GOALKEEPERS

The best goalkeepers for UEFA Champions League Fantasy 2022/23

Barcelona held the best defensive record in Europe last season, keeping a huge 26 clean sheets in 38 La Liga matches. With rumours that the likes of Jules Kounde (€5.0m) and Joao Cancelo (€6.0m) will be rested for Antwerp, Marc-Andre ter Stegen (€5.5m) could be the safest way into this elite backline.

Should he fail to return, the game has provided us with a gem. Yann Sommer (€4.5m) is the man between the sticks for an Inter side that collected an impressive eight Champions League clean sheets last season. Armed with a budget-friendly price tag, he’ll play on Wednesday.

DEFENDERS

The best UCL Fantasy players for Matchday 1 2

Another side to record eight clean sheets was winners Manchester City. With a game against Crvena Zvezda at home, where the English side is strongest, defensive investment could be a priority. One of the cheapest routes into it is Manual Akanji (€5.0m). The centre-back began three of his side’s last four matches and, with key injuries at the back, should start the opening game.

The Inter defence has been very efficient for some time now. However, the most appealing factor is that their back-three system allows wing-back Federico Dimarco (€5.5m) to surge into some of the most dangerous positions. Dimarco proved his creativity in Europe last season by registering five assists. Yet his most recent form of three assists in four Serie A matches has caught the eye even more.

Meanwhile, RB Leipzig open against Young Boys. The Swiss side flopped in their last couple of UCL campaigns, finishing bottom of their group on both occasions. With that in mind, it could be hugely beneficial to bring in one Leipzig’s flying full-backs. The standout one is Benjamin Henrichs (€4.5m), after two assists and one goal in this season’s first four matches. He has major offensive potential.

By hosting Salzburg, Benfica have a great opportunity to keep a clean sheet. Centre-back Nicolas Otamendi (€5.0m) doesn’t even need attacking threat, after racking up a whopping 71 ball recoveries last season. In UCL Fantasy, that gave him 20 points towards his total.

Napoli’s early domestic league performances are enough to put anyone off defensive investment. But a large contributing factor towards their Serie A title was their strength at the back. Their opponents Braga currently sit eighth in the Portuguese league. Considering that alongside his cheap, enabling price, centre-back Juan Jesus (€4.5m) could be a good option.

MIDFIELDERS

The best UCL Fantasy players for Matchday 1 1

As well as defensively solid, Inter have looked offensively relentless – scoring a massive 13 times in four matches. The cheapest and most effective way into this lethal frontline is Marcus Thuram (€6.5m). He has the benefit of being categorised as a midfielder whilst actually playing in a more advanced position. This has led to two goals and two assists so far.

Also averaging over three goals per game are Leipzig. The injury to standout attacker Dani Olmo (€7.0m) is frustrating for UCL Fantasy managers but they do have another weapon in the form of 20-year-old Xavi Simons (€6.5m).

One of the most exciting young talents in Europe, he has notched three goals and four assists in five matches for his new side. He could be difficult to ignore, with multiple routes to points, form and a good first fixture.

Elsewhere, Feyenoord come into the new Champions League season as Dutch champions. There’ll be a rematch from the 1970 European Cup final when facing Celtic, who are struggling to regain their historical continental form.

In fact, they finished bottom of last season’s group whilst conceding 15 goals in the process. Managers can target their defence via cheap enabler Luka Ivanusec (€4.5m). With one of the lowest midfield price tags, he has started the last two matches for his side and picked up both an assist and a goal.

Having notched up 94 goals in the 2022/23 Premier League at a rate of 2.5 per game, finding multiple ways into Man City’s attack could be rewarding. Standing out from the disappointing mid-priced options is Phil Foden (€8.0m), whose minutes and output seem to be progressing as the years go on. This season, he has picked up a return in three of four league matches. Facing the out-of-form Serbian champions could mean lots of Man City goals and Foden has both the potential and form to benefit from that.

Many fans assumed that the departure of Karim Benzema and injury to Vinicius Junior (€11.0m) would dampen interest in Real Madrid’s attack. However, the start made by new signing Jude Bellingham (€7.5m) has put a lot of that doubt to bed. Five matches, five goals and one assist. At his price, his central attacking position could make Bellingham one of the game’s best assets.

FORWARDS

FPL Gameweek 4: Saturday’s goals, assists, bonus points + stats 14

Barcelona were one of the strongest home teams in Europe last season and opponents Antwerp – already expected to struggle at this level – have conceded goals in over half of their domestic matches.

