Hugo Ekitike (£8.5m) and Antoine Semenyo (£7.0m) hauls, a late Mohamed Salah (£14.5m) goal, early substitutions for Jeremie Frimpong (£6.0m) and Milos Kerkez (£6.0m) and a significant amount of defensive contribution (DC) points: there was much to analyse from Liverpool’s opening day win over Bournemouth.

We discuss the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from Anfield below.

SLOT ON WHY FRIMPONG + KERKEZ WERE SUBBED

Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez made their Premier League debuts for Liverpool on Friday.

However, with the hosts leading 2-0, both full-backs were withdrawn just before the hour mark.

Frimpong was surprisingly replaced by Wataru Endo (£5.0m). Arne Slot later revealed Frimpong had “felt his hamstring at half-time”, with no risks taken.

“That wasn’t out of luxury. That was because Jeremie Frimpong felt his hamstring at half-time and made a lot of sprints. He was doing quite well, but the other right-back Conor Bradley is already out with an injury, so we don’t want to take the risk of losing another full-back.” – Arne Slot

Kerkez, meanwhile, was caught out several times down Liverpool’s left flank and had already been booked, so it was no surprise he was substituted for Andrew Robertson (£6.0m).

“Our left-back, Milos Kerkez, is a player that I think the fans like – because every duel he goes all in! But when you have a yellow card already and you play Semenyo, that’s quite a worry.” – Arne Slot

Even before the subs, Liverpool looked vulnerable at the back, as was the case at Wembley last week.

Given how susceptible they were on the counter-attack, you’d expect one of Dominik Szoboszlai (£6.5m) or Alexis Mac Allister (£6.5m) to drop out for Ryan Gravenberch (£5.5m) next week.

As for Virgil van Dijk (£6.0m), he might not be at his top level right now, but this was a better showing than at Wembley. He had a couple of headed attempts and racked up 21 defensive contributions, including 17 (!) clearances.

EKITIKE SUPERB

After finding the net in last week’s Community Shield, Ekitike scored again on Friday, his first home goal for the club.

In an excellent all-round display, he later claimed the assist for Cody Gakpo’s (£7.5m) strike to total 11 points.

He could have added more goals to his tally, too, having racked up four shots, including two big chances, in 71 minutes of football.

This heat map shows Ekitike’s movement against Bournemouth:

Often dropping deep to link play, before running in behind, Ekitike discussed his role – and specifically what Slot has asked him to do – after the match.

“Yeah, I think it’s natural. I also changed my way to play here because I think it’s also different football, with more intensity. The defenders are stronger and we have tight space here. I had so much more space in Germany. That’s why I try to come, link and go, try to run behind. But we have to find the way to succeed with the details, because it’s not [enough to be] ‘good’ anymore and we just have to get better.” – Hugo Ekitike

On his decision to withdraw Ekitike on 71 minutes, Slot said:

“He came later in pre-season, he has to adapt – as I think I can say Liverpool is a bigger club than Frankfurt. The league is probably more intense as well, so for him to be able to play 70 minutes is already a big bonus after being two or three weeks here. So that’s where we are at the moment, because we lost some players.” – Arne Slot

Elsewhere, Florian Wirtz (£8.5m) had a quieter night but did show glimpses of what he is capable of, as he nearly scored in front of the Kop and created three chances.

LATE SALAH GOAL

Salah left it late, but to the relief of many, sealed the victory in injury time.

Captained by 3.6m FPL managers, the Egyptian had previously tested Djordje Petrovic (£4.5m) with a fine shot from just inside the penalty box, which the Bournemouth goalkeeper tipped over.

It continues Salah’s fine Gameweek 1 record. Remarkably, he’s still never blanked.

Prior to Salah’s strike, substitute Federico Chiesa (£6.5m) had restored Liverpool’s lead.

SEMENYO IMPRESSES

As for Bournemouth, they were tricky opponents for Liverpool, as they offered a constant threat on the counter-attack.

Despite having their talent raided over the summer, Semenyo hit a shot over the crossbar in the first half, but quickly made amends with a superb second-half brace.

Andoni Iraola handed first starts to Petrovic, Bafode Diakite (£4.5m) and Adrien Truffert (£4.5m) at Anfield.

The trio produced promising displays, particularly centre-back Diakite, who only arrived from Lille on Wednesday.

A quick word on Marcus Tavernier (£5.5m), too. He was deployed in a box-to-box role and racked up 20 defensive contributions as a result.

Elsewhere, budget options James Hill (£4.0m) and Eli Junior Kroupi (£4.5m) were both benched, but were introduced as substitutes late on.

Now that the trip to Liverpool is out of the way, the Cherries are about to embark on a very decent run:

Stating the obvious I guess, but DC points have radically changed FPL. Tyler Adams got 4 points in a 4-2 loss.

This was clearly an important matter from the outset. It's why we're not shy in starting certain 4m defenders from promoted teams - we can be confident of 2 points more than last season.

Congratulation nonaynever ballsy yes & getting the reward - now try to predict & stay there.

TC-ed Semeyno - against Liverpool away - what are the lotto numbers this evening
      only joking deserved.

Just looked at the top joint three leaders currently on 71 points 6 played what was
interesting all had the same scoring players playing a chip with 5 players to score.

