Before the 2025/26 relaunch of Fantasy Premier League (FPL), the premium defender pool – ie those £5.5m and up – was predominantly filled with attack-minded options.

But with the advent of defensive contribution (DC) points, there are more and more centre-backs among the big-money men.

Now the old-school cloggers (that was affectionate) can compete with wing-backs with goal potential.

Indeed, were we to have these DC points last season, seven of the 10 top-scoring FPL defenders would have been centre-halves. That’s eight if you include Josko Gvardiol (£6.0m):

defenders best FPL

So, as we continue our crawl through the FPL price list, we put the magnifying glass on £5.5m and £6.0m defenders.

All 31 are assessed in this article…

Don’t forget that we’re the only place you can get historic defensive contribution (DC/DEFCON) data for the last five seasons!

Get signed up today to start your all-important preparation for FPL 2025/26.

VIRGIL VAN DIJK (£6.0M)

 1

Before FPL went live on July 21, all the talk was over which of Jeremie Frimpong (£6.0m) or Milos Kerkez (£6.0m) was most desirable from an FPL perspective.

Now, with DC points up for grabs, our attention turns to Virgil van Dijk (£6.0m).

Of all the defenders priced up at £6.0m this season, he would have gained the most defensive contribution points in 2024/25 (22). By quite some margin, too:

VAN DIJK V OTHER £6.0M DEFENDERS: DC POINTS THEY WOULD HAVE GAINED IN 2024/25

defenders best FPL

Take Kerkez as a comparison. The new Liverpool left-back delivered double the number of attacking returns (eight) as van Dijk last season (four). That was worth an extra nine points to the Hungarian.

But van Dijk was up 18 points on Kerkez in the DC stakes, wiping out that advantage – and then some.

‘DefCons’ are another weapon in the veteran Dutchman’s arsenal.

He’s got the security of starts that the rest of the Reds’ backline can’t yet boast. His only league benching last season, indeed, came after Liverpool had won the title.

With Frimpong, you have the uncertainty over minutes given that Conor Bradley (£5.0m) is lurking. Perhaps there’s less risk with Kerkez – he does seem to be first choice – but given that Kostas Tsimikas (£5.0m) and the overpriced Andrew Robertson (£6.0m) remain at the club, there’s always the nagging doubt that he’ll get the odd breather. The former Bournemouth full-back could pick up some DC points himself, mind, as a sometime hybrid centre-half.

Don’t forget that last season, van Dijk was joint-top among defenders for headed efforts (21) and joint-sixth for shots in the box (23). So there is some set-piece threat there, too.

The opening fixtures are a mixed bag but there are decent clean sheet chances in three, maybe four of the first six Gameweeks:

Speaking of clean sheets, Liverpool garnered the most in the division in 2024/25 (14).

JOSKO GVARDIOL (£6.0M)

FPL notes: 129

As they’ve been lying dormant after the FIFA Club World Cup, there’s not much chatter around Manchester City at present. Pre-season training only began this week, with their one and only official friendly coming against Palermo on August 9.

Much like the Frimpong/Kerkez buzz, the excitement over Rayan Ait-Nouri (£6.0m) has maybe subsided a little since his move. The attention being showered on DC magnets since FPL relaunched has left him, and other full-backs, in the shade a bit.

Ait-Nouri was very eye-catching in the Club World Cup, delivering an assist and threatening more. Three starts in four games bode well; no Cityzen made more.

Ultimately, however, we don’t yet know for sure whether he’s going to be a nailed-on reliable starter in 2025/26.

With Josko Gvardiol (£6.0m), there is that initial added safety, if not a cast-iron guarantee. He made 36 league starts last season, featuring in every single one of City’s last 23 games. Whether it’s at centre-half or left-back, Pep Guardiola seems to trust him (cue the Joao Cancelo-style U-turn…).

There is a suggestion that Gvardiol’s goal threat evaporates at centre-back. It diminishes, for sure, as he’s no longer able to bomb forward.

But were you aware that just under 50% of his shots last season (19 of 40) came from set plays? Two of his goals did, too. That underrated threat from corners won’t go away, even if the open-play menace lessens.

FPL DEFENDERS SORTED BY ATTEMPTS FROM SET PIECES IN 2024/25

And could he benefit more from DC points, too? He was third for those among £6.0m defenders last season, despite featuring mostly at left-back.

If we look at the matches in which he would have qualified for defensive contributions, three (Gameweeks 1, 15 and 31) came when he was a starting centre-half. Another, in Gameweek 29, was when he was effectively playing as a hybrid left-back/left-sided centre-half in a ‘three’, with Rico Lewis (£5.0m) inverting into midfield from right-back.

