In our latest reaction to the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) relaunch, we run through the 11 players who have changed position for the 2023/24 season.

As well as explaining why they’ve been reclassified, we’ll work out what the key assets would have scored in their ‘new’ positions.

From goal threat to expected stats, you can find official Opta data on the players listed below and much more besides in our Premium Members Area.

FPL POSITION CHANGES: HOW FPL CLASSIFY PLAYERS

As a rough guide, FPL tend to classify players using the following criteria:

DefendersCentre-backs, full-backs, wing-backs (eg in a 3-4-3/3-5-2)
MidfieldersCentral/defensive midfielders, number tens, wingers/wide-midfielders, players on either flank of a front three
ForwardsLone strikers, both strikers who play in a two-man attack, the central striker in a three-man frontline

DIOGO JOTA/CODY GAKPO

Leicester v Liverpool team news: Jota benched, Darwin absent
  • FPL position in 2022/23: Forward (Jota)/Midfielder (Gakpo)
  • FPL position in 2023/24: Midfielder (Jota)/Forward (Gakpo)

Since joining in January, Cody Gakpo (£7.5m) made all but two of his 17 league starts as the Reds’ nominal centre-forward.

He may drift and drop deep, a la Roberto Firmino, but the on-paper starting position tends to be the main consideration for the FPL classifiers.

Diogo Jota (£8.0m), meanwhile, was only the central striker in two of his 12 starts last season, a campaign admittedly littered by injury.

Jurgen Klopp has instead tended to deploy him on the left flank of Liverpool’s front three, the Portugal international job-sharing with Luis Diaz (£7.5m) in the run-in.

It didn’t do Jota any harm: all seven of his Premier League goals came when lining up out wide.

Actual points in 2022/23Points if they’d already changed position
Gakpo9078
Jota8089

Jota would only have lost three of his nine original bonus points as a midfielder, mostly because he scored a brace in each of the three games in question – so even the baseline bonus points (BBPS) deductions couldn’t damage him too much.

Gakpo, by contrast, would only have scraped together one extra bonus point as a forward but lost 13 of his total points by not benefitting from clean sheets and goals.

Where did you get the name Eugene Starlington from? I mean there are a lot of names you could have picked but why that one?

Not a huge leap in imagination given there's a Eugene Starlington who works at FPL Towers in Birmingham.

    This is me for now:

    Pickford
    TAA, Gabriel, Estupinan
    Rashford, Saka, Foden, Enciso
    Haaland, Jesus, Nkunku

    4.0, 4.5, 4.0, 4.5.

    0.5 ITB

    - Not seeing many 3-4-3s out there but I prefer Jesus to Odegaard and Martinelli.
    - Nkunku I also really like with Chelsea's fixtures and he can easily be changed to Gakpo.
    - Foden + Enciso vs Mbeumo + Mitoma is my main dilemma so far. The latter is definitely safer and more template, the former riskier and more exciting. Might as well live a little right?
    - 0.5m left back so that I can afford James or Chilwell if Chelsea hit the ground running.

Looks good for a 4.3.3 which isn’t so popular.

I’m not sold on Jesus. Too inconsistent.

He's not clinical but 18 G/A in 24 starts last season doesn't seem inconsistent to me.

For those thinking of going without Salah. Imagine Salah bangs a hat-trick in GW1 and he’s rising in price, everyone and his dog is capping him for Bournemouth at home in GW 2 and you can’t get him in for free.

    1. Davido989
      • 15 Years
      2 years, 5 months ago

Drafts without Salah look nice on paper but as below, you can still get your selection of 7.5-8.5m mids with Salah. The sacrifice is the 7.5-8m mid which to be honest I don't mind making if it means having Salah.

I get what you’re saying and I have done a draft with Salah in specifically for Bournemouth captaincy GW2. But then if you have haaland salah then that means maybe you miss out on Saka vs forest and Rashford vs wolves

      1. Davido989
        • 15 Years

See my team below. It's possible to have Saka and Bruno/Rash too. The sacrifice is the striker being budget. Which I think is OK.

Is Botman really such a huge bargain?

Ok he is cheap, however many of the next category up are also a lot cheaper than in previous seasons, and many of them have much greater attacking threat, Eustapian, Chilwell, James, Shaw, the Tottenham fella etc. With such a generous budget this season are we really going to play defenders with this little threat, just for their clean sheet potential? Plus Newcastle have many more matches to play this season.

And those first four Newcastle fixtures are tough.
I think people are just framing the Botman price in relation to Trippier and the promoted sides. But Botman is not that good of a player compared to the other options even in his own team Schar/Trippier etc

There is none atm... Unless you just need fodder. I usually like to atleast have some players that play on my bench. Andreas was perfect for that last season. This season I'm probably going with Brownhill at 5.0m. He should be fairly attacking and also take some setpieces.

As in to play or sit on the bench just waiting to chip in with 2 points when you need them? I'm not sure there is one at this stage but preseason will hopefully reveal something.

    Haaland, Kane

    Your thoughts please.

Is De Gea going? Will Henderson play? Is Porto worth a risk?
    Will Enzo fire under Poch?

    Maddison + Jesus
    Martinelli + Nkunku

How’s this lovely 3-4-3 team, rotate defenders depending on who has the best fixtures

    Kepa
    White Dias Estupinen
    Bruno Saka Martinelli Maddison
    Haaland Nkunku Gakpo

    Porro 1st sub rest fodder

Gakpo rotation risk, would say the same for Ben white as well… would do white + Gakpo—> shaw Jesus and kepa to Pickford.

This post will get lost among all the first drafts but just a quick THANK YOU for a couple of improvements in the My Profile pages of FFS:

    1. People who had previously nominated a playing style can now revert to having 'none' as an option.
    2. The renew subscription button and explanation of subscription status (or lack thereof) have been clarified.

One fault that remains, at least for me on Firefox, is the Alerts and Notifications page fails to get past the vertical grey stripe 'loading' step.

Personally think this season might have the most variation in a while, so many good options and so many different combinations on display.

I know the bench is weak, but how is it looking elsewhere?

    Pickford
    Trent - James - Chilwell - Porro
    Rashford - Son - Maddison - Foden
    Haaland (C) - Nkunku

    (Virginia - Baldock - 4.5m - 4.5m)
