Many Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers are activating a Wildcard over the international break, ahead of the Gameweek 4 deadline.

In fact, over 44% of responders in our on-site poll are planning to play the chip ahead of the upcoming Gameweek:

In this article, we outline the pros and cons of a Gameweek 4 Wildcard and put together a few team drafts.

Don’t forget that you can get your Wildcard team rated via our Rate My Team tool or Plan FPL!

GAMEWEEK 4 WILDCARD: THE PROS

FPL notes: Watkins’ woes, Palace impress + Sarr injury

  • If you haven’t got off to a good start, a Gameweek 4 Wildcard can help rejuvenate your squad. This could be beneficial if you own players like William Saliba (£6.0m), Cole Palmer (£10.4m), Bukayo Saka (£9.9m), Matheus Cunha (£8.1m), Ismaila Sarr (£6.5m) and Jorgen Strand Larsen (£6.5m), who are currently flagged, or underperforming assets such as Florian Wirtz (£8.4m) and Ollie Watkins (£8.9m). A Wildcard offers a chance to resolve these issues in a free-hit manner.
  • The transfer window has closed, so some questions now have an answer. Newcastle United have signed forwards Nick Woltemade (£7.0m) and Yoane Wissa (£7.5m) to replace Alexander Isak (£10.4m), who has moved to Liverpool in a British-record deal worth £125m. Elsewhere, the transfer of Harvey Elliott (£5.4m) to Aston Villa suggests regular starts at a budget price. It’s also about the transfers that didn’t happen – knowing that no more will occur suddenly adds security to the situation.
  • This international break will likely see plenty of price rises and falls, so team value can be increased by ditching the droppers and jumping on bandwagons. Players such as Marcos Senesi (£4.5m), Marc Guehi (£4.5m) and Riccardo Calafiori (£5.6m) are all forecast to rise tonight. You can monitor these changes using Live FPL’s price predictions tool.
  • A typical international break is silly season when it comes to FPL flags. While many of these injury ‘doubts’ will be fine to feature in Gameweek 4, there will surely be some exceptions. Deploying the Wildcard now let’s FPL managers effortlessly remove those who are injured during the international break.
  • Given that they are ranked fourth on our Season Ticker in Gameweeks 4-10 (see below), it could be beneficial to triple-up on Liverpool. Crystal Palace have some favourable matches coming up, too, and you might want to proactively prepare for the fixture swings of Manchester City and Arsenal in Gameweeks 6 and 7, respectively.

GAMEWEEK 4 WILDCARD: THE CONS

FPL notes: Isak + Trippier injury updates,

Do we think Potter will stick with 4-2-3-1 (4-5-1 when defending)?

    I'll check price changes later...

    But with £0.4m itb

Any harm in going early on Sarr to Grealish before any price changes?

    This keeps 0.2m itb.

Alternatives are Estêvão, Enzo, Ndi, KDH, Brooks or Anthony at Burnley.

Or possibly Lucas Tolentino Coelho de Lima (Paquetá)?

I honestly did this (Cunha to Grealish) last Sunday. I wanted to avoid the Cunha price fall and gain the double Grealish rises. 0.3m swing with 0.2m I can get just by selling later. That is a lot for 1 ft and getting better fpl player too

    Best 3 forwards on WC:

Haaland & Pedro set and forget
    3rd choice:

    A) Larsen
    B) Mateta
    C) Evanilson
    D) Gykoroes (will sacrifice else where but his fixtures aren’t great for foreseeable).

Will have Munoz as Palace cover and Semenyo as Bournemouth cover.

I’m moving towards Haaland JP and Isak but makes it very difficult to have a Palmer/Saka in midfield

Of those I would go Mateta

So instead we should silently sit by and watch them ruin the website with a countdown that doesn't even work?
Judging by your flairs you're new here, have a butchers at mine, I've been here nearly a decade (if not longer, pretty sure I lurked for a season before creating an account)
I'm an ex-paying member of the site and supported it loads in it's formative years
It's not much to ask to not have pop-ups every time I open the site or shift tab a new window (oh look, ANOTHER pop-up). It screams desperation, are the ads not enough revenue? It's not like the site has changed much in the last 10 years, sure maybe a little bit more API sourcing/data collection, otherwise they've collaborated a lot and the content is the same

Just curious if (and I don't mean this in a negative light) you'd be considering Cucurella as much if the Eze (freekick debacle - CRY) goal was allowed, Fullkrug (barely an inch of a toe offside - WHU) goal was allowed, and Josh King (outrageously awful VAR intervention) goal was allowed? He'd have effectively lost 9 points from those three plus potentially bonuses? I'm considering losing him. He's been very fortunate IMO so far and whilst he has huge upside potential I'm not convinced.

VVD, someone else said he has fixtures, does he? OK Burnley (albeit away), followed by Merseyside Derby (anything can happen), their bogey team Palace (who are in good form) and then away to Chelsea followed by Man U who always seem to turn up for their rivalry games (see Arsenal game start of season)

Chelsea have been fortunate defensively BUT they are good, or were end of last season, so I can go with them for a bit longer. Pool are pool. Defensively not that good but they will have so much possession they will do ok.

