Halloween may be over nine months away but, if you want to truly frighten a Fantasy Premier League (FPL) manager, two words should easily do the job. Wout Weghorst.

You see, the question isn’t so much ‘who is Weghorst?’ but more ‘why does Weghorst want to keep causing pain?’

His half-season at Burnley ended in relegation, two goals and multiple Double Gameweek failures, although the subsequent loan to Besiktas has been productive enough to persuade Manchester United into a loan move until the end of the season.

So can the 30-year-old forward provide adequate cover and is there a realistic chance of FPL redemption?

We’ll attempt to answer those questions below.

THE HISTORY

كيف تخطط لـ الدوبل جيم ويك في الجولة 26؟ 6

Upon last year’s £12m transfer to Burnley, we provided a Scout Report on Weghorst’s career so far.

A spell at Heracles led to AZ Alkmaar, who he joined in the summer of 2016 before proceeding to score 35 times over two seasons.

This tempted Bundesliga side Wolfsburg to sign the 6ft 6in giant and enhance his reputation further thanks to 59 goals and 19 assists over the next three-and-a-half campaigns.

His rate began to slightly tail off as 2021/22 progressed and Wolfsburg were hovering just above the drop zone. To mix things up, in came Jonas Wind and Max Kruse, enabling Weghorst to move to the Premier League.

Leaving one relegation battle for another, the Dutchman’s new club suddenly had a lot of Double Gameweeks on the horizon. Indeed, two were in succession.

One goal and 14 points arrived during Double Gameweek 26, meaning over 971,000 managers bought Weghorst and 676,000 captained him for Gameweek 27’s matches against Crystal Palace and Leicester City.

He blanked in both, bringing in a measly three points. It was part of an eight-match goalless run, although the upcoming Double Gameweek 31 ensured ownership barely dropped – in fact, he was the most-bought player heading into the double. Yet still nothing, just three points.

At this point, the FPL community ditched the now infamous Weghorst en masse. He naturally then scored in Double Gameweek 33, before ending the campaign as a Burnley substitute.

Still owned by the Clarets, Weghorst has had a good time in Turkey and came off the bench to score two dramatic goals against Argentina in their World Cup quarter-final.

PLAYING STYLE

Similar to the likes of Peter Crouch and Andy Carroll before him, Weghorst is initially judged on his height. Whilst it’s not entirely unfair to assume he succeeds because of aerial dominance, modern-day forwards can’t rely on that alone. Weghorst has other qualities.

“There’s little doubt that Weghorst is a traditional target man who can happily play with his back to goal if called upon, but he can also play as a very effective number nine too. His sheer physicality should help a lot in the Premier League. He’s also got an excellent eye for goal and is rarely wasteful in front of goal.

“It wasn’t so long ago that he was being linked with a move to Tottenham as a potential replacement to Harry Kane. And while I’m not sure he’s as good as the England striker, they are similar types of players. Or at least Weghorst is like the younger Kane, when he was still a number nine.” – Stefan Bienkowski, speaking to Lancashire Live in January 2022

“People see his height and presume he’s someone who flicks it on, wins the ball in the air and who you throw balls into the box for, but he’s better than that.

“He presses the ball really well – which is what everyone in the Bundesliga needs to do – and it feels like an excellent fit.” – Bundesliga journalist Matt Pearson, speaking to the i newspaper

His two Burnley goals were a lot less than the expected goals (xG) tally of 5.15. From his Gameweek 23 debut up until Gameweek 38, only three players underachieved by more.

At first glance, adding such a tall forward will please owners of Luke Shaw (£5.1m) and Christian Eriksen (£6.3m) but Man Utd are the league’s worst side for crossing the ball and having attempts from set plays.

Data collected from our Members Area

WHERE WEGHORST FITS IN AT MAN UNITED

So, although clearly not ten Hag’s preferred style, Weghorst now gives him a Plan B against more stubborn defences.

“I think in the balance of the offensive [players], he really fits in. I am really happy and I don’t think we had the type what he is. Most importantly, he can score goals from everywhere and he was always a surprise at every club, in every league.

“That is also what I expect here. For here, I expect a team player and someone who can link up, a player who will do his defending work and we are really happy to sign him.” – Erik ten Hag speaking to the Man Utd website

Such good hold-up play will also be good news for Marcus Rashford (£7.1m), although his FPL ownership is currently so high that only captaincy will provide a significant rank boost.

