James Maddison‘s (£8.2m) injury-time theatrics on Saturday means that he’ll now be banned for Gameweek 12 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

Sitting in around 20% of FPL squads before he collected his fifth booking of the season, he has already been sold by over 700,000 Fantasy managers as we approach Tuesday’s deadline.

For those owners who are still umm-ing and ahh-ing over a possible replacement, we turn to the underlying numbers, the Season Ticker and Rate My Team’s projected points – all of which can be found in our Premium Members Area – for assistance.

We’re limiting the field to midfielders priced at £8.3m or less for this article, although of course there’ll be some owners of Maddison who will be redistributing funds around their team in order to get to the likes of Mohamed Salah (£12.7m).

MADDISON REPLACEMENTS: GOAL THREAT

Looking at the last six matches for £8.3m-and-under midfielders, it’s Jarrod Bowen (£8.3m) who leads the way for shots in the box (16).

A dozen of these efforts came from Gameweeks 8-10, with the favourable fixture swing for West Ham United unsurprisingly resulting in an upturn in Bowen’s numbers.

The winger has still only had three ‘big chances’ all season, however, one of which was a penalty in Gameweek 10.

Leading the way for those big chances among sub-£8.4m midfielders is Leandro Trossard (£6.9m), over the last six matches (five) and in 2022/23 overall (six). Four of those gilt-edged opportunities arrived in the Liverpool game alone.

Mason Mount‘s (£7.7m) numbers are worth monitoring under Graham Potter. Since the new Chelsea boss first took charge of the Blues in the Premier League in Gameweek 9, Mount has had eight shots in the box and created eight chances – an improvement on what he was producing under Thomas Tuchel but an admittedly small sample.

MADDISON REPLACEMENTS: ASSIST POTENTIAL

Bowen can’t be beaten by any other sub-£8.5m midfielder for chances created in the last six matches, although not one of those 14 key passes led to a ‘big chance’. His expected assists (xA) tally is just 0.56 from those chances created, a number trumped by over 40 other midfielders.

Contrast that with Pascal Gross (£5.8m), who has supplied five big chances to Bowen’s zero. Of the £8.3m-and-under options with a fixture in Blank Gameweek 12, Gross has the highest xA over the last six matches and indeed over the whole season.

Roberto De Zerbi’s declaration that Adam Lallana (£4.9m) will start against Nottingham Forest tonight does raise a bit of concern over whether it is Gross he may replace, however.

Is Martinelli or Saka out for a -4 worth it to field a full 11?

I will lose funds, want whoever I transfer out back again next week, and whoever I get in will need an attacking return to cover the -4...

Despite his good fixtures, I am debating getting rid of Zaha as he has done nothing since the transfer window closed. If I did, I would bring in Mount (or possibly Saka). The problem is, Mount's fixtures are tougher and despite an uplift in form for Chelsea since Potter took over, I am not overly convinced by Chelsea. My planned moves were going to be Maddison to Foden (GW13), Neco to Saliba (GW14) and then I would have 0.8m in the bank to upgrade else where too. I have 9 players for this GW. I could just sell Maddison now for Mount/Saka (-4) and then do Zaha to Foden next week. Stick to the original plan and avoid a hit or lose my patience and take the hit to get rid of Zaha next week and have an extra player this week?

I have Zaha as well. Watched both of their last 2 games after bringing in and yeah he is a very frustrating player to own. His playing style is not good and he always overdoes things. Fixtures though are still very good and will at least keep him for few more gw's.

Hmmmmm I need to think about this. I may just stick to 9 players for this week.

Think it may depend on patience.

Palace's problems have been being bossed in midfield. Can't see much joy from either Wolves or Everton who are both very solid there. The "run in" from WH (always a fixture with plenty of goals) looks more promising.

Have sold fwiw but kept Eze who I suspect may be the better asset and almost certainly better value anyway.

My level of patience is correlated with the number of points I get each week 😉 I will think about it. If I want to bring both Saka and Foden in, Maddison will need to go too so then I will need to decide who goes in what order.

Leave Zaha for this game then sell for Saka

      1. The Big Fella
        • 9 Years
        3 years, 5 months ago

Yeah I am tempted by Saka more than Mount the more I think about it. I was going to use the 0.8m to upgrade Wilson to Jesus but as he is on 4YC and Saka has both form and fixtures (with Mount only having form), I think he may be the better option. My transfers in would be Foden, Saka and Saliba for Zaha, Maddison and Neco then. Plus I would still have 0.1 in the bank.

On WC - Thoughts on going for VVD or saving money and getting Dunk for a one week punt. That means I could then do Trossard to Foden/Saka for GW13.

Also do you prefer Kepa or Guaita? Already have Guehi. Palace better fixtures, Chelsea better team with Kepa inform

Go Dunk if it enables you to bring in Foden/Saka. And I prefer Guaita due to risk of Kepa rotation.

Would appreciate some help here please with 2 FT:

    A) James, Maddison -> Robertson, Trossard - field 11 players but assume Greenwood does not feature so really only 10
    B) James, Maddison, Greenwood -> Guehi, Bailey, Darwin (-4)

    Rest of the side:

    Guiata
    Trippier, Dier, Dalot, XX
    Salah(c), Zaha, Andreas, XX
    Mitrovic, (Greenwood)

    Iversen, Cancelo, Martinelli, Haaland

Would you get VvD or someone cheaper (Wolves defender)

If I pick VvD then I have to bench Guehi who has great fixtures upcoming GWks: Eve, Sou, Whu and Nfo and could easily play him. Have too Guaita so would be doubling up Palace defence.

Same dilemma here, wondering is it worth it to take a -4 to get a defender.

I guess you have to look at the player you replace with, whether it is likely will earn you at least extra 4 point in the next couple of fixtures

    Attack the fixtures:
My team is appalling and in need of an overhaul which I was going to do this Saturday. But I’m now thinking that this gameweek’s fixtures are good enough to attack. My strategy is ‘No Salah’ but spread his money to bring in TAA next generation and Nunez this week for attacking coverage. I like Sinisterra too - great next 3 fixtures. So what do you think of:
Maddison and Mitrovic to Sinisterra and Nunez?
