FPL is so weird - every time I think the team is set for a decent score it tanks, every time I do nothing and think meh, it does alright.

This has been going on for a few seasons now. And it’s not reverse expectation bias or some other voodoo.

I've pretty much always found if I'm struggling to make a decision or don't know what to do at all, I end up happier if I do nothing. If I make a move that I'm not confident on it often ends up going wrong and I feel like a dummy for doing it. If I do nothing it often ends up going better than doing anything else, and if it doesn't go well, then I have 2FT to remedy issues the next week

I try that too but often do something silly rather than do nothing! I'm fed up now with Odergaard's week on week off FPL rate. Not so keen on Rashford either. But will keep one of my 2 FTs until I can see a better option. Was similar story a few weeks ago, kept them and both brought gains. I'll leave my silliness for Hojlund rather than Avarez for Jackson this GW.

sometimes the art of doing nothing is under rated.

when it seems all fixed, like on a wildcard, is exactly when something can change! So that adds some jeopardy compared to our expectations that all's set well.

if life is about continuous improvement, rather than standing still .... then small and ongoing incremental change is best. This game does offer parallels to the world of work etc.

    Slowly revamping my defense.
Money is an issue since my attack is very expensive.. posting my team below. Let me know if my plan is OK

    Areola (Turner)
    Saliba Estu Udogie (Baldock Kabore)
    Salah Saka Rashford Maddison Mbuemo
    Haaland Alvarez (Archer)

1 FT, 0.4 in the bank. WC still in hand and no hits as of yet and would like to keep it that way(And hence my plan to spruce up my bench)

Ideally was hoping id get botman at 4.4 for baldock but that's out now. So my plan is

Saliba to Botman this week. Would free up a million to upgrade a 4.0 to Villa defender in GW 8 along with Turner to a 4.5 keeper

Can always get zinchenko or Gabriel if I want an arsenal def3nd3r later and their next 4 fixtures aren't great anyway.

    Sounds good?

      We have very similar teams.

I'm likely moving Chilwell on for Botman to fund Foden > Rashford.

I like Saliba > Botman. Good move.

I have the same plan as already have Salah and feel like with some transfers we can get the Wildcard template come GW10 anyway. Do you have a general idea on when you would like to Wildcard out of interest as I'm thinking GW15/16.

You're team is even better set-up than mine for this. Saliba + Baldock to Botman + Villa will set you up nicely.

Im still used to the old days ie 1 WC a season. So i usually play it as late as possible. 2 to 3 adjustments in defense and ive no inclination to even using one. However post gw 12 I will start getting a few risky picks every week plus early transfers etc so I can WC back to a safer team

Of course if I ever need more than a 4 point hit to field a good 11 due to injuries etc then il play it. Theres noone I don't own who I want at the moment post getting a newcastle and villa defender and a sub keeper

    Re: Eze (& mid-priced mids)

Have him but thinking about shipping too. If I'm not mistaken he only returned 2x in a game twice last year. The appeal is (still) that the points can and will trickle in. Sure he could score this weekend or assist the next so for me the question is twofold:
    A) How is Palace looking?
    - For me, a bit disappointing. I'm worried Eze's Xa numbers are inflated by his set pieces (a bit like with Bruno). Eze is popping up in the right places but those right moments don't come about often enough to get me excited about keeping.

    B) Do you see a player (in that price range) with a higher ceiling and a decent floor with fixtures to come where they'll have the chance to feast?
    - Mitoma has BOU but [avl LIV mci] after that is rough
    - Sterling's plum run extends a little longer but many have gone sour on him
    - Diaby really intrigues but why buy him now instead of making the swap in two weeks? Eze's [FUL mun] is on par with if not better than Villa's [che BRI]
    - Bowen's fixtures dull my interest til GW 10
    - Anthony Gordon has the fixtures of dreams but isn't direct enough for my liking. Now, if Barnes could wrangle a permanent spot...
    - Foden (if you put him in that price range) has come close and therefore frustrated but the more he mills around in that goal-hungry city side the more he'll knock on doors.
Doku could be a straight shift. As with Foden, this is a short term swap as the fixtures are wretched after the [NFO wol], but City should be gnashing their teeth at those fixtures. It certainly'll help morale with Haaland fuming at his chance fluffed against Stratford's (and Serbia's) finest.

Wouldn't sell for another tick-over player like Rodri or JWP - seems redundant in principle. It all depends on whether you're fine with that cheap midfield slot consistently occupying your transfer plans or being one you set and forget.

If you've got Eze, I'd only ship if you have an FT to burn or a high-upside guy marauds your dreams and calls after your team.