Weghorst will begin this loan spell as a backup to Anthony Martial (£6.6m) but the Frenchman is notoriously injury-prone and was even forced off at half-time during Saturday’s Manchester derby.

It’s an immediate reminder that Weghorst might see quite a lot of pitch time, especially as Man Utd are the only English side still in four competitions.

IS WEGHORST WORTH BUYING IN FPL?

Using the fixture planner of Legomane, which goes beyond the Premier League, we can see just how congested their schedule looks.

Carabao Cup semi-finals, FA Cup clashes and a two-legged Europa League tie with Barcelona are all imminent. Squad management will therefore be a factor, potentially ruling out Weghorst as an FPL option unless a significant injury crisis crops up.

All it would take, however, is a spell on the sidelines for Martial, at which point Weghorst may become a valid option for our frontlines.

Those at FPL headquarters have handed him a £6.0m price tag.

Next week target is Mitoma. I am thinking of selling KDB, as he has lower xG than Mahrez. What do you think?

    A. KDB (£££: every player at every position becomes affordable with single transfer - no hits needed)
    B. Mahrez (lower xMin)
    C. Someone else.

    Kepa / Ward
    Trippier, Shaw, White, Botman, Patterson*
    Martinelli, Rashford, Almiron, KDB, Mahrez
    Kane, Mitrovic, Haaland

        Agreed. Keep KDB.
Who would you want to transfer in, in the future, with all that extra money in the bank?
Mahrez -> Mitoma still gives you plenty £ ITB to make future moves.

I think the transfer is the point, not the money itb. Mitoma is outscoring KDB. If City are still in a funk after Spurs I think its fine to sell either one

Exactly this. Everyone else in my team is scoring more points than KDB. I expect Mahrez to outscore KDB... hence he is the one I was looking to sell.

Who do you think will score more: KDB or Mahrez or Mitoma?

Yeah, but with KDB you get assured starts. And that's with DGW23 in mind, so another way of phrasing the question is:
Who gets more minutes in the next few gameweeks; Mahrez or KDB?

With their fixtures I would definitely consider a castle defender. Can rely on clean sheets and bonus points.you could also consider shaw, tough fixture against arsenal but then has a brilliant run. Will probably move back to LB from CB with Martinez getting more game time too.

Schar for me as above. Akanji has little goal threat so only looking for clean sheets and City a bit leaky at the back. Newcastle have a good run of fixtures and equally likely to hold clean sheets imo with an increased goal threat with schar

OR 2M. I have to wildcard to even stand a chance of top 100K, right?

    New team;
    Kepa, Ward
    Trippier, Shaw, White, Burn, Bueno
    KDB, Rashford, Odegaard, Martinelli, Andreas
    Haaland, Kane, Toney

    0.3 ITB.

Players out: Cancelo, Robbo, James, MacAllister, Almiron, Darwin, Mitro.

Annoying that I took on MacAllister after the WC WC thinking my team would tick me over until his return but I can't take this further collapse anymore. Rank 5.9M in the "second chance" league. Awful!

    1. Mirror Man

Just used my FT, g2g without taking a hit? Given im chasing about 70pts, should I look to KBD for captain rather than Haaland or too early for that?

Too early for that imo, will have to be pretty brave to captain KDB over haaland, KDB hasn’t been in amazing form. Risk reward though like you said if behind in points. Would wait in that regard however don’t think that would be the best way to claw back. Try and get some differentials (eg march over Almiron?) over KDB (C) over haaland

No, though City's form is down on early season, poor value right now. Haaland still scoring a few goals though picking up a few yellow cards to diminish bonus potential. Opposition have him and City sussed more than early season. Their squad have more World Cup playing minutes than any other, possibly fatigue is a factor for those involved and Champions League around the corner. If City don't pick it up on Thursday then, after next GW, could look to ship De Bruyne to likes of Odergaard or punt on Mudryk or Gakpo.

