TopMarx Fan of Fantasy Football and Monty Python. "Archimedes out to Socrates, Socrates back to Archimedes, Archimedes out to Heraclitus, he beats Hegel. Heraclitus a little flick, here he comes on the far post, Socrates is there, Socrates heads it in! Socrates has scored! The Greeks are going mad, the Greeks are going mad! Socrates scores, got a beautiful cross from Archimedes. The Germans are disputing it. Hegel is arguing that the reality is merely an a priori adjunct of non-naturalistic ethics, Kant via the categorical imperative is holding that ontologically it exists only in the imagination, and Marx is claiming it was offside. Minteh looked great, but so did Adingra who came on.
Wellbeck not bad either, enciso still coming and new signings...
    Maybe Mitoma best brighton option.

Not looking that way until GW12, but maybe earlier if someone proves to be fixture-proof and nailed

Us Minteh owners a little unlucky yesterday. Looked good for 45 minutes and maybe the best 5.5. Hopefully he’s cleared of his head injury and starts next week.

Brentford’s style of play suits Quansah, right?
Also, I can’t see Toney starting the match, so I guess there’s a chance Konaté comes on after 60 mins (hopium)

Not according to slot - it was a tactical move he wanted someone who could "win the duels". He wasn't aggressive enough.

To be fair though, weren't Ipswich playing particularly aggressively which is what Liverpool were struggling with?

    2. Ze_Austin
      • 7 Years
      1 year, 11 months ago

Long balls and aerial duels are Brentford's trademark, not just Toney's. Those are the reasons Slot gave for bringing Konate on. I'm sorry

      ...

'We don't have to speak about tactics if you don't lose so many duels. I think we needed to win the long balls through the air. That helped and gave us control. I don't think Ipswich could keep up with the tempo in the second half.'

    3. The Mentaculus
      • 5 Years
      1 year, 11 months ago

If the concern is aerial duels, you'd better hope it's Wissa up top. But if Brentford are willing to start Toney then they would surely have picked up on this

      1. adstomko
        • 10 Years

        Hmm, tough call.
It’s a home fixture for Liverpool where they’re expected to keep possession and dominate, so I may keep Quansah

    4. Hairy Potter
      • 11 Years
      1 year, 11 months ago

Not sure. From sporadically checking on Minteh last season, I got the impression that Slot wasn't afraid to tell the media about shortcomings in individual performances of young players. Whether that translates to subsequent benchings, who knows.

    5. Bushwhacker
      • 7 Years
      1 year, 11 months ago

I think Quansah starts at home and plays 90 unless he runs into trouble. Was a tactical switch due to the direct Ipswich play.

  4. Lord of Ings

Morning all, which one would you bench out of the 3?

    A) Wood (Sou A)
    B) Esr (Lei H)
    C) Murphy (Bou A)

Currently benching C but I’m a little confused..

    1. Hairy Potter
      • 11 Years
      1 year, 11 months ago

Probably C. From what I saw, Newcastle looked off the pace yesterday before the red card. Maybe Bruno and Gordon gain some sharpness in training this week.

      1. Haa-lala-land
        • 5 Years

I think Southampton were just plain good, more so than Newcastle being off it

        1. Hairy Potter
          • 11 Years
          1 year, 11 months ago

Newcastle struggled against Southampton's fluid 3-5-2. Armstrong and KWP finding space and the RWB attacking Hall. Newcastle had similar initial issues against Hull's formation in preseason, until some tactical tweaks. Bruno was definitely slightly off it, and doing his running as if pulling a caravan getting back, though Southampton did target him when he got possession. Gordon didn't look sharp.

Hard to tell as only really got the pre-red card performances to really go on. Newcastle's midfield dropping deeper probably helped with closing the gaps that Southampton had exploited before.

Murphy - Newcastle different animal away plus he is not a definite starter always the Barnes threat.

      Wood - on form
ESR - literally pivotal to Fulham against a promoted side at Craven Cottage

    Morning all
Anyone notice these leagues on FPL which averaged +110pts.

    https://fantasy.premierleague.com/leagues/29298/standings/c?phase=1&page_new_entries=1&page_standings=1
    https://fantasy.premierleague.com/leagues/285275/standings/c?phase=1&page_new_entries=1&page_standings=2

Each league has exactly 90 players, and seem to be based primarily in Malaysia. Some sort of AI being applied to create teams?

Is Everton's defense really this bad or yesterday's result was just bad luck?

    1. diesel001
      • 9 Years

Look poor to me. Their best defence is probably:

      Pickford
      Patterson Tarkowski Branthwaite Mykolenko

Patterson and Branthwaite are out and their replacements are poor (Ashley Young / Coleman and O'Brien / Keane).

Of the defenders with around 5% or more ownership, Barco, Quansah and Mykolenko look like immediate transfers for owners.

