Out with the defence-first old, in with the all-out-attack new?

That’s the simplistic (and not inaccurate) reading of the managerial change at Nottingham Forest following Monday’s dismissal of Nuno Espirito Santo.

In his place comes Ange Postecoglou, back in the Premier League after his two-year stint at Tottenham Hotspur ended in June.

In this piece, we ask what the first managerial casualty and hire of the season means for Fantasy managers.

We’ll not rehash the potted history that we included in our Scout Report two years ago; Postecoglou is not the relatively unknown quantity of before.

Instead, we’ll focus more on his time at Spurs.

ANGE: THE SPURS YEARS – AN OVERVIEW

2023/242024/25
Goals scored74 (7th)64 (7th=)
Goals conceded61 (7th=)65 (16th)
Clean sheets7 (12=)6 (16th)
xG68.95 (6th)59.70 (9th)
xG conceded64.55 (14th)64.36 (17th)

In summary: goals and lots of them!

Spurs both scored and conceded 60+ goals in each of Postecoglou’s two seasons at the helm.

The expected goals at either end (xG/xGC) are in the 60-70 ballpark, too. In the top half for xG in each year, the Lilywhites were in the lower reaches of the table for xGC.

Clean sheets-wise, Spurs didn’t get more than seven in either campaign.

NUNO: THE FOREST YEARS – AN OVERVIEW

2023/24*2024/25
Goals scored32 (12th=)58 (9th=)
Goals conceded37 (9th=)46 (6th=)
Clean sheets1 (18th=)13 (2nd=)
xG31.52 (9th)46.57 (15th)
xG conceded27.75 (4th)49.56 (9th)

*from Gameweek 18 onwards, the point of Nuno’s appointment

Nuno’s Forest were almost a mirror image.

The clean sheets didn’t materialise in his first half-season in charge but the underlying data was there: they ranked fourth for xGC from Gameweek 18 (Nuno’s first game as head coach) of 2023/24.

The Tricky Trees followed that up by finishing joint-second for clean sheets in 2024/25.

As for goalscoring, 58 was a decent tally last season. But Forest massively overachieved (+11.43) on the xG front, relying on ruthlessness – especially from Chris Wood (£7.7m) – rather than a high volume of chances created.

THE XG RACE: NUNO’S FOREST V ANGE’S SPURS

Who would you bench from this front 8?

    Salah Gakpo Semenyo Grealish Reijnders
    Wissa Pedro Mateta

(On WC, alternative is just get Elliott instead of Reijnders & bench)

      Reijnders if I have to..

I would consider King as 8th attacker if on WC and permabench.

Disagree. Get a stronger pick and be able to rotate & cover injuries (and accept the inevitable benched points!) then build transfers.

I watched the game last night, he didn't get up and down much, Colombia countered up the middle with Luis Diaz often the out ball, trying to get the ball quickly into the forwards / 10s. Venezuela needed to win and left spaces as they tried to chase goals, hence the scoreline. It was hot and humid despite the evening kick-off, but I wouldn't have too many concerns about Munoz, who didn't play in the first game of the IB. Lerma took a slight knock before being subbed off yesterday but nothing else to report on the PL players otherwise

it’s still early in the season but this is my early thinking:

    - Haaland looks a season keeper, will be top scorer by a long way and dominate MCI points
    - Isak will become the best LIV attacker to own, but the best time to come on will be around GW8
    - The ‘template’ frontline might become Haaland, Isak, Pedro which would only change if Palmer becomes essential again
    - The next big fixture swing is GW7/8, so save FTs or your WC for then if you can
    - Holding some positions back for ‘Defcon Stalwarts’ (Senesi, Lacroix, VVD, Anderson etc) could free up FTs for the higher upside positions

    1. Feanor

Palmer has 1 goal and 3 assists in his last 17 PL games

Didnt we see this with Haaland last year at the start and then Wood and Watkins and Wissa were better than him? Long long way to go in the season. Haaland won't be the top fpl scorer, top goalscorer probably but it'll be a midfielder again is my guess.

      1. Feanor
        • 17 Years
        10 months, 5 days ago

        Haaland was better per match

Haaland: 181 points in 31 starts

Wood: 200 points in 35 starts

Wissa: 185 points in 34 starts

          Quite tough

Andersen - good 4th def with defcon
King - first choice for now but tends to be subbed off early (fine as 4.5m pick)

Rodon - probably one of the better 4.0 defs but not sure on 2x4.0m def setup

          KDH - nice safe pick

Elliott - ideally like more info and see him start games before considering him

Amazing article. It has incredible levels of detail, answering questions I didn't even know I had. From 'positive outcome ratio' graphs to analysing Chris Wood's pressures per 90. Jesus Neale, I hope you win awards for your work on this site.

    1 FT, 3.8 itb

    Kelleher Valdimarsson
    Munoz Cucurella Murillo Senesi Esteve
    Salah BrunoF Semenyo Anderson P.M.Sarr
    Mateta Watkins Guiu

Guiu to JP the obvious move here?

Upgrading Sarr or rolling is fine as well

Yeah, reckon the first option for Sarr is Ndiaye but JP probably edges him

    A) Bruno to Salah and c

    B) Guiu to Pedro/Gyokeres/Etikite/Isak or other forward

    C) Watkins to other fwd