Looking at Doosra's Deadly Assassins table: sorted by shots on target in their last 4 matches

Surely capping Toney vs Leeds now, but I won't cap him against a team that sits back

Fwiw, Darwin's actually leading for shots on target, with 9. Toney's second with 8. Five interesting names tied with 7, including JWP and the Arsenal man people aren't rushing for

Haaland's next with 6, tied with Mitro and co. This is interesting because Haaland's shot volume is still high, but something's happened to the accuracy. Definitely a temporary blip, imo

March seems marginally more accurate than Mitoma when both are playing as inside forwards, with March leading significantly for assist potential

      1. Ze_Austin
        • 7 Years

Salah's a bit further down, with 4 on target. His shot volume is down a bit, so the persistent accuracy issue is showing itself. All his shots have been inside the box in those 4 matches and he still carries assist potential, so he's never too far away from a haul

              What? How so?
He's scored four goals in his last 4 games for Arsenal, a season total of 7. That's the same as Martinelli, Saka and Odegaard, but in fewer matches.
Eddie's usually very clinical in the box - the only blip was those two chances against Spurs, but he does so well to get in those positions.

The biggest problem is the plethora of strikers you'd want in your team.
Haaland, Kane, Mitro, Wilson, Toney and now maybe Eddie. (Darwin for some)

Well done for picking that as your key takeaway.
Doesn't it just show you that he's in form?

He did it at the end of last season as well. Replaced Lacazette and scored 5 goals towards the end. He's doing it again now and is an assured starter as long as Jesus is out.

Both good right now. Think March could be a good Almiron swap. Get him on the rise as Almiron form is dipping. Wilson, Isaak and St Max gonna dip into his share of the spoils.

            Very much agree!
The thing that may swing me towards March is the added corner duties from March.
Been keen on Mitoma for the past 4 gameweeks though, so it's tough to change that mindset. Does March have any proper rotation threat?

Goal threat is close. Very close. It's the assist potential that swung me towards March

I don't think Mitoma's capable of losing the eye test against anybody outside, say, 10 world-class left-wingers on the planet atm

So I'm treating this like the Arsenal mid situation: the "best answer" will change every few GWs, so I'll pick and stick until something becomes clear enough

Yeah, you're right. Next week could be Mitoma to haul, with March being more quiet.
What's interesting is the possibility of a double-up for the coming gameweeks, especially if Almiron is a possible transfer out.

I picked Rodrigo for this gameweek though, so sticking with him for next few matches. But either Mitoma/March is coming in for Andreas!

March is more dangerous and his end product improved.. Mitoma is more exciting thought he is just electric.

I checked their stats comparison over last 6 GWs yesterday and March blitzes it, especially in regard to chances created and baps. Would need to check how much that is swayed by last 2 games.

Mitoma definitely looks more dangerous, but the numbers are heavily stacked in March's favour at the moment.

      A- Mitrovic > Toney

Be careful of 25 blanks, you don't want to spunk your FH on 25. You have 4 blankers from this lot and probably a couple in defense. Do you want to add another?

Guess you need to bank this week and wait for results in FA Cup Round 4 + first legs of Carabao. If it looks like Newcastle are progressing you will need to take a call if you are using your FH in 25.

Yes save makes sense tbh.. FH 25 doesn't look good imo. May start getting rid of 3rd newcastle /united spots and may be toney too if ge got banned with FTs and save FH for another blanks/doubles.

      Almiron
      22/23= 9G 2A
      21/22 = 1G 0A
      20/21 = 4G 2A
      19/20 = 4G 2A
      18/19 = 0G 2A

The position hasn't changed. As a Newcastle fan who has watched all of those matches I can tell you that Almiron has missed guilt edged chances regularly throughout his time here. He is an awful finisher. I took a risk he wouldn't continue firing after Xmas and didn't bring him in which has paid off quite well so far.

      March
      22/23= 4G 6A
      21/22 = 0G 2A
      20/21 = 2G 2A
      19/20 = 0G 1A
      18/19 = 1G 6A
      17/18 = 1G 3A

March on the other hand appears to have moved from RM, to RWB, now to RW/RF. Being critical (of him as an FPL asset not a player) the first goal vs Liverpool was shoddy defending - very few teams will be so open vs a dangerous Brighton, 2nd goal was am unreal goal (good confidence builder but can't imagine many more like that going in) and the assist was luck rather than skill.

I guess the question I'm asking is are there any Brighton fans who have watched him over the years who can shed a bit of light on the likelihood of him keeping this up as I admittedly don't know much about him as a player.

I rarely go for these little run midfielders who go on the odd run.

But somehow I've ended up with Rodrigo and Mitoma in my team, who you could argue fit the bill. But Rodrigo OOP (feels a little Nathan Redmond) and Mitoma will be on the bench a lot.

