Monday saw Liverpool host two friendlies against Athletic Club, though neither involved the ill Virgil van Dijk (£6.0m) or sidelined duo Conor Bradley (£5.0m) and Alisson Becker (£5.5m).

This could be good news for the many Fantasy Premier League (FPL) squads that include Jeremie Frimpong (£6.0m), on a night when Mohamed Salah (£14.5m) eventually bagged an attacking return.

Before delving into our Anfield analysis, feel free to check out some other recent Scout Notes:

Liverpool 4-1 Athletic Club

  • Goals: Rio Ngumoha, Darwin Nunez, Alex Padilla (own goal), Harvey Elliott
  • Assists: Rio Ngumoha, Ben Doak, Darwin Nunez

Liverpool 3-2 Athletic Club

  • Goals: Mohamed Salah, Cody Gakpo (x2)
  • Assists: Hugo Ekitike, Ryan Gravenberch (x2)

HOPES OF A FRIMPONG START BOOSTED

“Unfortunately, Virgil [van Dijk] is sick today. We miss out on Alisson. Joe Gomez is not there, Conor Bradley is not there.” – Arne Slot

A total of 32 players received a runout, but none were van Dijk, Alisson, Bradley or Joe Gomez (£5.0m).

Though he was optimistic about the first two being fit for next week’s Community Shield, the Bradley uncertainty is good news for Frimpong’s current 26.4% ownership.

“Virgil [van Dijk], normally not. For Joe Gomez and Conor Bradley, it’s going to be tight. Alisson will be back in time as well.” – Arne Slot, when asked if these will miss the Community Shield and/or Gameweek 1

Arriving from Bayer Leverkusen, calling Frimpong a right-back feels unfair. He’s an attacking force, boasting 28 goals and 35 assists from the last three Bundesliga campaigns. His tendency to overlap should benefit Salah too, as it’ll keep the Egyptian more central.

Therefore, a Frimpong start on the opening night looks fairly likely.

But Liverpool face Newcastle United and Arsenal in Gameweeks 2 and 3 and are yet to keep a summer clean sheet. Indeed, none were kept in their final five 2024/25 fixtures, though they’d already secured the league title after the first of these.

A SALAH GOAL

Is this the best Salah we’ve seen in FPL?

Speaking of Salah, FPL’s most expensive player grabbed his first pre-season attacking return in his fifth outing.

At 0-0, he set up a Cody Gakpo (£7.5m) shot that trickled narrowly wide but soon broke the deadlock. Sent down the left flank, Hugo Ekitike (£8.5m) played the ball across goal, where the 33-year-old was there to convert.

Salah then created Florian Wirtz‘s (£8.5m) shot on target from eight yards out that was straight at the goalkeeper.

In fact, it was a surprise that Salah ended with only one contribution. Handed a late penalty, it still may not have landed by the time you read this. Don’t expect him to lose spot-kick duties, though.

BRACE FOR DIFFERENTIAL GAKPO

A more successful summer belongs to Gakpo. Now up to four goals, the departure of Luis Diaz should see the Dutchman start in Gameweek 1, offering differential potential. Of course, beyond that is harder to call as it depends on Liverpool’s transfer activity.

Very early on, Gakpo’s left-sided cross assisted a Wirtz header that narrowly went over. And after the Bilbao-based giants equalised, he couldn’t finish an Ekitike knockdown.

However, in an eventful appearance, the recently reclassfied FPL midfielder soon made amends by slotting home a rebound from Ryan Gravenberch‘s (£5.5m) attempt – only to then be in the wrong place when an Athletic header deflected in off him.

But again, Gakpo said sorry in the right way. This time, a direct Gravenberch pass set up his strike.

WIRTZ + EKITIKE

Is Gakpo being overlooked because Wirtz and Ekitike are shinier toys?

As mentioned, the German missed two huge chances throughout 74 minutes. His dribbling and crossing attempts were frustrating to watch, too. But despite that, Wirtz’s positioning could excite FPL managers, regularly showing up inside the box.

Frimpong start Bradley

Above: A map of Florian Wirtz’s three shots, according to SofaScore

“We’ve lost with Trent [Alexander-Arnold] a lot of creativity from the back. Trent’s crosses and picking out runners was so special – I think Flo [Wirtz] has this quality as well in a totally different position. But he brings that creativity, the pace of Hugo [Ekitike], the pace of both full-backs – Milos [Kerkez] and Jeremie [Frimpong] today.” – Arne Slot

Meanwhile, in under an hour, Ekitike created two big efforts and had two shots for himself. Though Alexander Isak-based (£10.5m) questions still linger, a strong Community Shield display could fuel a Gameweek 1 bandwagon.

NGUMOHA IS THE NEXT BIG THING

Before all of this, the Main Stand was temporarily evacuated when an alarm went off. When fans settled back into their seats for the first encounter, they witnessed a special introduction to wonderkid Rio Ngumoha.

In a second-string side that mixed youth with some senior squad members, this 16-year-old stood out.

He netted the day’s first goal by receiving the ball near the halfway line, going on a solo run and coolly finishing from just outside the box. Shortly after, the teenager headed down Ben Doak‘s (£5.0m) cross for a simple left-footed Darwin Nunez (£6.5m) finish – the striker’s fifth of pre-season.

Ngumoha isn’t yet added to the FPL game, but this summer’s three goals and two assists might change that. Diaz’s exit may propel him up the left-wing pecking order, too.Definitely keep an eye on his progress.

