Here, seven-time top 10k finisher Zophar answers some of the week’s most-asked questions ahead of Gameweek 23.

The Double Gameweeks keep coming. We just received news yesterday of Arsenal, Everton, Liverpool and Wolverhampton Wanderers having a Double Gameweek 25 and, with this, many well-laid plans have been thrown into disarray.

In this piece, I look to answer some of the hot topics from the community.

Q: Is it worth bringing back Kevin De Bruyne this week or should I start saving transfers for GW25 now? (already have two Manchester City and three Arsenal players) (@Snipe367)

FPL friendlies round-up: De Bruyne and Haaland on target

A: There were several questions regarding Kevin De Bruyne (£12.4m) and Man City, so let’s try to unpack all of it. The recent financial issues that have come to light should be ignored, as we really don’t know what effect it will have on team performances – it could galvanize or demoralize them.

I do think De Bruyne gets restored to the starting line-up for both games in the double. The question is whether Bruno Fernandes (£9.9m) comes close to matching him, considering you’ll likely now want that spot for Mohamed Salah (£12.7m) by Gameweek 25.

I think Fernandes very well could but still think it’s worth buying another ticket in the Man City lottery, especially if it’s with a free transfer. For a hit, it’s trickier, because Bruno’s next two are against Leeds United and Leicester City, whilst De Bruyne might have a slight rotation risk for Gameweek 24. Being a very hit-averse manager, I’d probably just stick with Bruno.

I definitely wouldn’t bring in Riyad Mahrez (£7.7m) but De Bruyne is more of a 50-50 call. Tripling up on Man City should not be deemed ‘essential’ though, now that the Champions League is about to resume.

Q: What to do if you still have the Triple Captain chip? (@alvarolovesport)

FPL Gameweek 3 review: Guardiola on rotation as Rodrigo scores again

A: If these new doubles hadn’t been announced, I don’t think this would even have been a question, as Erling Haaland (£12.2m) would be the ‘no-brainer’ pick to use Triple Captain this week.

As it stands, I still think he is a better option than an Arsenal or Liverpool asset in Gameweek 25, as the Gunners spread their goals around a fair bit and Jurgen Klopp’s side just aren’t themselves, with Salah’s underlying numbers the worst they have been since returning to the Premier League.

If you still have the chip, play it on Haaland this week.

Q: What would you do if you had Fernandes, Ben White, Gabriel Martinelli and two Man City assets in your team? Is it worth using multiple hits to bring in De Bruyne, Gabriel and Bukayo Saka? (@iamgaurav_92)

FPL Gameweek 14 tips: Best players to sign, captains, predicted line-ups + team reveals 1

A: I do in fact have all of the above and Joao Cancelo (£7.1m) in my team, so this question is very relevant to me. Let’s talk about Arsenal first. Their two doubles in Gameweeks 23 and 25 – along with a confirmed fixture in 28 – means they are without a doubt the team to target.

It’s important to get the right assets in place and what we need to ask ourselves is whether it’s really a sideways move. With five games over the next three rounds, the potential to repay any hit is quite high.

In defence, should Ben White (£4.7m) be moved to Gabriel Magalhaes (£5.2m) for a hit? White has been subbed off over ten times this season but has still started every game. Admittedly, Takehiro Tomiyasu (£4.2m) was unfit for a large chunk of that period but it does still indicate that he is the first choice.

However, with many games over a short period, there is a chance of a random benching or early removal before the 60th minute. His attacking threat is quite underrated though, as he has been taking up fairly advanced positions in his partnership with Bukayo Saka (£8.3m) and is usually great for bonus points.

Gabriel offers great goal threat, so this is not a clear-cut call, but I think I’d still stick with White for now as I think he starts against Brentford and Man City.

Gabriel Martinelli (£6.6m) is a more interesting one. In terms of underlying numbers, he is not far behind Saka. Yet on the eye test, there is something a bit off, he isn’t getting into the same dangerous positions as earlier in the season.

I think he is missing the link-up with Gabriel Jesus (£7.9m), who naturally drifted wide and allowed Martinelli to take up more central positions. There’s also now the rotation risk with Leandro Trossard (£6.7m) threatening his minutes.

Gameweek 25 captaincy also comes into consideration, as I’d be much more comfortable handing the armband to someone like Saka over Martinelli and this makes such a hit more viable, to get the benefit over a longer period.

If you like the captaincy of Martin Odegaard (£7.0m) or Eddie Nketiah (£6.7m) instead, it becomes a bit less urgent but it would be unfair to call Martinelli to Saka a sideways transfer. It definitely feels like an upgrade.

Q: Should we prioritise having three Arsenal attackers (Nketiah, Saka, Odegaard) or two of these with a defender? (@fyutbawll)

Ramsey can provide cheaper route into Aston Villa attack 1

A: The team’s defensive numbers are still elite, so I do fancy having at least one defender from their backline. That would be Gabriel, without a doubt.