Therefore there’s a lot of appeal for focal point and penalty-taker Robert Lewandowski (€10.0m). One of the best forwards to ever play Champions League football is showing no signs of slowing down, even at the age of 35. A trio of goals and assists have arrived during five La Liga appearances.

A huge part of Man City’ treble-winning season is attributed to Erling Haaland (€11.5m), one of the most prolific finishers around. He amassed a monstrous 57 goal contributions during 47 Premier League and Champions League matches. Like in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Haaland is one of the most essential players to own, so don’t go without him.

Even so, it will be important to include a great captaincy option from Wednesday’s games should Haaland blank. For that reason, it could be wise to have Napoli’s Victor Osimhen (€10.0m). The Nigerian became one of Europe’s most wanted strikers while racking up 30 attacking returns in last season’s Serie A. His most recent 10 matches in all competitions have brought 12 goals.

CAPTAINCY

Tuesday

Of course, the stand-out choice is Haaland, having started the new campaign in similar form to last time. It will be difficult to pick a more convincing player for the armband. But, for managers seeking an alternative, Lewandowski could be the one. Similarly to Haaland, Lewandowski leads the offensive line, takes penalties, has a great home fixture and is enjoying some good domestic form.

Wednesday

This night could be more interesting. Both Osimhen and Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane (€10.0m) are candidates. The latter faces a Manchester United defence that he’s very familiar with and has bagged four goals and one assist in five starts for the German side. An even more differential contender is Dimarco and his attacking potential from wing-back.

2FTs but no want that really stands out to bring in tbh

I’d say Chilwell Pickford Ode are my weak links but again, no one really takes my interest. Thoughts?

I am replacing Onana with Areola. Will then keep Turner, I think.

Chilwell is also a pain in my squad, along with Sterling and Jackson. Have you used WC yet? I am so close to hitting that button!

          Might need to get Salah...

Still have WC, and given I can’t see much in the market at present, probably hold on for Xmas period. Sterling was very unlucky to get some good points last GW but Jackson was poor. Álvarez?

I have had such a poor start. I need to have an early refresh so I don't fall too far behind in MLs.
Already 90points adrift in a ML I have won 3 years on the trot!

              Definitely getting Alvarez.

I will comment my draft WC [Europe games dependent] - Feel free to comment!! 😀

    Areola

Subs: Turner, Beyer, Bell & Baptiste*

I'm thinking Chilwell > Botman as recent minutes poor, think Botman will be solid and a decent 3 game run coming up.
Not sure what else do - any suggestions?

Don't think Hakimi is worth the premium price personally given their fixtures/group. Di Maria looks a great option for MD1; he's in for me. My Bayern strategy is to start with Kane & Davies and maybe add Sané for MD2 (changed my mind on FH2 as the fixtures don't look great for it)

I think so. Haven't found a balance with Haaland/Kane/Lew that I'm happy with so I'm just deciding between Kane & Lew. Abandoning FH2 swings it comfortably Kane's way I think

It’s all a bit too involved for me, I tend to just pick a team then forget about it! Might actually try and give it a proper go this year though…

            Ter Stegen - Kepa
Davies - Kounde - Di Lorenzo - Ake - Raum
            Simons - Bellingham - Doku - Thuram - Ivanusec
            Kane - Lewandowski - Haaland

              • 4 Years
              2 years, 5 months ago

Understandable. I also just like it as a casual side game & don't spend anywhere near as much time on it as FPL; usually just forget about it til an hour or 2 before deadline. Put a little more effort into thinking about my chip plan yesterday & today though (WC3, FH6). Currently on this:

              Wellenreuther Sommer
              Davies Cancelo Kounde Raum Pedrosa*
              Bellingham Simons Trossard Doku Thuram
              Haaland Kane Di Maria

              * had Acuna in this spot but just seen he's flagged (hamstring, out for weeks) as I was typing this out & now have a nice 4m enabler in Pedrosa. May use this to do Trossard - Sané, still tinkering...

Interesting our midfield is almost identical. Noticed this game tends to be more strict on wingers being classed as forwards, otherwise I'd be all over Di Maria. Tempted to swap Kane for him, but I know he's bagging at Old Trafford tomorrow, just like he always does. Dalot up against Sane and Davies has no chance.

                  2 years, 5 months ago

Yeah a lot of mids just become non-options when they have to compete with Haaland, Kane etc. I've bumped Thuram up to Sané with defensive savings & think I'm done now. I know Thuram is OOP & underpriced but not too sure about Inter's attacking ceiling in the first two fixtures.

