Defensive contributions. DC. “DEFCON”.

FPL’s game-changing addition is the talk of pre-season. Perhaps there’s method in all the madness, or perhaps there’s simply no beating the old-school premium defender.

First, let’s run the numbers from last year.

HOW ‘DC’ POINTS AFFECTED THE OVERALL RANKINGS LAST SEASON

The below table comes from a great Fantasy Football Scout tool, available for Chief Scout members, which recalculates all the FPL 2024/25 points based on DC points, the bonus changes and any extra assists:

There is a very notable impact on the overall defensive rankings as a consequence of defensive contributions.

Josko Gvardiol (£6.0m), last year’s top-scoring defender, would have subsequently dropped to fourth in the rankings.

Meanwhile, the five best defenders for contributions all feature in the top 10 overall scorers.

It’s safe to say that defensive contributions present huge potential value across an entire season, but the real question is whether they still make for good picks across shorter periods. Do they still provide enough upside?

There are, of course, no guarantees that this year’s results will directly correlate to last year’s data. Teams can set up differently and there’s a wealth of new transfers alongside a couple of managerial changes. But it’s all we have to go off for now, and the results definitely indicate that certain players thrive more than others.

Two graphics stand out most crucially.

Who is the better option at 7.5

A: J.Pedro (will likely also have Palmer)
    B: Mateta

Joao Pedro will definitely get goals in the opening game weeks, he's in form and Chelsea are clicking. But Mateta is better for the longer term as Delap will probably start the odd game or at least chip into minutes.

I'm going Pedro with a view to change once Palace fixtures turn.

Agreed. Early on and taking fixtures into account Pedro seems like a value pick.

Thanks, I like Pedro's explosiveness to start as well. I do think he'll probably get 55 - 70 most weeks to start and as you say start on the bench some games to accommodate Delap. But even with reduced minutes his form has been fantastic in preseason

Exactly the same view here. Plus Pedro currently isn’t on Pens. Mateta’s fixtires improve after the first five/six games.

    A- Haaland, Füllkrug, Guiu

    B- Watkins, Bowen, Pedro

Guiu most likely doesn't start first few GWs, so depends on who covers for him.

Would bench him with a 5.5 midfielder starting.

Option B you bench the 5.5 midfielder.

Interesting. I’m leaning towards B at the moment for the greater flexibility. I do think Füllkrug could be a nice differential, but there’s no one else in that price bracket if he doesn’t perform.

Small tweaks... Assuming Solanke and Dubravka are fit, how's that for BB1 team?

I've really gone off GW1 BB.

This year's pricing and the GW1 fixtures means it doesn't really work unless you go with just the one premium.

Your bench is essentially double 4m defence from promoted teams, plus Konsa who has Newcastle and one of Kudus/Reijnders.

I'm looking at GW16 (Good fixtures, Gifted 5FT's, no Salah, etc).

I'd be worried about having X1 starters come GW1
      Solanke and VDV likely not.
Jaoa Pedro and Kudus and Frimpong all slight doubts
      Reijnders hopefully/should start

I’d actually worry about Forest. They’ve lost Elanga and I don’t see Wood reproducing 200pts again with European matches thrown in too. I’m sweet on Bowen and agree Reijnders a great choice, hopefully he starts.

I havent played for a few years now.. what's the idea behind a BB1 team?
Do you WC straight after or slowly / taking hits get your team to what you want?

    1. Bihom
      • 1 Year
      11 months, 7 days ago

Mainly just to use it whilst you've got all 15 players getting minutes. It's a rubbish chip so I wouldn't let if affect your team-building much unless you are set on an early WC straight after

    2. Deulofail
      • 10 Years

For me, WC GW4 is the current plan. By GW7 you could have a full set of 5FTs anyway. The gradual approach could also work, but if you're gradual for the whole first half of the season, there may not be an obvious time to WC. Getting it out of the way early was the obvious play for me when they introduced the 5FTs last season (coming from someone who would normally save it and save it in case of emergencies)

      1. Deulofail
        • 10 Years
        11 months, 7 days ago

I should say that the conventional logic last season was that 5FTs should delay your use of the WC. I just disagreed (thankfully, it worked out well for me). I'm not sure what the conventional logic is this season as I haven't seen much about it. This season's new rules are the talk of the town.

    3. Red Star Toro
      • 11 Years

There will be more FTs this season due to afcon so an early WC won’t hurt so much

Get off to the best start possible / get as many points on the board in the first game week.

I'm going BB for GW1 but don't need hits to get team I want. Happy with my team / squad as it is, but then easy to free up some funds by downgrading my £5.5m striker to Guiu and then reinvest the extra £1m somewhere else.

You could go for both White & Timber so you know you will have at least one starter each game, with Timber also an (unlikely) option on the left. But Cali & MLS will have good attacking opportunities in the left 8 position when Rice and Zubi sit back

Looking for a new challenge but don't fancy moving to Saudi Arabia? Join my "Lowest Score Wins No Transfers" league.

    How does it work?
    1) Go to https://fantasy.premierleague.com/leagues/auto-join/fupt3f (League Code: fupt3f)
    2) Draft your team, spending your full budget. (Leave £0.0 in the bank.)
    3) Make no transfers during the season. (Zero. 0.)
    4) At the end of the season, the team with the lowest score wins. (Invert the table.)