Tempted by Doku but have Alvarez already so triple Ciry attack can be too much of roulette. Go safe with Mbeumo? He plays every game, full minutes, being their on pens talisman.

Not sure if anyone here has read it but The Athletic had a fairly big interview with Solskjaer, supposedly the first detailed one he's done about his time at ManUtd since being sacked. Obviously it's about stuff that happened a while ago but there's a fair bit in it that sound like things that have been going on a while and probably indicative of some of the current issues around the squad.

A few snippets that stood out to me:

    - [After being asked about signing Ronaldo and saying it was "very difficult to turn down and I felt we had to take it, but it turned out wrong"]
"When you have a group you need everyone to pull in the same direction. When things didn’t go right, you could see certain players and egos came out."

    - [On being sacked, after saying he knew at HT v Watford it was going to happen]
"It was an emotional day. Very emotional. I didn’t think it would be, but it was like leaving your family. I wanted to speak to all the players and say goodbye. I spoke to the coaches and the staff. Then I went back to an empty house."

    - "Roberto Firmino was probably the opposition player who caused me the most problems as a manager"

    - "Some players felt they should’ve played more and weren’t constructive to the environment. That’s a huge sin for me. When I didn’t start games I wanted to prove to the manager he’d made the wrong decision.

Now, a lot of players aren’t like that. Agents and family members get into their heads and tell them they’re better than they are because they have a vested interest. It’s a disease of modern football."

    - "I can’t remember every signing I made, but I should because there was a cap on three main ones every season."

    ...

[On there being a transfer cap]
"I signed up for it when I arrived. I understood my remit and agreed to it. I can’t complain now and I’m not the type to moan after losing my job, but United have spent a lot more in the two summer transfer windows since I was there."

    - [On whether he felt the players "threw him under the bus" or not]
"No. Not really. Some weren’t as good as their own perception of themselves. I won’t name names, but I was very disappointed when a couple turned down the chance to be captain. I was also disappointed when others said they wouldn’t play or train because they wanted to force their way out."

    - [On whether he wanted to sign Sancho or not]
"Yes, I wanted to sign him. Manchester United will never sign a player the manager doesn’t want. That’s not the case everywhere. Jadon was put up as the No 1 target for the right wing by the scouts and when you look at his talent, I could see why."

      cheers Nate.

some good insights and justifications for what he was invoked in.

It seemed at the time Fergie was intent to hijack Ronaldo from going to Man City, that could have been spin including the Rio Ferdinand role etc.

Who knows, at Man City Ronaldo might have stuck a hatful in, and Fergie was right to upset the noisy neighbours but it backfired a bit at Old Trafford.

I'm looking at the Pedro Neto & Callum Wilson punty combo. Neto looked wonderful against Liverpool and his chance creation is currently unmatched in the league. Regarding Wilson, I think How will have to count on him now that Champions League has started and Newcastle have to rest and rotate.

      C for me.

Thank you. I like Rashford for the next fixture but can't lie that I am concern about United's form and the piling injuries.

When Saka has a great fixture in GW7 (BOU) + pens, for a better team (and higher ownership!) it makes the decision quite tricky.

Actually considering Trossard as a temporary make weight given Saka's fixtures trickier after GW7.

Saka has been involved that much from the eye test. He's taken half as many shots as Rashford and the fixtures are tougher for him as well.

Still a good option but if I had to pick one I'm taking the guy with better fixtures and more shots even if he plays for a worse team.

Yeah true. But Rashford at least has a history of being a good finisher even as recently as last season. It's not really the same.

Jackson is unproven in this league, in a completely new team, and is on 4 YCs. As a Chelsea fan do you think Broja gets a start soon? He's fit I think and you could really do with some variety up top since the goals have completely dried up.

Not against ditching Jackson - I'm doing it this week. But it was the reason I held him till now.

The combination of Jackson's imminent suspension and him fluffing chances will undoubtedly give Broja an opportunity (if he is actually ready enough).

Have to remember he's coming off a big ACL injury so he'll need to be managed himself - but would expect him to start into Jackson's minutes soon.

This probably would have been less of a factor if Jackson had notched some goals, or got carded less - his put himself at a disadvantageous position given the opportunity he's had.

But a factor I don't know about is how Poch sees Broja. Have to see whether he favours him at all in any way yet (as he has faves, like Gallagher, and non-faves, like Mudryk & Madueke)

C for me also. Strong preference for Diaby over JWP and we're inching towards the point where Flekken makes for a better fixture rotation with Areola. Like keeping Estupinan (with rotation options to cover) top

        Thanks.

The thing I'm struggling with is the fact Trips is a much better option than Schar.

