If you’re one of several Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers who already massively regret the big choices made heading into 2025/26’s opening weekend, a Gameweek 2 Wildcard has a certain allure.

Whether the plan is to own Mohamed Salah (£14.5m), Erling Haaland (£14.0m) or both, you may feel that enough clues have been revealed to justify such a bold move.

Managers have until the Gameweek 19 deadline to use the first Wildcard. These unlimited free transfers are a chance to fix all mistakes and start planning for the future.

So let’s list the pros and cons of a Gameweek 2 Wildcard, then provide a few draft ideas.

Don’t forget that you can get your Wildcard team rated via our Rate My Team tool or Plan FPL!

PROS

FPL notes: How many matches Konsa will miss + 1

Fix early mistakes

Those owning several of Jeremie Frimpong (£6.0m), Florian Wirtz (£8.5m), Joao Pedro (£7.5m) and Ollie Watkins (£9.0m) may think they’ve got it all wrong.

Especially if they’re invested in Niclas Fullkrug‘s (£6.0m) blank at Sunderland or Dominic Solanke (£7.5m) – sat on the bench while Richarlison (£6.5m) netted twice.

Throw in the Tosin Adarabioyo (£4.5m) knock and a one-match Ezri Konsa (£4.5m) ban, and some of the unluckiest managers have quickly found themselves with fires to put out.

Increase team value

These early weeks traditionally bring plenty of price rises and falls, so team value can be boosted by ditching the droppers and jumping onto bandwagons.

As of Monday, there have already been increases for Tijani Reijnders (£5.6m), Hugo Ekitike (£8.6m) and Antoine Semenyo (£7.1m).

Get some Arsenal

Arguably, the most appealing Gameweek 2 fixture has Arsenal hosting newly-promoted Leeds United. Yet a lot of teams are without any Gunners coverage at all.

Sunday’s win at Old Trafford was a firm reminder of their defensive qualities and set-piece threat.

CONS

FPL notes: What did Howe say about Isak absence? 2

Small sample size

On the other hand, it’s way too reactionary to make calls this early. Those earlier ‘mistakes’ were purchased for logical reasons, based on more than one runout.

Have faith that they’ll deliver in the next one or two Gameweeks.

Real-life transfer window is still open

Meanwhile, choosing to Wildcard while the summer transfer window is still open could soon backfire.

For example, we don’t know where Alexander Isak (£10.5m) will end up and how it’ll affect Ekitike. Perhaps Yoane Wissa (£7.5m) moves to Newcastle United, as rumoured.

Tottenham Hotspur should be active in the next fortnight and the possibility of Eberechi Eze (£7.5m) is exciting.

GAMEWEEK 2 WILDCARD IDEAS

DRAFT 1: SALAH OVER HAALAND

FPL Gameweek 2 Wildcard: Pros, cons and three possible drafts

Ok, Haaland won the first round over Salah and has better fixtures in Gameweeks 2 and 3. But the Egyptian King has earned our trust many times over.

This 3-5-2 squad happily ditches West Ham United’s assets and covers the one-match suspension of Konsa.

Furthermore, Morgan Rogers (£7.0m) and Micky van de Ven (£4.5m) are preferred over teammates Watkins and Pedro Porro (£5.5m), because it unlocks the money required for Bukayo Saka (£10.0m). He can now be given Gameweek 2 captaincy.

DRAFT 2: HAALAND OVER SALAH

Really want to wildcard to do Salah to Haaland. He got Newcastle and Arsenal next could be big swings.
Then just get palace and Bou players aswell who we’ll want anyway.

Yeah, it's normally a high scoring fixture though Newcastle look solid at the back. Villa barely had a sniff.

Congrats! Yeh Stach has been in my team as 5th mid since the beginning.

Added bonus of the late Leeds pen taking Ndiaye's CS point away from my draft head-to-head league rival, giving me a 60-59 win.

    RMWCT

    Sels
    Gabriel - Dorgu - Cash
    Palmer - Saka - Semenyo - Reijnders
    Haaland - Watkins - Wood

    Dubravka - King - Reinildo - Gudmundsson

    Plan is -

    GW 3 - Save FT
    GW 4 - FH
    GW - Palmer + Saka ➡ Salah + 6m mid

    Thoughts? 🙂

Also considering Gyokeres + Mbuemo instead of Wood + Saka

Then Gyokeres down to Wood in GW 3.

Follow the rest of the plan then.

Also on WC here after 73 with FH week 4 (but plan on BB week 3)

Your team lacks massively on the DC monsters - Lacroix, Tarkowski, also rather Ait Nouri and Cucu as having best of both worlds, DC potential, bp and attacking chance.

Rest is decent, but I would like United coverage for week 3: Perhaps a simple Saka to Cunha is needed week 3.

