Yikes - if I were to have that draft to accommodate Salah, I'd be losing SEVEN of my first-choice picks. Can't justify that.

This fella's made some bizarre choices though like Jesus and Foden. Take a punt on Pedro and you can have something like:

      Onana
      Estupinan - Gabriel - Shaw/Stones/Chilwell
      Salah - Saka - Bruno - Mitoma/Mbuemo
      Haaland - Pedro - Nkunku

Yup. That's the team. Can do Mitoma to Richarlison and the 5.5 to a second Arsenal defender as well if Kane leaves.

I can get Salah in with one or two moves and I think you probably could as well. The real question is if it's worth the downgrades for him (considering if you will captain him as well). Salah will probably have a great season but without captaincy it's a bit trickier to justify the 12.5 for him.

I can make Salah work in mine with limited other changes but that means not having Darwin or TAA. I am fully invested in Darwin for this season which makes taking him out harder, even if it is to accommodate Salah

Starting with Darwin then? Not too worried about Klopp's pressing comments?

I actually really like this Salah- Darwin draft (nice flexibility to move Darwin - Nkunku GW3 if I want triple Chelsea for LUT NFO):
        Johnstone
        Chilwell Estupinan Pau
        Salah Saka Martinelli Mitoma
        Haaland Darwin Jackson

            Engagement test 😉

I'm not sure if Jackson is actually that risky. Seems like Poch wants to play Nkunku as 10/LW, so that leaves Broja & Burstow (or whatever his name is) for competition (for now)...? I actually semi-scrapped this draft after Klopp's pressing comments, but I really like the structure of 2 week punt on LIV fwd then move to Nkunku for 3-4

I too am on Darwin. I'm trying so hard this year to go without an early wildcard so I'm on a draft now that hasn't changed in nearly a week LOL.
Darwin is actually on my bench week 1 with Chilwell. My plan is both will play week 2 (Darwin as possible captain depending on week 1) then Darwin becomes Nkunku or Jackson.
Hopefully just one transfer planned so will go into week 3 still with 2 free (I know it won't happen!!)

"Does Salah (£12.5m) + Bryan Mbeumo (£6.5m) outscore Rashford (£9.0m) + Bruno Fernandes (£8.5m) over a period of 6-8 Gameweeks? Possibly but you’d expect that not to be the case."

This is quite the assumption. Scout's own RMT model has Salah+Mbeumo comfortably outscoring Rashford+Bruno over the first 5 weeks, and the difference is negligible looking at the season projections. If we cap Salah in favourable fixtures, this is even more comfortably outscoring. I expect Review's model to be similar.

Scout isn't even using their own tool to make decisions which is why it's so important to make your own decisions in this game and not just rely on content creators.

Mbeumo/Salah is slightly better over six in RMT, Bruno/Rashford edging it over eight. That's without considering the incrementally better returns you'd get elsewhere by reinvesting that surplus £1.5m. As you say, if you plan to captain Salah (something Zoph isn't doing) then it becomes more weighted towards that initial combo.

Interesting article and I can't disagree with any of it but it is predicated on the belief that Haaland is essential and will be captain every/most weeks. I think the more interesting article would be from someone saying 'Why I don't own Haaland'.

Salah scored 239 points last season despite it being a particularly tough season for Liverpool. Haaland scored 272 points for City. Based on this years pricing of 12.5m and 14m respectively that's a value per million spent of 19.1 vs 19.4. Throw in the fact that personally I'd be confident of Salah starting every game for Liverpool while I wouldn't rule out Pep mixing things up early on. Plus the fact that Haaland is owned by 86% of players vs 25% for Salah, I think this is a much closer discussion than some people realise. Given the ownership, Salah points potentially will push your team up the league whereas Haaland points will likely only maintain your position. Obviously some risk here 😉 but I try to regularly remind myself that no one will win the FPL with the same players as everyone else.

It's worth recalling that it took a wee while for Haaland and the rest of city to gel at the start of last season. That won't be an issue from GW1 this time.

If you'd captain Haaland in GW2 anyway (as Zophar says he would above) then that immediately rules out Salah really.