In attack, captaincy changes things a little bit. If you see yourself going with Salah in Gameweek 25, then I think you can opt for Odegaard and Nketiah for the value that they offer. However, with secure minutes and probable penalty duties, Saka is probably the standout captain option in Gameweek 25.

Keeping that in mind, I would rank their best attackers as Saka, Nketiah and Odegaard in that order, with Martinelli in fourth. Nketiah’s underlying numbers are elite and it depends on where you have a free slot – in midfield or up front – as I don’t think there’s much to split him and Odegaard.

I loved this stat from Neale’s article:

Saka, Martinelli and Odegaard have had just five ‘big chances’ between them in the last 11 league games – that’s as many as Nketiah has managed in Gameweeks 20-22.

Q: Any thoughts on underground assets from Everton, Wolves and that team with the curly-haired
Egyptian beardo who used to score a few goals, can’t remember his name…? (@fpl_wtf)

FPL Gameweek 15: Sunday's goals, assists, bonus and statistics

A: For Everton and Wolves, I think the investment has to be solely in defence. James Tarkowski (£4.2m) and Max Kilman (£4.3m) are the main options there.

Liverpool do have a few players returning to fitness soon, like Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m), Roberto Firmino (£8.0m) and Diogo Jota (£8.8m), so I am hoping we’ll see some improvement there.

As of now, it feels weird saying that Salah is not a ‘must-have’ but I still don’t see myself going with the Egyptian for Double Gameweek 25. Although Liverpool’s underlying numbers have actually been decent, Salah’s remain quite poor, as mentioned by Neale again:

A brief word on a quiet Mohamed Salah, whose tally of five shots in Gameweeks 19-22 is his worst four-match total since he joined Liverpool in 2017.

My Double Gameweek 23 team

It was a tough set of questions this week, with no real right or wrong answer. Man City are not the same team we have seen in previous years but are still capable of monster hauls.

With so many other teams having blanks and doubles, it’s one of the season’s most challenging phases and there are big rank gains to be made if you can get it right.

We will be discussing these dilemmas and macro-strategy more in-depth on this week’s episode of
The FPL Wire. You can check it out here:

Thanks and see you next week!

He'll come straight in for Nketiah but the question is when he'll be fit to start. Not sure that happens until the end of this month or early March

Not sure he comes straight in - after all it was a long injury, so I would expect them to share minutes at first.

The big question is if he will be ready for DGW25. If so, I think it makes Nketiah a non go already.

When he's fit to start, he will start. He's much better than Nketiah, but like I said, I'm not sure that's for a few weeks

Of course he is a better player and he will start all games eventually, this everybody knows.

The question is how long it takes for him to build his fitness fully - for now we don't know if it happens before/during/after DGW25, which makes choosing Nketiah tricky.

If we would know that Nketiah gets 2 starts in DGW25 then he immediately becomes a fantastic option.

What is the latest on him?

The fact he is running on the pitch doesn't mean anything yet and it would be extremely useful to know if he will eat Nketiah's minutes already in DGW25.

I saw info that Jesus should be available late Feb/early March which is pretty tight for DGW25.

Jesus is running in straight lines. He'll need to progress with increase of pace and change of direction to see how the knee responds. Still early days and has a high chance of re-injury if not careful

I'd go with camzy's prediction. He will need time to get matchfit and Eddie is more than capable back up so Arteta doesn't need to force him back.
That being said, if i have the choice get ode alongside saka and Gabriel. That's the most secure route.

Gw29 is after an international break. I just think it's a reasonable time for him to come back into the team. Although yeah, I expect him to start playing around GW26 or so off the bench as a sub.

City will likely have GW28 and 32 fixtures to rearrange. I agree it's not a done deal but folks may want to use another chip later in the season

    3. The Mentaculus
      • 4 Years

Feels very weird to agree with you over Zoph - but yeah, it looks very reductive to only consider 23/5 as the remaining TC opportunities. 3 big DGWs to come, plus some minor ones. Man City's BGW28 is almost inevitable, and you'd fancy them to keep progressing after Bristol C too to create 2 more Haaland TC opportunities.

    4. Silecro
      • 8 Years
      2 years, 12 months ago

They will have more doubles later on, but Champions League will also need to be factored in, making it more likely that Haaland will play less minutes or maybe be completely rested in one of those dgw games

    5. bench boost for every gamew…
      • 8 Years
      2 years, 12 months ago

But those will probably be in a week you want to bench boost? Or in 29 when you prolly want to use use your wildcard. If i had the choice noe, Sakas double in 25 looks the most appealing one.

Re chip strategy, I haven't seen this option mentioned enough. If Brighton DGW/DGWs pre-29 get confirmed, is it viable to WC earlier for Brighton DGWs, load up your team with DGW29 players also and FH BGW28?

I was thinking about this scenario too.

Decided it's just too early to speak about the best strategy - we should wait till FA Cup QFs are played and we get more info about Brighton doubles.

All this should be known before GW26 I think.

