Atalanta want 80m+ for an unproven striker yet United won’t bid for Kane who’s guaranteed 20-30 goals a season?

Article is a bit useless. Nothing about his bonus potential which is primarily the reason to go for him over a 4.5.

True, I'm planning on Rashford plus was thinking Shaw, but now not sure he's worth it. Maybe I'll look at Onana. I'd rather double up on Arsenal mids than get Fernandes as well.

I think having a free Man Utd spot could be useful, if they turn out to be more attacking this season and end up signing a decent striker before the transfer deadline.

As Inter Milano fan, i watched him closley all season. He is without doubt one of best GKs in the world. Amazing reflexes, jumping, kicking, playing better in the field then DDG and his only problem may be his discipline. Utd got realy good goalkeeper.

I actually assumed people must be buying him for assist potential, as I figured people would otherwise prefer the extra money and United spot, so I was confused to find the article didn't mention this. It's still unclear to me why he's so popular, but if it's bonus points potential, I would like to know more, and why everyone knows about it except for me!

Didn't United keep the most clean sheets last season - and with an inferior keeper? Add in the baps and it looks decent value.

Clean sheets are only worth, what, 5 points on average? Will he get enough to outscore other GKs who are getting raking in the saves and also getting CS points? And then more to justify the 0.5 extra (and not spending it in a more lucrative position) and using a Utd spot?

Doesn't have to be for the whole season. A 4.5 may well prove better value - but which one? Why not start with a safe bet with good opening fixtures until you decide on who to commit to.

I think it's a waste of a transfer (and the money spent from the budget each week in the meantime). I don't think you'll ever have enough information to make a safe bet when choosing a new GK for such an unpredictable thing as CSs. When everyone sold the Leicester GK(s) last season, they started outscoring some of the main GKs that people were choosing, for example.

I don't see why Onana is a safe bet when others aren't. The point about where GKs get their points from (e.g. CSs vs save points) is true for every game, not just the whole season.

No need to transfer Onana out before WC imo. He is .5 cheaper than Shaw. So even though I don't like word "coverage", it can used in this case. They both will get most of their points from clean sheets (and appearances). Onana may also "steal" Shaw's passing baps.

He is 0.5 more than other GKs, though, whose points he might not even be able to "cover".

Shaw is entirely irrelevant. Not sure why you would make an exception regarding "coverage" just for Onana. I guess you have him in your team:)

You either want Onana in your team or you don't. Personally, I'd prefer him as an Utd gk than Pickford & relying on Everton, the unknowns regarding Brighton & Brentford. I'm surprised Onana was priced at 5.0 & am certainly not going to look this gift horse in the mouth.

They were a very defensive team, from what I saw of them last season (which admittedly wasn't week in, week out). Surely there will be more pressure on ETH to play more attacking football this season and this might impact their clean sheets.

            • 10 Years

Agreed. And also, historically, 17 CSs is a lot, even for top 6 sides. It's golden glove territory (around 16-20), and since you wouldn't expect the same team to dominate the golden glove year-on-year, I'd say the safer bet would be a reduction of CSs just as a function of variance around the mean. Or some other gobbledigook

Lol, I'm a bit old fashioned and still find the golden glove a strange award. Although it doesn't equate to FPL points, I usually think the best keeper/defence is the one that's conceded the fewest goals!

For an individual keeper award, I'd even be more likely to give it to the keeper who made the most saves.

There was a good graphic last season that one of the content creators shared about where keepers made their points. Will see if I can find it. IIRC it suggested that save points were the bread and butter for keeper points. A keeper who made lots of saves was also likely to get the bonus points when they did get a clean sheet. Hence budget keepers outscoring Ederson.