And if you do own him (as I currently do) it should probably be with the intention in mind of selling him in GW3. Assuming you're able to save your first ft (which you really should be) then it's probably best to see him as a placeholder for whichever mid takes off in the first two weeks and your cash cow for another transfer that same week.

If he does so well that it causes you to doubt selling him, then that's one of them good problems. Otherwise it's all about the very short term.

    My current thoughts on Salah:

    - 2nd best asset in the game as a near differential among more experienced players
    - Only viable attacking route into Liverpool's top 4 attack until we receive some clarity on a starting 11
    - Questions among CHE TOT & MAN U premiums
    - A lot of good 6.5 MIDs
    - IMO, Liverpool will have more to prove early on this year after a very poor start last season

I don't agree that there are a lot of good 6.5m mids. You have Mbeumo and Mitoma. Both play for teams that are quite disrupted and haven't been super convincing in preseason.

March and Gross are options, Bernardo is an option, Sterling & Bowen for 7.0...

What I am saying is it is fairly easy to fit him in with Haaland and still get a balanced squad. The only omission I have is a Man United MID which I can understand why it would be a concern for most.

Liverpool had a very poor start last season yeah but you need to look at recent form. Going by the 2nd half of the season they were are the 2nd best team in the league. I'm going without Salah this year because of Darwin. Salah is still getting into good positions but he's slipping Darwin in a lot more rather than shooting, who is always central now and will end up with the bulk of the goals imo.

Not owning a Liverpool player v Bou could be costly in a GW when Arsenal are away to Palace which is a harder fixture than algorithms are saying and Man city have Newcastle who are gr8 defensively, I reckon man city only score 1 here.

    Why I don't own Salah:

    - Owning him last season(from start) was my biggest mistake and it cost me better overall rank
    - This is not Salah from few seasons ago when most of FPL attacking returns were in his bag, because he only had Firmino and Mane by his side. Firmino's role...false 9, Mane also played for Salah most of the time. Now, there are Diaz, Jota, Darwin, Gakpo + TAA, Mac Alister and Szoboszlai who will all share piece of cake.
    - For a 12.5m, we expect double digits almost every second GW which is impossible. Otherwise, it's a waste of money and spot.
    - Since we have Haaland, who made this game meaningless, there is no room for Mo if we talk about (C)
    - And last, most important reason is - if I own him, then I will own 5-6 players I rly don't want in my squad.

Goalkeeper choice this year is tough. Onana would have been the no brainer to start but I really don’t like United’s opening fixtures. If you’re like me and are willing to spend a little extra on the goalkeeper spots I’ve got a few rotations that might be worth considering:

    Steele + Kepa (9.5m):
LUT, wol, LUT, NFO, bou, BOU, ful, bur

    Johnstone + Martínez (9.5m):
shu, EVE, bur, WOL, CPL, FUL, BHA, NFO

    Onana + Flekken (9.5m)
WOL, ful, NFO, BOU, BHA, EVE, CPL, BHA

To me these could be worth the extra outlay rather than sticking to one of the not too amazing 4.5s we have on offer this year

Each year I end up wasting my Bench Boost chip, so this season, as I'm planning on playing my WC after GW4 anyway, I've decided to BB in either GW1 or GW3; still to be decided. I was already pretty settled on my GW1-4 team and had 3.5 itb, so have just invested that cash in my four bench players. GW3 is looking the better option for the BB, and a few players I'm likely going to change (eg AWB,Neto), but my current squad is:

    Pickford / Neto
    Estupinan / Gabriel / Chilwell / Tarkowski / AWB
    Rashford / Saka / Foden / Mbuemo / Mitoma
    Haaland / Jesus / Wissa
    0.5itb

Going with GW3 BB means I have time to switch a couple of players who perhaps turn out not to be getting game time.

Not against the idea, but I prefer holding for DGW if possible. Doing so won m my ML last year without doubt.

As basic as it gets? bored now!

