With Fantasy Premier League (FPL) live for 2023/24, we’ll be welcoming back our team of Hall of Famers and guest writers for the new campaign.

We’ll be hearing from a different contributor every day in the aftermath of the FPL relaunch, to get their thoughts on the pricing and to see their initial picks.

Our writers will be providing regular articles and team reveals throughout the new season, with only Premium Members able to access every single one.

You can sign up here for the new campaign – once you’re aboard, you’ve locked in the price of your Premium Membership for good, so long as you don’t cancel!

Next up, five-time top 1k finisher Tom Freeman shares the first draft of his FPL team.

... 2

In this article, I’ll share my very early thoughts on the players and teams that have caught my eye since launch, alongside my first draft.

I guarantee it’ll change, with pre-season/transfers/the Community Shield etc adding crucial information, but it’ll at least allow me to start thinking about the kind of squad I want to create.

GOALKEEPERS

I usually prefer a £4.5m/£4.0m ‘keeper pairing to start the season and having scanned the new prices, see no reason to deviate this year.

Jordan Pickford (£4.5m) kept five clean sheets from Sean Dyche’s appointment onwards in January – the same amount as David Raya (£5.0m) and Aaron Ramsdale (£5.0m) – and also ranked fourth for saves. I expect Everton will benefit defensively from a full pre-season under Dyche and they have some pretty decent fixtures between Gameweeks 1-8.

If I can find a spare £0.5m, I could pair Pickford with Fulham’s Bernd Leno (£4.5m), who plays Luton Town and Crystal Palace in Gameweeks 5/6 respectively.

Other options I will consider are West Ham United’s Lukasz Fabianski (£4.5m) and Alphonse Areola (£4.0m), plus Crystal Palace’s Sam Johnstone (£4.5m).

DEFENDERS

Trent Alexander-Arnold (£8.0m) was a very different proposition after Jurgen Klopp started using him as an ‘inverted full-back’ last season. From that point onwards (Gameweek 30), he racked up seven assists in 10 games, with nine of the 25 ‘big chances’ he created in 2022/23 coming in that period. If he continues in a hybrid role, he could easily reach 15 assists, perhaps more.

Above: Trent Alexander-Arnold’s touch heatmap Gameweeks 30-38 2022/23

Chelsea could be a great source of value next season and the upside is there for Reece James (£5.5m) and Ben Chilwell (£5.5m) playing under Mauricio Pochettino. Admittedly, there are a lot of unknowns, but I genuinely see points at both ends of the pitch for these players, especially with their fixtures from Gameweek 3 onwards. There is no Europe either, hopefully reducing the chance of fatigue/injuries.

Elsewhere, we probably don’t need to be taking unnecessary punts on promoted defenders like Anel Ahmedhodzic (£4.5m) – who I’d singled out as ‘one to watch’ pre-launch – when Sven Botman (£4.5m) is available at the same price, which is a bit annoying.

My five picks in my draft are therefore Alexander-Arnold, James, Nathan Ake (£5.0m), Botman and George Baldock (£4.0m). Other players on the ‘maybe’ pile are Luke Shaw (£5.5m), Pervis Estupinan (£5.0m), Gabriel Magalhaes (£5.0m), Matty Cash (£4.5m) and Rico Henry (£4.5m).

Personally think there’s too much value in MF to be going with 3 up top. I’d take Odegaard over Jesus in this line up, for example

Can someone please explain to me why if Mbappe leaves for free next year PSG will be forced to sell some of their other players??

“ The financial hit to PSG if Mbappe tries to leave for nothing next summer will be so large that they will have to sell key players.”

Expect it comes down to commercial revenue loss from having arguably the worlds best player leave your club.

Sponsorship deals etc can be huge and a star player can significantly impact the value of those agreements.

I think I read that Barcelona had two different commercial options to negotiate on - one with the use of the club image without Messi, and one where Messi was included. Messi one obviously several metric f tonnes more cash.

Could it just be that without a big fee for MBappe coming in they won't have the income to cover other players wages?

I read somewhere that they have to pay huge huge sum to Mbappe if he leaves next season.

FFP rules and accounting trickery. If you buy a player for 200mil you can spread that cost over lots of years like Chelsea and also have his perceived value "on the books". If you get lower than his perceived value then not only do you lose the ability to spread that cost you also have to crystalise the loss.

Lots of promising 4.0 defenders this season, and the Botman pricing shocker means this season’s price hero will be a 4.5m MILF or FWD.

Who are your picks for best budget bench boys?

So heres what ive been grappling with. Will Trent score more as a "midfielder"?

I'm not so sure. Yes, he was much, much better in the second half of last season when he moved into the midfield more.

But in previous years as a full back he has scored 208, 160, 210 and 185. Its not like he stayed back!

I reckon Trent as a full back will score as much as Trent as a part time defensive midfielder.

I still have him in my draft though for some reason!

    🙂

I think you’ve answered the question already.

More or less, really doesn’t matter. He’s going to score somewhere around 200 points for 8m so if that sounds good to you, you’ll take it.

    2. TheBiffas

He's not a part-time defensive midfielder. He will play as an inverted fullback

problem is if Liverpool revert back to traditional full back roles (with 2 midfielder signings) and then TAA seems overpriced relative to the rest this year

Havertz could be a sneaky pick this year.

Artets is no mug these days.

Him playing as a 10 (middle of the three midfielders behind the forward) could really work.

So is Odegaard in the pivot or on the bench? Either way, it’s shocking team management.