To answer the question: I see March going the same way as Almiron - numbers will drop off in due course.

        1. TheTinman
          • 10 Years

Rodrigo is different as he is OOP. Keep an eye on him though, Rutter signed and Bamford back getting mins.

He will start to get 70mins or so per game and eventually could drop into the CAM role which I think doesn't suit him very well.

(Not a Brighton fan, but...) I certainly dont remember him as much of a goal threat at WB, more of an occasional assister. A quick look at previous season's stats show a shot every 80mins or so, 1-2 big chances per season & an xG around 1.5.

But I'm a firm believer that you have to look at a much wider context that just these stats. The change in position, manager, and improvements in the BHA team over recent years are all big enough factors to shift these numbers. I would say the same for Almiron - I'm not really expecting a regression to "the norm" of past seasons, because he wasn't serviced with Trippier & Bruno

Want to replace Digne for another defender. Have about 6.7 to spend, problem is aside of Newcastle, Arsenal and Shaw are there any defenses that appeal?

Newcastle and Brighton potential blanks in 25 and 28 (in case of Brighton) dampen their appeal. The other alternative is to play all 4 of White, Shaw, Rashford and Odegaard in GW21 and roll a FT.

Wonder if RLewis plays on Thursday.

As a City fan, I hope he does as I think he is possibly our best RB option currently. In FPL terms, I've got Botman on the bench so would rather he didn't.

Can't see us keeping a clean sheet on Thursday. 3-1 win though.

Besides a loss of confidence (see the two foul throws against SOU) but tactically we are playing very different this year. Foden and Mahrez are hugging the touchline in the wingers positions, rather than flooding the midfield and coming inside like they normally would.

So the RB is playing as an inside midfielder but the RB is simply staying back or moving into midfield. There's no room for him (or Ake when he plays) to move forward as much as they have in the past.

I bought Kane and Son for one reason - I expected them to score in both games and these two could very much be involved. And they were close to getting more points, but Ramsdale was on fire.

Some good whispers about Danilo, Forest's new DM

FPL significance is that he might improve the team like Bruno G did at Newcastle, and Casemiro at Man U, so it might be harder to target Forest as a bad defence

Not saying the three players are at the same level, just a likely significant improvement on their respective teams

What is very weird, that I have noticed with City matches, is that City haven't actually been playing to his strengths. Specially last 2-3 matches, they don't play him through or look for him with crosses etc. as much as they did at the start of the season. So I think that has much to do with his scoring form lately as well. Think he will be back to his best, sooner rather than later.

The way they are playing atm, could also be down to Peps ego, trying to show they don't need Haalands goals to win matches etc. Usual Baldy arrogance.

This. Our midfield has been terrible since the WC.

Everton showed they were relying too much on Haaland and nullifying him is half the battle. Most of that squad are showing signs of fatigue after the World Cup. They don't have the fear factor for other teams that they've had in previous seasons. Their current level is not as far ahead of the rest. Need to improve a lot if they're gonna push for the league and Champions League.

Risky. Yes, City is not looking sharp at the moment and Haaland´s numbers have dropped but with him there's always that feeling that it can kick off again in any given match... its scary af.

        Nothing is permanent.

But dropped? Don't think so, even though City have reverted to more of a pre-Haaland style

The home game against Wolves last season (1-0) was quite a struggle even with Jimenez sent off

Oops I actually missed the "wont" in your previous post, but anyway....
Fully agreed! Got me into some trouble earlier in the season but now is the time to whip out those differential captains

Totally ignoring price who do you think are the best midfield picks for the next few weeks?

Considering selling Salah for KDB but not hugely convinced by him and thinking Saka or Odegaard could easily outscore him.

Atm it is Saka/Ødegaard. Even March and Mitoma are better options than Kdb and/or Salah.

Looking at KDB - Ødegaard next week, which will leave me with no midfield premiums:
        Ødegaard, Martinelli, Rashford, Almiron, Mitoma.

        Priority sale, imo

Hall has started too many in a row now and looked better, while Cucurella has clearly been fit. He's been dropped

He seems to be out of favour so it’s a no from me.

In the case Darwin does play, who should I start him ahead of? Currently setup like this:

      Kepa
      Trippier Schar White
      KDB Rash Almiron Kulu Martinelli
      Haaland Mitro

      Kepa Darwin RLewis Bueno