Yeah I tend to agree with all that, though maybe I'd go a step further and say that there should be no GK award at all and they should just be grateful that they get to be there without having to be very good at the sport. 😀

When Shaw played CB he scored quite highly on bonus for pass completion, as the central figure in playing out from the back. But maybe most of these passes now flow through Onana? Just a hunch though really - for the most part, I still find the bonus system too complex to be able to predict who the bonus magnets will be without any data

Yeah, the idea is that United will pass out from the back with Onana at the heart of it. People focus on his long passes, but you'd expect that to be supplemented by a lot of passes to the defence and back again, looking for an opening. He should rack up passing baps.

Yes, therefore Onana over Shaw for me. Everyone has Rashford and having both defensive options blocks Bruno or Mount.

Not sure Shaw is worth 5.5, so that may swing me to go for Onana, but then not sure he's worth it over the 4.5 keepers. Decisions, decisions!

Since the off, I've been on a 9m rotation of Steele/Verb and Flekken. I think Onana/Areola for same money is safer. I'm not confident to play any 4.5 keeper every week until I see some form.

Think that's fair. I'm currently on Steele and a 4.0 as placeholders. I don't like Pickford. Leno or Flekken are options, but as you say none necessarily feel like a set and forget. Onana may be the answer and means I could go Estupinan over Shaw.

I think the test will be how many goals and assists defenders will score for Utd when they have a clean sheet too ... can't see the keeper getting baps when defenders get their bps for attacking returns.

If people think Shaw will score lots of goals and assists then by extension they should expect Onana to get baps ... in which case he probably isn't worth the money

    Avoid the outrage. A repost
I am aware of 1 Citeh and no Haaland but in my colors:
Onana: A passing goalkeeper in what has been a good defense.
Areola: At 4.0 gives me a possible playing keeper but waiting on news.
TAA: cannot be ignored as he is capable of midfield points with clean sheets. Get through Chelsea and captain GW2/Salah
Estupinan: Good 3 fixtures; plays forward and everyone else has him. More a shield than a personal pick.
Gabriel: Easy fixture with an attacking threat at 5 mil. Jury out atm with Timber joining.
Mbeumo: Penalties, form and no Toney. Wissa may still appeal.
Bruno: All he needs is someone getting on the end of his creative skills. Hopefully more pens this year.
Martinelli: Nobody can convince me of him being worse than Saka. Minutes risk maybe but my "differential"
Foden: Break out year for him and other Citeh players leaving. First on my team sheet.
Salah: The big risk. I am gambling on last years form vs Haaland with injury and away performances from Haaland swaying me.
Nkunku: dependent on pre season he is my fun pick with great fixtures after Pool. No Europe and maybe being ahead of the curve.
Jesus: As good as any Arsenal player IMO and a move in GW3 if Salah does not perform
Henry, Baldock and Fergie as bench cover with the thought of Brighton banging it. A little more thought maybe.

Shame there is no dislike button because I am sure it will grab negative attention. My season could be over quickly.

I suppose I want a bit of excitement being fully aware it could ruin the season early on. Just some points:
Saka was poor the last par of the season, as was Haaland and Rashford considering earlier form. Is that enough to stray and et Salah Martinelli and Bruno; probably not. It will be an incredible high though. I am against gambling but only related to money.

Even, if it doesn't go so well at the start of the season (not saying it will), there is some fun in climbing the ranks during the second half of the season. I was 1.9million going into the world cup last season as I persisted with KDB over Haaland for too long. I finished top 100k and really enjoyed the second half of the season.

If these are the players you fancy doing well with, then stick with them and just go for it.

Timber is playing on the right side of the pitch and has more to do with White and Saliba. Gabriel's main competitor is Kiwior.

I know but it makes little sense getting him IMO when their right back can play centre half too. So I expect something different from Arteta

          Actually works (ish)
          4.5-4
          4.5-4.5-4.5-4.5-4
          Monster Midfield
          Haaland-4.5-4.5

Leaves you with a 4.5-only backline and no other strikers, but just about feasible.

Not feasible at all. There are these things called injuries, and the results from a less than 5.0 keeper are gonna be mediocre. But its feasible until the night before.