BB was a disaster. 52 all out. Have decided to wildcard early. Team was

    Verbruggen, Kelleher
Van Dijk, Diouf, Van de Ven, Konsa, Neco
Salah (c), Palmer, Wirtz, Rutter, Ndiaye
    Watkins, Piroe, Fullkrug

Have decided to ditch Salah and Palmer as a risk to get to this sort of differential team

    Verbruggen (Dubravka)
    James, Saliba, Munoz (Reinildo, Esteve)
    Rogers, Mbeumo, Eze, Wirtz, Saka
    Haaland, Evanilson (Guiu)

    Your thoughts?

Wouldve preferred Mateta and Semenyo over Evaniulson and Eze but 0.1 mill short

I really don't like it if I'm being honest.

How have you managed to make a WC team without Reijnders?

Reijnders is a good pick but with too many options in Pep's team, i feel he might play deep or even be a rotaion risk depending on the opposition. I think Wirtz will come good and Saka can be Salah in gameweek 4. Which options dont you like?

You'll want to WC that WC team in a couple of weeks.

WC and getting Guiu is bananas. Ballard had same shots and shots OT as Strand Larsen. Why isn't he in your team?

Sunderland defender at 4.5 mill seems like chasing points. Guiu can stay in the bench as im setting a settled 3-5-2. Wouldnt want to leave many points on the bench and have rotation headaches

not a huge fan of wirtz, eze for time being as he will take time to settle at spurs if he goes, james and verbruggen.

i guess that could be sels, romero/lacroix (5mil defender of choice), gakpo and cunha or something. the rest of the team is nice, not entirely sure saka is great value for money. but if you like your picks then stick with your gut

Ok thanks. Sticking with 4.5 mill goalkeeper at the moment. Combination was Cucu and Calafiori but the latter might be a rotation risk with Skelly lurking. Verbruggen im getting rid thanks.

I threw Verbruggen in last minute on BB. Can't wait to get rid terrible keeper in team that can't keep CS. How is he your best keeper pick on WC???

Really don't like WC with the transfer window still open. Quite a few deals currently being discussed and I always prefer waiting until the window is closed and teams are more settled.
Eze will likely be a Spurs player by the end of the week, Saka doesn't have pens anymore, and I want to see more of Wirtz.

Enzo or Rice? Who's the better option on WC?

Lol I knew the earlier GK question meant WC. Why? Both trash picks

        You got me mate!

Rice could flourish with Zubimendi/Norgaard playing in DM and with set pieces. He also loves to shoot a lot. DC potential as well. Not an option at 6.5m?

    This was my GW1 squad

    Kelleher(Dubravka)

De Cuyper Diouf VDV (Konsa, Gudmunsson)

    Salah Palmer Kudus Ndiaye Reijnders

    Haaland Pedro (Guiu)

Am I mad contemplating a wildcard to facilitate these moves?

    Out In Cost
    Kelleher 》Trafford
    De Cuyper 》Saliba
    Van de Ven 》Calafiori
    Diouf 》Reinildo
    Palmer 》Semenyo
    Ndiaye 》Talbi
    João Pedro 》Ekitiké

How did Chelsea look on the weekend? Worth switching Pedro to Wood before the price rise? Or Palmer to Saka?
Or wiser to keep both for the west ham fixture?

I think the danger with Pedro is the presence of Delap, so it's not just form, it could be reduced minutes and benching.

I agree. He's a couple of poor games away from a benching and defo always going to get early(ish) subs.
Just not sure if it's the right time to move him on or not.

They were very flat. Have Pedro and Palmer myself. Will wait and see for this week. Pedro is a rotation risk it seems.

I’m moving Pedro on. Mistakes happen and I shouldn’t have got him in.
      Evanilson will come in

    Malen replacement:

    A) Anderson (cry)
    B) KDH (BHA)
    C) O'Riley (eve)

Andersen is the best long term pick.
O’Riley might be off to Juventus there are rumours and Everton looked absolutely dire although I would much prefer one more gameweek to assess

I wouldn't be playing KDH much, maybe BHA WHU CRY TOT sun. Everton fixtures fit best with my rotation options.

But Forest equivalent fixtures aren't too bad either: cry SUN new bou MUN. So, yeah think I might do the obvious and get Anderson.

Have made a decent start with 72 pts playing a 442 (4.0 King and Estebe as bench).

I never like making early transfer but have Collins and Brentford looked terrible, would you transfer out for someone? Maybe Truffert?

    Alisson
    Munoz - Gabriel - Richards
    Salah - Palmer - Semenyo - Gordon
    Ekitike - Mateta - Raul

Defence is a bit of an issue nexg week I guess for most people it is.
Which Keeper and defender combo would you start?
    1) Sels
    2) Dubravka
    A) Andersen
    B) Williams
My other starting defenders are porro and Dorgu and I’m ok to start them regardless.
I’m leaning towards 2B atm as it covers Burnley and forest incase either keeps a CS.

Currently putting the (C) on Semenyo because he served me so well and I'm nervous about Spurs' back 5.

I don't want Saka or Gyökeres in with Liverpool away in GW3. Not wasting a FH, either.

    Anyone care to join?