Havertz replaces Xhaka so will line up on left 8 behind front 3 with Ode on right 8 & Rice holding instead of Partey.

        Nothing shocking at all here

Ignoring the fact that paying £65m for a player with less than 20 goals in 3 seasons as a 9 is a terrible plan, I was specifically replying to the lad who said to play him as a 10.

Rice has never played lone 6 either, it’s going to end in tears.

Surely he’s been signed for rotation across the three? I thought it would be Odegaard-Rice-Partey, but then you still haven’t solved the issue of a Partey alternative…

He's been fabulous for Coventry over the last 2 seasons . Strong , quick and able to play as a lone forward. Sporting have been after him for ages but wanted him on the cheap . Owner dug gis heels in and it looks as though we've got food money for him. He would have been great for Everton but as usual agents hold sway and his agent has always wanted him to get European Football Mark Robins is a master at developing players and hopefully Simms kicks on Good luck with your boys this season

Not seen many 3-4-3s, so I'll share mine:

    Pickford
    James - Chilwell - Porro

    Rashford - Foden - Grealish - Maddison Kane (C) - Nkunku
 - Gakpo
    (Virginia - Trent - Beyer - Plange)

It's peculiar to have Trent on the bench, but don't think Trent will do much vs Chelsea.

Surprised to see not so many drafts with Eze. Could possibly outscore more popular and similarly priced alternatives like Mbeumo and Mitoma.

Palace have an okayish first 8 games, he's on penalties, and will most likely be their talisman if Zaha leaves.

If European football rotation hits hard, I can see myself going for someone like him or MGW from gw 4/5.

If anyone wants to know why the template is so strong. Read the fpl article about experts first draft. All of them say don’t own Salah and go big in the midfield - as if there’s no option to try something else

    1. InsertPunHere

I mean second premium or not is at least some kind of differentiator.

Point is all the “experts” are saying single premium. A lot of players will follow that advice out of fear (or logic as I can see the argument) and then complain the template is too strong

Haaland + Kane owner here. I get what you mean, but the template tends to disintegrate around GW10 anyway. It would be quite funny if KDB absolutely popped off and all the 5 midfielders 7.5-9.0 midfielders immediately have to take hits.

Yeah I agree. I more pointing out to those that claim it’s the fault of the prices that there’s a template. I don’t see a template as a problem I just get bored that every day people complain about prices.

I mean there’s about ten solid midfield options in the 7.5-8.5 bracket, whereas last year it was more the sub-7s getting points in midfield. All of those have risen in price this year, which means if you want three or four of them you’re going to have to make a sacrifice somewhere else, and the easiest place is the second premium.

Thanks, just setting any random team up at the moment, I'm hoping to amend before the start of the season and not get screwed by price changes.

        1. Yes, as long as you set your team by GW1 deadline it doesn't matter

Maybe stating the obvious but factoring in anything more than 4 gws in initial selection, eg 8 gws is not the best approach

After 2 gws, with a saved transfer 30% of team can be changed for -4, not factoring in wc

That was once Schmeichel left, but I’m sure there was another 4.5s rotation doing the rounds at one point.

Haha, yeah I was on the Ward/Iversen gig. Worked ok really. Went Pope before WC I think which was nice but missed the Kepa run big time. Think I’ll start with Ramsdale and Flekken, until I don’t 🙂

Remember there was doubt as to who Brentford would start the season with in goal after they signed Strakosha from Lazio Though once that was settled, Sanchez and Raya did end up becoming the two 4.5 keepers of choice

FPL Towers effectively suggested it by releasing the pair's pricing together first. A few pundits thought 'that could work' and the rotation gimmick was reborn.

    (H)aaland, Nkunku, Ferguson

Looks good, only pick is be worried about is Nkunku but I guess one to watch in preseason.

Is 3 strikers not a thing? This was my first “cba thinking about it for a month” attempt:

        Ramsdale
        Trent - Shaw - Estupinan
        Saka - Rashford - Mbeumo - Enciso
        Haaland - Gakpo - Jesus

The template is shouting at you right now for not including Maddison, Fernandes, Grealish, all the other 7.5-8.5 mids.

Anybody else annoyed at the striker options?

I mean everyone has Haaland. I would like Kane but uncertainty if he will be at Spurs and two premiums means no TAA.

Then there's a massive 4.5m gap to everyone else.

Are the likes of Nkunko and Gakpo really going to be worth it?

Why have Jesus, Watkins or Isak when you are more confident the similar priced mids will score more points?

At least we still have Mitrovic who I'll probably start with again before he headbutts a physio.

It's like no strikers bar Haaland and Kane put up good numbers.

We have loads of midfield options, quite a few defender options yet when it comes to strikers its like Haaland and.... err dunno.

Wilson has poor opening fixtures so maybe not one to start.
Jesus could block bringing in a more productive Arsenal mid for similar money
Toney banned so forget having a run of starts

I don't really agree. There's only a handful of midfield options I would take over Jesus and Nkunku. Gakpo could also be excellent and I wouldn't be surprised if Ferguson and Wissa match Mitoma and Mbeumo for less money. Watkins, Wilson and Mitrovic are proven FPL assets and will be factors when their fixtures turn.

Best option for 2nd Ars forward / 5m first bench option please:

A: Jesus & Kluivert (could go either way, that) / Reed (to be safe) in a 343
    B: Martinelli & Moore in a 352

Saka is already in and non-neg.

Flekken (Strakosha) - assuming Raya gets his move at some point
    Shaw Chilwell Gabriel (Mitchell Beyer)
