    Thoughts, please:

    Onana (Areola)
    TAA, Gabriel, Estupiñán, Pinnock (Baldock)
    Salah, Rashford, Martinelli, Eze, Enciso
    Haaland (4.5, 4.5)

For me the issue of no starting 4.5 forwards is a pretty glaring problem. Other than that it's good, but not so good that it justifies the imbalance and lack of back-up if Haaland misses games.

        Very reasonable. I appreciate it!

If I may: do you like the following better?

        Onana (Areola)
        TAA, Gabriel, Botman, Pinnock (Baldock)
        Salah, Rashford, Martinelli, Eze (Nakamba)
        Haaland, Wissa (4.5)

It's Botman instead of Pervis, then a 4.5 mid instead of Enciso and Wissa up front.

Ederson is a terrible pick though - no baps or save points, and doesn't keep as many CS as you'd want for that price.

Not worth having any of them until something resembling a settled line-up appears, if ever.

I don't think we will see the defence rotated at the start of the season so prefer to go with Stones for some attacking potential.

Not sure on the Ode pick. He could be less attacking if Havertz plays as the other 8

Fair - Ode could be Martinelli or even move to a 3-4-3 with Jesus.

Anyone want to guess the most nailed Villa 11?

    My effort:

    Martinez
    Konsa Carlos Torres Moreno
    Luiz Tielemens
    Diaby McGinn Ramsey
    Watkins

    1. Pumpkinhead

If McGinn is in there I think it's more likely a 4-3-3 with Luiz, Tielemens, and McGinn behind the front three.

Just as you have it, would be my best guess at the moment. Which has got me wondering, if they do go with this lopsided defence from the off, could troll extraordinaire Lucas Digne be a good option til Moreno is back?

      1. Lovren an elevator
        • 10 Years

I think the fact everyone is convinced Moreno is ahead of Digne, probably negates Digne. As Moreno is due back imminently

Yes apologies. I've just seen the update. Thought he was back in Aug!
In that case, agreed! Unless Cash is nailed until then, and emery doesn't lop-side the defence?

Kamara might get ahead of Tielemens. Could be opposition specific.

I think Luiz and McGinn are nailed in midfield. With Ramsay out, Buendia probably starts.

I think the Back 4 will be

            Cash - Torres - Mings - Moreno

But like I say, I think Torres will struggle. Might be back to Konsa Mings by the end of the season.

      Emi
      Cash, Konsa, Torres, Moreno
      Luiz, Kamara Mcginn
      Diaby Watkins Ramsey

      With no transfers I'm pretty sure this is it, with following to consider;

      - Konsa place until Carlos proves some consistency - missed a lot of - football and was new to prem even then
      - Buendia and Tielemans will rotate a lot with Ramsey and McGinn
      - Expect us to sign a RB and another option across the front 3

    Pickford 4M
    Chilwell Estupinan Gabriel Pinnock 4M
    Salah Bruno Saka Eze McNeill
    Haaland Nkunku 4.5M

Tried various permutations with Salah and this is the one I like most. Obviously McNeill is in a pretty terrible team but Dyche likes him and he will likely get a lot more playing time than Enciso. Nkunku the punt.

I think there are a lot of good 6.5 options to go with this season. I think I'll end up having at least one 6.5 mid for most of the season.

There are some good ones to start the season with such as Mbeumo, Mitoma, Gross and others who will have good fixtures runs later on in the season like Diaby, Mudryk, Almiron, Eze etc. Think it's a good price point to have in the team and it's not too difficult to move up to 7.0 to get the likes of Richarlison or Sterling if they look like good options later.

That said, if you're starting off with all your mids from 7.5 upwards then it will be easy to downgrade to the 6.5 of choice to free up funds

    7. The Mentaculus
      • 4 Years
      2 years, 8 months ago

Quite like that bracket actually. Starting with Mitoma. Pretty set on Salah so I think that entails balancing the budget with at least one 6.5m (or cheaper) mid. Current structure:
      12.5 / 9 / 8.5 / 8 / 6.5

    Leno - Areola
    Robbo - Stones - Shaw - Baldock - Bell
Salah - Bruno - Saka - Elanga (for now) - Ahamada
Haaland - Nkunku - Joao Pedro

I know Robbo is an unknown quantity at this point, but he enables me to be able to afford Nkunku (or Darwin) over Wissa.