Barco isn't going to start given how well Brighton played yesterday
Quansah isn't going to start given he was seen as poor by Slot and subbed off at HT yesterday
Mykolenko isn't going to get points while Keane, Young and Coleman are in the team

    1. Bushwhacker

Havertz (c) and triple Arsenal doing bits for me. I'm doing really well for a non-Salah team + Haaland. Spurs could yet sink me since I have none of them but I'm very happy overall.

Starting to go off the WC4 idea now, looking at it, I’m not sure I won’t be making change for changes sake.

A few minor tweaks here could do.

As in, without wildcarding early you would obviously be happy with your team so why roll to 5 when you can just wildcard at the time when you become unhappy.

Still absolutely baffled as to how Luis Diaz blanked. He could easily have hauled with at least a goal or two. Just wasn't his day. Looked so threatening and properly point dodged. Hopefully he's keeping them for Brentford at Anfield..

Isak would likely have done well only for the sending off of Schar.
It is not as if you could have foresaw Schar getting up close and personal with that Brighton player.

        1. Hello Palou
          1 year, 11 months ago

          Southampton you mean.

Tbh Newcastle didn't look too great even before the sending off, food for thought.

You are the second person that said Newcastle were not great.
I am starting to think I must have misinterpreted the match. Because the bits I saw I thought Newcastle were full of energy/covered ground and were structured.

Southampton did not really impress me at all they seemed very one dimensional and did not know how to create angles/movement making use of the extra man. It was just hit and hope shots. Which no doubt gives the stats people XG to pure over. But they never looked like a serious threat.

            1. Hello Palou
              1 year, 11 months ago

Just the impression I got, you could have said the same about Liverpool after the first half though.

The sending off changed the game but it certainly didn't seem one way traffic before that.

Very true. And the 'recipient' collapsed like he had been shot. Really think something needs to be done to stop this play acting. If he didn't go down, Schar would not have got sent off.

It really annoyed me that Southampton player should have been at least booked for "simulation".
There are youngsters watching games like that and they will copy that. I am not saying Schar was right in what he did. But the overreaction was in many ways even worse, in my view.

Leaning towards keeping Quansah & would recommend similar.

Think there will be a more valuable use of your transfer than using it on a £4.5m defender!

Assumption being that most would be in a position to field 3 playable defenders this week (even those with Quansah + Barco).

    https://x.com/BigManBakar/status/1825097137991950791

i.e. "Help me protect my team value"

Meanwhile AZ was recommending Barco and came out with a (nice) and
genuine apology... then Zoph weirdly says it "disappointed to see"

    https://x.com/ZopharFPL/status/1825008466404024592?t=-YxOcoZj62RKOeVra-E8rw&s=19

I agree no need to apologise weirdly, but a strange way to start that tweet. I thought it was actually quite nice to see an honest follow-up.

I think it's a personality thing. Az seems like a nice bloke and he was quite firm on his view (as a Brighton fan) that Barco was key to the way the new manager wants to play - so I guess he feels a bit more responsibility for the decisions of others than he should.

Strange he feels the need to apologise. I guess he did it with the best of intentions. CCs sometimes get emotionally attached to picks as if they are responsible for how well that pick does.

Many picked Barco given his price, preseason minutes and Estu injury doubts. I doubt most bought because Az apparently recommended him.

LTTS. If you are still about:

    Hendo 4.0
    Gabriel Saliba Quansah Hall Faes
    Salah Jota Gordon ESR Kamada
    Haaland Isak Jebbison

Quite happy to do nothing. My transfer moves are:

    1) sell Salah to ?
    2) sell Haaland to ?
    3) trade Gordon and Jota for cheapie and premium

As nothing is obvious I am happy to wait. Haaland the likely sale in gw4 when information is available. Otherwise its just stirring rubbish around

No massive immediate rush. Would say slight question mark on if Hall & Quansah start next match, but with a starting 4.0m in the wings and a chance they do, not urgent enough to have to move right away. (Defenders with better fixtures from GW3 on.)

Even after one GW it feels like a mistake to not own Salah and an Arsenal defender. Every time Salah scores and Arsenal keep a CS I’m going to get punished hard. Maybe stating the obvious but still.

      Not played for 4 years.

Hardly ever went without Salah, captained him yesterday and probably will 12-15 times this season.

Arsenals next 3 aren't great so to me thats less of an issue, I may sell a few of their players to get in Haaland, it was always the plan and getting 30pts from my 3 Arsenal hasn't changed that.

Personally - I feel not 100% sure he will haul - possible wait with this one until at
least after the Chelsea game today - if he hauls big then GTG

My concern is Man City missing Foden but more importantly Rodri, when he plays whole team
moves further forward & additional chances

My point is: any haul in Chelsea game doesn't change his chance to get another haul against Ipswich, does it?
Fun fact, last season Haaland had 7 or 8 double digits and after every one of them he either blanked or got 5-8 pts next game. Maybe it's coincidence or maybe there is a pattern.