I've owned Schar before and generally hated it.

I of course like Diaby - but the next two are mixed. Where's GW7 for JWP is especially nice, and no reason he couldn't be invoked vs. LIV. And know knows, could even ship Mbeumo for him!

Also would be losing Kabore's DGW... which may be fine, but it's not the next use of fixture 'advantage'.

Yeah same experience & opinion of Schar here too tbh, but its more Estupinan that swings it for me. Even as a Trippier owner, I'm not convinced his attacking threat is really comparable to Estupinan this season (especially when Tonali starts over Longstaff). The defence in B is probably my favourite in isolation but even if you don't 'need' Diaby & Rashford immediately, there's not much fleixibility to get them come GW9. Unless maybe you just go with Areola & fodder backup GK?

You make a good point RE: Trippier's threat vs. Estupiñán's

I guess it does leave you less forced into playing 2x NEW defence if it does go pear shaped, with Schar.

Whats your feeling on Flekken vs. Leno?

            1. The Mentaculus
              • 4 Years

On an individual level I do have some concerns about Flekken. A few mistakes in preseason led me away from him to Johnstone, and although he's mostly done okay a bit of the funky stuff seemed to be on display again at SJP. What I like about Brentford GKs though (albeit he's clearly no Raya) is their combination of conceding a high number of shots from outside the box but relatively few big chances as a strong recipe for save points. This seems to be a continuing trend as this season as they've conceded the 8th most shots outside the box but 5th lowest big chances.

None of those concerns with Leno & his superhuman xGC. Although Fulham aren't as strong defensively I think they're decent enough as long as Palhinha is playing and Leno is very capable of some massive hauls. I imagine his points will be much more inconsistent than Flekken but in rotation he's still a good option

most of the attacks are good.

      fwiw I prefer C and D.

don't really like double Newcastle defense and on a wildcard Raya is the best bet in goal I think to get an edge.

Reason for not liking the doubt NEW defence? (I'm all ears!)

I'm happy to wait on Raya, purely as it I guess it's not 100% he starts yet, but agree potentially great very soon.

I just don't think many defences will get many clean sheets and so it's worth having a spread across the back.

I also think that Newcastle will find it tough overall despite a favourable league run.

In fairness Milan battered them with 25 shots, just 9 on target but it was mostly a defensive battle for Newcastle and add in the emotion, the extra demands this season and the travel I think they'll struggle a bit midweek to Saturday/Sunday.

That said, I'm happy to get a Newcastle defender in.

    Another good article.

This I found interesting this morning, but probably of more relevance to work and the outside world than just FPL confirmation biases.

    https://twitter.com/SteveStuWill/status/1704246991860195489?t=Pwl5l-wKDMSnT5DAaZVqpg&s=19

The thing about confirmation bias, even for those aware of it almost by definition we get drawn into it.

I think you do see it alot.

But it's almost how society, religion, any club, company or organisation is configured and operated. So it's a deeply structural thing too.

Okay folks, after the worst possible gameweek and plummeting 1.5 million places, it's time for the wildcard.

Earlier than planned, but have so many fires to put out, and don't want to take a -8

Wouldn't read much into that a few days from deadline. Jackson form is poor. Eze a bit better though not as good FPL wise as some might have hoped for. Mitoma form best of the three for me. But in a Brighton team with a lot of attacking threats to split points with, Estupinan included. Eze in less attacking side but one of their main threats with in form Edouard. Jackson will prob go nuts now and grab a brace!

Yeh rotation is big issue at Brighton . Eze only scored 1 goal all season and no assists which puts me off. Diaby good pick but difficult fixture so mitoma for me

              • 14 Years

Not just rotation though. Mitoma could get a goal and other Brighton players get more FPL points in same game as him. There's no Jack Grealish Villa last season options but he was gold because he got a big slice of their attacking returns.

Seen quite a few comments from fpl experts about Brighton having tough fixtures.
If mitoma gets rested in Europe I think I'm going to keep him as think brighton can score in so call tough fixtures

Villa away GW7 (who only kept CS vs Everton)
Liverpool home GW8 (only kept CS at home to villa)
City away GW9 (City have conceded v red star Belgrade & Fulham in last 2 home matches)
    Good fixture run from GW10

Brighton such a good attack I'm happy to keep mitoma & bench estu in tough away fixtures

Not an FPL relevant injury - but Peresic has suffered an ACL injury.

Spurs have Son/Solomon/Johnson for that so unlikely to affect much, but it is one less person they can put in at LW.

    Richy mins+, Son LW mins+ (?)

Also Maddison won't have his corners stolen now, sort of good for FPL.