    Petrovic
    Chabolah Porro Guehi
    Enzo Grealish Mbeumo Salah Reijinders
    Pedro Haaland (c)
    Dubravka Diouf Esteve Barnes

What’s your chip strategy? If your BB soon after wc, then beef up that squad.
Also, prefer Munoz over Porro and another 4.5m def - Andersen / Senesi

Were the DEFCON charts of players from last season incorrect? Elliot Anderson according to those charts had DEFCON in all of their last 10 games last season but hasn’t had any yet this one

Forest defenders similar, although it was possible they’d get less due to playing mostly defensive sides in the first 3 weeks

Any help as to what to do here? WC, perhaps, or overkill?

    1 FT, £3.9 itb.

    Sels / Dúbravka
Gabriel, Porro, De Cuyper / Estève, Rodon
    Salah, Wirtz, Rogers, Kudus, Reijnders
    Gyökeres, Pedro / Guiu

Your team is good tbh, you have Arsenal players

Think I may need to wildcard.

    -Sarr's likely injured
-Wirtz could have reduced minutes with Szoboszlai playing amazing and our RBs back to fitness. Isak could affect him too.
-Starting with Salah then changing him to Isak and another Liverpool midfielder once the starting XI is set long-term works well
-Ait Nouri is overpriced to own with potential rotation and short-term tough games
-Neco Williams minutes are a doubt with Forest signing more fullbacks
-Fernandes does not convince me after their performances lately. Only thing he has going is DEFCON but the pens will run out. 3/5 next fixtures are tough!
    -Price changes
-Kudus not involved enough in Tottenham's attack. Still a good hold but maybe Solanke is the one to have when he's back
-Bournemouth continuing their great attacking football from last year. Triple Bournemouth with those fixtures seem great value
-Haaland the best captain the next 3/5 weeks. Way more involved than Salah who is adjusting to his new teammates.
-Rather just own Rogers from Villa than spending 9M on Watkins in case they turn it around

Here's what I came up with for now:

    Vicario | Dubravka
Van de Ven | Richards | Andersen | Senesi | Rodon
    Salah | Semenyo | Rogers | Anderson | Dewsbury-Hall
    Haaland | J. Pedro | Evanilson

      Very good team..
Personally I’d get Rogers out. Downgrade.
I’d upgrade Andersen / Richards to a 5.5m def (munoz)

Love the suggestions tbh! Lacroix and Munoz provide immense value.

If Sarr is out they'll definitely try to get Mateta chances through their fullbacks more.

Andersen is going to rotate with Dewsbury-Hall. He is incredibly unlucky not to have more DEFCON points. He's hit 11 three games in a row! If Luiz somehow takes his place at least he's my 5th mid.

No Bruno Fernandes in any of the 3 drafts?
I thought that in an imaginary universe he’s the top scorer after he gets and scores from a penalty against Arsenal and the manages to actually stay cool and kick the ball into the net against Fulham.

I am happy with my WC team but the only player I am undecided upon is Gakpo.

I have the exact money to switch him over to Mbeumo, would you say that is a good move here?

    Raya | Dubravka
    Curu | Munoz | Porro | Rodon | Esteve
Semenyo | Enzo | Grealish | King | Gakpo or Mbeumo
    Haaland | Isak | Pedro

This one is tough. Salah likely to be everyone's captain this week but Haaland has shown better form.

I'd WC this if Sarr is out as Wirtz/Williams may have reduced minutes. Also Fernandes and Watkins a bit expensive for what they're providing.

Is Strand Larsen being overlooked on WC?

Yup. That's one of the main benefits of playing your Wildcard.

You just need to take care in not transferring out anyone in your team that has already risen in price - and who won't again in the wildcard period - if you want to keep them. And every night you need to check who's rising / who's falling!

Yes, you could target price risers early in the window and finalise your team before deadline. There may not be many, if any double risers however...but you could aim for the imminent risers and hold them to day of deadline in the hope they rise again.

Also if you have any players you want to keep but their price is falling, you can sell them and buy back cheaper

Posting this again for 2nd and 3rd opinions, having had just the one reply earlier....
I have made two free transfers this week but I am now leaning towards playing my free hit....if I activate the free hit, will these two transfers that were already made form part of my free hit (I.e. will these two players revert to last week's players after the free hit). Or are they viewed as my team prior to free hit? Wondering if activating the free hit will undo those transfers as permanent ones. A little bit of regret on making the transfers so an ideal scenario would be they revert to last week's players.
    Thanks.

They count as part of your FH. You’ll get your FTs back too

Thank you for confirming this. Free Hit might be a great option to retract my rage transfers so. :o)

The transfers will be cancelled and you will get the original players back, at whatever their value is at deadline.

Sarr might need to go, worth a hit for either?

    A Sarr to Elliott

    B Diouf to Guehi

    Sels,
    Cucu, Porro, Gudmund, Senesi
    Salah, Semenyo, Kudus, Reijnders,
    Pedro, Haaland

    Dubs, Diouf, Guiu,# I Sarr

    .5

Diouf may not be the worst def to have now, new formation and abit of confidence to go with prehaps

Elliot and Xavi in the above drafts seems abit risky, do we think Elliot will be nailed?
I need a sub 7.0 mid with good gw5-6-7 fixtures...

Right now that Isak has signed, how will this affect Ekitike?

I’m expecting he’ll be like Jota and Diaz, those kind of minutes.

His minutes look risky from GW5 onwards. I'm making a plan to sell him in GW5.

      Solid team.
Lack of bench suggests you not playing BB soon or played it?

Got bored of my team… seeing too many forest and Villa forwards. So I pressed the WC today. Will make a strong squad to see me through to winter