He’s no James Tarkowski (£5.5m), for sure, but he will pick the occasional DC if he’s used at centre-half.

MATCHES IN WHICH JOSKO GVARDIOL WOULD HAVE QUALIFIED FOR DC POINTS IN 2024/25

Ait-Nouri may soon usurp Gvardiol as the go-to City defender in FPL. But it’s maybe ‘better the devil you know’ with the Croat in the early weeks.

MARC CUCURELLA (£6.0M)

Morning ballers, thoughts on this first draft

    Sels
    VVD, Milenkovic, Udogie
    Neto, Palmer, (S)alah, Rogers, Malen
    Watkins, Gyökeres

    Darlow, Guiu, Esteve, Hoever

Udogie and other 2 defenders will rotate of 6 GW
Malen is my main gamble, but rated him last season and he should of played more.
Structure allows me good cap pick for first 6 weeks at least.
Guiu now at Sunderland and could be a solid 4.5m starting striker - good fixtures for them over the first 6

    TIA

If Guiu doesn’t start then the structure is execrable! Like teams that have a punty player in them you think/hope will do well. No more than two but. Good luck.

That bench yikes. I don't think Hoever or Guiu will be starters for their clubs, particularly the former. Udogie if he's fit isn't certain either so Esteve might be doing a lot of heavy lifting here.

Going to Sunderland makes him an option but he will have competition from Mayenda.

Agreed. Reading into the comments around his transfer, the expectation is that he gets a lot of playing time. no option to buy and SUN paying 100% of his wages, is encouraging. Issue is no more friendlies now for Sunderland. Reading the reports their biggest issue is fire power with Mayenda not firing. With chat of 2 upfront and current underperforming forwards, all encouraging for mins.

TBH what am I expecting from a 4.5m forward this campaign? 30-60 mins and the odd attacking return.

    Draft #1:

    Verbruggen
    Frimpong VDV Ait-Nouri
    Rogers Mbuemo Wirtz Kudus
    Haaland JPedro Gyök

    Subs: Kelleher Baleba Dorgu Guehi

No Salah a risk and Mbuemo spot is currently undecided so up to £8m available for replacement there.

    TYIA 🙂

I’m not sure what the appeal with Mbeumo is. Presumably lost penalties and moving to a much less settled team.

Looking at it, no Salah and no Palmer makes it too risky for me. If you’re going Haaland over Salah, Mbeumo needs to become Palmer and find the 2.5 elsewhere imo

Do you think i can play guiu for gw1 only?

Or would you rather play semenyo vs liverpool (who would otherwise be benched).

Also, who would be the best option from

    A) Gudmunsson
    B) Bijol (benched in GW1)
    C) Rodon

Im thinking Gudmunsson as he has more threat and i would end up playing him most likely for one game only vs wolves

However, Bijol could be better for defcon, and rodon is also an option.

Any Leeds fans out there to give me some idea?

    1. Conners

We've no idea if Guiu will start for Leeds. I think I'd just play Semenyo.

I prefer a CB from Leeds. They'll likely do far better from DC than the full-backs will do from attacking play.

Yes.. Sunderland (sorry, it's still early).

Rodon played every game for Leeds last season and Leeds were fairly solid defensively. (see below for info from a Leeds fan).

Rodon most nailed but never get's attack returns.
Bijol is a monster and will get returns and CBIT, but needs to cement his playing in starting XI.
Gudmunsson will deliver lots of crosses so may get a few assists, but had low CBIT stats last season.

        For GW5 only (Wolves away)
        who would you pick?

For the rest of the time before a GW7/8 WC would be benched, i just need him for when Ndaiye and Tarky face liverpool whilst Guiu is not really an option esp vs villa

I probably should have said that I'm on Rodon because i'm playing BB1 and I know Rodon will 100% start and Bijol is suspended..
If you aren't planning a Leeds player GW1 then your situation is different and Bijol could potentially be a better pick.

This is the big question. I think Bijol will eventually replace him as starting CB, and in some games Struijk will play leftback but there is no certainty.

Leeds fan here - wouldn't say Bijol is nailed but he has been bought for a decent fee and should play ahead of Struijk.

Rodon is the only one guaranteed in the team.

There's no suggestion Farke will play Struijk left back either. Gudmundsson is the starter and Byram will cover if he's out.

If Leeds keep a clean sheet and win GW1 Farke won’t change things GW2 is my gut feeling. Otherwise I think he’ll be straight in the team. He’s currently in my draft since think he’s the long term preference.