Trim down the cost of your defence to improve midfield as there are some good value 4.5 def about.

      1. Drop Dead Tsimikas
        • 14 Years

Yeah, I'm thinking Robbo to Gabriel (I know I'm going to cry and reach for a WC if TAA kicks on anyways), JP to Wissa and then either try to find a good 6.0 MF (don't want MGW because of fixtures) or find another 0.5 somewhere for Mitoma. Would love it if Enciso was nailed.

This is the first time I'm not even bothering with TAA just think better value in lower price defs and mids this season .Then again it could change half way through but who knows the WC is there for reason so don't worry .

Yeah, I saw that - his name was the one my eye gravitated to when looking at budget mids. His opening fixtures aren't great, though, and I'd have to start him.

Yeah under 6.5m mids are problematic, unless you're looking for fodder. I'd probably downgrade Robbo as suggested here.

I think it shows why having Salah and Haaland in team is difficult to make work particularly in this formation. You are relying on one of Pedro or Elanga each week. Given the powerful options in midfield having only 3 will be a problem

Or Ahamada/Baldock, yeah. The former might end up being a gem, though, now that Zaha is gone.

Ditch Robbo to beef up the midfield. Pool are still using an inverted RB so 6.5m for the LCB looks a waste of funds to me

I might have sorted it and it gave me 11 starters, assuming Jackson ends up top in Poch's system.

      Leno
      Gabriel - Shaw - Stones
      Salah - Saka - Bruno - Mitoma
      Haaland - Jackson - Wissa

      Areola, Ahamada, Baldock, Bell

Double (Saka & Martinelli). Definitely would like more than one attacker for NFO, but Palace away are no pushovers, Fulham gave them a good contest at Emirates last season (not so much at CC but then Palhinha was suspended), and I don't want to be overinvested for the Man Utd game. So if I go with WC5 I might actually just have Saka for GWs2-4

Loathe to go triple attack or triple defence for any team unless it's a one week punt on a free hit. Feels like putting too many eggs in one basket.

Gabriel is more difficult to replace than Jesus, so it comes to:

      A) Jesus + other 5.0
      B) other fwd + Gabriel

I believe B wins it long term.

As a Bundesliga observer, Diaby clearly has a lot of potential and many Leverkusen fans were surprised to see him land with a top 6 club.

But for all his explosiveness, Diaby is still inconsistent and is also suited primarily to counter-attacking football. This is more the profile of a team such as Aston Villa than of a Champions League team which are likely to be given most of the possession in league games.

He's also not the greatest team-player, in two senses of the word. Firstly, there's a tendency to lose the ball by running at players, when a pass would have been the better option. Secondly, Diaby has gained the reputation for complaining about this team-mates, which isn't good for any dressing room.

I'd still be cautiously optimistic about his prospects at being a success with Villa, as Diaby has improved each season. He certainly has a higher ceiling than Leon Bailey, who also moved from Leverkusen to Villa, which led some Bayer 04 fans to mischievously label Diaby 'Leon Bailey 2.0' on his departure.

Just think Liverpool will score plenty, whilst Arsenal are clearly trying a newer system with Havertz and I don’t think it will gel as nicely.

There is a temptation to go with Saka/Martinelli over Rashford in this team, but I do think Rashford will start well given the opening 4.

Assuming you'd want Jota for Diaz? I'd prefer Diaz over Jota personally.

Otherwise ditch one of the Brighton mids for a 4.5, go with a 442 formation, and use the funds to upgrade Diaz to Jota and turn one of your 4.0 defenders into a 5 or 5.5 defender.

      1. Athletic Nasherbo

Yes so the 0.5m would allow me at any point to get to Jota.

Diaz is my preferred option, but for example Gameweek 5 he travels back from Colombia and he will be benched. Having the cash to get straight to Jota could be really handy!

    Onama
    Stones Estop Gabriel

Check mine below. We have same defenders. So it comes to:

      2) Martinelli + Wissa vs Jesus + Mbeumo

        • Fantasy Football Scout Member

Salah / 6.5 vs Bruno / Rashford is certainly the key decision. I can't find a way to spend the extra 1.5 that I love.
        - Can't get to TAA easily,
        - Hate starting with 1.5m in the bank (particularly with Salah's week 2 match).
        - 6.5 to Foden is a maaaayyyybe

I am also waiting to see if Wissa makes it, MUCH rather start with Mbeumo. Frankly, I would get the 8.0 striker on your team, which means you are selling Marti (and frankly, I honestly think Eze is the best 8.0 MF)

Trouble with having 3 midfielders at 6.5 is that if say Foden, Maddison or another mid in the 7-9 m range starts firing more difficult to get there (unless you take out Salah) so structure a bit inflexible to respond to early bandwagons. Also if any of the 3 start poorly harder to jump off as not much at that price.