Ah yes, we’re going to ignore the fact that a 4.5 was the best keeper last year. The obvious flaw is if Haaland gets injured, but he won’t get rotated too much early on and seems fairly durable. Why am I defending this draft lol.

well defended. I would counter by saying that's the first time in 10 seasons, but then you would say there's always a 4.5 in the top three, the trick is figuring out who. Personally I would go Flekken. Cheers

    Verbruggen-Areola
    Trent-Chilwell-Estupiñan-Henry-Baldock
    Rashford-Saka-Foden-Mitoma-Mbuemo
    Haaland-Jesus-Archer

My midfield has reverted to possibly the most template form possible, which I’m not massively happy about, and I’m also unsure about the best 4.5-4 defensive combo to cover until Chilwell’s fixture swing. Thoughts?

More seriously, Zinchenko is not the 5 mil Arsenal pick I’d go for, Aké obviously has rotation risk. I’ve gone for a similar start Chilwell on the bench tactic. Forward line is as template as they come, up to you whether you think that’s a good or bad idea.

Luton can’t confirm that their ground will be Premier League standard by then (hospitality, broadcasting facilities etc), so rather than leave it late they’ve postponed it early so we can all get on with our lives.

This is gonna be the most set and forget season ever. I'm thinking of using my transfers mostly on transferring Eze and MGW in and out for that 7th attacker since I have no plan to remove the top team players and their fixtures rotate so well.

That’s what they always say… one Haaland/Saka injury, Liverpool start off on a flyer but Salah blanks, Chelsea click, Spurs tighten up defensively, Arsenal stutter, Mount suddenly becomes a locked pick… a lot of things can change.

      1. Zimo
        • 8 Years

Haaland to Alvarez/Kane easy. Saka to Martinelli easy. Already have Nkunku from Chelsea. The Defenders are where I'm using my transfers anyways if not the Eze/MGW so the spurs thing also easy. Arsenal won't stutter enough to remove them for anyone else. Mount won't be a locked pick and if he is then Bruno isn't and easy switch then.

I don't see myself removing any of Haaland Saka Salah Bruno Nkunku Mbuemo till January. Defence and that 7th attacker will be the ones I'll use transfers on then. And that's easy too because the fixtures have made it so that almost every good team has chunks where they have good fixtures and bad fixtures. Switch between having likes of Moreno, Estupinan, Gabriel, Schar, Chilwell, Henry etc.

        1. Zimo
          • 8 Years

Nkunku the only possible one if Chelsea dont do well but the alternatives aren't great either except for Jesus and he should be on pens and freekicks and get most of the bonus since Chelsea don't have a bonus hogging mid like Bruno, Odegaard, KDB.

I've currently got Chilwell as fourth defender (for GW1 at least) and Enciso as fifth mid. Was more playing around and price points, but might look at Brighton/Chelsea fixtures for possible rotation. Might be a non-starter depending on Brighton lineups.

I think Alvarez is a decent shout. Even when he doesn’t start, I think he will get time, and he doesn’t need a lot of time to get points in that team. My only concern is that there may be times when neither Foden or Alvarez turn up and your bench is very weak.

Right, I'm sat here waiting for this draft to be ripped apart:

    Ederson
    Trent - James - Porro
    Son - Rashford - Saka (C) - Billing
    Kane - Jesus - Ndiaye
    (Virginia - Chilwell - Gusto - Nakamba)

    - I've NOT chosen Haaland because I think Saka is a better captaincy option for GW1-2, Kane GW3-5. I can wait & take the gamble.
    - Billing and 3 Spurs players are in the draft because they'll be in attack-focussed teams this season (if they all stay).
    - No Foden due to rotation risk.
    - Ndiaye is a bargain at 5.5m.
    - Chosen Ederson because I don't trust Brighton's defence & Europe rotation yet, Everton are a wait and see.
    - Gusto can replace James if injured.

    What do you think?