    Pickford (4m)
    Estu / Gabriel / Chilwell (Baldock/Beyer)
    Enciso / Salah / Mbeumo / Saka / Bruno
    Haaland / Jesus (4.5)

    1. MJF
      3 years, 10 days ago

How certain can you be that Encisio starts?

I was looking at him and Joao Pedro, but I don't know if I can be bothered worrying about the teamsheets when I could just have Mitoma.

Not certain at all! but he did look really good toward the end of last season, I would rather Mitoma but can't really free up the funds elsewhere. I know there's a lot of no Salah drafts out there, so if I did that I'd get a lot in the bank, but a bit scared of that option currently as expecting him to be a big part of a good liverpool attack this season.

Until we know the situation with Kane this is impossible to answer. If he leaves Richarlison becomes an option, if he doesn't leave I wouldn't touch Richarlison.

Can someone convince me why Onana is apparently the obvious GK choice? He's a worse shot-stopper than De Gea and I think the supposed increase in bonus points he'll get just from being better with his feet has been massively overstated. Would De Gea be this highly owned if he was still there and priced at 5.0?

(Before the Man Utd fans come at me, obviously I'm talking purely FPL-wise. Onana is an upgrade on De Gea and will make the team better, I'm just not sure that necessarily translates to FPL points)

He's a 5.5 keeper that has a 5.0 rating. When you look at some of the teams like Wolves that have a 5.0 keeper, and the teams that have a 4.5 keeper, it's really a no-brainer.

Bear in mind, De Gea was a solid late-game pick last season after the Liverpool debacle.

I'm not saying having a 4.5 keeper is bad by the way, just that you're sacrificing quality by going with Everton, Fulham and maybe Brentford defensively.

Man Utd's xGC numbers over last season were significantly worse than Man City, Newcastle and Arsenal, and similar to Brighton, Brentford and Spurs. 5.0 seems about right to me

How is it 2023 and De Gea still has a reputation of being a good shot-stopper? It's also mainly to do with the fact it's a nailed-on option for the team who kept the most clean-sheets last season for 0.5m less than their best DEF player. Ramsdale + Shaw was the hot combo before Onana's price was revealed.

He will have very high passing stats so will be a baps magnet. If Utd get a CS he's likely to get the 3 bps.

I'm very wary of starting without Salah. But the tradeoff is quite stark. If I go without Salah my team is…

    Onana // Aréola
Trent Gabriel Estupiñán // Colwill Baldock
    Rashford Saka Foden Mitoma Mbeumo
    Haaland Jesus // Archer

To get from Foden to Salah, I'd have to downgrade Onana (Flekken), Trent (Stones) and Mbeumo (Nakamba), playing Colwill or a different 4.5 DF. Part of me still thinks it's worth it.

Agreed. As a LFC fan I trust our attack, especially Salah, but not our defence. I don't see Trent as a better asset than Jesus, Rashford, Saka or Fernandes especially with cheaper alternatives like Shaw or Stones

Yeah, looks good. I'm on something virtually the same with a couple of tweaks.

Prefer a nailed 4.5 option to Ake, for security of starts, plus the spare 0.5m it provides for doing Estu to Chilwell (if required).

Good point regarding Ake. Pep roulette bound to strike at anytime.
Chilwell looking good pre season, Brighton got some noice fixtures.

Also keeping an eye on Enciso to gain an extra 1m but quite inconsistent starts pre season.

I'm glad an article has been written on the Salah & Trent selection .
I'm planning to start with both
It is encouraging to see this puts me in the minority situation so if they perform well they will be useful differentials
Would also create havoc in squads trying to transfer them in
Planning to captain Salah in g/w2 with Bournemouth at home .
If after then he's not performing I'm looking at bringing in KdB if he is playing well
    Currently on 9.6% ownership
    Great fixtures
    GW3 Sheff Utd away
    GW4 Fulham home
    GW5 West Ham away
    GW6 Forest home
    GW7 Wolves away

I'm starting with Salah, but I just don't see enough CS points in those first 8 fixtures for Trent to be worth his price.

I think he'll be outscored by Martinelli, Bruno, Jesus etc in the same price range, possibly Watkins too.