Elsewhere, a great long-range shot from Doak almost made it 3-0, but he was soon successful from closer. The tight-angle shot would probably go down as an FPL own goal, mind

Starting XI for the 4-1 win: Woodman (Pecsi 46); Stephenson, Nyoni (Piling 67), Robertson, Tsimikas; Elliott, Jones (Laffey 84), Mac Allister (Lucky 56); Doak (Danns 56), Darwin (Koumas 80), Ngumoha (Kone-Doherty 67)

Starting XI for the 3-2 win: Mamardashvili; Frimpong (Nallo 72), Konate, Endo, Kerkez; Gravenberch, Szoboszlai; Salah, Wirtz (Wright 74), Gakpo; Ekitike (Chiesa 57)

FPL Marc Broadcaster, writer and overthinker. Hoping that ‘differential potential’ will catch on.

Hi! Everything should be working as before now - just better and more detailed. We've added sort by rotation, drag to reorder, collapsible filters, minimum one gameweek display back on now. Let me know if anything else is missing

Thanks so much, Sam! It doesn't seem to be working on mobile. I click on a team but it doesn't highlight the row and offer an option to sort by rotation.

Also can you make the menu on the left hand side collapsible (so you can click on it to minimise it and open it back up again) please -- it takes up a lot of the screen on mobile and makes the tables and ticker smaller and harder to see.

Ok so there is no longer a tap team row to highlight. You Sort By > Rotation using the filter, then can select a team.. We are double checking the mobile view now. There will also be a guide to the page itself soon. Hope this helps!

How exactly do you use the rotation filter though? Does it sorts the teams as pairs from top to bottom once you click on Sort By>Rotation?

have the ratings been updated? Sunderland were showing as having one of the best runs over the first 6 (i think) but now that's Chelsea, and palace show up as the second easiest run - they've definitely not been anywhere near the top before, have they?

Hi Sam.. Any possibility the font size could be increased too. Reading the away teams in particular is very difficult. Glad to see the drag Team has been reinstated along with the sort by rotation option. Still find it astounding that such changes are not posted for comment before they are made and so save the grief of you guys having to change back afterwards.

        Or even

Pickford slow starter, Everton don't look to great in pre (that goes for Myko as well). I'd go for Neco or Milenkovic instead of Aina. Some injury doubt Verbruggen. Don't think Areola will CS. Apart from that, looks alright.

Will be interesting to see how that Liverpool defence holds up this season. On paper Frimpong and Kerkez on either side feels too much going one way, very neglected going the other, particularly on the right side where Mo wasn't being asked to do any defending last season. Doesn't seem to be much depth either, particularly given Konate's fragile body. Who comes in when he picks up an injury? Who comes in if Gravenberch gets injured? They look super exciting in attack though so maybe they just plan to score more than the opposition every game.

It seems Kerkez has to hold back with either Bradley or Frimpong with more licence to overlap Salah.

That leaves Gakpo on the left wing.

With the transfer window ending and an internationally week after GW3, would an early wildcard in September into gw4 be a decent play?

This may well enable a BB in gw2 which gives one week to assess the minutes from any cheap Burnley and Sunderland picks.

Currently I have Estève, Dúbravka if he moves and Guiu Paz at Sunderland. If he gets some decent pitch time off the bench in gw1 then BB gw2 looks on.

Has his transfer gone through and if so why's he still showing as a Chelsea player?

It's less of a risk than BB gw1 anyhow.

I am thinking of an early BB (probably week 2 for burnley assets), so what would you do with 12 mill for 1 mid and 1 forward in this team:

        Sanchez Dubravka
        VVD Williams Richards VdV Esteve
        Salah Palmer Rogers I.Sarr ???
        Watkins Wood ???

        A) Beto and Ndiaye/6.5
        B) Strand Larsen/6.5 and Anderson
        C) 6/6 option?

          A looks okay

Everton at home to BHA for their first match in the new stadium at the Dock.

Should be okay unless they get the jitters for some reason.

          B
VdV not ideal on a BB2 strategy

Are United likely to line up with Mbeumo and Cunha up top with Bruno behind them ? Could Cunha/Mbeumo at 8m be good value ?

          Sesko(?)
          Mbuemo-Cunha
          Dorgu-Bruno/Mainoo-Cas/Ugarte-Amad/Dalot

Will probably be the lineup most matches.

        P. M. Sarr or Bergvall or Malen for a punt?

not playing every week, but playing in around 4 out of 8 first GWs

Think I might chance it (unless something drastic happens) with Piroe.

Frees up a lot of cash and I can see Leeds staying up (Sunderland, Burnley, Brentford/WH to go down).

He's 200-1 for the golden boot lol

        RMT

        Sels
        Diouf. Virg. Aina.
        Rice. Kudas. Mo. Caicedo. Ndiaye.
        Igor Jesus. Haaland.

        Dorgu Gvardiol Beto

I understand Igor is a punt. But it’s spicy.

Any feedback would be lovely x

It looks fine for a Salah and Haaland team.

Look at my front 7 below with just Haaland, is that a better balance at the expected of Salah?

From what i have seen and read, Wirtz could be a stand out pick this season.

Considering moving money from defence and the bench boost to accommodate him.

Surely the impact of wirtz over first few weeks will be more than the 10-15 I'll get from bench boost?

I've come around to Wirtz too, if he takes time to settle there's other good options at £8m like Cunha or Mbeumo to switch too.

          Or Gakpo.

Agree. I'll be taking money out of defence tonight and finding a way to squeeze him in

Also ill go for esteve and dubravka double Burnley for gw2 bb

Think the bb is prob overrated and not worth using at the expense of quality like wirtz

This is my front 7 that I'll start, other than the obvious with Salah who I'm betting against for the first 3 weeks, who else am I missing here?

        Wirtz, Palmer, Eze, Rogers, Rice.

        Haaland, Watkins, Guiu.

It feels a bit odd to ignore both Isak and Saka at the outset and I can't afford Bruno in this set up but I could change all that with a wildcard into gw4.