      2. Atimis

I'm gonna limitless after MD1 most likely

        1. The Mentaculus
          • 4 Years
          2 years, 5 months ago

That was my initial plan & I do generally like that strategy, but just don't see too many mismatches (i.e. giant v minnow) to attack in MD2 as long as you can get to a strong Bayern contingent with FTs

          1. Atimis
            • 9 Years
            2 years, 5 months ago

Probably will give it a thought but for now mostly focused on the MD1, treating FCL highly casual. Changed Hakimi to Davies, overall like my team a lot bar not having DiMaria, also may overthink having Doku and Rodi over likes of Trossard and Zielinski.

            Ter Stegen/Dmitrovic
            FranGarcia/Cancelo/Davies/Henrichs/Bah
            Bellingham/Simons/Ivanusec/Rodri/Doku
            Haaland/Kane/Lewa

WHU fan, don't like the Emerson pick (double WHU defence, just a no no).

Isak just got 0 mins and Wilson got 90, Isak to be the UCL player, Wilson to be the PL player?

Haaland aside, let's break it down.

Alvarez, fair play, unexpected for most
Eduoard, is anyone really going to back him long term? There's a reason why he's in less than 5% of teams, even at 5.5M. Over performing on xG and xGI
Awoniyi, guy had scored in something like 7 or 8 PL games in a row prior to the CHE game, but nobody was REALLY talking about him, again back by the 6% ownership. Fair play to him for keeping it up... Over performing on xG and xGI
Ferguson, without his hattrick against a team nobody expected them to thump he'd have squat for points
Wissa, blanked in the last three GWs, next two fixtures are nice granted. Performing exactly as xGI would have you expect
Solanke, his team haven't even won a game yet this season, relegation contenders
        Nketiah, minutes doubts, rotation risk
        Darwin, minutes doubts, rotation risk
Antonio, West Ham shocking everyone, nobody going to risk themselves on a fella who can pull a hammy at any moment
Wilson/Isak, we all know the deal here

Aha, sorry, Cyan mentioned top strikers and Jackson barely makes it onto page one...

Jackson is kind of the opposite of Ollie in the sense that he is wasting opportunities, big 3.2 xG but he isn't even getting point returns like assists. Ollie is at least assisting where he's missing his goal scoring opportunities. Jackson isn't and given he's played three potential relegation candidates back to back (LUT, NFO, bou) it's fair to say he has squandered his chance of being kept. Not to mention from GW9 onwards you wouldn't want him for those fixtures unless CHE become a WHU in counter attacking terms and hitting teams on the break. They've an awful run from 9 to 15 (on paper at least).

Let me know if you want me to do any other players! 😀

Neto - 11xGC, 8GC. Overperforming, especially in the CHE game it would appear, nearly 2 xGC but didn't, wrapped up the bonus points for the effort. Only Areola and Foderingham have made more saves so far this season tells me that BOU are going to keep giving up chances. Has an OK run for GWs 8,9,10 against arguably toothless teams, eve, WOL, BUR but nasty fixtures either side.

Martinez - 8xGC, 9GC. Underperforming as is, but at nearly 5M, I'd rather pick up Digne/Cash and wouldn't want a defensive double up and having him would probably push most people towards a triple up on Villa, which you probably don't want.

Vicario - Has made at least three saves per game so far this season, tells me that Spurs are still allowing opportunities on goal, but has a really low xGC (just 6.6) with only 5 conceded. Tells me they're probably quit low chances given away. Argue he was lucky in the Man U game to keep a clean sheet considering the xGC for that game was effectively 2. Would you want when you probably have Udogie and Son/Maddison (triple up on Spurs?) I'd avoid.

Raya - Can't really assess, especially as it was Everton they played. Somehow got 2 bonus points even though only made one save. Crazy IMO that it works like this. Saka must've had an awful game because got the assist but wasn't even in Arsenal's top five for bonus. Potential rotation risk with Ramsdale though, so avoid?

Flekken - xGC even better than Vicario's at just 6.0 with the same amount conceded, not surprising though considering they've only played one of last seasons top seven. Next fixture nice and whilst the nfo game looks good going forward for BRE, NFO just seem to keep scoring right now. Man U away won't be fun, 9 & 10 could see clean sheets but wouldn't want him for 11,12,13. Also they just lost Henry, will this affect the backline a lot? Been interesting to see how Roerslev deputises.

Sa - Just doesn't have a nice run. Underperforming, conceded 11 when only has an xGC of 9.6. Has however played three of last years top six. No nice run upcoming though and at 5.0M, just not worth it as a GK, imho.

Thank you for the deep dive. Tempted by Raya at 4.8, but Arteta's comment means that Ramsdale coming back would hardly be a shock.

No Spurs def so maybe Vicario, but this probably not the week for it.