      M.Salah - 8
      Wirtz - 2
      Ekitike - 11
Semeymo - 45 (TC) (15 points) good shout
Tavernier - 4 (Liverpool away - very ballsy)
Evanilson - 1 (Liverpool away - very ballsy)

So far I have had 3 play & acquired 19 points a massive 52 points behind you

      Frimpoing 1 (disappointing)
      Wirtz - 1 (disappointing)
M Salah 16 (capt) didnt play well but pleased with points.

I have played by BB chip to get it out of the way so can then look to main 11/12 players
so have 12 players during GW1 to score

Please can you repost again after the last GW1 finished I would
be interested to see after great start where you have finished.

It's someone's repeat entry team. Just look at the team name.
I'd wager some (non-seroius playing) folks have anywhere up to 20 different teams submitted, in the hope of being rank 1 for the gameweek.
This repeats then every gameweek, which is why the total players keep increasing every week. By season end there will be maybe a million more teams that there are GW 1.

Although this is against the rules, I don't imagine FPL would be all that keen to curb this

So many goals in that fixture recently that I don't think I mind having double attack on both sides (started with Salah, Wirtz, Saka & Gyökeres). Was looking at maybe doing Gyökeres - Mateta for GWs4-5 (and WC6) but will see how Forest & City defence are shaping up before I decide

Yep...must admit as a Salah(C) owner I was getting extremely antsy the longer the game went on, thought I was looking at a blank captain to start my FPL season. It will be interesting going forward if the attack starts to balance out a bit more, or it keeps going with a left sided bias.

Anyone noticed how the goals from pool (Ekitike, Salah, Gakpo) are all low and to the corner (barring chiesa’s). Feels much sharper and more clinical now. Still piss poor at headers though. For all of VVD’s prowess, he’s really poor at getting headers on target often enough

Was there an assist awarded on Ekitikes one? I'm sure there was this season but he miscontrolled it and got lucky. More points more fun though so whatever who cares if we're actually rewarding something tangible

Yeah Petrovič didn’t look very convincing with his low dives. That prob also contributed to the impression

VVD heading ability infront of goal is, to me, reminiscent of Maguires.. both great in there, but both struggle to score. Sure they are CBs, but come on, when you are that strong in the air and consistently know where to be and how to attack the ball, the least you can do is score a little bit more from them.

For anyone who's played the name, they'll know that headers from whipped in high crsses are one of the most difficult things to get right. Perfect timing is required and there's always an element of luck as it also usually invloves defenders jostling and jumping. It's not enough to say top professionals should get it right - it was easy then there would be a much higher conversion of headers.

It might be one of the areas (heading) where the XG stuff becomes rapidly outdated as players get more athletic, practice heading and set pieces in training more. Could explain certain overperformers - Wood and JSL spring to mind. If you can score headers, you probably outperform your expected. Same as if you can score bangers at an above average rate (Cunha) you probably do.

Yeah, good point. The two best headers of the ball I ever saw were Denis Law and Alan Shearer. Shearer was crazily good and I wonder how he would cope today.

There will be less heading in training due to the possible side effects such as Dementia. It's even getting banned at certain age groups now. If we think there's going to be an upside in headed talent in the future think again.

Someone really good in the air will be a real asset in a few generations as will be rare beast.

This is a big reason why Chris Wood is such an underrated player. He's crazy consistent at not just winning headers but crucially targeting the corners of the net. I'd say he's the best in the league at it.

With the game the way it is nowadays there's every chance that this was a strategy they trained all week just for Petrovic.

Anyone else finding the FPL site is broken everywhere pretty much. Click on a player in your team to see how they scored what they did and it just goes to a dead page (on mobile). Absolute horror show on the site side this season. I'd get your bus team in early most weeks as I dont trust that they wont have a complete disaster at some stage

I very much dislike the new design, but I'm using a laptop, not mobile. They seem to have changed things just for change sake, and it's almost as though they have deliberatley made the site more long winded to use - perhaps to flatten out the hits on the database???? Very odd.

Which 1 to bench? Other starting defender is Milenkovic (cpl):

    A) Porro (mcy)
    B) Diouf (CHE)
    C) Esteve (SUN)

With all this CBIT and CBITR stuff and how "easy" it can be for some defs and mids, I think I might have made a mistake not going 4-5-1. All you need is a Thiago/Strand Larsen up top. Strikers just wont be able to keep up in the long run.

5 is normally the way in midfield anyway, they still dominate the points scoring most seasons and there are so many good options right the way down to 5m probably. The defence still needs cleans or you are talking 4 point ceilings every other week at best unless you've got Munoz or similar

The Tyler Adams example higher up is why DMs not defenders in teams who concede a lot will potentially be better as they wont lose points for conceding goals

Defensive Midfielders will struggle to keep up with a 15 goals a season striker.

I've gone 451, was even thinking 541 but not super confident. Will make the game where I have defs on both sides more interesting as I know it wont be 0-0 so could get a decent score even with clean sheet wiped.

Still need the midfield heavy hitters though

    Ekitike looks a great option

Wirtz absolutely invisible especially as an FPL option

Salah’s jammy goal is so annoying.
Literally every man and his dog in my mini leagues captained him.

I went completely different direction(don’t even own him) and had he blanked I would already have a nice point difference between myself and the herd.

Let’s hope that the players which I have thanks to not spending 14.5m on a single one will make a difference today and tomorrow.

Past two years I did the same, last year I capped Isak & Salah bagged a brace.

Some avoided Salah & went for Pool cover, those with defenders are reeling & only Gakpo & Hugo stayed ahead.

But 50% of the game got a 16 point start & there are other players with such ownership, cannot wait for the games to continue.