    Thoughts about this draft?

    Onana, Areola
Stones, Gabriel, Estu / Cash, Pinnock
    Saka, Martinelli, Rash, Bruno, Mitoma
    Haaland, Wissa / Semenyo

    1.5 itb

Idea is to have pretty set and forget defenders. No Liverpool is naturally an issue. Having money itb gives a lot of flexibility for gw3, so is it a bad thing?

It's difficult for me also, but having route to Liv attacker for gw2 is in my mind. And it does give a lot flexibility. I remember seasons when people chose too expensive players just because they had the money to do so. Having extra money itb for a week or two isn't the end of the world.

I’m not the one to tell people what to do, BUT on this occasion…

Start again, can’t be having a 4.0 defender and Kluivert starting.

You’ll be competing against teams that will have 11 really good players.

      Son > Maddison

      Bruno > Rashford

      Kluivert > McNeil/other 5.5 you like

I wouldn't be too worried about Haaland rests leaving you down to 10, at least to start with. The bigger issue for me would be the extra FT required to switch formation if you think there's a reasonable chance you want Nkunku/Watkins/Isak/Jesus/Gakpo etc (more of an issue if you aim to hold your 1st WC fairly late), since you obviously wouldn't ditch Haaland.

The issue I see is you could end up playing with 10 players if your main FWD doesn't play and 2 fodders also get 0 mins.

For folks that say the team isn't flexible, you can get any player you want in 2-3 moves so not a big issue from that POV.

4-5-1 with two 4.5 fodder forwards lacks flexibility in my opinion. If there's another striker who's on a purple patch and you want to bring him in, then you'd have to reshuffle your team to do so with multiple transfers.

Most teams with a second striker between 7-8m won't have that problem as it will be a straight swap

      1. sirmorbach
        • 9 Years

You're right. Wissa was my other option, but he, woo, would require a bit of a surgery if I really came to want Nkunku/Watkins. Food for thought. Thank you, sir.

"What we’ve learned about Pochettino’s Chelsea so far"

Great article @ Nigel The Crab. As a Chelski, I think you're seeing the same things I see. Hope springs eternal. Nice one.

And for all your Premium Members... the "Premier League clubs’ 2023/24 pre-season friendlies: Fixtures + dates"

NO fixture score since 23 July have been updated. I think there's the LIV one, and then nothing. Eventhough articles have been posted about the matches. Take a look.

Hope you're all getting the bang for your buck from Premium Membership as expected.

    Please:

    A. Onana + Pervis + McNeil
    B. 4.5 keeper + Botman + Mbeumo/Diaby/Mitoma

Tough. I think Onana - 4.5 is a fair tradeoff for upgrading McNeil, who I'm not too enthused by personally. But Estupinan would be a much more reluctant sacrifice

Many thanks, mate! I could certainly do it, but I don't see any of the 6.0 mids worth it. Would have to be a 6.5 sadly. I'll see if there's another route. Thank you so very much!

No Salah but can't tell where your budget went. Need to have Darwin if you're going without Salah.

Don't think he is first choice. More interested in Jota and Gakpo.

If you're thinking Kovacic takes Gundo's place on the cheap, I'd re-think that. He won't get you much as a fourth mid.

Not in the short term with no KDB? He should see a lot of the ball....No Mahrez, Gundo, Bernardo and KDB for the start is a lot of significant touches

Not saying he is anywhere near the goal threat as Gundo...But I can see assists, clean sheet points and Bonus in the first 3

I honestly don't see where his assists come from. Assisting the assister (Foden, Grealish) - sure. Bonus? I sincerely doubt it.

Pep raved about him in his pre-season debut. He made runs behind Alvarez, had multiple touches in the box and he is well-known for playing through balls. Guaranteed 60+ touches on the best attack in the league = easy choice for 5.0. He is a no-brainer for me unless they sign someone else