I agree with what you said but there is still a chance in the odd game Struijk plays left back if we want more height on the pitch. Struijk has played leftback for us on 25+ occasions and he is vice captain so you'd think that gives him a bit of extra value.
We'll be great at set pieces if Bijol, Rodon, Struijk, Ampadu, Stach and Piroe are all on the pitch.

Farke is conservative when it comes to making changes to winning teams but Arsenal away is a different kettle of fish to what we have played before. Midfield may be where the changes happen. I've seen suggestions on here that Leeds will play a back three with Struijk, Rodon and Bijol in the harder games but again there's no previous evidence to suggest Farke will do anything drastic like that unless things really aren't working.

Trafford is a risk but you cover him well with kelleher.

Trafford is a big unknown, could easily end up as a 5mil benching gk.

If you want NFO defender, statswise N Williams should do better than Aina in the same price bracket.

Haaland is the only reliable way into City attack (minute risks), you can cover Liverpool with Wirtz.
      I'm on Haaland perma-captain.

I think history shows that no one can cover Salah. If you want to bet against him and go with Haaland, that’s one thing, but don’t told yourself into thinking you can cover him with another Liverpool player.

      Salah's GW1 record:

      17/18: 11pts
      18/19: 8pts
      19/20: 12pts
      20/21: 20pts
      21/22: 17pts
      22/23: 12pts
      23/24: 5pts
      24/25: 14pts

      25/26: ?

Any thoughts on cody gakpo. Think he is a bit of a differential and seems pretty nailed on as diaz has left, also had decent preseason?

Not nailed as there's a lot of disruption. If Gravenberch, MacAllister and Szoboszlai all play, one of Gakpo and Wirtz misses out.

If anyone misses out, it's going to be Gakpo. I can't see Wirtz losing minutes after Pool spent that much money on him.

Gakpo is likely to share minutes with Ekitike.

Currently on Salah. However, if I decide to sell Salah for Haaland, who should I sacrifice?

    A) Solanke
    B) Gyokeres
    C) Welbeck

      sorry mate

I think that everton avoided a bit of a lemon in wilson, glad we looked otherwhere in the end

Fullkrug isnt bad, but i sadly would rate the hammers as relegation battlers. Bowen will keep them up singlehandedly on the final day, scoring a hattrick to beat leeds 3-2 in a relegation sixpointer.
The days of UECL are long gone though

I’m really struggling to understand the logic behind this transfer.

I’m afraid it’s going to be a long and frustrating season for the hammers, empty seats and very vocal message to the owners every game.

I’m not a Londoner not a die hard supporter but it is my club of choice in PL.

Been to some games and have to say I have much more preferred the old stadium and the old badge. New was sold to us as a necessary step in order to grow but somehow with the recent transfer moves I’m struggling to see the growth.

Bournemouth no pushovers, and Everton very defensive. Also questionmarks around the service he will recieve with no ran, cunha or sarabia.

I like Bournemouth and good team but whole defence has got gutted just think they’ll be leaky and ya Everton defensive but are they really gonna park the bus against Wolves, still think there’s poetential in all them games. JSL performed well without Cunha, yes Ait nouri a loss but they’ve done a couple of good pieces of business and JSL will be the main man

        Murillo to neco

And ndiaye to 6m.....not sure worth it

    Any thougts on my team?
Want flexibilities and some differentials (Reijnders maybe a mini KdB? And Rice both att and def contributions)
Not set on the 4,5m defenders and maybe a risk with Ait-Nouri ‘cause of Pep?

    Sels (Miguel)
Ait-Nouri - De Cruyper - AWB (VdV, Konsa)
    Salah - Palmer - Reijnders - Wirtz - Rice
    Watkins - Bowen (Kroupi)

    Thanks!

Robinson and Trippier being overlooked a bit aren’t they?

Or is Livramento now preferred to Trippier?

No, Robinson completely died off last season and has an awful first nine fixtures and is overpriced at 5m. Trippier ain’t nailed.

Had amazing fixtures to start with, got loads of assists then from GW25 got nothing, not even a cs as far as I remember. Fulham defenders should not be more than 4.5 IMO

Set on this structure, just need to decide on final spot. 7.5 mid with Guiu or 7.5 forward with Ramsey?

7.5 mid might be Eze, 7.5 forward might be Mateta.

    Sanchez
    Williams VdV Konsa
    Salah Palmer Wertz Rogers
    Watkins Wood
    4.0 ???? Rodon Esteve

I think there's an issue with the picture/screenshot posted under "DEFENDERS SORTED BY % OF 2024/25 MATCHES IN WHICH THEY WOULD HAVE QUALIFIED FOR DC POINTS"