    5. The Mentaculus
      • 4 Years

I think so. I believe we'll have a good picture of BGW28 and possibly DGW29 by deadline for GW26. Brighton's chance of doubling in 29 is set at 100% by Mikkel Tokvam's chart.

Think so. 40% for GW26, 30% for GW27 according to this:

Outrageously still have Cancelo and selling downwards allows Martinelli to Saka (which I'm set on, and creates £ for Bruno to Salah later).

    Kepa
    White Trippier Shaw
    Bruno Rashford Martinelli Odegaard
    Mitro Haaland Kane
    (Ward: Andreas, Bueno; Cancelo*)

    A. Get Lewis. Play him this week and play one of him or Bueno gw25. According to predictions he has roughly a 2/3 chance of playing both. In gw25, I'll sell Shaw to Tark or a Liverpool Def depending on circumstances. In 25 this gives me Bueno vs Lewis for a starting 11th man.

    B. Get Tarkowski. Play Shaw Vs Leeds. Means 1 city only. In gw25, he'll play and Shaw will either stay or go for Pool defender depending on circumstances.

I see many are switching Martinelli to either Saka or Odegaard, I´m considering it as well and would be for a hit.
However, considering there next match in the double is against City, both Saka & Odegaard could easily have there minutes managed as well if Arsenal are winning.
Think I´ll stick at the moment and save the -4 and possibly bring in Saka for DGW 25

Looking at ur team. U bring in ake is sensible but who will u bench. U thinking of bringing saka in for martinelli which will cost u points. Might be better off just doing one trf

Hi, any hits needed here? 1.9 ITB and am short of getting Mahrez (Pep roulette an issue in any case)

    Kepa
    Gabriel - Trippier - Shaw
    Bruno - KDB - Saka - Rash - Almiron
    Haaland - Nketiah

    Ward - Schar - Greenwood - Patterson

I think your team looks good and a hit is unnecessary. I would start Schar over Almiron and maybe reassess next week.

Was set on Salah > KDB but now feels like that's baking in a transfer. Now thinking Fernandes > Mahrez.

My question is would you also do a -4 for Martinelli > Saka?

    Current team:
    Kepa
    Tripper / Lewis / Martinez
    Rashford / Fernandes / Salah / Martinelli
    Kane / Nketiah / Haaland

    Ward / Andreas / Botman / Bueno

No replies earlier up, would you look to take a -4 or even a -8 here at all to try setup nicer for the doubles/blanks? I'm very tempted to hit the BB chip this week too as basically everyone I'd happily play.

    Kepa
    Trippier - Akanji - White
    Rashford - Bruno - Martinelli - Saka
    Kane - Haaland - Toney

    Ward - Botman - Shaw - Andreas

    Hi all 🙂

    Kepa
    Gabriel / Shaw / Trippier
    Fernandes / Mitoma / Rashford / Martinelli
Kane / Haaland / Darwin (planned to use FT to Nketiah)
    (Ward / Almiron / Bueno / Doherty)

1FT and 2.6itb, all chips intact.

If no injuries for Man U tonight, i'm thinking the obvious is Darwin > Nketiah?
Considering TC Haaland too, surely they'll go out all guns blazing against Arsenal especially?
I know Doherty needs attention, just feel like I have more pressing moves to make with the 3 playing defenders pretty nailed.
Thoughts are appreciated 🙂 I know i'm crazy for still having Darwin but kept him as wanted at least one differential and thought surely they'll kick into gear soon! How wrong was I! Only shipped Salah > Bruno last week too :-/
    Thanks in advance.

Think I’m shipping Wilson for Eddie this week and holding Martinelli. Could -4 like yourself but will it pay off? Probably not this week

Yeah, I'm never a fan of a -4, especially to swap one player for another in the same team. I did think about it as I really wish I had saka but I don't like it. Surely it's Martinelli's turn to grab some points... Hoping they might change stuff up a bit after the Everton result.

Making the same move Darwin to Nketiah, kept him until now for the same reasons. It will be fun to watch him bag a brace against Everton...

Suppose it depends which GWs you'd want him for - but I guess it'll end up being someone in rotation with Tark/Kilman rather than a more exciting Perisic-type.

Otherwise I think it would have be KDB - but perhaps you could just sell him in 25 to make this work (booking transfers, I know). Or just stick Evan Ferguson in there for all the Brighton DGWs to come (no GW25 fixture, I know... compromises abound)

Thanks for this. But like I said above, I didnt know about Lloris out, and I wanted the potential cleanies to go with th attacking threat.

Actually makes it easier now. Think I'll go Mings

Was having a look at top scoring Mids. Salah is 15 pts off the top spot (Rashford). All he needs is 1 haul (2 goals 3 bonus). The DGW looks more enticing to me now hah.

I'm just trying to convince myself, really.

Liverpool form could pick up quickly for sure! But I think the problems at that club run far deeper, and that puts me off for now ... doesn't mean Salah won't haul in a DGW though

    2. Ze_Austin

All he needs is some drastic Liverpool improvement, immediately, or the gulf between Pool assets and the template will only widen by the week