You left out one your list.
I think Hojlund might be the next shiny new toy, nice fixtures upcoming. United look good attacking wise - nice fixtures. Plus if that goal was not ruled offside there would be a clamour for him now.

Isn't ' Over performing on xG and xGI' just a fancier way of saying a player who is clincial and does not need much chances to create or score goals.

Some people just can't seem to accept that some players are sh!te finishers and some only need a few chances and bang.

I need more data on Hojlund first. The general consensus seems to be he will make Rashford more viable too as he's better off the left?

So it's one of two things. Are they clinical or have they gotten lucky? Is someone wasteful or have they gotten unlucky?

            Examples;

Haaland, 36G, 9A vs 28.5xG, 3xA < Way overperformed what was expected, could some of this be penalties making up opportunities where he wasn't going to score in a particular game? Some of those assists could've come from rebounds from shots? I'd need to check how many pens he scored in the PL last year.
Salah, 19G, 13A vs 21xG, 7xA < Underperformed on xG but overperformed on xA. We all know Salah loves to shoot from everywhere though, hence why he struggles for bonus points. How many of his goals were pens?
Watkins, 15G, 8A vs 16xG, 2xA < More or less on target for Gs
            Isak, 10G, 2A vs 8xG, 1xA < Slight overperformance

I guess it does depend how you look at it. I'd love to know how an opportunity is rated for more intel on this viewpoint

Xg annoys me. Make flawed dubious model to predict reality... attribute any variance in accuracy to reality being wrong. The proper statisticians understand the failings though. Went down that rabbit hole once reading data scientists critically analysing xg models.

What really annoys me is the illusion of knowledge it instills in people. Like you claim differences are due to skill or luck then you express curiousity about the basis for the model. Why have blind confidence in a number.

I'm more using it to show that Ollie is getting in the right situations to score (according to statisticians). Hence why I said are they fluffing their lines or getting unlucky. I then used a few examples from last season to show the variance of whether xG is accurate or not, allowing people to make their own choices.

I don't have blind faith in a number, otherwise my team would have defenders with the lowest xGC and midfielders and attackers with the highest xGI.

I don't mean to single you out I just think xg is assumed to be a very meaningful number because people think statistics are objective and it's human nature to believe anything that provides a sense of order and knowledge.
The old saying still applies. Lies, damn lies, and statistics

            I really want him as well but I don't know who I'd lose here;

Saka, Maddi, Luis Diaz, Mbeumo, JWP.

I guess JWP, just didn't want triple AVL, and not willing to lose Ollie when he's showing up, ya know? I respect and rate the fact you've got him in.

His problem is finishing, never consistent. He should have scored at least 2 v Burnley and 2 v Palace at the weekend. Keeps getting the chances but isn't taking them, but then he has the tendency to go on runs where he takes those chances and nearly becomes essential

I get that he isn't scoring goals, but the dude has returned points in 80% of his games so far this season. Why would people come off that kind of consistency especially if he is squandering chances that he will eventually bury. Feels like a huge risk to me

I've owned Watkins since the start of the season. He is a streaky player and at the moment he just keeps on missing sitters.

Yes he is ticking along nicely, but Alvarez looks too good to ignore. He is undoubtedly undervalued, whereas Watkins is 0.5 overvalued without pens in my eyes. He also appears to be nailed in a City team that is a well oiled scoring machine.

Villa also look great going forward, but I prefer Diaby for price and explosive potential.

I think my transfer this week will be Watkins to Alvarez as I don't think Villa's next three are particularly good fixtures: che, BRI, wol

Then I'll look at doing Eze to Diaby with the spare cash in a week or two.

Always got the wildcard or free transfers to bring Watkins back if he does start firing.

But in a straight pick between the two, surely you would also rather have Alvarez at this moment?

      1. Zenith UK
        • 9 Years
        2 years, 5 months ago

In a straight pick maybe, but I'm running both with Haaland. City will trip at some point and a double MCI front line is going to obliterate your GW score.

CHE have two clean sheets this season, one to Luton, one to BOU (where Sanchez actually ended up with the three bonus points) but that's not a good fixture for Villa to have?
WOL haven't kept a single clean sheet this year, but that's not a good fixture for Villa to have?

I get that Pep has said that Alvarez is nearly undroppable, but it's Pep, everyone is droppable. Their squad, imo, is quite thin right now, so are they going to be able to manage Europe/PL without the rotation freedom they usually get?

