mitro

Have two FTs and weighing up above options as I have Rodrigo to transfer out.

Quite like Isak too (instead of Toney for option A)but he's flagged so might hold off a week.

No point holding onto Rodrigo anymore. Cash out and take the profit if you got him in early as his price will plummet.

If you're stuck around that price point then Gross is the best option. It's a boring pick but Brighton's next 3 games are very good