Last season's "winner" had a whopping 749 points and a rank of 11,126,571.

    Bring all your loser friends.

Front three for everyone should be obvious now

    Gyokeres (9) Haaland (14) Sesko (7.5)

Leave them for the season, and they should return you about 55 goals combined!

Haaland will get about 50 of them, but the other two should be able to chip in with a goal or two each

      Van der Berg 4 Collins
VDB got an incredible amount of attempts on goal but came away with very little.
Collins 4 of his assists were just rebounds of his attempts
Law of averages says Berg gets the more goals and assist this year
      VDB is only 4.5

      1. LangerznMash
        • 9 Years
        11 months, 7 days ago

VDB is a very good £4.5m option but Collins is worth the extra £0.5m due to bonus points, DC points and actual attack returns.
        Collins average CBIT / 90 = 9.92
        Van der Berg average CBIT / 90 = 8.56

Collins had 10 more bonus points and obviously the extra 30 points from attack returns.

He was a 'trap' or at least trap-ish last year so thats maybe playing on peoples minds. I think more generally, his minutes could be in question throughout the season. He'll likely start most games but imo will come off around the 60-70 mark each game. Delap is good enough for 20-30 minutes a game.

            1. Rex Adam
              • 9 Years

Chelsea paid £60 million for him to get them goals. He has already done that preseason. So presumably he suddenly forgets how to score when the season starts...

We said the same thing last year and then he was randomly benched. They also bought Delap for 30m on a 6 year contract. I'm not saying he won't score, I'm simply answering your questions from the perspective of someone who isn't going to own them to start the season. If you're confident he starts most, scores most, than you hearing that us not wanting him should be music to your ears.

Think there's a lot of comparing apples with oranges Brighton last season established Welbeck striker and people wanting to make the game harder for themselves. Chelsea have no established striker and Pedro is now their No.1 striker having watched his immediate integration and impact in preseason. not sure what more evidence is needed that he will be a top 5 asset this season at this price point

                    • 11 Years

Delap is also established. He literally scored more points than Joao and Welbeck last year on a worst team. Again, I'm not saying Joao is bad, I'm saying that I can see reasons why people are jaded by him. Like I said, if you're right than you're laughing. I'm comfortable with Palmer and Bowen for .5 than Palmer and Joao.

Saying he will be a top 5 assets at his price point is a bit misleading. He was 7th for forwards his price or cheaper. Him moving up 2 spots to the top 5 (for his price) is 7 points. Not sure that is worth the amount of time we're even spent talking about him.

He’s been training with the squad since Sunday and they’re arranging a behind closed doors game midweek so I’d suggest yes given United don’t have anyone else.

Please lads I wanna really discuss some thoughts on how at least this looks smart for me at this point:

    Sels (Dubravka)
    Konsa Diouf DeCuyper (Gudmnssn/Esteve)
    Salah Palmer Reijnders Kudus KDH
    Gyokeres Haaland (Guiu)

    0 ITB

It's interesting. It's a bit too risky for me but I don't want to discourage you from punting on Reiknders, Gyokeres, etc...

I'm on Haaland and Watkins for gwk 1 but I may move to Gyokeres in gwk 2. I'd also consider Van De Ven as one of your 4.5's.

Flagged players are players who have red, orange or yellow flags on the FPL site. It means they are injured to some extent.

This is the preseason of flags

So much football in the last few seasons, taking its toll as the PL collects the level of players who'll start for their national teams too

Could I improve this bench on a BB without spending more? They will only play GW1 (benched GW2, FH3 WC4)

    Areola | Reijnders, AWB, Diouf

Could consider doing down to Reinildo and have him play against my West Ham players, but I do like the video going all-in on the established PL team against the newbies. And currently don't have anything I want to do with the extra 0.5.

Leeds at home 1st game is say is good for bench boost but if don't need the 0.5
Swapped him for Anderson to save 0.5

I was on Neco all pre-season but scared off by Forest interest in new LBs. I would go for him you're considering an early-ish WC. If you want to delay the WC further, I would go for Milenkovic. Relatively fixture-proof given his DC and goal-threat.

I am 100% not picking Salah. Can't see him getting anything like the returns he did last season (for a variety of reasons). He'll still get good points, but don't think he's worth the money or will be the leading midfielder (or by much if he is).

For the first few weeks, yes - as unlikely Guiu will start.

My plan is to transfer Piroe out early after BB in GW1

Depends on the rest of your bench. For first sub most weeks/rotation option, maybe. For 2nd or 3rd sub, no.

It doesn't seem sensible to spend over 4.5 on a second playing GK. Better to have 0.5 ITB or in your outfielders imo. If not BBing, you could consider rotating 4.5s or going with 1 GKs of any price along with 4.0 fodder as a makeweight. I don't want to be the orthodoxy police, but I do want to be honest about my first reaction to your team! You will have 0.5-1.0 extra on the bench each week compared to others, simply because you want the BB in GW1 (and maybe a little bit of benefit from rotating, but certainly also a lot of frustration when you bench the wrong one!). However, if you're WCing early, then this does mitigate the issue somewhat

        1. Bloggy
          11 months, 7 days ago

You’re spot on, it’s because of the BB I’ve ended up with a 4.5m second keeper. But good point, let me have a look,

If I get a 4m keeper, I might upgrade Strand Larsen to J pedro