          • 16 Years

I pointed out a few weeks ago my research led me to the conclusion that pep had been training Alvarez for a new role to replace de Bruyne and he was the key player in the AM role whereas Foden would share the right side slot with bilva, and doku. This was mainly dismissed because Foden was flavour of the week. He is integral to the system as opposed to Foden, Grealish, bilva, doku who are specialist alternatives to each other.
It's city though so sure he'll probably get the occasional rest like kdb and rodri do too.

Doubling or tripling any attack is fine always. Judge each individually

Can't see them finishing in European places on current form and given the competition for the CL spots. I can see any of Arsenal, Liverpool, Brighton, Newcastle or Spurs getting into the CL, then ManUtd always seem to end up around there even when playing poorly, and the likes of Villa will be challenging for EL then as well.

    Difficult one:

Is Neto being the top scoring keeper a fluke (I know he has saved a pen) or is there something in the way BOU play? He makes plenty of saves and Cherries give up a lot of xGC. I am looking for a keeper like Fabianski of a few years ago who can haul against anyone - thought it would be Pickford, but the Dyche magic seems to have gone...

Is Bell more attacking than Cash too?

Those numbers would suggest to me both concede anyway...

Arsenal are twice as likely to keep a clean sheet than Spurs.

for anyone weighing up Gabriel/Saliba or Udogie.

G, thoughts on our season so far and how it might progress based on current form/progress and what you're expecting to happen in January?

Call me biased but I believe we had the best transfer window in the summer even if we were a bit late to the party!

When others said we would struggle without Rice I was adamant we would achieve a top 10 finish and still remain bullish on that so far...

Not sure what to expect in January to be honest! Just trusting in Moyes and enjoying the ride. You never know, we might sign a striker 😉

Definitely thought we overpaid for JWP, not by a lot, just a little, but happy he's making me look silly. January my concern is if this Paqueta stuff gets wrapped up do you think MCI come back in for him?

Glad we stuck with Moyes, glad he's showing what he can do again. Be interesting to see how we handle UEL with extra bodies again this year. We really do need another striker, still.

JWP proven quality just glad he's keeping it up still with us!

If they want to pay big money we'll take it, but I'd rather we kept Paqueta as he's shown he's a quality player...

Problem with Gordon is he doesn't do well at the things that garner FPL points.

I thought he was really impressive in the first few games actually but the problem is Harvey Barnes, and not knowing how the UCL/PL rotation will work out. If one of them starts to look more nailed in the league fixtures then sure

YC magnet at the minute, and in competition with Barnes, Miggy and Murphy for two starting places. He might get the start against Milan tonight with Barnes starting at the weekend.

Should I start Cash (che) over Chiwell (AVL) this GW? Cash is topping all the goal threat stats after 5 GWs for defenders.

I imagine he might be back to a more reserved RB role v Chelsea, but given the current uncertainty over Chilwell I am planning to start Digne instead

I think with CHE's poor showings recently we could see Emery look to capitalise rather than respect them. Be interesting for sure.

Any way you can start both @Miguel?

I guess with Kamara dropping back to cover its not necessarily a more attacking/defensive setup, just a different approach to width. But the fact that Palace had Schlupp LW could have been a significant factor - whatever his faults, it won't be as easy tracking back against Mudryk (if he starts again anyway)

Anyone thinking of TCing Haaland this week? Or got a more favourable fixture in mind? E.g., BOU 11 or SHU 20.

      • 4 Years

No I'm not sure NFO is a TC fixture anymore, maybe BUR/LUT if I was to play it in a SGW

      1. The Mentaculus

Also Leipzig (A) is the toughest of their group stage games so there's a heightened subbing risk

Quite a few SGW options! I was intentionally ignoring DGWs as we don't have any scheduled yet - although, I've only just seen there's a BGW in MCI's schedule!

Broader question: is it too hard to look beyond Haaland for TC candidates?

Yeah at the moment it seems like it has to be Haaland unless someone else has a truly exceptional pair of DGW fixtures

Yer, this is definitely part of my thinking.

Also motivated by the fact I've had a less than stellar start to the season and catching up/maybe even getting ahead is easier now than later on in the season.

When Spurs play Fulham at home the game after Luton gw9 might be even better. As Fulham concede a lot of shots.

I've already used my FT in rage with another blank week from Eze. Would you wildcard this lot or good enough to save? If I Wildcard I would want a Newcastle defender + Maddison + change both keepers for starters.

    Pickford (Turner)
    Cash Udogie Chilwell (Gusto Baldock)
    Rashford Mitoma Saka Saka Mbeumo
    Alvarez Haaland (Mubama)

I'd save the WC as this looks a good team. Maddison has two tricky fixtures, so no real rush to have him right now.

      Is a Botman/Trippier for a Chillwell/Gusto worth a -4?