Don't get me wrong, I have used FH many times outside everybody else doing it (eg. DGW and blanks) but unless you really planned it before GW1 I wouldn't, keep your knees alone.

I know that but a 50% owned Haaland vs Ipswich is a bit different to a say 60%-70% owned Haaland vs Ipswich.

I know it doesn’t change next week, but if he blanks today less of the masses playing the game will buy him next week.

I’m talking all about mitigating my risk of not owning him currently.

All in all I wouldn't overreact about 1 gameweek, by the way it is not so easy to buy Haaland when he's 15m, probably involves -4 or -8, selling Salah etc. Even if he hauls it would be soften by hits and other players scoring.

But of course you do you, good luck with whatever you decide.

My plan was always have Haaland from the start for the first 2GW because of the Ipswich game, even though I wanted Salah.. I intend to get rid for Watkins GW3

Fair enough, early move for Watkins could certainly be fruitful

You don't see City (and Haaland) putting a few past West Ham?

        Because I do.

Issue is you can see them putting a few past anyone haha

            True haha.

Just keep seeing their next two games then Arsenal at home.

Then I look at Arsenals next 3-4 (and don't get me wrong, Arsenal are a VERY good team) and getting Haaland in seems a no brainer.

Non-Haaland owner & not even considering that. Could be famous last words here but I made the switch expecting a slow start for City and I don't really see Ipswich as whipping boys it'd take something very dramatic today to start making me nervous about GW2 (i.e. surprise return for Foden, KDB starting & looking sharp, tons of chances created by them for Erling...)

I wouldn't be surprised if Foden and/or KDB got thrown straight in. I absolutely recall him doing this before with players who have returned from a major tournament and had no pre-season

Yes Foden being back or starting would certainly be a nice go between, even though attacking coverage isn’t really a thing, makes you feel better!

            Yeah it’s because I see 3 options:

            1) Do nothing and ignore the match
            2) Do something rushed and panicked to get Haaland (FH)
            3) Get other City attack to try and bridge the risk

            1. Hello Palou
              1 year, 11 months ago

Granted Pep is a law unto himself but of all the City attackers Haaland is least likely to be rotated, especially now Alvarez has left.

So attempting to cover him doesn't do it for me.

But I wouldn't FH this early no way.

I'm leaning towards getting him in.

It'll mean shedding 3 Arsenal players which sounds mad but as I say the potential for Haaland over the next 2 games is huge imo.

                      1 year, 11 months ago

Yep thats what it would be, I think its worth it but obviously results will make or break that.

                    2. Hello Palou

Knowing me I'll veer this way and that but lets say Arsenal blank next week (Saka/Havertz at least).

                      Thats 4 points.

                      Add the 8pt cost.

If I captained Haaland one goal would cancel those 12pts out.

If buts and maybes but we'll see.

                        Yeah I take your point.

It would be Salah, it usually is.

                        I'll mull it over.

Oh I've no doubt Liverpool will score a few, its why I put the front 3 in from the off.

But will Arsenal score many over the next 4 weeks, Villa away, Brighton home, Spurs away, City away.

Thats what is making the Haaland switch tempting, I'd simply not entertain selling any Liverpool players yet.

                        But Arsenal.....

I could even do this, -8 though and probably depends how Solanke looks:

                        Isak to Haaland
                        Solanke to Muniz
                        Saka to Rogers

                      8. Hello Palou

Its all guesswork isn't it, there is no way of knowing.

Getting Haaland in is usually a 2/3/4 transfer thing which is why its not easy.

      5 changes, something like this:

      Isak to Haaland
      Solanke to Muniz
      Nkunku to Doku
      Barco to Johnson

      Henderson
      Trent | Gvardiol | Porro | Robinson*
      Salah | Son | Doku* | ESR
      Haaland* | Muniz*

I’m on 48 with Henderson, Vdv, Eze, Solanke and Haaland to go. I’m happy I’ll be holding each of these but Mykolenko and Murphy are annoying picks already. Don’t need Mykolenko until gw3 but a price drop looks inevitable. Would you transfer either out?

    1. Tonyawesome69

No - Mykolenko is a long term rotation pick and I would expect Dyche to improve the defence. Murphy sub was due to the RC, expect him to start in GW2

So potentially making a transfer that may drop in price and unlikely to start in your team in GW2, is that a good use of a FT?

I'm in a similar position with Quansah and am keeping an eye on the price prediction sites and if he looks like he's going to drop I'm going to get Konsa with GW3 to 6 in mind (if not I can bench this GW like you).

Good morning all!! Jacob Murphy was a little one week fun pick to me!! Will never know how it would have turned out now after the Schar red card and immediate substitution!!….. initial plan was Murphy to ESR this week but considering Bereton Diaz, should I stick with my initial plan??!! Or go for B.Diaz???

    Thoughts welcomed!!

    Cheers everyone!!!
